Magic can predict future, spread social messages: Indian magician

New Delhi, June 10 – In the age of rapid communication, magic can be a medium to spread social messages, says Indian illusionist Gopinath Muthukad, who won a prestigious international award for predicting 10 headlines of different dailies in different metros in India even before the pages were laid out.

‘The response – was overwhelming. It showed that misconceptions of people about illusion and magic were changing,’ said Muthukad, who will be conferred the magic world’s Oscar, the International Merlin Award, here June 23.

The Kerala-based magician is in Canada for a series of shows.

Muthukad, 47, who founded the first magic academy of Asia at Thiruvananthapuram, told IANS in an e-mail interview that he ‘had to convince people that the science of magic has a role in predictions’.

The prediction of newspaper headlines won the Merlin jury over, he said.

Muthukad, the second Indian to win the award after P.C. Sorcar junior, has also been using his art of magic and illusion to promote important social causes too for the last two decades.

‘Magic is a visual art that penetrates the subconscious mind of people with the language bar. It can be used as a wonderful tool for mass communication. A highly successful mission was the STOP AD, a magical act with which we reached out to youths and adults against smoking, alcohol and drug abuse in Kerala,’ Muthukad said.

Muthukad said he has been ‘using magic for social messages since 1990, when the government of Kerala launched its literacy drive in the state’.

‘We designed new illusion tricks and adopted meaningful presentations of existing ones to communicate. The literacy massages had a deep impact,’ he said. It encouraged Muthukad to take up new campaigns.

‘If we go through the statistics of alcohol abuse in India, especially in Kerala, the graph always grows. It has left our society with a catastrophe of health and family concerns. The Kerala government told us to conduct magical education at the grassroots in all the 14 districts of the state,’ he said.

Muthukad said he has managed to draw attention to several issues like ‘health, communal harmony and fight against terrorism’ through magic.

‘We have also been trying to propagate Gandhian values and themes of national integration worldwide,’ he said.

Muthukad undertook a magical tour in 2002 to spread the message of national integration with roadshows from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

His institute, Kerala Magic Academy Research Centre, teaches both contemporary illusion and traditional Indian street magic like the ‘Great Indian Rope Trick’, ‘Green Mango Trick’ and the ‘Indian Basket trick’.

‘India has rich culture and history in magic. It still amazes the western world with traditional magic such as green mango tree and Indian cups and balls. Unfortunately many amazing magic acts have been lost as they have not been shared with the next generation,’ he said.

Muthukad’s inspiration is American illusionist David Copperfield, a living legend known for his story telling and illusion magic.

‘He – makes the difficult look easy and impossible the easiest. He adds beauty to magic like music to poetry,’ he said. Copperfield created headlines around the world when he made the Statue of Liberty disappear, levitated over the Grand Canyon and walked through the Great Wall of China.

Muthukad himself began as a traditional magician before moving on complicated stage illusions. One of his popular illusion tricks is the ‘fire escape’ trick – in which he disappears through a fire hatch.

‘Traditional Indian magic concentrates more on mystery while the West concentrates more on entertainment values. But ultimately both evoke wonder,’ Muthukad said.

Like Copperfield Muthukad first performed his tricks in public at 10.

‘It was a flop. Then I decided to make my performance a unique one – and my performance was accepted. And I pledged my future to magic,’ he said.

Youth Congress membership set to touch half million in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (IANS) The membership of the Youth Congress is all set to touch the half million-mark in Kerala, a Congress legislator said Sunday.

Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunadh, who will contest for the post of Youth Congress president in the elections to be held in August, told IANS that initial indications are that the total number of Youth Congress members in the state will touch half a million.

‘We can’t make a comparison to the past because such a membership drive has never taken place,’ Vishnunadh said.

‘There could be close to a lakh new members and we feel that there would be at least one lakh women members also. The correct figures are expected in the coming days as the two returning officers are busy compiling the data,’ Vishnunadh said.

The minimum age for entry into the Youth Congress is 18 and the maximum age is 35. This time instead of dividing the Youth Congress based on the 14 districts of the state, each of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state have been divided into two.

Vipin Jose, a member of the Youth Congress who is planning to contest for the post of president from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha unit said: ‘The best part this time is that it has been made very clear in the rules that one person will have only one party post and hence more number of people can move up the ladder. This time a person can take membership from where he lives only.’

Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot and Mohammed Azharuddin had come to the state for interaction with Youth Congress members.

Mistaken for pirate, Indian fisherman shot off Oman coast

In what appears to be a case of mistaken identity, crew from a passing foreign cargo ship off the coast of Oman fired upon a group of fishermen, fearing they were pirates, and killed one of them. Another fisherman was injured in the incident on Monday morning.

Raju Ambrose, 34, was declared ‘dead on arrival’ by doctors at the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah on the southwestern coast of Oman, said Manpreet Singh, president of the Indian Social Club Salalah. Ambrose, hailing from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, is survived by his wife, two teenaged daughters and a seven-year-old son.

Apparently, shots were fired without any warning or provocation from the ship at the group of nearly 75 fishermen who had set off from Salalah on 25 boats. Singh said it appears the ship’s crew mistook the fishermen for pirates.

“The crew opened fire indiscriminately at a place called Sarbatat off the coast of Salalah and two people were injured,” said Singh. “Both the victims were rushed to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah but Ambrose was declared as having been brought dead on arrival. The other fisherman, Sebastian, who was on a different boat, was treated and later discharged.”

An eyewitness said that by the time the fishermen realised that they were being fired upon, it was too late. “We were fishing when we suddenly heard a loud noise that took everyone by surprise,” said Joy, who was on the boat with Ambrose.

“At first, I thought that the sound was coming from the ship. But later, I realised that people on the ship were firing at us. We go out into the deep sea quite often, but such an incident has never happened. In fact, we wave at all the ships that pass by the area.”

Joy added that the fishermen tried to steer the boat away, but in vain. “All of a sudden, a bullet hit Raju and he fell overboard. The other fisherman on the boat, Francis, and I managed to pull him out of the water and then we fled for our lives. We took him to the shore with the help of other fishermen and from there to the Sultan Qaboos Hospital, but it was too late.”

Many cargo ships on the high seas off the Horn of Africa have opted for armed protection after a spate of attacks and hijacks by pirates based in Somalia for ransom.

Houseboats become USP of tourist hotspot Kerala

Alleppey/Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Apr 17 (ANI): As northern India sizzles in scorching summer, most of those bit by the travel bug are making a beeline for tourist spots Kerala.

With its fleet of black-hulled houseboats, the backwaters of Kerala entice the tourists, both domestic and international, to ”God”s Own Country”.

Most of the domestic tourists arriving in Kerala are from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Bengal.

“We are from Punjab. We have chosen this destination, as backwaters are a different kind of experience. All the other tourists generally go to the higher altitudes and all other places but we want to have a soothing experience and we are really looking forward to the backwaters of Kerala,” said Vikram Singh, a tourist.

A typical backwater cruise takes tourists on a 40-km journey through the Vembanad Lake, India”s longest, which is spread over 1,512 sq km.

The cruises have packages tailored for all budgets with a one-night cruise costing from Rs 3,000-25,000 as houseboats now come equipped with power showers in bio-toilets, LCD television sets, air-conditioners, AC-fitted lounges and even jacuzzis. They even have chefs onboard to prepare some of Kerala”s culinary specials.

Tour operators say the period from April to September is a good time to attract domestic tourists when there is a lull in international arrivals.

“Actually the foreign tourists are coming in the months of December, January and February. And the rates will be very comfortable in April and May also. It will not be that high and it will be affordable for the domestic people also. After the examinations (are over), people come in large numbers to have a nice day in our houseboats, to see the serene beauty of the backwaters which is unique,” said Abhilash Sreekumar, proprietor of Aria Holidays, a houseboat cruise operator.

Meanwhile, the state Tourism Department authorities have decided to extend the experience of these floating hotels beyond Alleppey, and plans to give licenses for operating houseboats in Ashtamudi Lake in nearby Kollam district as well.

Authorities are creating new landing points and also developing new backwater circuits in other districts. More houseboats are being constructed.

“It has been structured as luxury resorts or luxury segment properties. And a typical houseboat cruise starts during the day, move along the backwaters to see the village community life, spend the night there and wake up to the early morning sun in the houseboat itself,” said M Sivasankar, Director, Kerala Tourism Department in provincial capital Thiruvananthapuram.

In 2008, Kerala witnessed 7.6 million domestic tourist arrivals, showing a growth of 14.28 per cent from the previous year. (ANI)

Tampering of law student’s marks rocks Kerala assembly

Thiruvananthapuram, March 16 (IANS) The Kerala assembly Tuesday witnessed uproarious scenes and a walkout by the opposition over the alleged tampering of marks of law students, details of which are said to have been leaked by a Kerala University official who is the wife of the deputy leader of opposition.

Sulekha, the university’s controller of exams, is said to have discovered that marks of an LL.B final year student were raised from 34 to 44 in the Public International Law and Human Rights paper. Sulekha is the wife of deputy leader of Congress in the assembly G.Karthikeyan.

Congress legislator P.C.Vishnunadh moved an adjournment motion on the issue immediately after question hour but Speaker K. Radhakrishnan ruled that since Education Minister M.A.Baby was out of station, attending a function in which Kerala Governor R.S.Gavai was taking part, the motion could not be taken up.

This irked the opposition and Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy said as per the convention of the house, if a minister was absent some other minister could give a reply as the government had a collective responsibility.

This was opposed by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar, who said the question of collective responsibility did not arise on this issue.

‘The education minister has taken leave of absence from the speaker. Moreover, to reply to an issue in less than an hour for a minister not handling the department is not an easy task,’ said Vijayakumar.

But Chandy remained adamant and said what Vijayakumar pointed out did not go with the tradition of the house.

‘We also have been in government and we also have been absent from the assembly at times, but we handed over the responsibility to other ministers. Any minister can get the required information in an hour’s time to give a reply on an issue. What happened today is a black day in the history of the assembly,’ Chandy said, leading the opposition out of the house.

Later speaking to IANS, Vishnunadh said early this month a senior official of the Kerala University on perusal of certain records found that the marks list of students had been tampered with.

‘In the answer for Public International Law and Human Rights paper of final year LL.B course, a student had got 34 marks and this was marked on the counterfoil of the answer sheet. But in the tabulation sheet, he was found to have got 44 marks. On seeing this, the controller of examination called for the answer sheet and found that the student’s actual marks were 34. It was also found that an error of this nature was spotted in the case of another student as well,’ said Vishnunadh.

Earlier, during a meeting of the Kerala University Syndicate, members belonging to the Student Federation of India – the student wing of the ruling CPI-M – accused Sulekha of leaking details of the incident.

‘Our student activists who staged a protest march to the office of the university, yesterday (Monday) are now in jail. We demand a thorough investigation into the scam by an external agency because the credibility of the university is at stake,’ added Vishnunadh.

Modalities of BrahMos-II project to be finalized soon

Tiruchirapalli, Sep. 1 (ANI): The modalities for developing hypersonic missile BrahMos-II by the Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace are in the final phase of finalization.

BrahMos Aerospace CEO and managing director A Sivathanu Pillai told reporters here on Tuesday that a final shape of the project, aimed at developing the aerial version of BrahMos missile that could traverse at speeds between Mach 5 to Mach 7, would emerge shortly.

The design team had already been lined up and discussions would be held shortly between the joint venture partners on investments, sharing of technical responsibilities, administration and sharing of manufacturing facility infrastructure, he added.

Supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, which has a capability of carrying 300 kilograms conventional warheads at a speed of around 2.8 Mach, has already been inducted by the Army and the Navy.

Work related to the design and development of this version had been fruitful and the advanced missile, which weighs 0.5 tonne less than that of the three-tonne land version BrahMos, was ready and the company awaited the modified SUKOI-30 MKI aircraft that would carry the weapon.

Pillai said he was hopeful that the target for induction of the air version set for 2012 would be achieved.

After being fitted on an aircraft, BrahMos will be the only cruise missile with the capability of being launched from land, sea and air, he said.

To a query on export potential of BrahMos missile, Pillai said a number countries evinced keen interest in it, but the priority was to meet the high domestic requirement.

For meeting the demand, the company was in the process of upgrading the production infrastructure at multiple locations besides enhancing component suppliers by including new large and medium sized industries.

On BrahMos Aeropsace’s Thiruvananthapuram facility, Pillai said seven acres of land in possession of Indian Air force adjacent to the main campus was expected to be handed over to BrahMos Aerospace shortly. (ANI)

Muthoot’s family alleges conspiracy behind murder

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 29 (ANI): A week after Kerala business tycoon Paul Muthoot was found murdered, his family has refuted Kerala Police’s road rage claim saying that there’s something more creepy behind his death.

Jnanamma Thomas, Muthoot’s grandmother refuted Kerala police’s road rage angle, alleging a cover-up of a brutal murder of her grandson .

“They did not tell us there was an accident angle to it in the beginning. But only they told there was an accident,” she said.

George P Easo, a family member said, “Politicians are changing their statements every other day. We don’t know whom to believe.”

Earlier, Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has dismissed opposition Congress charge that his son had links in connection with the recent murder of Muthoot group scion Paul M George.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Balakrishnan said, “My son (Beenish Kodiyeri) has no relation with the case whatsoever. The allegation that Beenish had connections with wanted gangsters was to create a ‘mystery’ over the case.”

Rejecting the charge that the Home Department was trying to interfere in the investigation process, he said a deliberate attempt was being made by vested interests to hamper the probe.

The government had nothing to hide in the case and was open to “any sort of investigation”, he added.

Balakrishnan also announced that a special investigation team had been constituted under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Vinson M. Paul to probe the murder of the Paul Muthoot George.

He said that the team was constituted as the inter-district ramifications of the case and deeper links would have to be probed in detail. The investigation would cover links of Muthoot George with goonda elements.

According to the police theory, a gang of nearly 22 men was behind the murder of Paul.

Paul was killed last Friday night on the Alappuzha-Changanassery road. A friend who was with him was injured and is in hospital; both were stabbed.

Paul, who was based in Delhi, had recently returned to Kerala to take charge of the leisure and hospitality arm. He was returning from an under-construction resort at Mararikulam when he was stabbed to death.

On Sunday, police arrested 12 persons, including notorious criminals, identified as Om Prakash and Rajesh. (ANI)

A bribery case involving Rs.25 and two decades!

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) It took the Indian judiciary exactly 20 years, one month and one day to decide a corruption case involving an alleged bribe of Rs.25, with the Supreme Court finally giving the accused – a Kerala clerk – the benefit of doubt and acquitting him.

The case dates back to April 25, 1989, when A. Subair, a lower division clerk working in the Sub-Regional Transport Office at Attingal in Kerala, was caught allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.25 from one Manaf for issuing a driving licence.

After he was caught, Subair was arrested and later granted bail as he faced trial before a designated anti-corruption court at Thiruvananthapuram, which held him guilty of corruption and sentenced him to one year in jail along with a fine of a few hundred rupees. But the process took almost a decade as the court pronounced its ruling in 1998.

Against the trial court’s ruling, Subair approached the Kerala High Court, which too confirmed his guilt and endorsed the punishment given by the trial court. But here too, the court took its own sweet time and gave the ruling in 2004.

Subair eventually approached the apex court, which pronounced its verdict Tuesday and acquitted him of the charges of accepting the bribe, giving him the benefit of doubt.

But a closer scrutiny of the apex court ruling reveals how the snail’s pace of judiciary may have helped Subair escape the clutches of law.

As Subair’s trial initially stretched up to a decade, complainant Munaf left India for the Gulf in pursuit of better opportunities and this resulted in the prosecution losing one of its prime witnesses.

Though the trial court and then also the high court held Subair guilty of accepting the bribe, ignoring the prosecution’s inability to produce Munaf to depose before them, the apex court pointed out in its ruling that absence of Munaf rendered the prosecution unable to prove if Subair at all demanded the bribe, a must for his conviction under the anti-corruption law.

By and by some other crucial witnesses too were unable to recall the minute details of the incident. This resulted in the trial court declaring some more crucial witnesses hostile.

Though the trial court and high court convicted Subair, ignoring various weaknesses in the prosecution version, the apex court pointed out those weaknesses and eventually ended up acquitting him.

Carpool website to help Indian Kerala techies go green

Thiruvananthapuram, May 25 (IANS) Companies based in Kerala’s Technopark, an IT park here, Monday launched a carpooling website for IT professionals in the state as part of its green computing initiatives.

The website, www.parkcarpool.in, was jointly launched by the Group of Technopark Companies (GTECH), a body representing the chief executives of the Technopark firms, and Palnar Transmedia, a city-based software firm.

The site would encourage IT professionals to travel together and thereby save money, fuel and reduce global warming and traffic on the roads, GTECH officials said.

Those who are interested can register in the website for free by submitting some basic information and search for travel mates who commute to the Technopark campus or Infopark in Kochi.

Kerala has more than 30,000 IT professionals working at these two IT parks.

GTECH President S. Rama Rao said there was an urgent need to create awareness in the industry about the benefits of carpooling primarily to reduce the harmful effects of carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles.

GTECH secretary Satish Babu said the primary objective of the carpooling was to enhance environmental consciousness.

“This unique model of GTECH acts as a catalyst in promoting the cause of environmental sustainability in Kerala. It is also in tune with the National Policy on Conservation of Fuel,” said Babu.
