European company develops mobile robots that are autonomous and multi-tasking

Madrid (Spain), September 19 (ANI): An European company has developed innovative robots which are mobile, multifunctional, collaborative, autonomous and polyvalent, suitable for a wide range of work from street cleaning and rubbish collection to accompanying elderly people.

According to a report carried out in www.basqueresearch.com, this new generation of robots have been developed by TECNALIA Technological Corporation, and are a part of the European DUSTBOT research project under the remit of the VI European Framework Programme and in which TECNALIA is participating.

These latest generation robots are suitable for the monitoring of large spaces (open and closed), as guides for persons in large shopping areas (indicating to them where a particular shop or product is within a shopping centre), for accompanying elderly people or those with certain disabilities (both at home and outside), thanks to their functions of orientation, navigation, communications with others or tele-assistance centres.

They can also be used as guides in teaching spaces (museums, visitor centres), and for transport, storage and transport and goods deliveries, besides the cleaning of both open and closed surfaces, which have either difficult or easy access.

DUSTBOT has collaborative, multifunctional and autonomous robots that are capable of operating in partially destructured environments/situations based on information provided by a map.

The robots can also facilitate working in large areas, stations, airports and other types of public buildings, without being any obstacle for the activity of these places, given its reduced size, and without being a danger for members of the public, thanks to the novel system for the detection and avoidance of obstacles.

The rail station of the Euskotren company in the Bilbao neighbourhood of Atxuri in Spain was chosen for the public presentation of these devices.

The demonstration of two robot models was undertaken: the DustCart and the DustClean.

The DustCart robot, measuring 1.45 metres high and 70 Kg in weight, has a humanoid form and is designed to interact with the user and for the collection of low demand waste.

The DustClean robot, in the form of a small vehicle and measuring 96 cm high and 250 Kg in weight, cleans streets of dirt and dust. Moreover, both control the quality of air in real time.

“These robots are the solution for cleaning areas of difficult access and for the collection of rubbish at the very front door of, above all, persons who have mobility problems when moving the rubbish to the communal waste containers,” said Inaki Inzunza, Director of the Business Unit at the Tecnalia Technological Corporation. Three genes linked to Lou Gehrig’s disease identified

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): Researchers at Michigan Technological University have identified three genes that play a major role in the most common type of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), generally known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The team of mathematicians, led by Shuanglin Zhang, isolated the genes from the many thousands scattered throughout human DNA.

Zhang noted that the discovery does not mean an end to ALS, but it could provide scientists with valuable clues as they search for a cure.

“I felt very urgent to find the genes for ALS,” Zhang said.

“This is very nice work. It’s very challenging to map genes for complex diseases, and while many statistical methods have been developed, most don’t work well in practice. Zhang’s group has developed a method to detect genes and gene-gene interaction in complex diseases and provided evidence that it works,” said Xiaofeng Zhu, an associate professor of epidemiology at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine.

“Their findings will need to be confirmed by other researchers, but I think this will be very useful for the investigators who are trying to find genes underlying complex diseases such as ALS,” said Zhu.

According to the ALS Association, only about 10 percent of patients have familial ALS, a directly inherited form of the usually fatal neuromuscular disorder, while the remaining 90 percent are diagnosed with the sporadic form of the disease.

While everyone has the three genes in question, but in people with sporadic ALS, they differ from those in people who don’t have ALS.

The mathematicians were not surprised when they tracked down the location of the genes.

“Everybody has 23 chromosomes, and the three genes on chromosomes 2, 4, and 10 interact. If you have this combination of the three genes, you are at high risk of developing the disease. It’s really exciting, especially because my husband has sporadic ALS. Maybe they can find a cure by blocking the genes,” explained Zhang’s wife Qiuying Sha.

ALS destroys the nerves in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary movement, eventually leading to paralysis.

Zhang’s team used a new statistical method to analyse the genetic codes of 547 individuals, 276 with sporadic ALS and 271 without.

The method, a two-locus interaction analysis approach, allows the researchers to identify multiple genes associated with a complex illness.

The data set they analyzed was provided by National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Human Genetics Resource Center at the Coriell Institute, a publicly funded “bank” or repository for human cells, DNA samples, clinical data, and other information that aims to accelerate research on the genetics of nervous system disorders.

The study has been published in the open access journal BMC Medical Genetics. (ANI)

Prime Minister to inaugurate anti-corruption conference on Wednesday

New Delhi, Aug.25 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate a two-day Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conference on anti-corruption on Wednesday.

During the conference the issues of corruption and efficacy of the existing legal system in dealing with the menace will be deliberated upon.

The 17th biennial conference of CBI, State anti-corruption bureaux and vigilance agencies attended by their chiefs aims at strengthening the anti-corruption mechanism in the country.

According to an official release, various dimensions of corruption in India and the strategies to effectively handle it and also focus on the efficacy of existing legal instruments and administrative arrangements to deal with the menace will be deliberated upon.

The conference would have seven sessions during which several presentations and discussions on the subjects of topical interest including that about the probe into the multi-crore rupees Satyam scam would be made.

The topics covered during the conference include Anti Corruption Work in Karnataka Lokayukta- A study; Innovation as a tactical tool to combat corruption; Good practices followed by anti-corruption agencies.

Investigation of anti-corruption cases- Technological perspectives; Capacity building for Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) and State FSLs; Vigilance aspects in public procurement and tendering processes; Contemporaneous issues (State referred issues) would also figure during the conference. The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in association with the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education is going to conduct its first Career Awareness and Recruitment Drive (CARD) programme on its premises at Kukatpally on July 11.

D.N Reddy, vice-chancellor, JNTU said, “Only graduates, including B.E (or) B.Tech and MBA, MCA post graduates from different universities in the State are eligible for registration.”

Interested candidates can enroll their names by paying Rs.10 as registration fee on Saturday from 9.30 a.m. onwards.

Three registration counters have been set up at Academic Staff College, School of IT and College of Engineering in university premises.

Candidates are advised to carry minimum of ten resume copies, passport size photographs and true copies of marksheets and other certificates.

Cabbage fuel-powered jets can cut carbon emissions by 84pct

Washington, June 20 (ANI): Jet fuel’s grave carbon emissions can be reduced by about 84 per cent by refining it from the seeds of a lowly weed, which is a cousin to the cabbage, says a Michigan Technological University researcher.

David Shonnard, Robbins Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering, came to this conclusion after analysing the carbon dioxide emissions of jet fuel made from camelina oil over the course of its life cycle, from planting to tailpipe.

“Camelina jet fuel exhibits one of the largest greenhouse gas emission reductions of any agricultural feedstock-derived biofuel I’ve ever seen. This is the result of the unique attributes of the crop-its low fertilizer requirements, high oil yield, and the availability of its coproducts, such as meal and biomass, for other uses,” he said.

Originated in Europe, Camelina sativa is a member of the mustard family, along with broccoli, cabbage and canola.

Also known as false flax or gold-of-pleasure, it thrives in the semi-arid conditions of the Northern Plains. The camelina used for the research was grown in Montana.

Shonnard points out that it is possible to convert oil from camelina to a hydrocarbon green jet fuel that meets or exceeds all petroleum jet fuel specifications.

According to the researcher, the fuel is a “drop-in” replacement that is compatible with the existing fuel infrastructure, from storage and transportation to aircraft fleet technology.

“It is almost an exact replacement for fossil fuel. Jets can’t use oxygenated fuels like ethanol; they have to use hydrocarbon replacements,” Shonnard said.

Given that camelina needs little water or nitrogen to flourish, Shonnard says that it can be grown on marginal agricultural lands.

“Unlike ethanol made from corn or biodiesel made from soy, it won’t compete with food crops. And it may be used as a rotation crop for wheat, to increase the health of the soil,” the researcher added.

Shonnard conducted the life cycle analysis for UOP LLC, of Des Plaines, Ill., a subsidiary of Honeywell and a provider of oil refining technology.

When asked whether people will soon be flying in plant-powered aircraft, Tom Kalnes, a senior development associate for UOP in its renewable energy and chemicals research group, said: “It depends.”

Kalnes added: “There are a few critical issues. The most critical is the price and availability of commercial-scale quantities of second generation feedstocks.”

He further said that more farmers would be require to be convinced to grow a new crop, and refiners must want to process it.

“But if it can create jobs and income opportunities in rural areas, that would be wonderful,” he said. (ANI)

Government to set up an institute of design at Bhopal

New Delhi, Feb 25 (ANI): A design education campus of National Institute of Design (NID), Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, will be set up in Bhopal for imparting education in design, applied research, training, design consultancy services and outreach programmes.

The institute, being set up at the initiative of Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath, would function from a 12-hectare campus.

The NID, Ahmedabad has already taken steps to conduct some fundamental programmes in design in collaboration with Rajiv Gandhi Technological University (RGTU) so as to foster design-technology initiative in Bhopal and help potential students of RGTU to opt design as high education career option when the Institute would start functioning.

The NID is one of the premier institutions in the field of design and has been recognized as a scientific and industrial research organisation.

It is among the top ranking design schools of Europe and Asia. It was established in 1961 as an autonomous institution under the Government of India.

The industrial design module will be introduced in June 2010 in the various engineering departments of Rajiv Gandhi Technical University of Bhopal, for getting the overview of industrial design which will help the students from Bachelor of Mechanical engineering, Production engineering and also Electronic Engineering to understand more about Design.

A one-year certificate programme on design for engineering / technology will commence during June 2010 and further, commencement of two-year PG programme from June 2011, from new campus. (ANI)

Resurrect the intelligence services

Islamabad, Jan. 4 (ANI): The recent high-profile terrorist attacks in Pakistan and India have drawn attention to the need for reform of the intelligence services.

The large number of Intelligence agencies in India and Pakistan seems to be inefficient with their tendencies to work against each other rather than as a team, the Dawn noted.

Another reason is the large size of under funded agencies working with poorly trained individuals. Often, the permanent employees of the intelligence agencies are neglected, while the part-timers from the police, civil service, and military, head the proceedings.

Continuous political interference in personnel management is also one of the major drawbacks of these intelligence agencies.

It is no secret that Indian and Pakistani governments use and abuse the intelligence resources for partisan or personal political gain.

Many successive governments in Pakistan have, meanwhile, considered it their right to purge and install intelligence personnel on the basis of their perceived political loyalties.

To resurrect the investigative agencies, governments of both the nations should stop interfering with the agencies’ affairs. Secondly, an effective coordinating head is needed for all the intelligence agencies equipped with statutory powers.

Any drastic changes in the intelligence gathering mechanism can be of no use unless all the laws and procedures are studied and brought into effect properly.

A comprehensive review of existing postings and organisational structures would have to be undertaken as harmful gaps in the structure can obstruct the agency to be in sync with its objectives.

Finally, financial inputs and technological improvements should be made in the to upgrade the salary structure in all levels of the intelligence apparatus. (ANI)
