1st century A.D. colossal statue of Greek God Apollo unearthed in Turkey

Washington, September 9 (ANI): Italian archaeologists have unearthed a 1st century A.D. colossal statue of Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, light, music and poetry, from white calcified cliffs in southwestern Turkey.

Colossal statues were very popular in antiquity, as evidenced by the lost giant statues of the Colossus of Rhodes and the Colossus of Nero.

Most of them vanished long ago, with their material re-used in other building projects.

“This colossal statue of Apollo is really a unique finding. Such statues are extremely rare in Asia Minor. Only a dozen still survive,” team leader Francesco D’Andria, director of the Institute of Archaeological Heritage, Monuments and Sites at Italy’s National Research Council in Lecce, told Discovery News.

Split in two huge marble fragments, divided along the bust and the lower part of the sculpture, the 1st century A.D. statue was unearthed at the World Heritage Site of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale.

Founded around 190 B.C. by Eumenes II, King of Pergamum (197 B.C.-159 B.C.), Hierapolis was given over to Rome in 133 B.C.

The Hellenistic city grew into a flourishing Roman city, with temples, a theatre and popular sacred hot springs, believed to have healing properties.

Standing at more than four meters (13 feet) in height, the newly discovered statue, which is missing the head and the arms, might have been one of the most impressive sights in the city.

“It depicts the Greek god Apollo sitting on a throne and holding the cithara with his left arms. The god wears a wonderfully draped tunic. The cloth has a transparency effect to reveal mighty muscles,” said D’Andria.

Inspired by the great classical masterpieces, the artist did not pay the same peculiar attention to the back of the statue.

“This shows that the sculpture was placed against a wall and was supposed to be seen only frontally,” D’Andria noted.

Standing in all its massive regality, the statue was particularly important for the city, since Apollo was venerated as Hierapolis’ divine founder.

The colossal statue was probably the main sculpture at the sanctuary of Apollo, which was intentionally built over an active fault.

“Hierapolis is a unique site, and archaeologists are bringing to light incredible findings each year. As with all the other ancient buildings, the statue will be virtually reconstructed in full detail,” Francesco Gabellone, an architect at the National Research Council in Lecce, told Discovery News. Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): Fans of British actor Colin Firth will soon see him on the royal throne as the star plays King George VI in his upcoming movie.

The 48-year-old actor will play Queen Elizabeth II’s father in The King’s Speech, reports Contactmusic.

The film depicts the efforts of the royal house to correct a stammer in his speech when he was to ascend the throne following his brother Edward VIII’s abdication in 1936.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Geoffrey Rush has been roped in to play the king’s speech therapist Lionel Logue. (ANI)

Madonna set to make film on Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson

London, Sep 1 (ANI): Queen of Pop Madonna is set to start her new movie project on Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor.

Madge, 51, hopes that Scottish actor David Tennant, 38, and Aussie actress Cate Blanchett, 40, will star in the movie about Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American socialite, to marry whom King Edward VIII gave up the throne.

The movie will be another musical like the 1996 flick ‘Evita’, in which Madge played Eva Peron, but this time she will be directing and producing, not acting in it.

She has already met with ‘Dr Who’ star Tennant to persuade him to play Edward, and she is determined to get Blanchett to play the young Wallis after deciding against Keira Knightley.

“The final script is now written and the locations have been scouted. Madonna is now trying to assemble the cast and put the finances in place,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“The first scene of the film is an old woman in her nineties living on her own in a Parisian flat. She starts to tell her life story to her housekeeper. It turns out the old woman is Wallis Simpson.

“There will be a song for each decade of her life,” the source added. (ANI)

Prince William’s secret vacation with old chum Lady Natasha

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Prince William has had a secret summer vacation in Cornwall without his girlfriend Kate Middleton, it has emerged.

And while Middleton was absent from the seen, Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs – an old chum of the second in line to the throne – was often to be seen by his side, reports the Telegraph.

When asked, Lady Natasha said: “I don’t want to talk about the holiday. It was a private occasion.”

Prince Harry was also among the guests enjoying the five-day break at a house rented by Lady Natasha’s father in Trebetherick.

Lady Natasha’s brother, Viscount Julian Erleigh, 23, is one of Harry’s best pals.

One regular at the local Oystercatcher bar where the princes and their friends caroused on a number of nights during their holiday in the first week of July said: “It says a lot for the discretion of people who live here that it has remained a secret for this long.

“Sometimes there were about 20 of them in here. All of the princes’ female friends are very pretty, but I recall Natasha well. She stood out.”

Lady Natasha met William when she attended Westonbirt School, a mere five minutes from Highgrove, and was close enough to him by the time he celebrated his 21st birthday party to be seated at the top table. (ANI)

India’s Parsis celebrate ‘Navroz’

Mumbai, Aug 19 (ANI): India’s Zoroastrian Parsi community celebrated the New Year day, ‘Navroz’, with usual fervour here on Wednesday.

Members of the miniscule Parsi community flocked at the Fire Temple to pay respects to their prophet Zarathushtra.

The Parsi New Year is marked by joyous fervour and gaiety.

On this day, Parsis decorate their homes with “torans” or floral garlands and chalk designs. An important part of the celebrations is also the get-togethers with friends and family.

Ten days prior to their New Year, the Parsis have prayers for the dead as they believe the spirits of the dead are present at this time and if remembered, shower their blessings. These prayers are conducted at all fire temples in the city.

“On those ten days, we generally have prayers in our fire temple, which we normally attend. We offer them flowers. We, Parsi, believe in those days, the departed souls come down. We want their blessings at that time. So, we have our prayers and all that,” said Shenaz, a Parsi woman.

The day before ‘Navroz’ is ‘Pateti’ when Parsis dwell on the wrongs or the sins committed by them the previous year. Navroz is also the first day of the first month of the Zoroastrian year.

“It’s the same belief to have when you go and pray in a church. It’s basically you go to pray our prophet, to god to ask him to protect you, protect your family and everything runs smoothly for the year ahead,” said Jahadastoor, a Parsi youth.

Zoroastrianism, the religion of the Parsi community, is one of the oldest revealed religions in the world and the basic tenet is the law of purity and righteousness.

Zoroastrians worship all the natural elements but the most important is fire.

It is estimated that there are 150,000 Parsis in the world, and about 50,000 of them are settled in Mumbai.

According to legend 3000 years ago, Shah Jamshed of the Peshadian dynasty ascended the throne on “Navroz’- ‘nav’ meaning new and ‘roz’ meaning day.

This particular day also came to be known as Jamshed Navroz and is celebrated even in modern times with lot of feasting. (ANI)

Prince William follows tradition, becomes an honorary barrister

London, July 7 (ANI): Heir to the British throne, Prince William, has been made an honorary barrister at one of the ancient Inns of Court but promised not to practice.

Prince William visiting the Queens room in Middle Temple, on the occasion of his Call to the Bench.

The ceremony on Monday at London’s Middle Temple saw the Prince not only being called to the Bar, but also being called to the Bench, the Inn’s governing body, The Telegraph reports.

William received good wishes from his “proud grandmother”, the Queen, who could not make the event as it clashed with another engagement.

The Queen regretted not being able to attend the ceremony but Sir George Newman, the Middle Temple treasurer, read her words of support.

The Prince made his acceptance speech in the Inn’s Elizabethan hall before almost 300 guests sat down to dinner and, in accordance with tradition, described his interest, hobbies and passions.

William told the law lords, senior barristers and law students associated with Middle Temple: “I play football, rugby and water polo, not very well, but particularly pride myself in being a quite magnificent armchair centre-back at football and flanker at rugby… and now you have made me a barrister – I promise not to practice, except for the odd speeding ticket.”

The Prince is the sixth member of the Royal Family to be called to the Bench as a Royal Bencher and is following in the footsteps of the Queen Mother, called in 1944, and his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, called in 1988.

William, who wore a gown for the ceremony, told the guests about his activities during the past decade, describing how he spent a gap year in Chile and Africa, had the privilege of serving in the Household Cavalry and was now in the RAF training to be an operational search and rescue pilot.

Talking about his charitable interests, the 27-year-old royal said he wanted to do what he could to help society’s “disadvantaged”, adding: “I’m also very interested in initiatives in creating sustainable development in the light of climate change.”

The Queen said in her message to her grandson: “I regret that I am unable to be with you this evening for your call to the Bench which follows in the tradition of Royal Benchers established at Middle Temple for my great-grandfather, the Prince of Wales, in 1861.”

In a reference to the Queen Mother, who referred to herself as the “woman of the domus” – or house – after become a Bencher, the Queen added: “I should not wish this message to be an unwelcome intrusion into this evening’s proceedings.

“However, as the daughter of the ‘first daughter of the domus’ and the proud grandmother of your latest Royal Bencher, I would simply ask that my warmest of wishes be extended to all present for a most successful and memorable occasion.” (ANI)

‘Natural pilot’ Harry wins top cadet trophy

London, Nay 6 (ANI): Prince Harry has been honoured with a top award at the end of the first phase of his helicopter training for his natural flying skills, say reports.

The third-in-line to the throne, who is training to pilot the meanest attack machine in the British Army, the Apache, was previously reported to have flunked a theory exam earlier this year. He was given the opportunity to take the exam again.

Harry, upon clearing the exam, was claimed to be a step closer to his dream of returning to Afghanistan, from where he was pulled off last year following safety concerns after news of his presence there was leaked.

Now, the 24-year-old seems to have proved his metal by bagging the sought-after Horsa Trophy after being voted as “the man you would most want on your squadron” by instructors and fellow trainee pilots.

“It shows he is not only popular, but has natural pilot skills,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Harry has reportedly joined his elder brother William at the Royal Air Force’s base in Shropshire to begin the next phase of his helicopter training. (ANI)

Prince Harry ‘celebrates helicopter pilot’s licence with boozy night’

London, May 4 (ANI): Prince Harry reportedly passed his helicopter pilot’s licence and celebrated his success with a boozy night out in a club.

The third in line to the British throne, who is training to pilot the meanest attack machine in the British Army, the Apache, had allegedly flunked a theory exam earlier this year and was given the opportunity to take it again.

Harry, 24, upon clearing the exam, was claimed to be a step closer to his dream of returning to Afghanistan from where he was pulled off last year following safety concerns after news of his presence there was leaked.

“Harry can now fly military helicopters and is a step closer to passing his Wings,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“It also means he is more likely to return to the front line. As a foot soldier, he is regarded as a magnet for bombs but as an airborne one, he is harder to trace.

“Harry and William celebrated at the Troubadour. They watched a friend’s band until 2am,” the source added. (ANI)

‘Princess Eugenie rescued from rock pelting bandits by bodyguards’

London, May 4 (ANI): British Princess Eugenie was rescued by her two bodyguards who fought against a group of bandits trying to thug her pal’s purse in Cambodia, according to reports.

Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter, who has been spending her gap year travelling the world with friends, had allegedly been walking at night in Phnom Penh when one thief tried to snatch away her friend’s purse.

The royal protection officers were said to have rugby-tackled a bandit as he tried to escape with the purse and while doing so were reportedly being hit with rocks by another robber.

The brave guards were then claimed to have whisked the 19-year-old to safety, according to a Buckingham Palace source, who showered praises on the SO14 Special Branch officers.

“They feared the incident was escalating out of control and took the decision to focus on the safety of their principal,” the Sun quoted the source as saying.

Eugenie, daughter of Prince Andrew and Fergie and sixth in line to the throne, has been to India, South America, Australia, South Africa and Thailand during her ongoing gap year. (ANI)

Official Washington prefer more-breezy, fly-in, fly-out casual partying events

Washington, Apr.30 (ANI): Socialising and partying in official Washington has undergone a change in the last decade and a half.

Washington doesn’t demand or even want a sit-down dinner with an evening port.

According to Politico, partygoers tend to prefer more-breezy, fly-in, fly-out casual events, like birthday parties for A-list reporters and staffers.

Faced with the most terrifying economic crisis since the Great Depression, two wars, the looming collapse of the auto industry, a swine flu epidemic and even a few pirate attacks, the city’s new establishment hasn’t had the time – or perhaps the inclination – to elect a new power hostess.

“The first 100 days, the economy wasn’t solved and the new hostess hasn’t been identified,” says journalist Margaret Carlson, who has a knack for bringing people together.

Its essentially par for the course that every incoming administration reshuffles the Washington deck – effectively determining who’s powerful and who’s not. But as any decent lobbyist will tell you, access is the key to power, and few control the access to the city’s political hierarchy more directly than the reigning social chair.

The doyennes of yesteryear — Democratic powerhouse Esther Coopersmith, the well-known Sally Quinn, and Beth Dozoretz, a friend of the Clintons, remain social fixtures. These women still host fabulous parties.

Several years ago, two new party players – Juleanna Glover and Nancy Jacobson Penn – popped up on the horizon, offering food, drink and expansive homes for White House officials, members of Congress, senators, Capitol Hill staff, lobbyists, reporters and even then-Vice President Dick Cheney.

Glover, a Republican, was more than willing to throw a party for anyone from the newly minted head of CNN’s Washington bureau to visiting A-listers such as businessman John Tisch.

Jacobson Penn, conveniently a Democrat, used her impressive Rolodex to transform her palatial Georgetown home into a sort of social foxhole for Democrats in a town that was run by Republicans.

Between them, Glover and Jacobson Penn had the social cartography of political Washington covered.

Still, the grandeur of a Katharine Graham soiree is missing – the utter sophistication and French chefs replaced by appetizers from Costco.

So who’s in line for the new throne?

Communications guru, avid party-thrower and overall Washington political scene expert Jim Courtovich says that “the list is still emerging.” (ANI)

Tipu Sultan’s throne finial auctioned for 3,89,600 pounds

A gem-encrusted gold finial from the octagonal golden throne of Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, has been auctioned for 3,89,600 pounds,
auctioneers Bonhams has said.

A spokeswoman for Bonhams said that the eighteenth century item was bought by an unidentified private collector on Thursday. There were only two bidders for what was billed as one of the most important Tipu items ever to appear for sale.

The finial lay in an English castle for at least 100 years and then in a bank vault, unknown to Tipu enthusiasts and scholars. It was discovered by Bonhams’ Islamic Department on a routine valuation.

The gem-set object is one of three surviving tiger head finials that adorned Tipu’s elaborate throne. It lay at the Featherstone Castle, Northumberland, where it was listed in an 1843 inventory of the late Baron Wallace of Knarsdale (1768-1844), who oversaw the East India Company, and afterwards was hidden away in a bank.

Although some of the most important items were reserved for the British royal family, the famous golden throne was broken up so that the elements could be shared, much to the disapproval of the Governor-General, Lord Wellesley.

Prince Harry parties with ex girlfriend’s ‘rival’

London, April 5, (ANI): Prince Harry was spotted clubbing with Natalie Pinkham who once left his former girlfriend Chelsy Davy raging after she had a secret smooch with the then committed royal three years ago.

Harry, who split with his ex Davy in January, was recently seen on a night out with the Dancing on Ice star until 3.30am before heading to a friend’s pad in Mayfair with a group.

The 24-year-old was said to have taken care not to be snapped with the 30-year-old by leaving the apartment separately an hour later.

According to a right Royal carry-on, the third in line to the throne had arrived to pick up the beauty from a London address with two Scotland Yard bodyguards.

But a group of snappers allegedly led Natalie to opt for a cab instead.

“There were a lot of phone calls and the pair of them were laughing. They are clearly great mates and saw the funny side,” News of the World quoted an onlooker as saying.

Harry reportedly faced Chelsy’s dump over his playboy antics and was said to have been at the centre of her fury when he was snapped grabbing Natalie’s breasts in a bar in 2006. (ANI)

Najib becomes Malaysia’s sixth Prime Minister

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 3 (ANI): Najib Tun Razak has been sworn in as Malaysia’s sixth Prime Minister, taking over the reigns from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who stepped down after leading the country for over five years.

Najib (55) took his oath of office on Friday. Dressed in a black baju Melayu complete with sampin, Najib arrived at the palace, accompanied by his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

A total of 319 guests, including former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, attended the historic event, the Star reported.

The ceremony, steeped in tradition, began when Tuanku Mizan and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Zahirah entered the throne room and the Malaysian Armed Forces band played the national anthem.

After taking his oaths of office, loyalty and confidentiality, Najib signed the four instruments of appointment, followed by the reading of the doa selamat.

The instruments of appointment were then signed by Court of Appeal President Alauddin Mohd Sheriff as witness and handed over to Chief Secretary to the Government, Mohd Sidek Hassan.

At the same ceremony, Abdullah was conferred the nation’s highest award, the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN), while Jeanne received the Seri Setia Mahkota (SSM) by Tuanku Mizan. Both awards carry the title Tun.

Najib was born in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, on July 23, 1953, and is the eldest son of the late Abdul Razak Hussein, Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, and Rahah Mohd Noah.

His appointment is most significant in the country’s history as this is for the first time that a Prime Minister’s son is holding the post. (ANI)

Equal right to royal women in Britain on anvil

London, Mar.27 (ANI): Britain could soon witness a historic change in the rules of succession to the throne, including giving royal women an equal right to access the throne.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown held an important meeting with Buckingham Palace in this regard.

According to the BBC, Brown also put forth a resolution to do away with the ban on heirs to the throne marrying Roman Catholics.

Brown during his visit to Brazil earlier had already hinted towards a need for such reforms.

“There are clearly issues about the exclusion of people from the rights of succession and there are clearly issues that have got to be dealt with. But I think in the 21st Century people do expect discrimination to be removed and they do expect us to be looking at all these issues,” Brown had said.

Sources privy to the Downing Street confirmed the prime minister would raise the prospect of the major reforms at a Commonwealth summit in November this year.

If such Act to give equal right to the royal daughters comes into fore, then Princess Anne would be fourth in line to the throne, behind Prince Harry. Currently she is behind the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex, and their children. (ANI)

Prince William’s ‘Harry Potter’ scar from childhood golfing accident

London, March 19 (ANI): Prince William has revealed that he has a scar on his forehead similar to that of Harry Potter, which he got from a childhood golf accident.

The second in line to the throne made the revelation to a 10-year-old cancer patient Alice Marples in a television interview to promote his support for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s plans to build a new centre for young patients at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton, Surrey.

The 26-year-old told how he got the fictional boy wizard like scar, which reportedly made nine-year-old Prince undergo surgery and bear 24 stitches in 1991.

“That was for my Harry Potter scar, as I call it, just here,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying in an interview with the BBC’s Newsround.

“I call it that because it glows sometimes and some people notice it – other times they don’t notice it at all.

“But I got hit by a golf club when I was playing golf with a friend of mine. Yeah, we were on a putting green and the next thing you know there was a seven-iron and it came out of nowhere and it hit me in the head.

“So, yeah, I was in hospital for that, but that was, yeah, very minor compared to how many times you’ve been into hospital,” he added. (ANI)

Peaches Geldof was ‘stroked’ by Michael Jackson

Washington, Mar 12 (ANI): Bob Geldof’s daughter Peaches has revealed that she was “stroked” by pop star Michael Jackson when she was just eight years old.

In an interview on U.K. series Celebrity Juice, the 19-year-old socialite shocked TV audiences after recalling the childhood incident, while she was visiting Disneyland with family.

“I was eight years old, I was at Disneyland with Pappy Geldof and the fam (family), we were all hanging out there, and somehow, for some reason, Michael Jackson was there doing some sort of promotional thing and he invited a load of kids who were staying in the Disney hotel, to come meet him,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“He was in this one room, and we went in and I was really excited and he was sitting on a huge throne at the end of the hall, flanked by Mickey and Goofy.

“The image is burned in my mind of him there, just like ‘come closer’, and I went and I sat on his lap and then he proceeded to stroke me and whisper in my ear a little bit.

“I’ve got photos to prove it. I’ve been stroked by Michael Jackson,” she added. (ANI)

Jacko’s personal items catalogued for public viewing

Washington, Mar 10 (ANI): Five separate catalogues of Michael Jackson’s personal items have been published and for the first time will be viewed by the public as they go for auction.

The auction begins on April 21, 2009 in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, reports Fox News.

The collection includes two canvasses, one each by Macaulay Culkin and Michael Jackson, circa 1991 and 1998 respectively. And a carousel horse “gifted” by Elizabeth Taylor.

What could be seen most among the lot, were sculptures of children, especially boys, a life size sculpture of two boys on a bicycle and a bronze sculpture of two boys playing leapfrog were among them.

There were also paintings and drawings of Jackson acting as a Pied Piper, and plenty of vases, furniture, rugs, runners, tables, and more sculptures, and even a gigantic gold throne with red velvet upholstery.

The biggest part of the auction was made up of Jacko’s wardrobe, costumes that had been used in his shows, and his collection of pinball machines and standing video arcade games.

Next on the catalogues were real cars, a 1988 Lincoln Town Car Limousine, 1990 Rolls Royce Silver Spur II Touring Limousine, a 1999 Rolls Royce Silver Seraph Limo with 24 K gold embellishments designed exclusively by and for Jackson, and a 1954 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60. (ANI)

Prince Charles pips Barack Obama to become World’s Best Dressed Man

Melbourne, March 5 (ANI): Prince Charles has been voted the ‘world’s best dressed man’ in a new survey headed by fashion bible Esquire.

The 60-year-old beat comic Ronnie Corbett to second place followed by actor Bill Nighy, while US President Barack Obama grabbed the fourth spot.

The Prince of Wales was hailed for his sense of style depicted from his double breasted suits, by Saville Row tailors Gieves and Hawkes, to his accessories such as a pocket handkerchief, silk tie and John Lobb shoes.

“He is perfectly turned out in a double-breasted suit,” News.com.au quoted the magazine judges as saying.

“Admirably, the Prince keeps his wardrobe in appropriate style: we’re told he has a room laid out like a tailor’s shop,” the judges added.

The British heir to the throne also left behind tennis ace Roger Federer, actor Adrien Brody and Kuwaiti royal Sheikh Majed al-Sabah to grab the honour.

Esquire editor Jeremy Langmead said: “It’s the men who dress like grown-ups who really caught the judge’s eyes this year; as well as those who have developed their own distinctive style and stuck with it.

“I love the fact that we have such a diverse list: from artists to royals, to one of the Two Ronnies.” (ANI)

Prince Harry’s Army helicopter pilot training begins

London, February 18 (ANI): Putting aside his alleged race rows, Prince Harry has set his sights on achieving his Apache dreams as he took control of a light aircraft.

The 24-year-old was said to have commanded a Slingsby Firefly in the company of an instructor as he took to the skies above RAF Barkston Heath in Lincolnshire.

The royal, who is training to pilot the meanest attack machine in the British Army, is expected to “master the 175mph trainer before moving to a Squirrel helicopter”, reports the Sun.

The third in line to the throne, who is allegedly keen on making a comeback on the frontline after having being pulled out from the Afghan War, has to undergo a rigorous 18-month-programme that will test his aptitude to handle the 45 million pound attack helicopter.

The party-loving royal will also have to follow the Army’s strict rules for the learners, which include staying away from the bottle for months at a time.

Harry has previously endured a terrifying helicopter crash simulator as part of his training but reportedly remained undeterred in his ambitions. (ANI)
