Larry King’s wife attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription drugs

London, June 11 (ANI): Talk show host Larry King’s wife has been revealed to have attempted suicide late last month by overdosing on prescription drugs as she battled depression.

According to TMZ.com, an officer with the Provo, Utah police reported entering Shawn King’s residence on May 2, going to a bedroom where paramedics were treating her and seeing “multiple pill bottles, all of which were empty on the bed”.

The police report noted “scriptures, a purse, other various books” and a letter which appeared to be a note left by the victim.

“It is unknown whose writing this letter was in, however wording on the letter led me to believe that (King) had intentionally taken the quantity of pills,” the Telegraph quoted the officer as writing in the report, which is labelled “attempted suicide”.

The report said labels on the bottles indicated multiple drugs including Ambien, Klonopin and Clonazepam, and many of them were empty.

One witness told police that Shawn King “is always depressed, but she had not mentioned anything that she would want to hurt herself or take her own life”. (ANI)

Ben Stiller reveals he could be suffering from Lyme disease

London, Mar 25 (ANI): Actor Ben Stiller has revealed that he could have contracted Lyme disease after he badly injured his knee during a recent trip to Mozambique.

Stiller, 44, who had travelled to the African country last month as part of his charity work, was left limping after he fell into a muddy ditch while walking through a village.

His left knee became inflamed and he visited a number of doctors to diagnose the problem, but almost a month later, medics have yet to determine the cause of his ailment, despite running numerous tests.

“I was in Africa about three and half weeks ago and I stepped in a ditch in Mozambique. It was a hidden ditch, I was in a village and it was full of muddy water and I stepped in it and hyper extended my knee,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

“It got stiff and worse and worse. It was painful, I couldn”t really move it too much.

“I came back to New York, went to a doctor here, they did an MRI (scan), discovered some arthritic elements. It got worse, then I went back home to Los Angeles and went to see another doctor, apparently the best knee guy.

“He looked at it and said, ”You got a lot of fluid there, we gotta drain some of the blood out.” So he stuck a needle in and sucked out the blood.

“He had this look in his eye and was like, ”This isn”t blood”. I said to him, ”What is it?” and he said, ”I don”t know”. So they”ve been doing cultures (tests) on it, they took two more samples.

“They think it might have gotten infected, they”re not sure,” he explained.

Stiller”s mystery injury was so painful it almost forced him to pull out of a scheduled interview with U.S. TV talk show host David Letterman on March 23.

But, after more examinations and tests, Stiller”s doctors now believe he may have contracted Lyme disease, an easily treatable inflammatory illness spread through a tick bite, which is common on the East Coast of the U.S.

Stiller admits he”s been experiencing “little night sweats” as a result of the condition, but he”s glad his medical mystery is almost solved – because it means he won”t have to undergo invasive surgery.

“It”s actually improved so much in the last 24 hours, but I almost couldn”t come (to New York), I didn”t get the go ahead (from doctors)… He (his doctor) sent me to a rheumatologist, an infectious rare disease guy, so they do all these tests,” he tells Letterman.

“I got this call at like two o”clock in the afternoon (on Monday). The guy said, ”Have you ever had Lyme disease?” I said, ”No, but I was on the East Coast last summer and my son had Lyme disease”.

“And he said, ”Well, it”s looking like it might be Lyme disease”.

“He was saying if it wasn”t, I”d have to have an orthoscopic procedure, so if it is Lyme disease, I won”t have to have the procedure done, which is great,” he added. (ANI)

Irwins quit movie promo tour

Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin are flying from America to Australia to be with the crocodile hunting family’s patriarch.

Bob Irwin, 69, suffered a serious heart attack at his home near Kingaroy on Sunday.

He is currently in a stable condition in a private Brisbane hospital.

Granddaughter Bindi, 11, has been in the US promoting her feature film debut, Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove.

“They are on their way [home],” the Irwins’ longtime manager, John Stainton, said.

Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove is the fourth instalment of the film franchise. It is being released direct to DVD.

Bindi plays Kirra, a girl sent to live with her grandfather (Beau Bridges) at his dilapidated sea animal park in South Africa.

Kirra discovers an injured baby orca trapped in a lagoon and works tirelessly to rehabilitate it so it can be released into the wild rather than to a rival theme park.

During an interview with talk show host Bonnie Hunt, Bindi said 68-year-old Bridges, who was also a child star, took her under his wing and taught her about acting.

“Before we started filming I was a bit nervous about learning my lines and things like that, but he was telling me not to worry about it and just think about it like it was a conversation,” she said.

Oprah Winfrey told to defend defamation case

London, Mar 17 (ANI): Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has been told by a US judge she must defend a defamation case filed against her by the former headmistress of her girls’ school in South Africa.

Judge Eduardo Robreno refused to dismiss the legal action on March 15, saying Nomvuho Mzamane had enough evidence to pursue her claim that Winfrey, 56, allegedly made remarks about her following sex abuse complaints at the school, reports the BBC.

The abuse emerged in 2007, when one girl complained she had been fondled while others reported being sworn at, grabbed by the neck, beaten or thrown against a wall.

A former matron at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, which was opened in Johannesburg in 2007 at a cost of 40 million dollars, was later charged with abusing six students.

Mzamane claims that Winfrey made statements to the press and parents at the time, suggesting she was not trustworthy.

Winfrey’s lawyers argued that the remarks reflected her opinions, but the judge ruled they were potentially defamatory as they ascribed “conduct which would render her [Mzamane] unfit for her profession as an educator”.

The trial is now set for March 29 in Philadelphia.

Winfrey pledged to build the academy after a meeting with former South African President Nelson Mandela in 2002, and personally interviewed many of the South African girls from low-income families who applied for the initial 150 places at the school. (ANI)

MJ’s dermatologist denies office raid reports

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s dermatologist Arnold Klein has denied all reports which claim his Beverly Hills office was raided by cops.

Klein’s attorney Garo Ghazarian said police only wanted to “corroborate” existing evidence.

The Daily Express quoted him as telling talk show host Larry King: “Yes, I was there (when the coroner searched Klein’s office). They were not looking for anything new except they were looking to corroborate what had already been provided to them by cross-referencing reports with certain logs that is standard in the industry.”

Ghazarian also added that his client wasn’t even questioned by the police.

Investigators from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office visited Klein’s practice on Wednesday with a search warrant – a week after announcing Jackson’s autopsy report had been completed.

The Thriller icon died on 25 June (09) after suffering a cardiac arrest in his Holmby Hills, California home. (ANI)

Winfrey sues dietary supplement peddlers over trademark-infringement

Chicago, Aug 21 (ANI): Talk show host Oprah Winfrey has filed a federal trademark-infringement suit against 40 peddlers of dietary supplements.

Winfrey, 55, alleges that Internet marketers are using her name without permission, and filed the suit through her corporate vehicle, Harpo Inc. on August 19.

Her people are said to have aided an investigation by Illinois Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan that led to three lawsuits against makers and marketers of dietary supplements made from acai berries.

During her shows, Winfrey would feature segments about foods or products that can lead to better health, and the shows often included appearances by Dr. Mehmet Oz.

According to Marc Rachman, an attorney for Harpo, last year, after Oz praised the anti-aging properties of the acai berry, Internet marketers began to sell acai products with implications that Winfrey or Oz had endorsed them.

But, as it turns out, neither has ever sponsored such a product or any other that involved health benefits.

“The subject is discussed on the show, then the scams start. It’s brazen,” the Chicago Tribune quoted Rachman as saying.

Rachman revealed that of all the products, the acai berry had been the main target, and Winfrey’s Web site had had to field more than 2,000 complaints related to it.

Some involve viewers who mistakenly believed that a product was actually endorsed by Oz or Winfrey; while others are from consumers who felt they’d been defrauded. (ANI)
