Olympian Linford Christie discharged from hospital after head-on car crash

London, May 19 (ANI): Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie, 50, was discharged from a hospital in Buckinghamshire on Tuesday, hours after being involved in a head-on crash.

His car collided with a taxi – in which three other people were injured.

The former 100m gold medallist staggered from his mangled Audi A8 and lay on the ground in agony clutching his stomach.

Two ambulances rushed to the country road in Buckinghamshire shortly before midnight.

Minicab driver Naeem Akhtar broke both arms and legs as well as a foot and ankle, while two male passengers in his Mercedes E220 suffered broken bones.

Of the other three injured, a police spokesman said: “They remain in hospital in a serious but stable condition.”

A woman also travelling in the taxi escaped injury. (ANI)

Footballer shot dead in Mexico

Mexico City, May 8 (DPA) A 21-year-old footballer who was active in the second category of Mexican football was shot dead in an apparent hold-up in southern Mexico City, his club said.

Ademir Meza played for Pumas Morelos, the second team of Mexican football giants Pumas de la UNAM. He was shot dead late Thursday inside his car, on a Mexico City avenue.

Police said the defender had resisted an attempt by two people travelling in another vehicle to rob him.

The city’s Justice Ministry said Meza and a passenger had been followed by another vehicle, possibly a taxi, that tried to block their way in the Pedregal de Santo Domingo neighbourhood.

The authorities said one of the attackers had a firearm and shot the player. The paramedics deployed to deal with the emergency could not save Meza’s life. The person who was travelling with him was unhurt.

This is the second case of a shooting involving a football player in Mexico City this year.

Top striker Salvador Cabanas, a pillar of the America team in Mexico and of the Paraguay national team, was shot in the head at a bar in January. Cabanas was seriously injured but survived and is currently recovering in Argentina, although the bullet remains lodged in his head and his return to professional football is uncertain.

Brit kids feel safer in mum”s taxi than when dad is behind the wheel!

Melbourne, April 30 (ANI): Most British children prefer being in mum”s taxi than when dad is behind the wheel, says a survey.

The British Guild of Experienced Motorists survey found that a lot of children feel their fathers drive too fast.

Apparently, six out of 10 children aged five to 16 are happier and more relaxed when their mother is driving.

The survey claimed that 39 per cent of the kids were too scared to comment when their fathers drove rashly. Only 26 per cent asked dad to slow down and 22 per cent gripped the seat nervously.

On the other hand, 70 per cent of children said their mums happily sang their heart out while driving and 52 per cent said they talked non-stop to keep the family entertained.

Meanwhile, Australian road safety campaigner Russell White insists there is a difference between the way men and women drive.

“Women are more neutral in their views of the external environment while men are more aggressive. It”s one of the reasons kids get car sick,” the Couriermail quoted him, as saying.

He added: “Kids exposed to poor driving copy that behaviour. They are a product of their parents.

“They watch everything that is going on and those seeds that are planted early come to fruit in their teens.” (ANI)

Another Indian student attacked in Australia

Sydney, Apr 30(ANI): In yet another attack on Indian students in Australia, a 24-year-old youth was beaten up by three unidentified assailants in Westmead, New South Wales, police said.

Merrylands Police said the man was walking along Amos Street at 7.30p.m. on Wednesday when three men came from behind him and repeatedly hit him in the face.

“The blows forced the man to the ground where he was set upon by three attackers who began kicking him,” The Daily Telegraph quoted a police statement, as saying.

“When a passenger from a passing taxi stopped to assist the victim, one of the assailants stole the assaulted man’s wallet, containing a small amount of money, and the attackers fled on foot towards the Parramatta Golf Club,” it added.

Police attended the scene along with paramedics. The student suffered a bleeding nose and cut to his mouth and was treated at the scene.

The attack follows a string of similar attacks against Indians in the country in the last 12 months. (ANI)

Brit women arrested for trying to smuggle dead relative on plane

London, Apr 7 (ANI): Two Brit women tried to fool authorities by checking in a dead relative on to a plane at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, according to officials.

The pair put the corpse in a wheelchair and even placed sunglasses on him to try to fool staff.

But while trying to check the deceased man in, suspicious employees alerted the authorities and the women were arrested at the scene.

It is believed that the 91-year-old German national had died a day earlier, and the women were trying to smuggle his body back home.

“The airport staff at the check in were not happy with the situation,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.he women, 41 and 66, were questioned on suspicion of “failing to give notification of a death” and bailed.

The pair, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, managed to transport the body from their home to the airport by taxi.

It is said that the driver was left “upset and devastated” after being informed of the incident.

The duo was apparently attempting to smuggle the body back to avoid fees for repatriation, which could cost up to 3,000 pounds.

Merseyside Police confirmed the man was dead on arrival at the airport.

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 91-year-old German male passenger at JLA, due to fly out to Berlin on Saturday,” said a spokesman.

“Two people are helping police with their inquiries.

“We are still investigating the exact circumstances of the death, but don’t believe it is murder or manslaughter at this stage,” added the rep. (ANI)

Sydney magistrate allows Indian cabbie accused of ‘kidnapping’ five female passengers to visit mum

Sydney, Apr.7 (ANI): A Gold Coast magistrate has suspended police reporting conditions for an Indian cabbie charged with kidnapping five female passengers so he can return home to visit his mum.

According to The Courier Mail, suspended Gold Coast Cabs driver Karan Luthra allegedly refused to let the frightened women out of his taxi after they disputed the fare and instead took them on a wild 25-minute ride through Surfers Paradise.

Southport magistrate Terry Duroux today overruled police objections and gave the 24-year-old permission to fly back to India to see his mother and attend his sister’s wedding.

But he imposed a 5000-dollar surety to prevent the university student and part-time cab driver from doing a ‘runner’.

Luthra was charged with five counts of deprivation of liberty over the March 13 incident.

Applying for the bail relaxation, defence solicitor Katie Chan said Luthra wanted to return home to India to visit his depressed mother and go to the wedding.

Police prosecutor Brian Cazzulino strongly opposed the move, saying it was not as if Luthra’s mother was dying. (ANI)

New outdoor smoking bans loom

The Greater Taree City Council expects people to respect new widespread smoking bans.

Smoking will soon be banned 10 metres from playgrounds, sporting fields and council owned buildings as well as covered bus stops and taxi ranks.

The executive leader of service delivery, Ron Posselt, says many local government areas are introducing similar changes.

He says most smokers understand that other people do not want to inhale their smoke and will obey the signs.

“There will be signs erected to advise people that they’re not to smoke in those areas and we’ll be implementing an education program,” Mr Posselt said.

“In the first instance we are looking at educating the public to smoke elsewhere. It’s not that people can’t smoke, there are many places they can smoke.

“Quite often they only need to take half a dozen paces in one direction and they’ll be able to smoke in those areas.”

Mr Posselt says the bans are strongly supported by the Cancer Council.

“Council have been out to public consultation on this issue and the feedback we’ve received was very positive to implement these bans,” he said.

When Kelly Brook puked in her £1,600 designer bag

London, March 17 (ANI): Kelly Brook managed to reduce her favourite designer handbag to ruins after puking in it on a booze-fuelled night.

The 30-year-old actress revealed she got so drunk, she ended up being sick in the 1,600-pound Hermes Birkin leather bag, the Daily Star reported.

The star, who confessed it was the most she had ever paid for a bag, however, was glad she did not create a mess in the taxi.

She said: “I had to send it to the Hermes repair hospital in Paris. But hey, better in there than in the cab, right?” (ANI)

Pak police close to recovering abducted UK-born boy: Malik

Islamabad, Mar 8(ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik insists that police are close to recovering abducted five-year-old UK-born Sahil Saeed.

“I am hopeful that we will be able to recover the boy within the next few days. I appeal to those who did it that they release the child within 48 hours,” The Daily Times quoted Malik, as saying.

Malik further said the involvement of someone “very close to the family” could not be ruled out and the police were also looking the matter with reference to this angle.

“We have certain leads that I would not like to discuss, but I warn them (the abductors), we are very near to you,” he said.

Police officials, however, said they were still searching for clues with no fresh contact from the kidnapping gang.

Some unknown persons had kidnapped Sahil on last Wednesday after terrorising his family at a time when his father Raja Naqash Saeed was waiting for a taxi to leave for airport.

The boy has not been recovered despite tall claims of the federal and provincial governments regarding his early recovery. (ANI)

Tribal boy with 260 hours flying experience now a cabbie

NEW DELHI: A Scheduled Tribe boy from Hyderabad wanted so desperately to become a pilot, he took a bank loan to pay for the training and notched up 267 hours of flying, 17 more than is required for a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL). But, instead of ending up in the cockpit, he now drives a taxi in Hyderabad.

P Chandan Chakravarthy of the Kondakappu tribe could not manage to get his dreams take wing but the lad clearly possessed an extraordinary level of determination.

He enrolled at the Andhra Pradesh FLying Club (now known as AP Aviation Academy) in April 1995. Back then, every hour of flying cost Rs 600. By 2001, when he accumulated 267 hours, the cost had spiralled to Rs 2,800 per hours. A resolute Chakravarthy took a bank loan of Rs 7.5 lakh.

He applied to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for his CPL but the DGCA turned him down saying his basic qualification — 10+2 from the Aeronautical Society of India — was not recognized. Chakravarthy moved the AP High Court, but was told the courts could do little about a DGCA policy decision.

Undeterred, the lad went back to school, passed the class 12 exam all over again and applied for a CPL once again, in 2006. But the DGCA turned him down again saying he had not flown 200 hours in the last five years. (By 2006, the criteria had changed from 250 flying hours to 200).

In effect, if Chakravarthy wanted to pursue his dream against all odds, he would have to start afresh and painfully clock up flying hours, each of which now costs Rs 10,000. He would have to invest another Rs 20 lakh.

Despite hurdles, Chakravarthy, did not give up hope overall but in the short term, he decided to drive a taxi to feed his family and pay off the bank loan. In the meantime, he pleaded with the DGCA to exempt him from the mandatory 200 flying hours.

Chakravarthy says he could, at best, meet requirements for CPL renewal, that is 25 hours of flying, which includes 15 hours of solo, four hours of cross country covering 250 nautical miles, five night landings, five hours of instrument flying and tripple test or day, night and instrument test. “It will take me six more months. But to ask for a repeat of entire flying hours is beyond my means,” he says.

Now, he has managed to persuade Congress Working Committee Member Oscar Fernandes to write to civil aviation minister Praful Patel, requesting that his case to be dealt with on humanitarian grounds rather than within rule-bound parameters.

Chakravarthy, who has presented his case afresh to the DGCA, now waits to hear the decision that could mean he either gets to the cockpit or behind his taxi’s steering wheel.

Katona’s ‘hubby wants to leak couple’s sex tape on net to ease cash crisis’

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Already troubled Kerry Katona fears getting into more mess as hubby Mark Croft wants to sell off a steamy sex tape of the couple to alleviate their cash crunch, it has emerged.

Pals say Katona’s former taxi driver hubby tried to sell the idea to her, which has made the ex-Atomic Kitten even more anxious about losing the custody of her two daughters, Molly and Lilly Sue, to their father and divorced hubby Brian Nicholas McFadden.

“Mark’s not given up hope by any means. He thinks it’s a guaranteed earner, which could make them anything up to half-a-million,” a pal was quoted by the Daily Star, as saying.

Friends say the 39-year old Croft has no plans to change his mind and he intends to use the cash from the tape’s sale to fund his extravagant lifestyle.

A friend said: “Mark thinks he knows it all and is determined to take over every aspect of Kerry’s life. He thinks that a sex tape of them, which somehow found its way on to the internet, would earn them a lot of cash – at least 250,000 pounds and possibly as much as 500,000 pounds.

“Mark is absolutely obsessed with money and has told Kerry that it could be a life-saver for them, but at the moment she’s having nothing to do with it.

“She’s scared stiff of anything so tacky being the last stop in her attempts to hold on to her two little girls by Brian McFadden.” (ANI)

Stay-at-home parents ‘most stressed workers’

London, September 12 (ANI): Parents who stay at home and look after the household are the most stressed out, a new UK study claims.

According to a research conducted by Mindlab Organisation, mothers or fathers who do household chores are more frazzled than those with traditionally high-pressure jobs, like city trading, teaching or nursing.

Stress levels were investigated in British adults as per their “work” roles – stay-at-home parents, taxi drivers, teachers, nurses and city dealers.

The conclusion was reached by measuring levels of the stress hormone cortisol throughout an average working day.

It was found that stay-at-home parents proved to be the most under pressure. Nurses ranked second in the list, followed by the traders, then teachers and finally, taxi drivers.

A bio-monitoring equipment was used to measure and record the heart rate and skin conductance.

The participants were connected to the equipment and tested over a seven-hour period.

Also, samples of saliva were taken at crucial junctures during the day to measure cortisol, which is a direct indicator of stress.

“The key here is the degree of control each of these professionals feel able to exercise over their lives,” the Daily Express quoted Dr David Lewis, who was part of the research, as saying.

“Stay-at-home parents receive little or no specific training and are furthermore typically isolated from other adults for much of the day,” he added.

Psychologist Jenni Trent Hughes said: “The answer is simply to be selfish and take some time out. After 21 years of running around after the family, pets, supermarket and the house, women have earned it.

“If you’re not taking care of your- self then how can you properly take care of anyone else?

“If you’re ratty or short-tempered, tired or at your wits’ end how can you possibly be the best you can be for your partner, children, family and last but definitely not least yourself?” (ANI)

Malaysian envoy asks countrymen to take care on Indian roads

New Delhi, Sep 2 (ANI): Malaysian High Commissioner to India has advised his fellow countrymen to take extra precaution as the spate of fatal Indian road accidents involving them is worrying.

High Commissioner Tan Seng Sung said recent accidents, where Malaysians lost their lives showed that travellers need to be more careful when planning their travel to India.

“They must hire proper drivers and have their travel insurance ready when making trips to India,” Tan said on the sidelines of Malaysia’s 52nd National Day celebration in Delhi on Monday.

Over 200 guests, including foreign diplomats, Indian officials and Malaysians attended the event hosted by the High Commission at a hotel here.

The envoy’s comments came in the wake of a recent accident in Leh, in the Kashmir region, where three Malaysian women were killed while another is still missing after their vehicle toppled into a ravine.

Another woman, who is part of the Malaysian entourage on the trip suffered severe injuries and is still recuperating in a hospital here, The NST Online reported.

In April this year, a van ferrying a group of Malaysian pilgrims to Haridwar, a Hindu holy site, collided with another vehicle, killing the tour guide and his assistant.

Two Malaysian women, who were injured in that accident, later died in a hospital in Delhi.

A month later, two sisters, one a journalist of the New Straits Times, were badly injured when the taxi they hired rammed into an oncoming car. (ANI)

Musician reunites with £300K violin forgotten in NY cab through GPS!

London, August 19 (ANI): A musician has GPS technology to thank for a reunion with his 300,000-pound violin that he forgot in a New York cab.

Hahn-Bin left the 18th century instrument in a yellow taxi while heading back home from a concert.

The absent-minded 22-year-old later realised his loss after reaching his Chinatown apartment and called the city’s taxi authorities and the police.

“Losing an instrument is a greatest fear, even more than making a mistake on stage,” the Telegraph quoted Hahn-Bin as saying.

The taxi dispatcher located the cab with ease since all yellow taxis are fitted with GPS trackers.

Overnight records showed that the musician had been dropped off by Dalbir Singh, before the driver finished his shift and headed home to New Jersey, where the violin was safely waiting. (ANI)

Swine flu-scared people take to facemasks

Kolkata, Aug 19 (ANI): People in Kolkata are taking precautions against swine flu or H1N1 influenza as the number of cases is on rise in the country.

Residents are wearing facemasks or covering their faces, especially at crowded places like airports, taxi stands and hospitals as a precautionary measure.

“I am wearing this mask as a precaution because these days we are hearing about swine flu, which is unfortunate. I am coming from Bangalore and Mysore where four cases have been reported. So I have been advised that it’s better to go like this. Prevention is better than cure,” said Mayank Agarwal, a passenger.

Locals with swine flu symptoms are also alert and are getting themselves medically checked.

“My daughter is seven years old. Doctor is treating her as she has been suffering from fever for four days. My husband has just returned from Singapore though he is not affected with swine flu but since it is spreading doctor advised me to come to the hospital for check up. That’s why I am here,” said Sohini Chakrabarty.

Meanwhile, over a hundred school children along with representatives of medical association took out a rally in Madhya Pradesh that has registered at least 66 suspected swine flu cases.

The children skated on the streets of Jabalpur, holding placards and spreading awareness about the disease.

“We want to spread awareness that swine flu is not a complicated disease. It’s a very simple disease. In order to spread awareness about the disease we organised this rally,” said Anusha Saraf, a schoolgirl.

India recorded its first H1N1 case in Hyderabad in May and since then the virus has spread across the country with dozens of cases from Pune city. The latest death toll in India is 29. (ANI)

Insurance mooted to cover losses incurred by tourism sector in Kashmir

Srinagar, Aug 18 (ANI): The tourism sector of Jammu and Kashmir has welcomed the initiative of the state government to device an insurance scheme to those involved in tourism trade. This sector will be compensated for the losses borne by them, if any.

The tourism industry in the region was affected due to militancy and the frequent shutdown calls given by separatist factions.

The new insurance proposal seeks to underwrite the losses incurred by the hospitality industry as well as travel agents and tour operators.

“This policy will benefit everyone right from taxi drivers, pony owners and the helping hands in horse riding and all associated with this sector who deal directly with the state. This will enable the people in the tourism industry to avail this opportunity,” said Farooq Shah, Director of Tourism, Jammu and Kashmir.

This is for the first time that an insurance scheme exclusively for the tourism segment has been initiated.

This proposal has been welcomed by the tourism sector.

“If the tourism season is for six months or ninety days and our business runs successfully for 45 days, then we can get our returns for the rest 45 days by the insurance company. It is a token gift from the government of Jammu and Kashmir,” Said Abdul Razzak, an owner of a Shikara. The government is trying to meet the demands of the travel and tourism trade. The private sector should come forward and invest in the tourism sector, as tourism is the gift of nature to us. Also, the tourism is the only industry which can grow and progress in this state,” said Muhammad Azim Toman, President, Houseboat Owners Association, Srinagar.

Kashmir has been among the top Asian tourism destinations though it has been suffering major slow down since out break of militancy in the region in 1989.

However, over the past couple of years, visitors have started returning to the pristine and majestic region as violence has declined after India and Pakistan started a slow-moving peace process in 2004. (ANI)

Strike is an injustice to common people: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, July 2 (ANI): As the strike call given by the hardline faction of the separatist Hurriyat Conference continued for the third consecutive day in Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed it a grave injustice to the common people whose earnings have been seriously affected.

“The strike does not affect my earnings, it affects the poor people who earn in these two to three months and can use it for the rest of the year, be it houseboat owners, taxi drivers. It is pure injustice for these people,” Abdullah said.

“The people who call for strikes should understand this. If they want to punish the government they should look for other ways to do so. They are punishing common Kashmiris, which I believe is grave injustice,” he added.

Because of the strike during the tourist season, daily wage earners like labourers, taxi drivers, houseboat owners and shopkeepers are suffering the most.

“It is the labour class that is suffering. For employees, they take their salary by the end of the month, but it is the labourers who suffer,” said Reyaz Ahmad, a resident.

The strike was called against the killing of two civilians when police opened fire to quell protests in Baramulla district on Monday.

The protests erupted over the alleged misbehavior of policeman with a woman. (ANI)
