Ludhiana hosts seminar on Sufism

Ludhiana, Sep 19(ANI): Ludhiana recently played host to a national seminar on Sufism. This time, the theme was the influence of Sufism on modern times.

The Sahitaya Academy of New Delhi and the Punjab Sahitaya Academy organized the seminar.

The seminar also focused on the ‘pain of separation from God’ and intellectuals, poets and Sufi singers.

“Sufism says that God, whom a man looks for all over, is within him. And once he realizes this fact, he will be free of his ego and will find happiness,” said Vaasthe Mohi, a Sindhi poet from Ahmedabad.

While, Gulshan Majith, a poet from Jammu and Kashmir, said: “When God is everything, so what is the importance of religion and caste discrimination, this is the message of Sufism. Shaivaism, Buddhism and Sufism give same message to the world and consider this world as the manifestation of that supreme power and do not make a distinction with the other. There are no boundaries. Everybody in this world is equal for God.”

The participants also put forth the argument that many Punjabi poets make use of themes from popular Punjabi culture. r. Chandraprakash Deval, a poet from Rajasthan, said Sufism is the paramount method to fight terrorism.

“Sufism is the best way to fight terrorism. If the minds of people can be changed, they will start respecting other religions, humanity and the feeling of brotherhood and secularism will increase, terrorism will be finished then. So to fight terrorism it is important to popularize the way shown by Sufism, adopt and follow that way and spread the feeling of brotherhood,” Deval said.

Sufi singer Balbir Kaur, who also teaches singing at Guru Nanak College in Ludhiana, held the audience spellbound and she also highlighted that school students must be made aware of the great cultural heritage, traditional folk art and literature of the Sufi saints, to promote Punjabi language.

Associating Sufism with any one religion is against its very basic tenets. Underlining this basic fact, renowned Sufi singers Idrim Khan and Skakur Khan from Rajasthan sung the verses of Bulle Shah, Guru Nanak, Kabir and Sajjan Shah. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Action plan to phase out consumption of HCFC is on track: Ramesh

New Delhi, Sep 16 (ANI): Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday that India has developed a comprehensive Road Map and Action Plan to phase-out of production and consumption of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in various sectors.

Addressing the gathering during the 15th International Ozone Day here Ramesh said: “The Government of India has taken a number of policy measures, fiscal and regulatory, to encourage the early adoption of alternative technologies in this area by existing and new enterprises.”

Ramesh hailed the Montreal Protocol as the most successful international treaty to ever achieve universal participation.

“At a time when the world is trying to solve the problem of climate change, the International Ozone Day provided a timely reminder of how international cooperation can help to solve major global environmental problems,” Ramesh added.

India is one of the first developing countries to join the Montreal Protocol and pledge its commitment to protect the Ozone Layer.

As a part of the accelerated phase-out of CFCs, India has completely phased out the production and consumption of CFCs as on 1 August 2008, 17 months prior to the agreed schedule.

Ramesh informed that over 97percent of controlled Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) have been phased out by the Montreal Protocol.

“The end of 2009 will mark another significant milestone in the history of its implementation, with the use of potent ODSs -CFCs, Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) and Halons, except pharmaceutical-grade CFCs used in the manufacture of Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs) – being ceased completely,” he said

The CFCs required for manufacturing for MDIs used by Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients are still available in India, a national transition strategy to phase them out by 2013 is currently under implementation.

“The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank recently also launched the India: Chiller Energy Efficiency Project to accelerate the conversion of CFC-based chillers using new, more energy efficient technologies,” Ramesh said.

This year’s theme for the ozone day was ‘Universal participation – Ozone protection unifies the World.’ (ANI)

MJ’s secret sister JohVonnie reveals her ‘snub’ pain

London, September 14 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s half-sister has revealed that the pop legend wasn’t warm to her when she met him during a family get together.

JohVonnie Jackson, whose mum was a lover of MJ’s dad Joe, is close to her father.

She claims that the Jacksons have shunned her for 35 years but was once invited to the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s Neverland ranch in 2003 when the clan got together.

Also, JohVonnie alleges that she wasn’t allowed to talk to either the late singer or her half-sister Janet when she attended their concerts.

“I feel rejected by some of my family. It’s upsetting and hurtful,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

Referring to her meeting with the late singer she said: “It was a big moment for me. But Michael was looking at me and seemed cold. He just said, ‘Hi’ and then he saw my daughter Yasmine and was fascinated with her.”

Jackson made a mistake pronouncing her niece’s name and called her ‘Jasmine,’ which JohVonnie corrected.

She recollected: “He said, ‘OK, Yasmine with a Y’, and that was it. He never acknowledged that I was his sister, there was no hug or kiss, not even a handshake. No physical contact at all.

“I wanted to embrace him. I thought he would want to go some place quiet and sit and talk with me and ask me about my life and get to know me a little better.

“It was very hurtful. He was not interested at all.

“With my daughter he was totally different. She got hugs and kisses, everything I didn’t get. I was a little jealous. But there was a bunch of people there and I never did get a chance to speak to Michael properly. Again, there was this theme that I felt shut out.”

Apparently, JohVonnie spent that night at a nearby hotel and returned to Neverland the next day but she didn’t get to see her iconic half-brother.

She said: “Michael was in the main house. Yasmine and Paris were off playing for hours. Paris is such a sweet girl.”

Though she said she talked to brother Jermaine and sister Rebbie but insists: “None of my other siblings acknowledged me much.” (ANI)

Saving the historical monuments to preserve cultural heritage of Punjab

Amritsar, Sep.10 (ANI): An endeavour is underway to preserve various heritage buildings of Punjab State in a bid to treasure the cultural heritage including historical monuments, which can help in boosting tourism in Punjab.

The palaces and Havelis across Punjab bespeak glorious heritage. These historically important buildings include religious places belonging to different faiths and can attract tourists to Punjab.

The Sheesh Mahal and Qila Mubarak at Patiala, Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s summer palace at Amritsar or ancestral home of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at Khatkar Kalan – they are important sites that need to be preserved for the coming generations.

“Every community, society has a very precious heritage which has to be and can be transferred to the next generation and this is the responsibility of any civil society to transfer that heritage to the coming generation if you don’t perform that duty, that is a sin, that’s crime,” said Dr. Sukhdev Singh, Punjab State convener, Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

To spread awareness about preservation of these heritage sites, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage recently organized a workshop on the theme ‘Cultural Heritage and Media’ in Amritsar.

The event highlighted the fact that popularizing existing heritage buildings and protecting sites of cultural importance, presently in ruins due to negligence and development activities, ought to be the main priority.

There were proposals to convert heritage sites into museums and heritage hotels for tourists to get a glimpse of Punjab’s rich cultural heritage.

It was suggested that the restored monuments could be commercially used on public-private partnership basis.

“Nuclear families have become more common than joint families and it has resulted in a big change in the whole system. Like in our system, the kids are taught to respect elders and follow the path of honesty. People get equal share in all institutions like in home, office and agriculture but today they are aware of especially one aspect of their lives,” said Paramjeet Singh , Prof. Of Architechture, Gurunanak University, Amritsar.

“There is a significant relation between tourism and the heritage sites because some tourists surely have some interest in what’s the history of people and what’s the culture of people. They don’t come here just to see the huge marble buildings. They don’t want to see the modern architecture, which infact is mostly western, they come here to know about the past of this place, so it surely encourages tourism,” said Dr. Sukhdev Singh.

Amritsar is the heritage city of Punjab. The city is known globally for the revered Golden Temple, one of the pilgrimage centers, which stands intact and was built nearly 400 years ago.

The heritage tour in Amritsar remains incomplete without visiting the old city, known for its traditional market and centuries old residential houses.

Be it the historic Jallianwala Bagh or the Summer Palace, the royal residence of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, they take every visitor here to the era they stand testimony of. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)

Narayana Murthy praises General Budget

Bangalore, July 7 (ANI): Chairman and chief mentor of the Infosys Technologies Ltd NR Narayana Murthy has said the General Budget will bring the economy back on rails.

Addressing reporters here on Monday, Murthy expressed confidence that the budget was pro-growth.

“Given the fact that they have increased allocation to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act scheme, to national food security scheme, to highways, to education, they have something for everybody, something in every area. So, I do think this has pretty good chance of bringing economy back on rails,” Murthy said.

The government ramped up spending for this fiscal year to support a fragile economic recovery, spooking stock and bond markets with plans for record borrowing and the biggest budget deficit in 16 years.

Investors had hoped the new government would use a strong re-election mandate to push through pro-market reforms, but the budget it unveiled lacked major policy changes and focused on increased borrowing and spending to aid farmers and the poor.

Stocks tumbled nearly six per cent, bond yields spiked and the rupee fell 1.4 per cent after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, sticking to the Congress Party’s theme of “inclusive growth”, said the fiscal deficit for the year ending March 2010 would increase to 6.8 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). International Year of Astronomy raises millions of eyes to the skies

Berlin, July 2 (ANI): The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) has achieved a milestone of sorts, in the sense that over a million people have already looked at the sky through a telescope for the first time, and even more have newly engaged in astronomy in just six months this year.

This is just one of many achievements, as countless ongoing projects and planned initiatives indicate that the IYA2009 is well on the way towards achieving many of its goals.

UNESCO and the International Astronomical Union (IAU) launched 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy under the theme “The Universe, Yours to Discover”.

The IYA2009 is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, with events at national, regional and global levels throughout the whole of 2009.

Now, halfway through 2009, much has been achieved and even more can be expected in the future.

With the aim of providing low-cost telescopes that offer views far better than those obtained by Galileo Galilei some 400 years ago, the venture has picked up significant pace since the IYA2009 began.

By the end of July, the first 60,000 Galileoscopes will have been shipped, and a further 100,000 are currently in production.

More than 4000 Galileoscopes have been generously donated by the IYA2009 and individuals to organizations and schools in developing countries.

This gesture aptly demonstrates the commitment of astronomy enthusiasts to the IYA2009 goal of making the skies accessible to all.

But perhaps the most impressive figures for the IYA2009 have come from the national activities that have brought together hundreds of thousands of people in many countries for astronomy-themed events.

According to IAU President Catherine Cesarsky, “It’s amazing to see just how far the International Year of Astronomy 2009 has progressed over the last six months. The hard work put in by professional and amateur astronomers is making the IYA2009′s theme, ‘The Universe, Yours to Discover’ a reality.” (ANI)

Jacko’s funeral expected to be bigger than Diana’s

London, June 29 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s funeral may be bigger than that of Princess Diana, say reports.

Diana’s funeral saw a gathering of 250,000 people in London’s Hyde Park alone, and it was watched on TV by 2.5 billion people worldwide, a record for any television broadcast.

If experts are to be believed, Jackson’s funeral may equal or even exceed the astonishing figure recorded during the service for Diana.

According to the Daily Express, hundreds of thousands of fans from around the world are expected to line the streets of Los Angeles for Jackson’s funeral, expected towards the end of this week.

A televised funeral service will in all likelihood be followed by a procession through the streets before a private burial.

The newspaper also says that Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine, along with his eight brothers and sisters and three children, are overseeing the preparations.

They are still considering the difficult decision of choosing a final resting place for the global icon, even though some fans have suggested that the star be buried at the Neverland ranch in California, where he once built his own theme park. (ANI)

They do not try to ape any other existing designers; they do not try to ape the west. It is all their imagination. So it is very special to them,” said Pooja Chopra.

Choreographer of the show Rohit Verma said that the best part of the show was that it was not too much expanded in all aspects.

“The best thing about the show was like there were limited garments, six girls, two guys and one kid. It was fun doing it and I enjoyed every moment of it. The clothes were very dramatic and the scenes were very good so I enjoyed every bit of it,” said Rohit Verma.

The show offered a big platform to promote budding and future designers from this fashion-designing institute. (ANI)

An all-women consultative meet for peace held in New Delhi

New Delhi, June 24 (ANI): Professional women from northeast India recently shared a platform to discuss ways to bring peace, ensure justice and political rights ruptured by decades of conflict in the northeast region of the country.

The occasion was the first ever-consultative conclave of women from northeast organised by the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network in collaboration with the India International Center in national capital.

With the theme “Northeast Women Initiative for Peace”, the meet was an effort to look at conflict issues in a holistic and strategic way.

Women, in the northeast, have played a major role in several social movements.

“Meetings like this is to say we can make a difference, every person can make a difference, every man, woman in the region can make a difference and this is what we are trying to say,” said Binalakshmi Nephram, Founder of the Manipur Gun Survivor Network.

“There are so many women groups all over Nagaland, all over northeast, all working for on the same issue; peace, conflict prevention. Why we are having this meeting is because this is a platform where we can all converge together and work for a bigger issues because when we look around, women organisation in all seven states, if we all come together on a powerful base, we can reach out to a bigger movement,” said Elizabeth Imti, Parliamentary Affairs Coordinator, Control Arms Foundation, India.

The conclave gave an opportunity to discuss and plan out several strategies based on problems faced especially by women due to rise in armed conflicts and violence in the region.

The meet also looked at measures in building peace and understanding among the different communities.

“In northeast, we have stereotype ideas about different people. So when we come together, those stereotype breaks. When you get together, when you talk, discuss. It’s through dialogue, there is better understanding and that’s how you should go forward and I’m sure something will come out of it,” said Uddipana Goswami, Media Consultant and scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

“The efforts taken up by ‘Women Gun Survivors Network’ are worth praising. In this interactive programme, we got chance to interact with other activists and we take up issues related to northeast. That way, we can share our views. We need such initiatives in future as well,” said Malem Ningthoujam, a member of the Manipur Student Association in Delhi. It’s good we are having conclave and seminars like this because most people are not aware of what is happening in Manipur and northeast states. So with women taking this initiative, I think it is a good message to the men out there who are taking up their guns and fighting and not actually thinking about peaceful talks like this. I am very happy to be a part of this,” said Hommiza Raman, a participant.

The meeting drew up policies for women to strategize action plans in bringing peace and justice in the region. It also looked at the efforts taken up at local, national and international level to end violence in northeast.

The peace conclave will be held in the different northeast states throughout the year. By Kaikho Paphro (ANI)

Tobacco is the world’s leading preventable cause of death. According to WHO, tobacco has been claiming killing more than five million lives every year.

Around 80 percent of smokers live in developing countries, where smoking rates have risen sharply in recent years alongside a ramping-up of tobacco marketing and production in poorer states.

The WHO supports bans on tobacco marketing and sponsorship, prohibitions of smoking in public buildings, and high taxes on tobacco products. (ANI)

Amy Winehouse, Duffy in contention for next Bond theme song

Washington, May 22 (ANI): English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse may have to battle it out with Duffy to land the opportunity of recording next James Bond flick’s theme song.
