Malaysian politician questions effectiveness of religious raids

Kuantan, Apr 27 (ANI): In the wake of the shocking suicide by a Malay teenager, who flung himself off the fifth floor in a bid to evade officers conducting religious raids, Malaysian politician Adnan Yaakob has questioned the effectiveness of such exercises.

He believes that were the people targeted by these raids alive, they would at least have a chance of reforming themselves and adopting a lifestyle that upholds Islamic values.

“I think it is better to give them guidance rather than raiding a place. Raids will cause the person to panic and do something irrational like jumping off a building,” Adnan told the State Assembly at Kuantan, The Star reports.

He also raised the issue of teenage suicides caused by depression and urged teachers to be more observant and counsel those susceptible. (ANI)

Teenager Noh targets record Asian Tour earnings crown

South Korean teenager Noh Seung-yul has his sights set on becoming the youngest winner of the Asian Tour order of merit title after taking top spot following a strong finish at the Ballantine’s Championship.

The 18-year-old fired a final round four-under-par 68 on Sunday to finish five shots behind winner Marcus Fraser of Australia in a tie for fourth but the $137,760 cheque moved him above Andrew Dodt in the earnings standings.

“It’s nice to be on top of the Asian Tour order of merit and I hope to do well to secure my position,” Noh said in an Asian Tour statement on Monday.

“I know if I win the order of merit, I’ll be the youngest player to do so but at the moment, I don’t want to think too far ahead as there are still many more events this year and things might change. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself.”

The slender teenager learned to play by hitting balls on the beach near his home and made his global breakthrough with a victory at the co-sanctioned Malaysian Open last month, becoming the youngest professional winner on the European Tour.

Noh followed that up by qualifying for the British Open the following week through International Final Qualifying (Asia) in a hot and humid Malaysia but dealt well gloomy conditions at home during last week’s 54-hole Ballantine’s Championship.

“It was a tough week especially with the fog delay during the opening round,” Noh added.

“The weather conditions were tough but I’m happy I played well under all these circumstances and I know my game can only get better when I play against these strong players.”

He was ordered to complete 200 hours of community work.

He said Craft started drinking and using drugs when he was a teenager.

Justice Refshauge noted his lengthy criminal history and said this was a chance for him to turn his life around.

He sentenced Craft to four-and-a-half years in jail, but he will be eligible for parole next April.

Expo offers job hope

A teenager who secured employment at Wollongong’s recent Jobs Expo says the opportunity has changed her life.

Megan Harding, 19, was among 13 hospitality trainees to meet the federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird, yesterday.

Ms Harding, of Towradgi, is now involved in a 16-week training program at some of Wollongong’s tourism hospitality venues.

She says she was unemployed for more than a year, despite getting a hospitality qualification after leaving school.

“It’s been really tough. I’d been sending hundreds and hundreds of applications and hadn’t got a job out of it,” she said.

“I was planning on going … my sister was an exhibitor there and she rang me and said, ‘get down here because they’ve got over 400 jobs going’.

“So I got down there and I found it really good because it gave me a chance to meet the employers directly.”

Ms Harding says the region would benefit from holding the event again soon.

“I think it’s one of the best thing that’s ever happened and it’s such a good opportunity to meet employers face-to-face.” she said.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for employers. I think it’d be really beneficial to have again … it’s such a great opportunity and I feel really thankful for it.”

Teen jailed over taxi terror

A knife-wielding teenager who tried to rob a Hobart taxi driver of his cab and then stole another car has avoided jail.

Luke Ryan Douglas has received a six month suspended prison sentence.

The Supreme Court in Hobart heard Douglas booked the taxi then tried to steal it when it arrived at his Blackmans Bay home last December.

The 19 year old produced a knife and told the driver to get out of his cab, then jumped on the roof and started stabbing the windscreen.

The court heard the driver managed to get away but in doing so crashed his taxi, causing significant damage.

Douglas then flagged down a passing car, pointed a knife at the occupants and fled in their vehicle.

He pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery, assault and armed robbery.

The court heard Douglas suffered from depression and was drinking bourbon and sniffing petrol in the lead up to his crimes.

Charmaine Mann named Qld Mother of the Year

Ms Mann, 50, from Tannum Sands south of Gladstone has six children and has also fostered others, some of whom have had drug-related issues.

She will be in the running for the Australian Mother of Year to be named just before Mother’s Day in May.

Ms Mann says her foster role started gradually.

“The first child was a teenager working with my husband and he needed somewhere to stay,” she said.

“My husband said we have a spare bedroom under the house – why don’t we let him come and live with us?

“It just sort of went from there.

“Most children bring home stray animals and say ‘can we keep it can we keep it’ – well my children started bringing home stray children and saying ‘can we keep ‘em can we keep ‘em’?”

Colombian rebels release hostage after 12 years

A Colombian soldier captured as a teenager by the country’s left-wing FARC rebels has been released after more than 12 years as a hostage.

Sergeant Pablo Moncayo was 19 when he was captured. He was a corporal at the time but was promoted while in captivity.

The Red Cross coordinated the handover that took place at a remote jungle location in the south of the country.

Sergeant Moncayo’s plight has received international media attention largely due to his father’s lobbying efforts in which he would wear chains to symbolise his son’s captivity.

But the rebels say no more hostages will be released until Colombian president Alvaro Uribe agrees to negotiate a prisoner exchange.

Mr Uribe has a hardline policy against the rebels, but says an exchange is possible if freed guerillas do not rejoin the FARC.
