Larry King’s wife attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription drugs

London, June 11 (ANI): Talk show host Larry King’s wife has been revealed to have attempted suicide late last month by overdosing on prescription drugs as she battled depression.

According to TMZ.com, an officer with the Provo, Utah police reported entering Shawn King’s residence on May 2, going to a bedroom where paramedics were treating her and seeing “multiple pill bottles, all of which were empty on the bed”.

The police report noted “scriptures, a purse, other various books” and a letter which appeared to be a note left by the victim.

“It is unknown whose writing this letter was in, however wording on the letter led me to believe that (King) had intentionally taken the quantity of pills,” the Telegraph quoted the officer as writing in the report, which is labelled “attempted suicide”.

The report said labels on the bottles indicated multiple drugs including Ambien, Klonopin and Clonazepam, and many of them were empty.

One witness told police that Shawn King “is always depressed, but she had not mentioned anything that she would want to hurt herself or take her own life”. (ANI)

Repeated exposure to dental X-rays ups thyroid cancer risk

London, June 4 (ANI): Repeated exposure to dental X-rays increases thyroid cancer risk, a new study has revealed.

Analysing 313 cancer patients, scientists from Brighton, Cambridge and Kuwait found the chances of developing cancer rose with increasing numbers of dental X-rays.

“The public health and clinical implications of these findings are particularly relevant in the light of increases in the incidence of thyroid cancer in many countries over the past 30 years,” the Telegraph quoted Dr Anjum Memon, of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, as saying.

However, Dr Memon was quick to add that the increasing use of sensitive diagnostic techniques does not necessarily account for the entire increase and that other causes warrant investigation. (ANI)

Now, ”printer” that creates made-to-measure human organs

London, June 4 (ANI): Patients needing transplants would soon ask doctors to ”print” new organs for them, it has been claimed.

The California-based regenerative medicine company Organovo has already unveiled a prototype machine capable of growing new arteries.

Company bosses believe the technology could be used to create new organs.

The machine is based on 3D laser printing technology used to make new machine parts for industry.

But instead of combining layers of plastic and metal, the “bioprinter” puts together living tissue.

Two laser-based printing heads are used to place living cells onto thin sheets of gel with microscopic precision.

Thereafter, multiple layers are laid on top of each other in a specially designed “scaffold” and the cells begin to fuse together.

“Ultimately the idea would be for surgeons to have tissue on demand for various uses,” the Telegraph quoted Organovo”s chief executive Keith Murphy, as saying.

Murphy added: “The best way to do that is get a number of bio-printers into the hands of researchers and give them the ability to make three dimensional tissues on demand.” (ANI)

Drink Earl Grey, employ a cleaner, say ””””supper”””” instead of ””””dinner”””” to be posh!

London, June 04 (ANI): A new poll suggests employing a cleaner, saying ””””supper”””” instead of ””””dinner”””” and sipping on Earl Grey tea can help you be tagged as posh.

The survey conducted by Opinium Research also found that one fourth of the Brits think spending more than 10 pounds on a bottle of wine is a high-end thing to do.

Other ways of highlighting your class included telling others what school you went to while in your 30s.

The poll further found that a third of Britons considered themselves working class, reports the Telegraph.

Thirty percent said they were middle class. While 5 percent said social classes did not exist. (ANI)

Mobile phone with ringtone as loud as speeding train wins over the elderly

London, June 4 (ANI): A mobile phone with a ringtone as loud as a pneumatic drill or speeding train is proving a hit among the elderly.

The Geemarc Clearsound CL8200,which has a top volume of 1,000 decibels, has been designed for the millions of elderly people who find modern mobile phones far too complex as well as far too quiet.

It is understood to be the loudest mobile phone on the market.

The phone, which has been manufactured by the British Company in Hertfordshire, has been on sale for a few months at specialist websites including the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, which says it has sold thousands.

Hearingdirect.com, which sells discounted hearing aids and other accessories, said that it had seen twice as many visitors to its site since the phone was launched.

“We have found a lot of our customers who are hard of hearing were fed up with the amount of unnecessary technology on other mobile phones and wanted a simple phone they could hear ringing, make calls and receive texts. They were tired of missing calls because they could not hear the ring and fiddling with small buttons. We think it”s going to be a big seller,” the Telegraph quoted Jamie Murray Wells, the chairman of HearingDirect.com, as saying.

As well as the ultra-loud ringtone, the phone also has a loud receiving tone, allowing listeners to hear their caller louder than normal.

This volume is 25 decibels as compared to a standard 8 to 10 decibel standard volume.

A spokesman for Geemarc, which is based in Hertfordshire, said: “There is a real need for a phone that doesn”t look like a disability phone, but which is really simple to use. There are a lot of elderly people frustrated at iPhones, and smart phones which can practically boil a kettle but are very difficult to use if you are hard of hearing or short sighted.”

The mobile phone costs 89.99 pounds, and comes with a pay-as-you-go SIM card, with 5 pounds worth of credit. It is also compatible with any other SIM card. (ANI)

US politician caught plagiarising Obama speech

London, May 26 (IANS) A Republican congressional candidate has been accused of plagiarising US President Barack Obama’s speech on ‘the crossroads of history’.

Vaughn Ward, a former US Marine Corps officer and CIA operative, was running for the Republican congressional nomination in an election held Tuesday in Idaho.

The Telegraph reported Wednesday that Lucas Baumbach, a local party activist, tracked down a YouTube video that showed a strong similarity between Ward’s speech in January and Obama’s address to the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Obama said: ‘We stand on the crossroads of history. We can make the right choices and meet the challenges that face us.’

Ward said: ‘As we stand on the crossroads of history, I know we can make the right choices and meet the challenges that lay before us.’

There were a few more striking similarities between the two speeches.

Ward’s spokesperson, however, said: ‘Folks are getting desperate-they’re saying anything to get Vaughn to go after him. If anyone thinks he’s anything like Obama, they’re dead wrong.’

Wanted: Beer taster for ‘world’s best job’

London, May 20 (ANI): The good-old position of the ale taster is being resurrected by a London market, which calls it the “best job in the world”.

The holder of the voluntary post will have to sample beers from London pubs to “test for quality”.

The job has been reintroduced by Spitalfields Market, which was set up in 1683.

Wellington Market Company, which manages the market, is inviting applications for the post.

“Although the attraction of the role may seem obvious at first, the 21st century version would incorporate many more responsibilities than the original,” the Telegraph quoted company boss Malcolm Ball, as saying.

He added: “Our ale taster would become an ambassador for food and drink in the area.”

According to Ball, the winning candidate would have to have a “sound knowledge of local, regional, national and international beers”, and that “he or she must be passionate about the subject”.

“It must be stated that although the role is voluntary, it obviously carries benefits,” he added. (ANI)

London, May 21(ANI): A British policeman, Gary Heseltine, has won the 2010 Disclosures Award in Washington for his database of UFO sightings in the UK.

The 49-year-old picked up the award for his website, prufospolicedatabase.co.uk, which he launched in 2002. The database includes 330 cases and the witness statements of more than 750 police officers.

“Winning the award was a total surprise, I didn’t know I was going to win until my name was read out,” The Telegraph quoted Heseltine, as saying.

“It’s also a terrific boost for my database as it puts me on an international platform and I have already been offered chances to give lectures in Brazil and Denmark,” he added.

Elucidating his fascination with the unexplained, Heseltine said it began at the age of 15, when he spotted a mysterious bright light while walking his first girlfriend home.

“I was with my first girlfriend heading towards the comprehensive school and suddenly became aware of a large bright light. Suddenly all the electricity on the housing estate we could see ahead cut out,” Heseltine said.

“We were terrified at the time, but afterwards I decided to investigate and discovered that power cuts are extremely common during UFO sightings,” he added. (ANI)

Now, chocolate bar that keeps wrinkles at bay

London, May 21 (ANI): Good news for chocolate lovers: A new kind of chocolate has been created that apparently slows the ageing process and fights wrinkles.

Made by the world”s largest chocolate manufacturer, Acticoa is packed with natural antioxidants, which can protect the skin from damage by harmful free radicals.

Studies have shown that just 20g a day of the chocolate could help prevent wrinkles by hydrating the skin and improving elasticity.

The time-defying bars, drinks and buttons are the brainchild of chocolatiers at Barry Callebaut, whose 7,500 strong workforce in 26 countries make 3- billion-pound worth of chocolate each year, supplying household names like Cadbury and Thorntons.

“Chocolate and health do not seem to fit together but it is a very interesting proposition: if I can eat something I like and it is good for me, that is great. Chocolate is probably at the bottom of the list when you think about making food healthier,” the Telegraph quoted Harry Vriens, of Barry Callebaut, as saying. (ANI)

Rolling Stones documentary is like a ”family scrapbook”: Sir Mick Jagger

London, May 20 (ANI): Sir Mick Jagger has described Rolling Stones documentary as like opening a ‘family scrapbook’.

””It”s like when you look through your family scrapbook in a way, you get your book out or get your computer out and you look at these old pictures,”” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

The 66-year-old continued: ””You get these nice feelings, but then this isn”t actually a family album because you”re making a film or re-releasing a record, so you become another personality and think ”that was a good one, that was rubbish”.

””You have to be professional,”” he added. (ANI)

Sir Mick Jagger calls for marijuana to be legalised on Isle of Man

London, May 20 (ANI): Rolling Stones lead singer Sir Mick Jagger has called for cannabis to be legalised on the Isle of Man to gauge whether it prevents drug-related violence.

In an interview on American television, the 66 year-old British rock star suggested a trial scheme should be conducted on the channel island ‘to see what happens’.

The singer, who was convicted of possessing narcotics in the 1960s, urged officials to legalise cannabis only on the island, and only for a limited time, to test whether such a ban would work.

“The whole question of legalising drugs is fraught,” the Telegraph quoted him as telling the Larry King Live show on CNN.

“You usually try these things out in very small places. You know, like you try a new product out in a small kind of society or an island somewhere.

“In England they always try out new mobile phones in the Isle of Man. They”ve got a captive society. So I said, you should try – you should try the legalisation of all drugs on the Isle of Man and see what happens,” he added. (ANI)

ATM inventor John Shepherd-Barron, 84, dies after short illness

London, May 20(ANI): John Shepherd-Barron, the Scotsman credited with inventing the world’s first automatic teller machine, now known as ATMs, has died after a short illness. He was 84.

Shepherd-Barron died in Scotland’s Raigmore Hospital on Saturday.

He had come up with the concept of a self-service cash dispenser in 1965 while lying in a bath after getting to his bank too late to withdraw money.

The businessman, who worked for the printing firm De La Rue Instruments at the time, said he was inspired by chocolate vending machines and put the idea to the head of Barclays Bank “over a pink gin”, The Telegraph reported.

The first ATM was installed at a Barclays’ branch in London in 1967.

Shepherd-Barron did not patent his system and did not make any money from his invention, but was made an OBE in 2005 for his services to banking. (ANI)

Over 50 pct Facebook users could delete accounts over privacy worries

London, May 20 (ANI): A security firm has suggested that more than half of Facebook users are considering deleting their profile from the site because of privacy concerns.

According to Sophos, a computer security organisation, concerns about privacy are running so high that 60 percent of the 1,588 Facebook users questioned said they were considering deleting their accounts.

A further 16 percent said they had already stopped using Facebook because they felt they had inadequate control over their data, while a quarter said that they would not be quitting the social networking site, which has almost 500 million users worldwide.

Facebook has attracted criticism in recent weeks for the perceived complexity of its privacy settings, and the fact that users have to opt-out of sharing some of their information with third parties, rather than give explicit consent by opting in.

Although Facebook is expected to look again at its privacy policy in the coming days, it may not be enough to halt an online campaign for a mass Facebook “suicide” on May 31, with thousands of users encouraged to delete their accounts.

“This poll shows that the majority of users are fed up with the lack of control that Facebook gives users over their data,” the Telegraph quoted Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, as saying.

“Most still don”t know how to set their Facebook privacy options safely, finding the whole system confusing.

“What”s needed is a fundamental shift towards asking users to ”opt-in” to sharing information, rather than to ”opt-out”.

“A mass exodus from Facebook seems unlikely, but users are clearly getting more interested in knowing precisely who can view their data.

“People use Facebook to share private information and are unlikely to want their holiday snaps or new mobile number accidentally popping up all over the Internet,” he added. (ANI)

”Maybe later” is the phrase most hectic parents use to delay kids’ play request

London, May 20 (ANI): The phrase that today’s hectic parents use most often in response to their kids’ request to play with them is: “Maybe later”, revealed a new study.

Researchers found that, despite children being parents” ”main priority”, 80 per cent admit they don”t devote enough time to them.

In fact, the report found working parents spend less than an hour a day giving their kids one-to-one attention – with the average child getting just 36 minutes with their mother or father.

Children”s responses to the survey painted a similar picture, claiming parents are too preoccupied with working, tidying and checking emails to address their needs.

The study of 3,000 working parents and their children by car insurance provider Admiral found that almost eight out of ten children said they were fed up of being parked in front of the television instead of being entertained.

The trend also showed adults are parenting ”remotely” from their laptops or kitchen sink and continually promising their attention ”later”.

””The generation of ”Maybe Later” kids shows a worrying trend of parents not spending as much time as they should with their children,” the Telegraph quoted James Carnduff of Admiral, which conducted the research as part of its Family Journeys campaign, as saying.

””Parents admit their children aren”t getting enough of their attention, and children are also feeling the impact of this, desperate for their parents to spend more time with them.

””We live in ever busier times with many parents taking work home with them once they leave the office, but it seems this is having a negative effect on the relationship they have with their children.

””Parents need to remember that playing with your kids is a great way to relieve stress and forget about work.

””The responses from the children we asked show that parents can”t get away with simply sticking their children in front of the TV as that”s simply no replacement for quality time,” he added.

The research also found on top of a normal full time working week, busy parents log onto their emails as soon as they get home from work at least four nights a week.

And at least one of the two parents misses dinner twice a week due to working late.

When at home, 70 per cent of mums and dads admit they spend much of their spare time cooking and cleaning rather than playing with their children.

And 56 per cent often find themselves promising to play with their children after they have finished a bit of work, checked their emails or completed household chores.

But kids are fed up with being treated like second best.

Two thirds said mum and dad are always saying they”ll help with homework or play ”later”.

Six in ten children said they wished their parents worked less and 55 per cent wished they would leave the cleaning until after they went to bed.

Sixty eight per cent said they would like it if their parents had more time to play with them.

””Trying to balance work and home life can be difficult in modern society, but simple things like going on trips as a family can be easy and fun, and don”t need to cost a lot of money,” said Carnduff.

””We”re encouraging families to take more trips out together; these family memories are the things our kids remember from their childhood.

””Saying ”maybe later” to children needs to become a thing of the past for parents, as the results of our survey show that the nation”s children are well and truly fed up,” he added. (ANI)
