Mining company says latest Rosebery heavy metals testing is good news

The owners of a mine on Tasmania’s west coast say the results of water testing at Rosebery should allay residents’ fears about heavy metals poisoning.

Some Rosebery residents are taking legal action against the mining company MMG, claiming mine discharge has made 30 people sick.

The Health Department’s independent investigation ruled out heavy metal poisoning, and last month MMG gave more than 400 mine workers and relatives the all-clear after testing them for metal exposure.

The company used a public meeting on Wednesday (May the 6th) to release more test results.

Mine manager John Lamb says the tests found no elevated metal levels in the town’s water supply, and that the metals are less easily absorbed into the body.

“Results were in line with some work that the EPA did in 2008, in fact generally lower,” he said.

Mr Lamb says the Health Department has been told about elevated lead levels in two water tanks.

The Rosebery Toxic Heavy Metals Taskforce says it will review the results over the next few days.

Federal Court hears arguments over NAPLAN dispute

The Federal Court has heard the Australian Education Union (AEU) is not acting in the broad educational interest by threatening to boycott national literacy and numeracy tests.

More than 1.1 million year three, five, seven and nine students are scheduled to sit the NAPLAN test next week.

The AEU argues the test results data will be used to unfairly rank schools.

It is pressing ahead with plans for a test boycott despite a Fair Work Australia ruling yesterday finding that the proposed industrial action is unlawful.

Lawyers for the Government’s Fair Work ombudsman have told a Federal Court hearing in Melbourne that the union is acting only in the interests of teachers, rather than in broad educational interests.

The court has heard massive logistical preparations have been made to deliver the test and the matter is urgent.

The union’s lawyers told the court the data would be false and inaccurate and would lead to teachers being badgered by parents.

The hearing continues.

Any Federal Court ruling on Naplan test boycotts will only affect Victoria, the Northern Territory and the ACT, where teachers come under the federal award system.

“My April results, like the three previous ones, registered a negative outcome for the HI virus,” he added. (ANI)

UK Air Force limits flights after ash found on planes

Britain has suspended non-essential flights of its Typhoon fighter jets to make safety checks after ash from an Icelandic volcano was found on some planes, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.

“It’s a routine safety precaution. We have temporarily suspended non-essential flying,” a ministry spokeswoman said.

The planes had flown on a routine sortie on Wednesday.

The National Air Traffic Service, a British air traffic body, said the decision had not affected civilian flights which have only just resumed after a week of delays caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland.

“We’ve made no change to our operations,” NATS spokesman Patrick Horwood said.

“The Ministry of Defence flies in different air space,” he said, without giving further details.

The ministry spokeswoman said some of the Royal Air Force planes were being tested for damage to their engines.

“Initially it was was dust-like deposits, so they looked into it and confirmed it was ash, and now we’re waiting for the outcome of the investigation to see if there was any damage caused,” she said.

Test results are due later on Thursday.

European air traffic agency Eurocontrol said earlier air traffic was likely to be back to normal on Thursday, and that it expected 28,000 to 29,000 flights to operate in Europe.

Alcohol tester to expose drink fraud developed

London, March 29 (ANI): Experts have come up with a briefcase-sized testing kit that helps measure alcohol content in drinks.

The new portable device, manufactured by Unisensor Sensorsysteme, also of Karlsruhe, was said to be available for 3,000 pounds and produced almost similar results to powerful lab equipment.

Dirk Lachenmeier of the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation testing agency in Karlsruhe, Germany, who helped develop and test the technology, explained a spectrometer within the system played a key role in measuring the alcohol content.

“It only takes 30 to 60 seconds,” New Scientist quoted Lachenmeier as saying.

The test results have been published in Chemistry Central Journal. (ANI)

Viagra laced fruit juices flowing in Malaysia!

Kuala Lumpur, Sept 14 (ANI): After being detected in coffee mixtures and sweets, Viagra has now been found in fruit juices.

After raiding more than 30 retailers and distributors dealing in the fruit juice, enforcement officers from the Health Ministry in Malaysia seized several hundred thousand ringgit worth of the product.

This followed after the ministry sent samples of the product for tests which confirmed the presence of sildenafil, reports The New Straits Times Online.

Sildenafil citrate, sold as Viagra, Revatio and various other trade names, is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.

According to a Health Ministry source, this was the first time they had encountered a case where sildenafil had been mixed with fruit juices.

The mixture is potent and deadly to people suffering from heart disease and high blood pressure.

“It was brought to our attention after several people complained to the ministry about the suspicious fruit juice,” the source said.

“The producer and distributor had claimed that the fruit juice had been produced from selected natural herbs which could improve sexual performance of men and women,” the source added.

Following test results, investigations were conducted to identify retailers and distributors involved in selling the fruit juice.

“More than 30 simultaneous raids were carried out nationwide. Officers were also concerned that the retailers and distributors would hide their stocks as the product had also been sold via direct selling,” the source said.

“At the raid at the company’s headquarters in Subang Jaya, three marketing officers and the store caretaker were questioned by authorities,” the source added.

Investigations revealed that the fruit juice had been in the local market for the past six months and had received good response from consumers.

The consumer needs to mix the powder with water before drinking. (ANI)

Jacko’s final autopsy report to take four to six weeks

Washington, June 27 (ANI): Late singer Michael Jackson’s final autopsy reports are likely to take up to six weeks, according to the chief coroner investigating his death.

The cops have seized vials of prescription drugs from the King Of Pop’s rented house in Los Angeles as part of their ongoing investigation.

The coroner officials have not found any evidence of foul play in Jackson’s death.

They are taking extra time to complete toxicology, neuropathology and pulmonary tests before determining the exact cause.

“The cause of death has been deferred, which means that the medical examiner has ordered additional testing, such as toxicology and other studies, and those tests we anticipate will take approximately four to six weeks to complete,” Contactmusic quoted Chief coroner and investigator Craig Harvey as saying.

“At that time, once those test results have been completed, we anticipate being able to close the case and issue a final cause of death.

“There was no indication of any external trauma and no indication of foul play on the body Mr. Michael Jackson,” he added. (ANI)

Russell Crowe’s dangerous weight gain

Washington, May 27 (ANI): Hollywood actor Russell Crowe has revealed that he dangerously gained weight after filming his flick ‘Body Of Lies’, which even made it difficult for him to get out of a car.

Though the ‘A Good Year’ actor has lost and gained weight for multifarious flicks, he admitted that he had never got so fat.

Crowe revealed that he decided to have a health check when once he found himself struggling to get out of his car.

He said that test results showed that his cholesterol levels were dangerously high.

“At one point I worried about it from a health point of view because I had my cholesterol checked. It had reached dangerous territory,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“I was surprised that my body was taking all of it so seriously. I was enjoying myself, because I was eating and drinking what I liked, but my body was objecting. The most frightening thing was having to rock back and forwards to get out of a car. Instead of stepping out, I had to tip myself out,” he added. (ANI)

South Korea reports first possible swine-flu case

Seoul – South Korean authorities were investigating a possible case of a swine-flu infection Tuesday.

An influenza infection was detected in a 51-year-old South Korean woman who returned from a trip to Mexico on the weekend, the Korean Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The centre was testing whether the woman contracted the mutated H1N1 virus, the strain identified in the swine-flu outbreak in Mexico, which may have cost up to 149 lives so far. Test results are expected in one or two days, the centre said.

The woman was among three South Koreans who tested after displaying flu-like symptoms following their return from Mexico, but the other two have already tested negative for influenza. (dpa)
