2nd tourist in 24hrs suffers irukandji sting

Two tourists have been stung by jellyfish in Broome within the past 24 hours.

The first occurred on a charter boat off Entrance Point on Sunday, with a second tourist stung while swimming between the flags at Cable Beach yesterday afternoon.

Irukandji stings are potentially fatal and more common during the wet season, although they have been known to occur through to late May.

Beach inspector Tim Trew says it is the first recorded sting at Cable Beach in about a year.

“Most people were pretty good – we set off the evacuation alarm on the beach and everyone came out of the water, so that was really good,” he said.

“Before we reopen the beach we’ll do a stinger net to see if there are any more irukandji in the water.

“If that comes up clear then we’ll reopen the beach for swimming.”

Dolphin survivors still on the radar

Tasmania’s wildlife authorities say they are not sure how many dolphins remain in a north-west river, after mass deaths on the weekend.

More than 30 bottle-nose dolphins from a pod of 50 died after beaching themselves on the banks of the Pieman River on Sunday.

Widlife officers returned 12 survivors to the water overnight and four of the mammals swam out to sea.

Another was found dead this morning.

Tests on the dolphin carcasses today have ruled out toxins as the cause of death.

The Parks and Wildlife Service says the dolphins still swimming in the river appear healthy.

They will be monitored again tomorrow.

Stephanie Rice finally celebrating birthday with a bang today

Melbourne, Sep 19 (ANI): Australian swimming beauty Stephanie Rice is all set to celebrate her 21st birthday today-almost two months after her actual birthday-in a grand bash.

The Olympic star had to postpone festivities because of the world champ meet in Rome in July.

But, today, she will start her birthday celebrations at the Marriot Hotel, and roam across town with her gang in a giant luxury Hummer.

The party will swing over to Portside at Hamilton, where she will be cutting her birthday cake, reports the Courier Mail.

The swimmer celebrated her real birthday with a single piece of cake at a family do back on June 17.

According to reports, Rice has sold the rights to cover the bash to New Idea magazine. (ANI)

Broad not keen on taking Flintoff’s place in Test team

London, Sep 8 (ANI): England’s Ashes hero Stuart Broad doesn’t want to replicate all rounder Andrew Flintoff in his life and is not even that keen on taking Flintoff’s place at No.7 in the Test team.

“No one can replace Fred. It is important that I focus on my qualities and don’t try to be someone I’m not,” Broad said.

Despite scoring five fifties in his 22-Test career, two of them in the Ashes, and having a respectable batting average of 31, Broad plays down that side of his game.

“My aim is to become a good No 8. If the top six build a platform that allows me and Graeme Swann to come and play with freedom as we did at the Oval. I just want to be awkward to bowl at,” The Times quoted Broad, as saying.

Flintoff has said that Broad’s batting is good enough to play as a specialist batsman and Geoff Boycott, praising the straight play of Broad, compared him to a young Garry Sobers, saying that Broad could make the same journey as Sobers from tailender.

“I don’t think I can average 40 in Test cricket. That’s a huge ask, even for recognised batsmen,” Broad said.

The modest Nottinghamshire all-rounder really wants is to spend a night in his own bed and maybe hang a shelf or two.

“I bought a house six months ago and I’ve only spent about 20 nights there. When we have finished with these one-day games and the Champions Trophy, all I’m looking forward to is 2-3 weeks at home and a bit of decorating before we go to South Africa.”

Andrew Flintoff is reportedly having six feet mosaics of the Ashes urn installed in the swimming pools, but Broad’s ambition extends no farther than getting house painted.

Nor does he plan to decorate his body, Flintoff-style. “My mum would never let me in the house again if I had a tattoo,” he said. (ANI)

Scientists identify bacterial strains that can clear algal toxins from drinking water

Washington, September 7 (ANI): Researchers at Robert Gordon’s University, Aberdeen, have identified novel bacterial strains capable of neutralizing toxins produced by blue-green algae in drinking water.

Blooms of blue green algae (cyanobacteria) are found in both fresh and salt water throughout the world.

They produce toxins called microcystins which are released into the water and are easily ingested by animals and humans by drinking, swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

Once in the body, the toxins attack liver cells causing acute and chronic poisoning.

Conventional methods for water treatment such as sedimentation, sand filtration, flocculation and chlorination do not remove microcystins.

The researchers at Robert Gordon’s University have identified more than ten bacterial strains capable of metabolizing microcystins, breaking them down into harmless non-toxic materials.

The bacteria, Arthrobacter sp, Brevibacterium sp and Rhodococcus sp were able to break down six commonly occurring microcystins.

Six of the strains were incubated in river water with variants of the toxin to simulate natural conditions. All six strains were able to degrade the microcystins.

“The costs of advanced water purification strategies are beyond most of the world’s population,” said Aakash Welgama, from Robert Gordon’s University.

“Using bacteria to remove microcystins from water provides a reliable, cost-effective purification system, which does not involve any use of harmful chemicals or any other substances harmful to the environment,” he added. (ANI)

Meet the Brit girl who can run and swim after ‘heart transplant was reversed’

London, July 14 (ANI): In a world’s first recovery of its kind, a Brit girl who had her heart transplant operation reversed after her own heart was deemed fit is now healthy enough to play, swim, and run.

Hannah Clark, 16, from Mountain Ash, in South Wales, underwent the innovative surgery as a two year-old, “piggybacking” a new organ onto her own, failing, heart.

The transplanted heart was on top of her own heart to add extra support.

But, after 10 years, she began to have small cancer tumours because of the immuno-suppressant drugs necessary to prevent her heart rejecting the transplant.

Thus, the surgeons decided to detach the transplanted heart, hoping that the original organ might have redeemed itself.

And now, three years later, the teenager has just sat her GCSEs, enjoys swimming and running and has even started a part-time job in a kennel-all of which would have been impossible before her transplant was reversed.

Speaking at an emotionally charged press conference in London, Hannah said that the lesson she had learnt was “just never give up”.

“I would not be here but for the surgeons who operated on me and for the donor, and I would like to thank them,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

Her surgeon, Prof Sir Magdi Yacoub, from Imperial College London, described the operation to reverse the heart transplant as “unique”. (ANI)

According to The Mail, Shelley had disclosed details on Facebook, including the location of the London flat used by the couple and the whereabouts of their three children and of Sir John’s parents.

Senior politicians said that the security lapse raised concerns about John’s ability to take up his post as chief of the Secret Intelligence Service this November, giving him responsibility for Britain’s overseas spying operations.

He said that John was an “outstanding professional”, and denied that the details on the social networking website, which have since been removed, would compromise his career.

“What are you leading the news with that… The fact that there’s a picture that the head of the MI6 goes swimming. Wow that really is exciting,” the Telegraph quoted Miliband as saying.

“It is not a state secret that he wears Speedo swimming trunks, for goodness sake let’s grow up.

“This allegation that there’s great secrets and then you find out it’s about his swimming trunks and the fact that his family’s getting dragged into it.

“He was appointed 10 days ago to be the head of MI6; he’s an outstanding professional who will do a really good job in an outstanding organisation that does a huge amount for this country.

“The newspapers have gone on to Facebook and got pictures of him in his swimming trunks – the fact that you’re leading on it when we’ve got Iran, Afghanistan and the other issues,’ he added.

Darwin’s tradies slam backpackers for making perv remark

Melbourne, Jun 24 (ANI): After being accused of being pervs, workers at the Darwin Waterfront development have shot back with accusations that topless European backpackers deliberately try to grab their attention.

They say that they are being distracted from their work by the backpackers who favour the Waterfront’s new safe swimming beach and recreational lagoon opened in April.

According to them, their progress on the building site has slowed down ever since the public place became a hangout for the scantily clad Europeans.

After British backpacker Penelope Smith, 19, reported that more than a dozen workers stood around and perved on her while she was sunbaking topless, the workers shot back with the attention grabbing answer.

“They ask for it. They come and sit right in front of where the tradies are. They do it topless too – how do they get away with that?” the Northern Territory News quoted a worker as saying.

The worker said that it was a bit rough for the backpackers to complain about being perved on when they were obviously playing up for the crowd.

“They can sunbake anywhere they want but they go right under where all the building is going on,” he said.

“They love it, mate … love it,” he added.

Last week Smith said that she was embarrassed by the tradies watching her as she sunbathed.

“When they have a cigarette break, they all stand around and watch,” she said.

“My friends say it is a compliment – but I am not the type to play it up. But I did look to see if any of them were cute,” she added. (ANI)
