Martin Rapaport Begins 3 Day Protest Fast Outside Kimberley Process Meeting

TEL AVIV, Israel–(Business Wire)–
Martin Rapaport, Chairman of the Rapaport Group has begun a three day fast
outside the Kimberley Process (KP) meetings. The water-only fast began at
sundown Sunday, June 20 and will continue until sundown Wednesday, June 24
following the close of the KP meetings in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Rapaport is fasting to protest the issuing of Kimberley Process Certificates for
blood diamonds and to draw attention to the fact that it is unethical for the
diamond and jewelry trade to rely upon the Kimberley Process Certificate Scheme
or System of Warranties to ensure that diamonds are not involved in severe human
rights violations such as murder, mutilation, rape, and forced servitude.

Martin Rapaport statement:

“The Kimberley Process (KP) is aiding and abetting severe human rights
violations as it certifies, legalizes and legitimizes blood diamonds. Corrupt
governments have turned the KP on its head. Instead of eliminating human rights
violations the KP is legitimizing them.

“The diamond trade and consumers cannot trust the Kimberley Process, its system
of warranties, or those that promote the Kimberley Process as an assurance of
the legitimate source of diamonds. We must face the fact that the Kimberley
Process is a politicized government-controlled initiative that is incapable of
eliminating human rights violations in the diamond sector. It`s time for the
World Diamond Council and responsible NGO`s to withdraw from the KP.

“The solution is outside the KP. The diamond trade must take full responsibility
for how and where it buys its diamonds. It must stop hiding behind the KP and
recognize that it has moral and ethical obligations that transcend national and
international laws. While governments cannot enforce international human rights
standards due to sovereignty issues, diamond traders can use their purchasing
power to enforce such standards. The key to understanding this issue is that, in
the end, our diamonds are only as good as we are.”

Israeli President recovering in hospital after collapse

Tel Aviv (Israel), Sep. 13 (ANI): Israeli President Shimon Peres is recovering in a hospital here after fainting on stage during a conference.

Peres, who was elected president in 2007, is under observation in the cardiology department of the Tel Hashomer hospital in Tel Aviv. Sky News reports.

The 86-year-old has had tests but “feels fine” following the incident at the Yitzhak Rabin Centre.

His spokeswoman Ayelet Frisch said: “The president apparently suffered a drop in blood pressure.

“He is now fully functional and his personal doctor ran a series of tests which were normal. We can relax now. I’ve spoken to him and he’s fully conscious.”

The president’s personal doctor, who is also his son-in-law, added: “It was very hot and he was standing for a long time and began to feel weak. He fainted for a few seconds. Now he feels fine, is smiling and speaking on the phone to everyone.”

Peres has cancelled some of his official engagements because of the incident, Frisch said. (ANI)

Seven North Carolinians charged with participating in a terror plot

Washington, July 28 (ANI): Seven North Carolina men were arrested and charged on Monday with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists overseas.

It is unclear whether the group is connected to Al Qaeda or some other overseas radical group. No such group is identified in the 14-page indictment that was unsealed on Monday.

According to the Christian Science Monitor (CSM), federal authorities also charged the men with plotting to murder, kidnap, and maim individuals overseas as part of a plan to wage what prosecutors said was “violent jihad.”

It is unclear who the intended victims of the group might be, as no precise plot has been identified in the indictment beyond a broad goal of waging “violent jihad.”

Daniel Patrick Boyd, the lead defendant, is an alleged “veteran of terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

Officials alleged that he conspired for three years to recruit young men to travel overseas for jihad.

“These charges hammer home the point that terrorists and their supporters are not confined to the remote regions of some faraway land but can grow and fester right here at home,” said US Attorney George Holding.

The seven men appeared in federal court in Raleigh, North Carolina, and were ordered held without bond pending a detention hearing set for Thursday.

According to the indictment, Boyd traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan where he “received military-style training in terrorist training camps for the purpose of engaging in violent jihad.”

The indictment says this training took place between 1989 and 1992.

Specifically, the indictment says Boyd and his son, Zakariya Boyd, traveled to Gaza in March 2006, where the elder Boyd “attempted to enter Palestine in order to introduce his son to individuals who also believed that violent jihad was a personal obligation.”

Boyd and his son traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel, on June 12, 2007. They returned to the US a month later, according to the indictment, “having failed in their attempt to engage in violent jihad.”

Boyd is also charged with lying to US officials about his travel plans and with purchasing a number of rifles and other firearms.

If convicted, the defendants face up to life in prison. (ANI)

Israel’s Netanyahu postpones Europe trip: reports

Tel Aviv – Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed a planned trip to Europe next week, local media reported Wednesday.

Netanyahu had been scheduled to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Officials cited in the reports said Netanyahu feared becoming involved in a diplomatic spat over his refusal to endorse publicly the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

A “senior official” in Netanyahu’s office however was quoted as saying the visit, had been postponed because of more urgent matters in Israel which needed the prime minister’s attention, such as ensuring passage of the state budget.

The visit was to have been Netanyahu’s first to France and Italy since he was sworn in as premier on March 31.(dpa)

Israel scrambles jets after incoming flight fails to make contact

Tel Aviv – Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon, and the air force scrambled fighter planes, after an incoming flight lost contact with the control tower, sparking fears it had been hijacked. The incoming plane, a Delta Airlines flight from New York with 105 passengers on board, managed to let the fighters know that technical problems had prevented it from contacting the Ben Gurion control tower, Israeli media reported.

The flight, escorted by two fighters, landed safely at a side runway and no injuries or damage were reported.

Incoming flights to Ben Gurion Airport, located east of Tel Aviv, must conduct a communications check at several points on the way to Israel, to confirm the airplane has not been hijacked.

Israel’s transport ministry will investigate the incident next week.(dpa)

Israel successfully tests Arrow anti-missile missile

Tel Aviv – Israel conducted a successful test of its Arrow anti-missile missile Monday, firing the projectile at a rocket simulating an incoming Iranian Shihab missile and hitting it about 100 kilometres from Israel’s coastline.

Security officials quoted on Israel Radio said the test was meant to extend the response capability of the Arrow missile system and adapt it to the threats against Israel.

“The system comprises a large number of new components. They were inserted to provide a response to future threats,” Yoav Turjeman, the director of the Arrow missile project, said after the test.

“Basically, the goals we defined for ourselves were all met,” he added.

Monday’s test was the 18th of the anti-missile missile, and the first in which the recently modified Arrow 2 was tested in its entirety, along with a new radar system.

The arrow project is jointly funded by the United States and Israel, to provide a defence against ballistic missiles launched by Iran and Syria. (dpa)

Israel seals off West Bank ahead of Passover festival

Tel Aviv – Israel will seal off the West Bank from midnight Monday (2200 GMT) for the duration of the seven-day Passover festival, which begins Wednesday at sunset, the Israeli military said in a statement.

The closure will remain in effect until Saturday April 18, according to “security assessments,” the statement said.

However, persons needing medical assistance will not be affected, nor will humanitarian aid, doctors, lawyers, non-governmental organizations and religious workers, and the commercial crossings will remain open to allow goods to enter the West Bank.

Israel usually seals off the West Bank ahead of major Jewish holidays, for fear militants will cross into Israel to carry out attacks in public places, which are usually crowded.

In March 2002 a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 30 Israelis who were about to sit down to a festive Passover meal in a hotel in the coastal city of Netanya.

Israel to probe soldiers’ for using excessive force during Gaza operation

Tel Aviv (Israel), Mar.21 (ANI): After repeatedly rebuffing charges of having committed war crimes in its recent war against Hamas in Gaza, a stunned Israel has changed track and instructed its military prosecutor to launch a criminal investigation into the alleged deliberate killing of women, children, and elderly non-combatants by Israeli soldiers.

According to a report in the Christian Science Monitor (CSM), this marks the first acknowledgement by Israel of possible misdeeds in a war that left 1,300 Gazans dead, thousands more injured, and billions of dollars worth of property damaged.

“I hope there’s an in-depth investigation into this issue,” Education Minister Yuli Tamir told the Ha’aretz newspaper.

“This needs to be checked out immediately and openly, and if there’s a grain of truth in it, it must be protested,” he added.arlier this month, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at The Hague said that he is mulling an investigation in to allegations of war crimes in Gaza.

The anecdotal testimony, which was submitted to the army last month and then published in the military prep school’s bulletin, contradicts the military’s portrayal of soldiers as trying to minimize civilian casualties wherever possible.

In one instance, soldiers killed a woman and two children at a distance of 100 to 200 yards away because they had misunderstood the army instructions on how to leave the combat zone.

Another veteran described an officer who ordered machine-gunners to fire at an elderly woman who was also positioned far away.

In the testimony, the soldiers admitted that excessive force was used because the lives of Palestinian civilians were valued far less than those of the soldiers.

“I was shocked,” said an Israeli military spokesperson, who requested to remain anonymous.

“Some of the stuff described there is far from the rules of the engagement that I know,” he added. (ANI)
