405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

Oz speed-reader to demystify Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol 2hrs after release

Melbourne, September 14 (ANI): Publishers of Dan Brown’s much-anticipated book, ‘The Lost Symbol,’ will host speed reading competition during its launch in Australia.

The person who ends reading the book fastest will be provided with an opportunity to give its first review.

Speculations are high on the closely-guarded plot, which is believed to focus on the Freemasons.

Publisher Random House will provide a copy of the book at the State Library of NSW the moment it is released.

It is expected that the first person should complete reading in two hours.

After which the reader will give a review to public and press.

“Millions of Australians have enjoyed the pure adrenalin thrill of Dan Brown’s novels, coupled with their fascinating historical insights,” News.com.au quoted Margie Seale, managing director of Random House Australia, as saying in a statement.

Congress screens aspiring candidates for polls in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Sep 12 (ANI): Congress party has begun shortlisting candidates aspiring for party’s nomination for the October 13 assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Congress party, which is running a coalition government with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra for the second term in a row, is yet to sort out hiccups on seat sharing with its ally.

As the days for nominations to open on September 18 draws close, state Congress party leaders went in a huddle in Mumbai to screen aspirants seeking ‘ticket’ to contest polls on the party symbol.

“I have given my profile, I have told about major problems in our area including drinking water and irrigation and people do not get benefited from the policies of the government,” said Anil Chandra Kumar Gupta, an aspirant from Tiroda seat of Gondia district.

Congress party, which also heads the central coalition, is on a high after its good performance in the April-May general elections. (ANI)

Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox to compete for Barbarella role

London, Aug 31 (ANI): In what could be the greatest showdown ever for the ultimate sex symbol tag, hotties Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox will audition for the role of Barbarella in a remake of the 1968 sci-fi classic of the same title, it has emerged.

“This will be the first time Angie and Megan have ever faced off for the same role,” the Daily Star quoted a studio insider as saying.

The source added: “Whoever gets the part will become the absolute number one Hollywood sex symbol on the planet.”

The original film had turned Jane Fonda into an international sex symbol overnight.

Now, whoever grabs the role will see herself as latex-suited blonde, and thigh-high-booted mercenary of the future.

Both Jolie and Fox have spoken about being compared to each other in the past.olie once said: “If it’s a comparison of looks, she can be the most beautiful but I have so much more going on.”

‘Sex symbol’ tag hurts me, says Megan Fox

London, Aug 24 (ANI): Movie siren Megan Fox says that she gets hurt every time she is called a sex symbol.

She told the Daily Star Sunday: “The attention, that other people are telling you that you are beautiful, only feeds insecurities and sort of makes it unbearable.”

The Transformers beauty also admitted that she regularly smokes cannabis and has therapy to help her beat the sex demons that have tormented her since childhood.

Fox blames her ultra-strict religious upbringing for her deep insecurities.

She said: “I was raised Pentecostal, which is one of the most extreme denominations of Christianity that exists. Everything is evil and wrong and will send you to hell.

“So I had lots of talks about how sex was evil, sex was bad.”

However, she said that her role in her new film Jennifer’s Body had helped. She plays a teen who becomes a man-eater after being possessed by a sex-mad spirit.

She admitted: “I get to exorcise my demons through her. She has really deep, unfriendly insecurities which I can relate to.”

And when asked how she escapes her torment at home, she said: “I usually smoke weed and watch Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood.” (ANI)

Pitt brands Cruise’s ‘Inglourious Basterds’ a ‘ridiculous movie’

Washington, August 22 (ANI): Brad Pitt has branded Tom Cruise’s new Nazi flick ‘Inglourious Basterds’ “ridiculous”.

“The second World War could still deliver more stories and films, but I believe that Quentin (Tarantino, director) put a cover on that pot. With Basterds, everything than can be said to this genre has been said,” People magazine quoted Pitt as having told the German magazine Stern.

“The film destroys every symbol. The work is done, end of story,” the actor said.

Expressing his opinion about another WWII Hitler assassination movie with a famous Hollywood star, Pitt said there was no comparison.

Reacting to ‘Inglourious Basterds’, which is about a real plot to kill Hitler, Pitt simply said: “It was a ridiculous movie.”

He even said that what movie he does find note-worthy – even life-changing – Saturday Night Fever.

“When I was a teenager, I saw Saturday Night Fever at our drive-in, but it wasn’t the dancing that electrified me. It was the life and culture in Brooklyn. I’m from Missouri, the southern part of the Midwest in the U.S., and I never heard families talk that way to each other. From that point on, I wanted out to see more of the country and of life,” he said. (ANI)

Now, Sikhs accuse BBC’s Asian network of religious bias

London, Aug.20 (ANI): The BBC’s Asian Network is at the center of a race row after Sikhs accused the digital radio station of being insensitive towards their religion.

The BBC were forced to remove a show from their website after Adil Ray, a popular Muslim presenter, received threats from Sikh listeners who accused him of denigrating one of their religious symbols, The Telegraph reports.

The row centres around a show broadcast earlier this month in which Ray discussed a Punjabi music concert in Canada where police had banned a number of Sikhs who refused to remove their “kirpan” dagger. number of listeners believed that Ray had been disparaging about whether Sikhs really needed to carry their kirpan – a ceremonial symbol that baptised Sikhs are expected to wear at all times – and began making complaints and threats against him.

The Birmingham-based network has strongly denied the accusations or any suggestion that Ray meant to mock Sikhism.

The row has nonetheless raised fresh questions over whether the digital network, which was set up eight years ago after the BBC’s then director general Greg Dyke described the corporation as “hideously white”, is serving its Asian listeners.

Last year, Labour peer Lord Ahmed accused the network of being biased against Muslims in favour of Sikhs and Hindus, although an internal investigation by the BBC later exonerated it.

The Sikh Media Monitoring Group has written to the BBC asking for a full transcript of Adil Ray’s show and accused the station of being insensitive towards Sikh listeners. (ANI)

Murdered Iranian woman’s killer identified

Tehran, Aug.20 (ANI): The man accused of killing Iranian woman protester Neda Soltan during an opposition rally against the June 20 presidential result, has been identified as Abbas Kargar Javid, a pro-government militiaman.

The identification challenges the Iranian regime’s claim that foreign agents shot the young woman, who became a global symbol of resistance to the Government of President Ahmadinejad.

One picture appears on Javid’s Basij identification card, which was taken off him by the crowd that stopped him briefly when he fled the murder scene during a massive demonstration against electoral fraud on June 20.

Photographs of that card and another that was issued by the Interior Ministry have been posted on the Internet, and the doctor who tried to save Soltan as she lay dying on a Tehran pavement has confirmed that they show the man who was stopped, reports The Times.

“I can testify for certain that it is the same person,” Dr. Arash Hejazi told The Times.

Dr Hejazi said that he had checked with others who witnessed Javid’s detention and they, too, had confirmed that it was the same man.

The regime has put blame for Ms Soltan’s murder on fellow demonstrators, the CIA, hostile foreign governments including Britain, and even the BBC.

Dr Hejazi, a student at Oxford Brookes University, had returned to Iran for a business trip after the June 12 election but he fled after featuring prominently in the video of Soltan’s last moments. (ANI)

Defence Minister Antony to visit Maldives

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): Defence Minister AK Antony will begin a three-day official visit to Maldives from tomorrow.

He will be leading a high-level delegation comprising Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, DG Armed Forces Medical Services Lt Gen NK Parmar, DG Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anil Chopra and Deputy Chief of Navy Staff Vice Admiral DK Joshi.

Shortly after his arrival at the Maldivian capital, Male’, Antony will call on President Mohammed Nasheed.

He will hold talks with the top leadership of the government and the Maldives National Defence Force.

The Minister will also have bilateral discussions with his counterpart Ameen Faisal on ways of expanding defence cooperation between the two countries.

He is also scheduled to attend the closing session of the India- Maldives Friendship function besides paying a visit to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, the most visible symbol of Indo-Maldives cooperation and friendship.

The 200-bed general and speciality hospital has over the years provided Maldives greater self-reliance in the field of medical care.

Antony returns home on August 22.

India and Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial links steeped in antiquity and enjoy close, cordial and multi-dimensional relations.

India was among the first to recognize Maldives after Independence in 1965 and to establish diplomatic relations with the country.

India’s prompt assistance during the 1988 coup attempt, which diffused the crisis, represents a watershed in India-Maldives relations.

India’s quick response and prompt assistance in their hour of need and immediate withdrawal of the troops when they were no longer required assuaged fears of any Indian dominance.

More recently, when the tsunami waves hit Maldives on December 26, 2004, India was the first country to rush relief and aid to Maldives. In April 2006, India gifted a fast attack craft, INS Tillanchang, to Maldives. (ANI)

Archaeologists discover world’s oldest tree sign in Prague

Prague (Czech Republic), August 13 (ANI): Archaeologists have uncovered a unique 1000-year-old mark engraved into an oak tree near Celakovice in Prague, Czech Republic, which is probably the oldest preserved sign of this kind in the world.

According to a report in the Prague Monitor, the real meaning of the 10-cm star-shaped mark on the oak trunk is not certain. Experts say it may have marked the territory or serve some iconic purposes.

This find is rare as so old engraved signs were not previously mapped and they are not systematically searched for either, said archaeologist Jana Marikova from the Academy of Sciences (AV)’s Archaeological Institute.

Geologist Radek Mikulas, from the AV’s Geological Institute, found the engraved sign by accident when he was searching for the actual age and state of the old oak trunks that were lifted near Celakovice during sand and gravel strip mining.

The mark was engraved into the trunk after the bark was removed from the spot, and this is why its traces were preserved.

Experts estimate that the oaks were standing near the Labe (Elbe) River between 600-800 A.D. and the engraved symbol must originate from the early Middle Ages.

Archaeologist Dagmar Dreslerova points out that the tradition of engraving signs and ornaments date back to the Palaeolithic Era (Old Stone Age).

However, only engravings made on stone, rocks and exceptionally on bones have been preserved, as wood and other organic material decompose with time.

The first written sources mentioning signs engraved into trees to mark land borders and paths come from antiquity. (ANI)

Watson’s Granger role voted ‘Most Beloved Character in Harry Potter Franchise’

Washington, July 15 (ANI): Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger role has been voted the ‘Most Beloved Character in the Harry Potter Franchise’ in a new poll.

Fans of the wizard tales said that the bushy-haired academic is their favourite member in the Harry Potter gang, reports Contactmusic.

Fans are convinced that the British actress will have the most successful career after the films come to an end in 2011.

According to 51 per cent of the fans, Watson would enjoy a more lucrative future than her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, with 39 per cent insisting she’d become a sex symbol.

Prime Minister arrives in Paris

Paris, July 14 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in Paris late on Monday night to participate in the National Day celebrations of the Republic of France.

Dr. Singh was received by French Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie and Ambassador of France to India Bonnafont. He was presented a Guard of Honour by the republican guards. National anthem of both the countries were also played.

Dr. Singh, who will be the Chief Guest of Honour at France’s National Day celebrations on Tuesday, said: “It’s a great honour and a great privilege for me to be in this beautiful country on France’s National Day.

I am very grateful to President Nicolas Sarkozy for giving me this rare honour. India and France are partners in development. We have very good relations with France. Its my ambition to give a further push to our strategic partnership.”

The Prime Minister is the first Indian leader to be bestowed this honour, as France does not have a tradition of inviting foreign heads of state to be chief guests at their Bastille Day or National Day celebrations.

This day commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, which was then seen as a symbol of a rising modern nation.

He will witness the contingent of 400 soldiers from the Indian Army, Navy and Air force march down the Champs-Elysees Avenue along with French infantry troops and motorised troops.

This is the for the first time that all the three services – Army, Navy and Air Force will taking part in the National Day celebrations of another country.

Among the 400 personnel, 300 would be part of the marching contingent, while the rest are from the respective bands.

A prominent feature of the band contingent will be the drummers and bagpipers who would be playing Indian martial music.

Inviting friendly nations to send their troops to participate the Bastille Day parade is a recent phenomenon.

In 2004, during the centenary of the Entente Cordiale, British troops comprising of Grenadier Guards, the Cavalry Regiment and Royal Marines and Royal Horse Artillery, led the parade in Paris for the first time.

The Indian armed forces participation will mark the commemoration of Indian army’s association with its French counterpart during the two World Wars.

The parade itself is a gala event held at what can best be described as the Rajpath of Paris. It begins from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde.

The number of contingents participating in the parade are not as many as seen in the Republic Day parade every January 26 in New Delhi.

While the loudest applause in Delhi is reserved for the ex-servicemen contingent, at the Bastille Day parade it is the fireservice men who get the loudest applause. By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Daniel Radcliffe, a famous actor has nothing but praise for fellow British heartthrob Robert Pattinson, claiming the “Twilight” leading actor as “a sex symbol” and “a genuine sexy guy.”

Younger actors started improving. A franchise like this relies heavily on the young cast members, and Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Daniel and Rupert Grint have all grown into solid talents. For that matter, many of the secondary student actors have shown a reliability that I woudn’t have expected.

The Harry Potter depicter then jokingly told US Weekly at the New York City premiere of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” on Thursday, July 9, “He’s got the height. If girls like short and nerdy, then I’m a sex symbol!”

Da Vinci follow-up ‘The Last Symbol’ will be promoted with a series of puzzles

London, July 9 (ANI): Publishers of Dan Brown’s new novel ‘The Last Symbol’ will be launching a series of puzzles, codes, and teasers on social networking sites like Facebook, as a part of their promotional campaign.

The book, which features Harvard Professor Robert Langdon for a third time, is due for release in September.

The storyline has still been kept under wraps, but it is believed to focus on freemasonry, with the lost symbol of the title a reference to a ciphered pictogram in an ancient book called The Key of Solomon.

The publishers have also revealed six million copies of the book will be printed on its first run, reports the BBC.

Brown had said that writing the new novel was “a strange and wonderful journey”. (ANI)

Officials in Chinese city banned from having extramarital affairs

Beijing, July 8 (ANI): Officials in Sichuan province’s Meishan city have been banned from taking lovers outside marriage, as well as sleeping during meetings.

According to the China Daily, a guideline titled “Behavior Standards for Officials of Meishan After Eight Hours of Work” was released with four other directions designed to strengthen discipline among county-level or higher officials in Meishan.

“Officials should persist in being upright and honest after work hours, should not have too close relations with people that are interest related, and should not have abnormal relations with people of the opposite sex,” it reads.

Some officials in China have been notorious for having numerous lovers.

According to statistics by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, 90 percent of provincial or ministry level officials found guilty of corruption have had lovers.

Among the notorious adulterers is Xu Qiyao, former director of the construction bureau of Jiangsu province, who was reported to have had 146 lovers during his official term.

He is still referred as “the one who had the most lovers” on the Internet. He was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in 2001 for taking bribes.

Jin Weizhi, who had 13 lovers when he was general manager of the State-owned Nanjing Dairy Products Company in Jiangsu province, once said that he thought it was common among officials to have lovers as “how many women you might have depends on how powerful you are” and “they are a symbol of your status, or others will look down upon you.”

Yang Hongshan, professor of public administration school of Renmin University of China in Beijing, said the practice of extramarital affairs reveals problems with the country’s supervisory system.

Other rules in Meishan’s new regulations bans officials from sleeping or talking during meetings. They are also banned from being late or absent from meetings without permission and taking phone calls in meetings.

If an official is found to have broken the rules more than once, the government will tell local media and the person will be fined 1,000 Yuan (146 dollars). For those who break the rules more than twice, the official’s department will be disqualified from yearly evaluation, an activity to reward departments with evaluations. (ANI)

Madoff hires prison consultant to help him find best possible jail

London, July 5 (ANI): Bernard Madoff has hired a veteran prison consultant to help him to find the best possible jail in which to serve his 150-year sentence for Wall Street’s biggest fraud.

After his sentencing this week Madoff, now Prisoner No 1727-054, met Herb Hoelter, of the National Centre for Institutions and Alternatives, whose previous clients include the jailed Sotheby’s chairman Alfred Taubman and the financiers Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky.

The draconian maximum sentence imposed by the judge means that Madoff, 71, will be assigned to a tougher category of prison than most white-collar criminals, The Times reported.

He could be forced to mingle with murderers, rapists, drug-dealers and white supremacist gangs with a hatred of Jews. Madoff is Jewish.

He could even find himself incarcerated with terrorists in the infamous “Supermax” jail in Florence, Colorado, the paper reported.

“He was incredibly disappointed. He knew he was going to spend the rest of his life in prison. I don’t think that was ever an issue,” Mr Hoelter told The Times. “But it’s patently unfair to cast him as a symbol of all evil.”

Federal convicts are assigned to minimum, low, medium, high-security prison, or even the sole Supermax facility, by the US Bureau of Prisons using a score-card known as Form BP-337 to calculate an inmate’s “Security Point Total”.

A first-time non-violent white-collar criminal convicted in a US federal court would normally qualify for incarceration at a minimum-security “prison camp” with easygoing rules and no perimeter fence.

But the length of Madoff’s jail term means that he has no hope at all of going to one of them.

“Independent of the length of his sentence, he would score out as a minimum-security inmate,” The Times quoted Hoelter, as saying. “But because of the length of his sentence, they apply a ‘public safety factor’ and would never put him in a minimum security facility.” (ANI)

Supreme Court issues notice to UP government on statues issue

New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): A vacation bench of the Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government for allegedly misusing public money to install statues of prominent Dalit leaders like herself, Dr B R Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and the party’s elephant symbol.

The vacation bench heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. The PIL is seeking a stay on the further inauguration of these statues on July 3.

The petitioner has alleged that the multi-crore projects of installing statues are being carried out as part of state policy, which is arbitrary and violates Article 14 of the Constitution.

The PIL also sought the removal of statues of Mayawati and all party symbols from public places.

Mayawati had unveiled 15 statues, which include that of party founder Kanshi Ram and six of herself on June 25.

Delhi-based lawyer Ravi Kanta, who filed the PIL, said every action taken by the Uttar Pradesh Government must be seen to be in the public interest. The arbitrary actions of the State Government must be invalidated, he added.

Mayawati, her party and the state’s Chief Secretary were named respondents in the PIL. (ANI)

Prime Minister sends “Chadar” at Ajmer Sharif shrine

Ajmer, June 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent a “Chadar” or, the holy cloth as his offering at the revered shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti in Ajmer Sharif on Sunday.

Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Prithviraj Chavan and Minister of State Sachin Pilot presented the sacred cloth on Prime Minister’s behalf on the shrine.

Dr. Singh in a message stated that the teachings of the great Khwaja is more relevant in today’s strife torn world.

“He equated feeding the hungry, redressing the aggrieved and helping the distressed, to prayers…the legacy of the great Khwaja is more relevant in today’s strife torn world, than ever before,” said Chavan read out from PM’s message.

The Dargah of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti is hosting the religious fair or “Urs” marking the 797th death anniversary of the Sufi saint that began on Friday (June 26).

“Urs”, as the congregation is called in Urdu, marks the death anniversary of Moin-ud-din Chisti who is popularly called “Garib Nawaz”, or the “messiah of the poor”.

Millions of devotees from all across the world visit the saint’s shrine during the Urs ceremony. The shrine also attracts devotees from Pakistan.

Moin-ud-din Chisti is believed to have been born in 1142 AD. Since his ancestors belonged to a town named Chisti, people began calling him by that name.

Chisti, who preached tolerance and unity of all religions, died in Ajmer where his tomb has become a shrine for millions of people.

In 1236 AD, the saint entered his cell to pray in seclusion for six days, at the end of which he died. Since then Urs has been celebrated for six days every year.

It is believed that praying at the tomb of the saint fulfils a person’s wishes.

Devotees visiting the shrine offer fresh flowers as a symbol of their devotion. Some even go up to the extent of offering large amounts of money and expensive jewels. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi sends ‘chadar’ to sacred Ajmer Sharif shrine

Ajmer, June 27(ANI): Union Ministers Salman Khursheed and Sachin Pilot offered a ‘chadar’ or holy cloth at the revered shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti in Ajmer on the occasion of 797 “Urs”, here on Saturday.

Khursheed and Pilot offered the ‘chadar’ on behalf of United Progressive Alliance Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi at the sacred Ajmer Sharif shrine.

“Everyday she (Sonia Gandhi) is praying for monsoon, in fact all of us are praying for rain. Congress leaders and thousands of other devotees have prayed for rain at this shrine and we hope that by the blessings of Khwaja Sahib (saint Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti) it will rain,” said Salman Khursheed.

Meanwhile, over 300 devotees from Pakistan arrived in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district on Saturday to offer prayers at the sacred Ajmer Sharif shrine.
Devotees urged that both India and Pakistan should maintain good relationship.
“India and Pakistan share a close and friendly relationship and both the countries should maintain this relationship as they are dependent on each other, sometimes problem arises but it should be sorted out and by the grace of God the relationship between both countries is improving,” said Naseer Khan, one of the devotees from Pakistan.

Devotees said that they wanted people of both countries to shed their cynical thinking.
“People should leave their cynical mentality, people of both countries should change their mentality and start living in a peaceful manner which would be good for both the countries,” said Zafar Alam, another devotee from Pakistan.

It is believed that praying at the tomb of the saint fulfils a person’s wishes. Devotees visiting the shrine offer fresh flowers as a symbol of their devotion. (ANI)

Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi seek blessings of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti

New Delhi, June 25 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday sent a “Chadar” (holy cloth) to the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer on the occasion of annual ‘Urs’.

Senior party leaders who would carry the Chadar arrived at Gandhi’s residence and touched the holy cloth, symbolising their participation in the offering.

“Considering the circumstances prevailing in the country, we pray that our country prospers by the blessings of almighty and may harmony and peace reign in our country,” said Haroon Yousuf, Food And Civil Supplies Minister, Delhi Government.

The Urs is observed to mark the death anniversary of the departed saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.

The shrine is a symbol of religious convergence as both Hindus and Muslims throng the shrine in large numbers with the belief that all their wishes would be fulfilled once they offer prayers at the shrine.

This gathering for the Urs is considered to be the second largest congregation of Muslims at one place after Mecca. (ANI)
