World Cup hosts fear nobody, says coach Parreira

Hosts South Africa “fear nobody” in the World Cup, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said after his side completed their pre-tournament warmup programme with a weekend win over fellow finalists Denmark.

The Brazilian said Bafana Bafana, ranked 83rd in the world and previously tipped to be the worst host team yet in the 70-year history of the World Cup, had shown themselves ready for the tournament, which kicks off on Friday.

“Everyone has to respect us and we fear nobody,” said Parreira as South Africa looked ahead to a last week of preparation having beaten the Danes 1-0 in Pretoria on Saturday.

“I believe the team has shown itself ready for the World Cup. We will go into the tournament with confidence and now we can start to dream about a position, about achieving something,” the former World Cup winner said.

Katlego Mphela’s late goal handed South Africa a third successive win and stretched to 12 games their unbeaten run since Parreira returned to coach the team in November last year.

“This was a very special win because it was against a good team with lots of experience. We played with confidence and showed we were willing to compete.

“The path we chose for the World Cup has been proven to be the right one. The players bought into the vision that they could play the ball on the ground, keep the shape and be well organised.”

South Africa open the World Cup against Mexico at the cavernous Soccer City and Parreira was quick to temper any bold predictions of success in the tournament’s first match.

“Mexico have proved they are a very good team. It’s a very difficult group that we have and we have to take each game as a final. But the competition is open and we will go into it with confidence.” They also meet Uruguay and France in their group.

Parreira also had a word of praise for a sudden surge of support for the team, reflected in capacity crowds at all their home matches over the last two months.

“The people are behind us because we have shown them the team is improving. The spectators have fallen in love with Bafana Bafana again.”

Man forces son to eat school report

London, May 27 (IANS) Furious at his son’s poor school report, a father in France forced the boy to chew and swallow the sheets of paper and later admitted that he had ‘lost his temper’ and had ‘over-reacted’.

The angry father stuffed the school report into his 12-year-old son’s mouth and ordered him to eat it earlier this month.

The boy found it difficult to eat the three sheets of paper. His father then attempted to force it down his throat with his finger, a court in Poitiers, western France, was told.

The next day, a teacher at his school noticed the boy’s bruised lips and black eye, leading to the father’s arrest. He was charged with assault, Daily Mail reported Thursday.

‘It was a poor report and I lost my temper. I sent him up to his room, then followed him up there with the report. I over-reacted. I have apologised to my son for what I did and things have been much better since,’ the man was quoted as telling the court.

The man was handed a two months suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay his son a symbolic one euro in damages.

Disgraced soccer star King takes up art classes to control temper

London, May 16 (ANI): Disgraced soccer star Marlon King, who is serving an 18-month sentence for molesting a 20 girl at London’s Soho Revue Bar and breaking her nose when she tried to resist his advances, has taken up Art classes to help control his temper as he serves time behind bars.

Former Wigan striker King spends an hour each morning painting with watercolours.

“Marlon says it calms him down. He gets so pent up and aggressive – he just flips,” News of the World quoted a prison source, as saying.

“Every morning after his exercises and breakfast, he goes down to the art room. He started off doing bits of fruit and last week he painted a model car.

“The other inmates find it hilarious but he says he likes the peace and tranquillity of it down there,” The source added.

King was persuaded to take up the hobby by staff at HMP Wayland, Norfolk, where he is serving an 18-month sentence. (ANI)

Naomi Campbell takes temper-taming lessons from Nelson Mandela

New York, March 22 (ANI): Naomi Campbell has Nelson Mandela to thank for helping her tame her infamous temper.

The catwalk queen, who was recently accused of assaulting her driver in New York, revealed she has been taking pointers from the Nobel Peace Prize winner.

“I don”t know why he reached out to me or what he sees in me,” the New York Post quoted her as telling the Daily Mail newspaper.

“Every time I”ve made a mistake he”s told me to keep my head up and keep going,” she added.

The driver who claimed the supermodel attacked him later apologised to the star, saying it was a misunderstanding that was “blown out of proportion.” (ANI)

Trickett calls for calm on Kukla

Former sprint queen Libby Trickett has tried to temper the hype surrounding Yolane Kukla by saying she needs to slash her times to be successful at international level.

Trickett’s comments followed the 14-year-old Kukla (25.08 seconds) completing her arrival as the nation’s number one sprinter by bursting out of the blocks to win the 50m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games trials in Sydney.

It was Kukla’s second title of the week and she could so easily have had a third after touching the wall first in the 100m freestyle before being disqualified for a false start.

Trickett said now was not the time to put over-the-top expectations on the youngster.

“Not to at all take down her performance tonight (but) 25.08 is not a fast time,” Trickett told AAP.

“I won that at trials in 2003 that was the time I went seven years ago.

“Without taking away from her performance – it is wonderful – but for her to be internationally successful she needs to be faster and that’s the bottom line.

“She knows that and her coach knows that but this is a wonderful stepping stone towards that.”

Trickett said Kukla had plenty to improve on.

“She has got potential, she has won two national titles and she has the ability to withstand pressure but again she needs some experience internationally,” Trickett said.

Kukla’s ability to soak up pressure is undeniable. She was clearly the fastest off the blocks on Saturday night just two evenings after breaking early in the 100m freestyle.

“I lost quite a bit of confidence when I broke the other night and I practised my starts at warm-up this morning and I got my confidence back,” she said.

Then she reminded all of her tender age, she is after all sharing a unit with her mum this week.

“I keep on telling mum every time I wake up in the morning that I am going (to the Commonwealth Games),” Kukla said.

“But it is going to be really different as I am going with the national team and they are all so much older then me.

“I don’t really know what to expect but it is going to be really different in Delhi compared to this meet.”

Her feats are a bit better than her times initially suggest as she is competing in the post-supersuit era.

Alice Mills (25.13) and Cate Campbell (25.15) followed Kukla home in the one-lap event and picked up swims in Delhi in the process.

Lauterstein strikes back

Andrew Lauterstein (51.79) earlier took out all his anger from his sub-par meet in the 100m butterfly final, destroying his rivals in the two-lap event.

He felt it was time for him to fire up after finishing sixth in the 100m freestyle final on Friday night.

“I did not want to leave anything behind because I heard that Eamon’s (Sullivan) lactate (level) last night was 19.4 which was pretty high and mine was 8.6,” he said.

“So I thought maybe I need to pull my finger out and actually try and race this and not just think I am racing this with really good technique.”

Leisel Jones (1:05.79) erased any lingering doubts about her decision to skip last year’s world championships by putting up a world-class time in her 100m breaststroke victory.

Before the start of this evening’s program, there was a minute’s silence in memory of former Epping swim club member Saxon Bird.

The 19-year-old died in rough conditions at the surf lifesaving championships on the Gold Coast on Friday.

South African officials withhold findings of Caster Semenya’s gender test

London, Sep. 19 (ANI): Even before South African star athlete Caster Semenya’s gender was questioned at the World Championships in Berlin, Athletics South Africa (ASA) had found out and withheld the fact that she had internal testes, an e-mail exchange has revealed.

According to the e-mail exchanges published in the Mail and Guardian newspaper, ASA officials were aware of the findings of a Pretoria clinic that Semenya had internal testes and produced abnormal amounts of testosterone for a woman, Times Online reports.

It was ASA’s chief medical officer and team doctor, Harold Adams, who had suggested the need carrying out the tests on Semenya, 18, because of her deep voice, muscular body and facial hair, which later became a subject of controversy in Berlin.

Another email exchange shows that Adams later suggested that the results to be kept confidential while the South African team was in Berlin.

“Thinking about the current confidential matter, I would suggest we make the following decisions. 1. We get a gynae opinion and take it to Berlin. 2. We do nothing and I will handle these issues if they come up in Berlin,” the report quoted from Dr Adams’ email to ASA President Leonard Chuene and General Manager Molatelo Malehopo, as saying.

Following the IAAF establishing that Semenya was a hermaphrodite, South African officials not only angrily denounced it, but also denied carrying out their own tests.

Taking matters a step further, South African Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile lost his temper at a press conference and threatened to start a “third world war” if Semenya was banned from international competition because of her gender.

Earlier, Semenya’s ex-coach Wilfred Daniels had said the ASA had duped Semenya into thinking the gender test carried out on her were routine drug tests. (ANI)

Self-harming Megan Fox wasn’t a ‘cutter’ in young age

London, September 18 (ANI): ‘Transformers’ star Megan Fox has confessed that she often harmed herself in young age.

The 23-year-old star, however, says that she never went to the extremes of harming herself with a cutter.

“Girls go through different phases when they’re growing up, when they’re miserable, and do different things, whether it’s an eating disorder or they dabble in cutting,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I don’t want to elaborate. I would never call myself a cutter,” she added.

Posing on the front of Rolling Stone in a revealing see-through bodysuit, Fox has revealed that her temper is ridiculously bad.

She has even admitted threatening to murder her boyfriend Brian Austin Green in a fit of anger. (ANI)

Megan Fox’s ‘ridiculously bad’ temper

New York, September 17 (ANI): Megan Fox, 23, has revealed how she once threatened to kill her on-off boyfriend Brian Austin Green in a fit of anger.

“My temper is ridiculously bad,” the New York Post quoted her as having told Rolling Stone magazine for its October issue.

“I’ve had to say to Brian, ‘You have to go and stop talking to me, because I’m going to kill you. I’m going to stab you with something, please leave.’

“I’d never own a gun for that reason. I wouldn’t shoot to kill. But I would shoot him in the leg, for sure,” she added. (ANI)

US footballer claims being Farrah Fawcett’s first and last love

Melbourne, Aug 31 (ANI): A former US footballer claims that he was the first and last love of late actress Farrah Fawcett.

Greg Lott, who says he first met Fawcett in the 60s, also claims that actor Ryan O’Neal’s heart-wrenching return to her side and his support during her dying days was nothing more than an act for the camera.

According to The Mail, Lott dismissed the image of Fawcett and O’Neal’s tragic rapprochement as nothing but Hollywood fantasy, and says that for the last 11 years of her life, she was involved in a very private romance with him.

“We were blind, crazy, in love,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“Farrah was my best friend and my inspiration.

“We fell in love with each other all those years ago and we never really stopped loving each other. Our lives took us in very different directions but, in the end, her heart always came home to me and Texas,” he said.

Lott also claimed that O’Neal froze him out of Fawcett’s life against her will, and that she referred to O’Neal as the “Fat F*** from the beach”.

O’Neal’s spokesman has dismissed Lott’s claims as “categorically false”, but the actor’s son Griffin has stated otherwise.

“I have to thank Greg Lott for one thing: For loving Farrah the way she deserved to be loved. Ryan was just there for the acclaim,” he said.

Lott revealed the last time he spoke to Fawcett was a couple of months before she passed away.

“I last spoke to Farrah late on the night of April 9 – two-and-a-half months before she died. She was preparing to come home from a bout of treatment at St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica,” he said.

“She told me: ‘I’m coming home tomorrow. I love you and I will call you’,” he revealed.

When he did not hear from her, Lott flew to California in desperation, to her home in LA, but he claims O’Neal refused him entry.

“I never got to say goodbye to Farrah. Ryan shut me out of her life,” he said.

Lott, who dated Fawcett from when they were students at Texas University until 1970, got his second chance when her romance with O’Neal came unstuck in 1996 thanks to his volatile temper and infidelity.

“She called and we arranged to meet in Texas,” Lott said.

“She was doing a fundraiser for battered women and invited me to the event at a hotel. She walked into the room and the electricity was there between us,” he recalled.

Fawcett then invited him to visit her at her home in Bel Air, Los Angeles.

“She flew me out to Los Angeles and we fell into each other’s arms,” he said.

“Farrah was always a very sensual woman. She never wore make-up at home and would shop at cheap stores like Walmart for her sweatpants. She had no airs and graces. That’s what I loved about her. She looked a million dollars without doing anything.

“I would look at her sleeping in the early morning and she looked like an angel. I thought I was the luckiest man in the world. She told me, ‘I’ve had the Hollywood men but you’re a real man. You get me.

“She loved to cook and would make me Texan dishes like fried chicken. We didn’t go out much. We’d stay home and watch movies and make love,” he added. (ANI)

Solar eclipse popularises astro-tourism in India

New Delhi, July 9 (ANI): After space tourism, it is astro-tourism that is catching up people’s fancy, courtesy the ensuing total solar eclipse.

Air charter and tourist operators in India are receiving an overwhelming response for chartered flights to view total solar eclipse of longest duration in 21st century.

All set to take place on July 22, the eclipse holds special interest for scientists and general public as its path of totality passes through thickly populated western, central, eastern and northeastern regions of India.

Cox and Kings, a travel agency claims that both amateur astronomers and others are booking for the Boeing-737 that they have hired for the two-hour journey from Delhi to Gaya in Bihar to watch the rare total solar eclipse.

Each ticket is priced at rupees 79,000 (around 1,618 dollars).

“Well, we have got very strong response. The airline that we are flying has 21 seats facing the sun and 21 more window seats, which are facing away from the sun, facing the earth. We call them the ‘sun side seats’ and the ‘earth side seats’. The sun side seats, which will have direct view of the eclipse, cost about 79,000 rupees. We are actually getting very strong response form the amateur astronomy circles in India, from the corporate world and a wide variety of audience,” said Nikhil Pawar, Scientific Officer, Space Technology and Education Private Limited, Mumbai.

On July 22, the moon will totally eclipse the sun after a decade. The next total solar eclipse will take place again only in 2034.

People on board these chartered flights can watch the eclipse for almost 10 times more than those on ground. And, there are reasons attributed to such a phenomenon.

“Theoretically the totality (of the eclipse) can be only 7 minutes 30 seconds. So that is the maximum you can get, if you are stationed at one place and during that period, by chasing the moon shadow they (people in airplanes) increase the time to 74 minutes that means almost ten times than the theoretically maximum possible,” Piyush Pandey, Director, Nehru Planetarium, Mumbai.

Meanwhile, hotel owners in Patna are preparing to welcome the rush of astro-tourist guests expected to halt here.

“The solar eclipse on the 22nd can be seen from Bihar. The tourists will come on the 21st and 12 rooms have been booked for them in our hotel,” said Vinay Pandey, owner Hotel Republic, Patna.

In India, the eclipse will commence soon after sunrise.

Surat and Vadodra in Gujarat, Indore and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh apart from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Patna in Bihar are stated to be the ideal locations for good views of the total solar eclipse.

It provides a rare opportunity to view and study this grand spectacle of nature. The partial phase of the eclipse will be visible throughout the country.

Astro-tourism comes as a surprise in a country where people for ages have been considering eclipses especially solar eclipses as bad omen.

The belief that the sun is at the mercy of two evil planets, Rahu and Ketu causing the eclipse, still prevails among a large section of people despite propagation of scientific temper among the masses. (ANI)

Italians named ‘Europe’s worst drivers’

London, June 29 (ANI): For British travellers, Italians fare the worst when it comes to driving, according to a survey.

In the poll by TripAdvisor, over 30 percent of the 819 British travellers claimed that contending with the locals’ driving style was the biggest challenge of motoring abroad.lmost 35 percent of survey participants were nervous of driving abroad, while 14 percent said that they never brushed up on local driving regulations.

It was also found that 45 percent had misread a map and got lost, 38 percent had argued with their partner while at the wheel, and 11 percent had lost their temper with other drivers while on foreign roads.

Italians were considered the worst drivers in Europe, while French were the second-worst behind the wheels.

At the third spot were Greeks, followed by motorists in Turkey, Spain and Portugal.

Those polled put British drivers as seventh worst.

“Hitting the open road can be one of the most rewarding and cost-effective ways of exploring a new destination, but some travellers find the notion of a relaxing road trip vanishes as soon as they encounter unfamiliar driving laws and styles,” the Daily Express quoted TripAdvisor spokesman Luke Fredberg as saying. Angry Susan Boyle rants four-letter words after strangers ‘wind her up’

London, May 28 (ANI): Britain’s Got Talent finalist Susan Boyle flared up before hundreds of hotel guests after two strangers set out to “wind her up”.

The singing sensation was said to have blew her temper with two four-letter outbursts in a day while staying at the Wembley Plaza Hotel in North London.

Cops were involved after the 48-year-old lost her cool in the lobby after being approached by two strangers, who a BGT spokesman said had been “trying to wind her up”.

“How f***ing dare you! You can’t f***ing talk to me like that,” the Sun quoted her as being heard.

And when one of two officers stationed at the hotel went up and asked: “Is there a problem?”

Susan raged: “Of course there’s a f***ing problem.”

The amateur singer then reportedly stormed out followed by her family, production staff and the cops, who later spoke to her for some time.

One officer allegedly said: “You are in the public eye, you must learn to expect this sort of thing.”

And a pal of Susan’s told her: “You can’t act like this.”

One onlooker added: “It took her a long time to calm down from whatever upset her. She was breathing heavily and in a terrible rage.

“The pressure is obviously getting to Susan. Perhaps all the fame is too much for her.”

Susan came one step closer to winning the title after reaching the finals with her stunning version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats song Memory.

A staggering 13.6million viewers had tuned into ITV1 to watch the songbird perform in the recent semi-finals while more than a million visited YouTube to see her latest performance.

The star since her jaw dropping audition has won fans all over the globe, including US President Barack Obama and Hollywood couple Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. (ANI)

In an interview with Total Politics, she revealed him to be a “very traditional” man, reports the Telegraph.

Blair also revealed that she was glad she did not have to stand beside France’s First Lady Carla Bruni at political functions, but she also felt herself to be “probably” appreciated more by the public than when her husband was in office.

Along with her revelations, she also advised Samantha Cameron, wife of Conservative Party leader David Cameron, that if her husband succeeds Brown, to “keep the family together”. (ANI)

Dinara Safina set to enjoy life at the top

Stuttgart – The pink birthday cake came at the right time as Dinara Safina likes to award herself with some unhealthy food for good things she has achieved.

Turning 23 on Monday, the Russian said that “I like to give something to myself” and to “celebrate every time when the opportunity is there.”

The birthday was one occasion, but Safina is also playing her first tennis tournament this week at the Porsche Grand Prix since taking the world number one ranking right days ago.

“It feels very good,” she said. “Staying number one is a challenge. But I want to enjoy the challenge.”

Safina was hailed as a big talent but spent a long time in the shadow of her brother Marat Safin who held the men’s top spot in 2000.

Safina failed to show her full potential, falling victim to her temper and poor tactics.

The man who changed all that to the better his Zeljko Krajan, a former Croatian player who became her coach in late 2007.

“I was lucky to find the person who opened my mind. He took me from number 17 to number one,” said Safina. “Before, I had the shots but didn’t use them as weapons.”

The breakthrough came 12 months ago in Berlin when Safina beat then number one Justin Henin and American Serena Williams en route to the title.

“Berlin changed everything,” said Safina, who went on to win three more titles in 2008 and also was a finalist at the French Open and Beijing Olympics.

Safina reached another big final at the Australian Open in January but was crushed there by Williams in a match which was also for the top ranking.

She failed again at several more occasions to earn the number one, but failed again “because I got too tight and suffered in matches. It was only about winning, I wasn’t as relaxed.”

The top spot finally came last week and the top seeded Safina must now prove her class in Stuttgart where she could meet Serbian Jelena Jankovic, another former number one and the defending champion, in the semi-finals.

Safina does also not mind all the obligations which come with the top spot: “It will be new but this is what I wanted. I wanted to be famous.”

The Porsche Grand Prix is the first official WTA clay court tournament held indoors as the buildup in Europe for the French Open starts in earnest.

Safina, who opens on Tuesday or Wednesday against Italy’s Sara Errani, said she feels comfortable as she has already played several Fed Cup ties indoors on the dirt.

But she is already looking beyond Stuttgart, well aware that she will only be fully recognized as a top act with a Grand Slam title.

“My mission is nit finished yet. I want to win a Grand Slam. I have to work hard but I think I can do it. I have been in finals,” Safina said. (dpa)

Jailed Jack Tweed’s family ‘visits Jade Goody’s grave on his behalf’

London, April 20 (ANI): Jailed Jack Tweed’s mother and sister have reportedly paid an emotional visit to his late wife Jade Goody’s final resting place on his behalf.

Mary Tweed and her daughter Laura were said to have read tributes to the reality TV star as they sat at the churchyard near Jade’s home in Essex.

The duo had apparently made a promise to Jack, who had lovingly cared for his cancer-stricken wife till she passed away on March 22, that they would visit Jade’s grave while he was locked up in prison, reports the Sun.

The grieving widower purportedly went to the burial site every day until he was jailed for 12 weeks for attacking a taxi driver after losing his drunken temper over the fare.

Pals of the 21-year-old had previously feared that his recurrent sleepless nights and growing bizarre behaviour might just land him with a breakdown. (ANI)

‘Twiglet’ Jack Tweed ‘takes to weight training’ in jail

London, April 17 (ANI): Jack Tweed has reportedly been pumping iron after his fellow inmates in Chelmsford Prison dubbed him The Twiglet.

The skinny 21-year-old had been found guilty of attacking a taxi driver after losing his drunken temper over the fare and had been subsequently sentenced to 12 weeks in jail.

Jade Goody’s grieving widower had been allegedly targeted by his inmates last time he spent a week in jail in 2008 at the start of a five-month term for attacking a 16-year-old with a golf club.

He was recently reported to have been put in a single cell along with inmates on suicide watch to protect him from being targeted by hardened cons.

And now, Tweed is purportedly lifting weights to toughen up against potential threats.

“Jack’s new nickname is The Twiglet, or Twiglet Tweed,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“A lot of the inmates train in case the worst happens and they have to defend themselves, so he has asked one of the bigger guys if he will help him out in the gym,” the source added.

The source continued: “He’s always been skinny but that never bothered him until he went to Chelmsford the first time. Jack was a scared little boy, but now he’s determined to shed his puny image.” (ANI)

Jack Tweed kept in ‘safe suicide wing’ to avoid trouble with bullies

London, April 16 (ANI): Jailed Jack Tweed has been put in a single cell along with inmates on suicide watch to shield him from other prisoners looking to bully him, according to sources.

Jade Goody’s grieving widower had been found guilty of attacking a taxi driver after losing his drunken temper over the fare and had been subsequently sentenced to 12 weeks in jail.

The 21-year-old had been allegedly targeted by his inmates last time he spent a week in jail in 2008 at the start of a five-month term for attacking a 16-year-old with a golf club.

Fearing a repeat incident, Chelmsford Prison chiefs were said to have locked Tweed in the prison’s “safest” area, the healthcare wing.

“Jack was having nightmares about returning as he was picked on so badly last time because of his celebrity status,” the Sun quoted a jail source as saying.

“There are genuine concerns that he could be targeted, it’s the sort of thing the tough guys would brag about to their mates.

“The last thing the governor wants is for someone like Jack with a high media profile to take a shoeing. They’d rather give him the soft soap treatment than risk bad headlines,” the source added.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “We cannot comment on individual prisoners. Those who are deemed vulnerable during their period in custody will be managed accordingly.

“Any prisoner who feels their safety is compromised can apply to be separated from the general prison population.” (ANI)
