Woods’ doctor charged for administering illegal drugs

London, May 19 (ANI): Controversial Canadian doctor Anthony Galea, who is known to have treated ace golfer Tiger Woods, has been charged for administering illegal drugs, including human growth hormone.

The criminal complaint filed in Buffalo, New York, has not identified any athlete, and charges are related only to one of Galea’s NFL clients. The doctor has worked with several other leading sports figures, including Woods.

Toronto based Galea was charged with smuggling, conspiring to lie to federal officials, unlawful distribution of growth hormone, conspiracy to defraud, and introduction of the unapproved drug Actovegin into interstate commerce, The Telegraph reports.

Woods has claimed that the only treatments he received in five meetings with Galea were for blood spinning, where a person’s own blood is placed in a centrifuge and reinserted into the body, purportedly with greater healing properties.

Hank Haney, Woods’ former swing coach, said last weekend that he was at four of those five meetings with Galea and noted that nothing but what was taken from Woods body went back into it.

Woods has been repeatedly questioned about his links to Galea and has vehemently denied taking any illegal or banned drugs.

Prior to the Quail Hollow Championship, his second comeback event since his treatment for sex addiction, Woods disclosed that one of his physical therapists had recommended that he saw Galea.

“A lot of athletes have worked with him. Look at the list: it’s a who’s who,” Woods had said. (ANI)

Button accuses Massa of screwing his qualifying at Monaco

London, May 16 (ANI): Formula one champion Jenson Button has accused Ferrari’s driver Felipe Massa of screwing his qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, where as Michael Schumacher complained that he was impeded by his own Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg.

Button was the chief victim, McLaren’s championship leader hitting out after he was impeded by Massa going into the final corner, The Telegraph reports.

He ended the session eighth fastest, three places behind his team mate Lewis Hamilton, and afterwards called for the stewards to intervene.

“It’s disappointing because he screwed that lap of mine and also the next one because I had to drop back. I don’t know what he was thinking,” Button said.

Massa claimed in his defence that he, too, had been held up by Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg.

Mercedes, the last of the ‘big four’ teams, also had a frustrating day.

Rosberg and Schumacher claimed sixth and seventh on the grid respectively, but the former felt he could and should have been on pole, The Telegraph reports. (ANI)

Burglars threatened to take Gerrard’s kids away

London, May 15 (ANI): Burglars warned the wife of England footballer Steven Gerrard that they would take her kids in a terrifying raid on their home.

The Liverpool Crown Court was told that Alex Curran confronted the masked gang, who demanded she hand over jewellery and the contents of a safe.

Details of the ordeal emerged after Martin Wilson, 22, changed his plea and admitted the burglary following legal arguments, The Telegraph reports.

Graham Pickavance, for the prosecution, told the court the robbery took place in December 2007 as the Reds captain led his team to victory in a Champions League game against Marseille.

Curran, 27, had remained at the home in Formby, Merseyside, with their two children, Lilly-Ella and Lexie, now aged six and four, and their nanny Lyndsey Johnston.

Pickavance described the mansion as secured by high walls, a fence and electronically controlled gates, The Telegraph reports.

Police caught up with Wilson by analysing the use of his mobile phone, the court heard.

The defendant is serving six years and eight months in jail after admitting conspiracy to burgle at Liverpool Crown Court last June, The Telegraph reports. (ANI)

Rooney voted best footballer by Writers’ Association

London, May 14 (ANI): Manchester United ace striker Wayne Rooney won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and said that he wants to become a top-class manager.

Rooney got record percentage of votes from journalists with just over 81 percent of votes cast, finishing ahead of Chelsea forward Didier Drogba and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez to win the prestigious award.

Rooney received his award at the FWA’s gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on Thursday evening, The Telegraph reports.

Rooney, who scored 34 goals in all competitions this term, admitted it was a privilege to follow the likes of Bobby Moore and Sir Bobby Charlton to be named Footballer of the Year, and revealed he intended to stay involved in the game for many years to come.

“I would like to (step into management). I joined Everton when I was nine years old and football has been a massive part of my life. When you do stop playing, I want to be involved in football,” Rooney said.

“I started doing my coaching badges this year, and probably did not do as many classes as I would have liked. Hopefully I can continue them next year. I love football and enjoy football – I can’t see myself running a restaurant, I want to be in football,” he said.

“But now I am only 24. Hopefully I can progress and the best years are still ahead of me. I am always learning every day, and take things in from all my teammates. As a player you are never the finished article. I want to keep learning and getting better.”

Rooney’s immediate plans are to focus on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. (ANI)

Brit PM Brown resigns in a dramatic move

London, May 11 (ANI): British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in a dramatic move, has announced that he will step down as leader of the Labour Party in order to pave the way for talks with the Liberal Democrats to facilitate formation of the next government.

The announcement made by Brown is likely to derail an imminent deal between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, as the latter had reportedly made leadership change a condition for them to work with the Labour Party.

Brown seized on David Cameron’s failure to secure a pact with Nick Clegg by opening formal talks to agree to a so-called coalition of losers, The Telegraph reports.

Brown in a surprise move offered to oversee talks between the two parties before stepping down by the time of the Labour conference in September, when a new leader would be chosen by party members.

In a statement, Brown said if it was in “national interest” for Labour and Liberal Democrats to form a coalition government that would enjoy a majority in a hung Parliament, he had “no desire to stay on longer than needed”.

“”We have a parliamentary system, not a presidential system, in this country. As I said on Friday, with no party able to command a parliamentary majority arising from the General Election, my constitutional duty as Prime Minister is to ensure government continues while parties explore options for forming a new administration with majority support in the House of Commons.”

“As we know, the Liberal Democrats felt they should first talk to the Conservative Party. Clegg has just informed me that, while he intends to continue his dialogue that he has begun with the Conservatives, he now wishes also to take forward formal discussions with the Labour Party,” The Telegraph quoted Brown, as saying.

If the Labour Party accepts Brown’s proposal that would mean he would remain at Downing Street for another five months.

The leadership campaign, which is likely to be contested by David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, his brother Ed, the Climate Change Secretary, and Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, and others, will only begin after any talks are concluded.

The paper reports that on Monday night senior Conservatives accused the Lib Dem leader of “treachery” after it emerged that Clegg had changed the basis of a deal with Cameron just minutes before Brown made his statement. (ANI)

Lib-Dems, Tories may agree on economic deal to reassure markets

London, May 10 (ANI): In what could be a decisive factor leading to the formation of a coalition in the House of Commons, Nick Clegg and David Cameron are close to agreeing to an economic deal.

This is especially significant, since British markets have registered fluctuations with the pound depreciating after it came to light that Britain was heading for a hung parliament.

The move will allay investors fears about the market that has already faced rough weather following the crisis in Greece.

Tory leader William Hague, explained how the basis of a deal would be rooted in an economic agreement, The Telegraph reports.

“We are agreed that a central part of any agreement that we make will be economic stability and a reduction of the budget deficit, the paper quoted him as saying.

He added that “political reform, economic issues and the reduction of the deficit, banking reform, civil liberties, environmental issues” has also been discussed.

Interestingly, Nick Clegg met Gordon Brown for a meeting to work out a new deal with the Labour Party while his negotiators were immersed in talks with Tory party negotiators in a neighbouring building.

Meanwhile, Labour Party top-brass are urging Brown to abdicate his position in order for an alliance with the Lib-Dems to come through.

Brown, however, is extremely reluctant to give up the Prime Ministership, he is hastily trying to stitch together a shaky coalition with minority parties instead. This inspite of his own party members coaxing him to step down with dignity.

A Lib Dem- Lab deal seems unlikely in the current scenario.

Lord Ashdown, the former Lib Dem leader and close ally of Clegg, said of Brown: “Amongst his personal qualities is not one that makes him an easy or very able leader of a collegiate-style government.” (ANI)

US has over 5000 existing nuclear war-heads

London, May 4 (ANI): The size of the United States’ nuclear warheads is estimated to be 5113, the Pentagon has disclosed, but according to the Federation of American Scientists an estimated 4,600 have been retired or dismantled.

According to The Telegraph, US and Russia together account for over 95 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons.

Setting a precedent, the US has decided to reveal the size of its nuclear stockpile in order to persuade other nuclear empowered countries to do the same.

Nuclear non-proliferation has been one of the key objectives of the Obama administration. Washington’s move to reveal the size of its nuclear arsenal assumes strategic significance in the backdrop of the forthcoming Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review conference to be held in New York this month.

There are four nuclear states that are non-signatories of the treaty. According to the Natural Resources Defence Council, India has an estimated 250 warheads, Pakistan 100, North Korea 10 and Israel 80, though the last country has never confessed to possessing any weapons.

The Pentagon said 5113 warheads were either operationally deployed, kept in active reserve or held in inactive storage. On a fact sheet detailing numbers that had been classified for decades, it said that the arsenal has been reduced by 84 percent from its maximum level of 31225 warheads at the end of 1967, The Telegraph reports.

“We think it is in our national security interests to be as transparent as we can be about the nuclear programme of the United States. We think it builds confidence, we think it brings more people to an understanding of what President Obama is trying to do,” said Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State.

Ferrer ends Murray’s good run at Rome Masters

London, Apr 30 (ANI): British tennis ace Andy Murray’s hopes of an extended run at the Rome Masters where dashed by David Ferrer who defeated him in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the third-round.

Murray was satisfied with his performance in the second round but was unable to break down the stout defences of the world No 17, who has now won more matches than anyone else on the circuit in 2010.

Ferrer has also recorded more victories on clay than anyone else and he notched up another here to prevent Murray regaining the world No.4 ranking from Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro, The Telegraph reports.

“I played well today. I had a lot of 0-30 games on his serve and the only disappointing thing was that I couldn’t take advantage. But the way I was striking the ball was way, way better than in my last two matches and if I keep playing like that I will start going deep in tournaments again soon,” Murray said.

One break in each set was enough to give Ferrer victory but his speed around the court made him dominate the match.

Murray hit seven aces but was never able to dominate on serve and the Spaniard continually put him under pressure. (ANI)

Morgan leads England to victory against Proteas in T20 WC warm-up tie

Bridgetown (Barbados), Apr 30(ANI): England batsman Eoin Morgan steered the Three Lions to a five-wicket win against South Africa in their final warm-up game before the Twenty20 World Cup.

Morgan scored 63 from 62 balls, as England recovered from nine for three to chase down the target of 126 with three balls to spare.

The left-hander came to the crease with the team in trouble, as Michael Lumb (four) and Kevin Pietersen (0) had fallen in the first over to Rory Kleinveldt before Craig Kieswetter (five) departed to Morne Morkels.

Morgan also shared a crucial 71 run stand with skipper Paul Collingwood, who scored 22 off 26 balls, to play the supporting role, The Telegraph reports.

Earlier, South Africa chose to bat first, but was restricted to 125 for five by some excellently tight new-ball bowling from Ryan Sidebottom and Tim Bresnan.

The bowling saw Graeme Smith, normally the most robust of players, require 13 deliveries to open his account, while Loots Bosman (10) and Herschelle Gibbs (one) both went cheaply.

J.P. Duminy (30 not out) and Albie Morkel (32 not out) applied some late impetus, as the Proteas hauled their total from 66 for 5 in the 15th over to their eventual score.

England spinner Michael Yardy was again the pick of the bowlers, and finished with two for 25 in his four overs.

Brief Scorecard:

South Africa: 125-5 (J.P. Duminy 30 not out, Albie Morkel 32 not out; Michael Yardy 2-25)
England: 127-5 (Eoin Morgan 63, Paul Collingwood 22; Rory Kleinveldt 2-22)

British woman doctor becomes first and youngest to walk to North Pole

London, Apr.26 (ANI): A British woman doctor has become the first and the youngest to walk 500 miles to the North Pole.

Twenty-seven-year-old Amelia Russell and her boyfriend Dan Darley, 34, walked 500 miles in 58 days from Resolute Bay in Canada in aid of the charity Help for Heroes, The Telegraph reports.

Russell completed the trip despite dislocating her shoulder twice during the expedition and resetting it herself.

The couple dragged two sleds carrying food fuel and equipment weighing around 300kg and without the aid of dogs or kites in temperatures of around -40 degrees.

Speaking after arriving at the North Pole on Sunday she said they had to endure temperatures as low as -50C.

“It””s been an extremely difficult and challenging expedition but there””s a huge sense of satisfaction in having got through it. It””s a had a huge physical and mental impact on both of us.” (ANI)

Rooney bags Professional Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year award

London, Apr 26 (ANI): England’s ace striker Wayne Rooney has been voted player of the year by his peers in the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Rooney, who has scored 34 goals this season, beat off competition from Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and Manchester City forward Carlos Tévez.

“It’s a great feeling to win because it”s voted for by the players. It’s a great honour and I’m really proud,” Rooney, 24, said.

Aston Villa’s James Milner won the young player of the year award.

Rooney has improved his game tremendously at Old Trafford this season after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The 24 year-old was anxious to pay credit to Ferguson’s role in his development and backed the Scot to continue in charge at Old Trafford for many seasons to come, The Telegraph reports.

“Sir Alex has really brought me on as a player since I joined United. His hunger passes through to the players. It’s great to see that he’s pushing 70 and hasn’t changed a bit. I’m sure he’ll be here for a long time yet,” he said. (ANI)

Tevez walks the catwalk to raise funds for cancer

London, Apr 17 (ANI): Manchester City ace Carlos Tevez along with his other teammates did a catwalk to help raise 200,000 pounds for a cancer charity.

Manchester City footballers took part in Fashion Kicks, planned by the club’s goalkeeper, Shay Given and his wife, Jane.

Given’s mother died of cancer when he was five years old, which inspired the footballer to organise the gala event on Tuesday, The Telegraph reports.

Millionaire footballers splashed their cash on a Harley Davidson, bought by Craig Bellamy for 18,000 pounds, and an 8,000 pounds Rolex, bought by Kolo Toure, while Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong bought a 3,250 pounds parka worn by Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

The evening saw the players strolling down the runway at Lancashire County Cricket Club in a fashion show funded by Selfridges.

“This is the fourth Fashion Kicks we have held – we have been doing it now for six years. This is the first one we have held in Manchester and it has taken a year of planning.

“A lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into a night like this but it is all worth it to raise the money,” Given said.

All proceeds from the lavish event are going to Macmillan Cancer Support and local cancer charities, The Telegraph reports. (ANI)

Clarke ‘bouncing back’ after break up with Bingle

Melbourne, Mar 31 (ANI): Australian vice captain Michael Clarke declared today that he is looking for friends to party with in Sydney, giving the first indication of bouncing back from his break up with ex fiancee Lara Bingle.

After winning the test series in New Zealand, Clarke has taken to his Twitter page to tell friends and family of how happy he is to be coming home for Easter.

Clarke mentioned he will be celebrating his birthday in Sydney, which is on April 2, when he will turn 29, the Daily Telegraph reports.

He tweeted: “What’s everyone doing for Easter??? Can’t wait to get back home and see my family and friends.. My first b’day at home for a long time…”

Clarke then put a call-out to his mates to come and help him celebrate by tweeting: “Who is going to come party with me and my friends in Syd tomorrow night?????”

Clarke’s clearly positive, party boy attitude comes as his ex-fiancee Bingle has been spotted moving out of their six million dollar Bondi pad.

Bingle has been quiet on her Twitter account, except to say she has become “bubble wrap Bingle” since she started packing up her things before Clarke returns home. (ANI)

Brit prisoner says seven days’ smoking ban a breach of ‘human rights’

Surrey, Mar 23(ANI): A British prisoner addicted to tobacco is seeking damages under the European human rights convention after he was banned from smoking for swearing at a Surrey prison officer.

Jack Richard Foster faced a smoking ban at High Down prison in February 2008. His punishment included seven days’ loss of tobacco, 14 days’ loss of canteen privileges and seven days’ loss of earnings.

Foster’s lawyers at the London High Court claim that the prison’s staff breached their client’s human rights by submitting him to “cruel and unusual punishment”, The Telegraph reports.

They argued that, as a tobacco addict and habitual smoker, Foster should have been given nicotine skin patches, chewing gum or some other means during the period the smoking ban was in force.

Foster’s legal team also argued that there were more appropriate ways of disciplining him without violating his fundamental rights, and said the prison authorities were under a duty to offer “nicotine replacement therapy” to prisoners if tobacco was withdrawn as a punishment.

Meanwhile, Justice Collins adjourned the case so that more information could be gathered, and said it should come on for a full hearing in June-July this year. (ANI)

Pope’s former archdiocese in Germany faces ”tsunami” of sex abuse claims

London, Mar.20 (ANI): Pope Benedict XVI”s former archdiocese in Germany has been overwhelmed by a “tsunami” of sex abuse claims, according to the head of new taskforce set up to deal with the issue.

According to The Telegraph, reports have emerged almost daily of sex abuse cases involving Catholic clergy in several European countries.

The spreading controversy threatens to overshadow a letter the Pope is expected to release on Saturday about the scandals that wracked Ireland.

Fresh claims emerged that Benedict XVI failed to do enough to safeguard children from paedophile priests when, as Joseph Ratzinger, he was the archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982.

“It”s like a tsunami,” said Elke Huemmeler, the head of the diocese”s newly established Task Force on Sexual Abuse Prevention, the first of its kind in the German Catholic Church.

The body, which started work yesterday, will review about 120 cases of alleged sexual abuse – among the 300 reported across Germany since January.

Around 100 of the claims involve a boarding school run by Benedictine monks at Ettal, in the foothills of the Alps in southern Bavaria.

The most damaging revelation is that Pope Benedict allowed a priest accused of molesting an 11-year-old boy to be moved from another diocese in order to undergo “therapy” in 1980.

The priest, Peter Hullermann, 62, was later released back into the community and was convicted of child sex abuse and given an 18 month suspended sentence in 1986.

The Vatican has insisted that by that time the future Pope had moved to Rome to take up a new appointment, but a member of the diocese said that he and colleagues should have been informed by him that Hullermann was an offender.

The sex abuse scandal, which has also swept through the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, reached Italy this week. (ANI)

Obama delays Australian trip till June

Washington, Mar. 19 (ANI): U.S. President Barack Obama has cancelled his upcoming trip to Australia in order to garner support for the healthcare bill – the centrepiece of his domestic policies.

After insisting for the entire week that Obama’s would go ahead to Australia as planned on March 21, White House officials on Friday announced the trip would be delayed until June.

“So it just at that point seemed obvious to us that the best course of business was to reschedule Indonesia and Australia for June,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said.

A mid-year visit is likely to coincide with his daughters” summer break, putting an Obama family holiday back on the agenda, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Obama had originally planned to bring his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia on the trip to Asia.

But when administration officials realised they lacked congressional support for the important healthcare vote, they pushed back his trip three days and decided the President would travel alone.

Now, Democrats believe that Obama shouldn’t leaving America at all during such a critical stage for his signature initiative.

Succumbing to that pressure, Obama today decided to stay in Washington until well after the vote, which will likely happen Sunday afternoon.

“Passage of healthcare reform is of paramount importance and the President is determined to see this battle through. The President believes right now the place for him to be is in Washington to see this through,” Gibbs said.

Obama called Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd this morning to explain his delay. (ANI)

Obama’s job approval rating nosedives to all time low of 46 percent

Washington, Mar. 13 (ANI): The job approval rating of US President Barack Obama has hit a record low (46 percent) amid rising doubts over his ability to push health care reforms – the centrepiece of his domestic policies – through Congress.

According to a new Gallup survey, Obama”s approval rating fell to a record 46 per cent, which was 69 percent in the early days of his presidency.

His popularity among Democrat supporters fell due to doubts about his ability to pass health care reforms, while independents and Republicans consider it to be an expensive government venture, The Telegraph reports.

Obama was supposed to leave for Guam, Indonesia and Australia this week. Obama had spent four years as a boy in Indonesia, which was supposed to be the highlight of the trip.

But with the future of health care change now in a critical condition the White House has decided Obama needs to stay in Washington to twist arms in Congress, the paper says.

A likely target will be up to 12 Democrats who say they will not vote for the proposed bill because it doesn”t prevent federal funds being used for abortions, it adds.

According to the report, Obama will also make his case at further town hall meetings with the aim of building public support and raising the pressure on stubborn Democrats.

His plans would extend coverage to 30 million uninsured Americans, financed by slowing the growth of government-run health care for the elderly and raising some taxes. (ANI)

Mittal may buy out Briatore from QPR after F-1 match fixing controversy

London, Sep 20 (ANI): Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal is now considering buying out Falvio Briatore stake at Queens Park Rangers after he was engulfed in controversy as manager of Renault’s Formula One team.

Briatore, the Italian playboy, ordered a racing driver to crash his car deliberately last year, costing him his job.

The Indian billionaire was persuaded by Briatore to become an investor in Queens Park Rangers football club in 2007, but is now reportedly reconsidering his ties with the flamboyant tycoon, The Telegraph reports.

Mittal, who remains one of the wealthiest men in the world, is represented at the club by the popular board member and his son-in-law, Amit Bhatia.

“Lakshmi is extremely concerned about what has happened,” said one of his associates.

“He is keen to improve his image in this country and takes this matter very seriously. He is now considering whether the best way forward would be for him to buy Flavio out of QPR,” the source added.

Briatore could potentially be extradited to Singapore to face criminal charges in the wake of his departure from Renault in connection with the race-fixing claims.

There are also legal challenges open to Ferrari and their driver Felipe Massa, who missed out on last year’s world drivers’ crown by a single point; and to Renault itself, which may want to sue its former employees for allegedly bringing the company’s name into disrepute. (ANI)
