Australia launches anti-doping campaign aimed at young athletes

(Reuters Life!) – A hard-hitting poster showing an athlete injecting a prohibited substance is at the center of a new Australian anti-doping awareness campaign, with the warning “You can never win your reputation back.”

Lifestyle

Australian Sports Minister Kate Ellis Monday launched the campaign aimed at both young, up-and-coming athletes and elite sportsmen and women.

“This confronting poster sends the important message to athletes that doping is never okay and that your reputation, once lost, is something you can never get back,” said Ellis.

“Doping can ruin an athlete’s health but it can be just as damaging for an athlete’s reputation and ultimately has the potential to end careers.”

Australian Olympic and World Champion rower Amber Halliday and Paralympic swimmer and world record holder Matthew Cowdrey are among several athletes named as Campaign Ambassadors.

“I can relate to the pressure young athletes are under while trying to carve out a career in sport,” said Halliday, who has moved into cycling following her rowing career.

“This campaign highlights the fact that no matter how good athletes get, no matter how many races they win or goals they score, it will all come crashing down if they have cheated through doping.”

The “You can never win your reputation back” campaign will run through June and July and encourages Australians to visit the anti-doping website (www.asada.gov.au).

Thorpe considering gold bid in London Olympics

Melbourne, May 3 (ANI): Ace swimmer Ian Thorpe is reportedly considering a bid to win relay gold at the 2012 London Olympics.

Fox News reported that Thorpe, 27, discussed his plans with Australia”s current batch of crack male sprinters – Eamon Sullivan, Andrew Lauterstein, Ashley Callus and Matt Targett – at the Commonwealth Games trials in Sydney last month, allegedly saying: “Let”s get the 4×100 in London.”

His return, if successful, could produce one of Australia”s most stunning victories and cap a fairytale result for the megastar.

It would also herald a new era of endorsements for Thorpe who has admitted he has struggled financially since quitting the pool.

Australia”s most prolific swimmer stepped away from the sport in 2006, but is now believed to be eyeing an Australian team spot in the men”s 4x100m freestyle relay, with hopes of ending his career with a bang rather than a whimper.

For him to be eligible to compete at the London Olympic trials in March 2012, he needs to announce his return to swimming”s world governing body FINA within the next 18 months. (ANI)

Kiwi women’s cricket captain rated among world’s hottest female athletes

Auckland, Apr 27(ANI): New Zealand women’s cricket captain Aimee Watkins has been rated among the world’s 64 hottest female athletes alongside American skier Lindsay Vonn, Aussie swimmer Stephanie Rice and Czech tennis player Nicole Vaidisova.

Watkins admitted the ratings by Yahoo!Xtra came as surprise, as she does not consider herself as one of the world’s sexiest sportswomen.

“I didn’t know anything about it. I’ve seen it now,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Watkins, as saying.

“Mum gave me a call and she was pretty excited and told me to go on and have a look. Since then I’ve had a bit of stick, but oh well. It’s all a bit foreign to me,” she added.

Meanwhile, talking about her team’s preparations for the Twenty20 World Cup, which starts in the West Indies on May 5, Watkins said the White Ferns are confident of a good show after a clean sweep of Australia in this year’s Twenty20 Rosebowl series.

“To beat Aussie 5-0, we’re pretty happy with our Twenty20 form and our plans. We’re pretty clear on what we need to do,” Watkins said.

Swimmer washed out to sea swims home.

On the state’s far north coast a 68 year old man has managed to swim to safety despite being taken two a half kilometres out to sea.

The alarm was first raised by beach walkers at Evans Head around eight o’clock on Wednesday morning.

The walkers spotted a man struggling in a rip, who was then swept along the rock wall at Airforce Beach and out to sea.

An extensive air, sea and land search was unable to find the man.

Around ten o’clock that morning the swimmer walked into the local police station.

According to the police, the 68 year old Israeli tourist had managed to swim to shore further up the beach.

He had returned home unaware he was the reason for the search until he was alerted to the search by his family.

Rice holds off Seebohm

Olympic champion Stephanie Rice reasserted her dominance in the 200 metres individual medley at the Commonwealth Games selection trials in Sydney on Tuesday.

Rice, backing up from finishing fourth behind Blair Evans in the 200m freestyle less than an hour earlier, sealed her spot on the team for New Delhi by clocking 2 minutes and 10.07 seconds to finish ahead of fellow Queenslander Emily Seebohm (2:10.75) and Alicia Coutts (2:11.97).

The 17-year-old Seebohm, who beat Rice in the event at the New South Wales titles last month, went out hard, putting the triple Olympic gold medallist in the unfamiliar position of having to come from behind.

But Rice showed her class in overpowering Seebohm in the final 50m, although she could not help but acknowledge after the race her younger rival was becoming an increasingly dangerous threat.

“0.7 (seconds) is not a big difference and for someone so young, who is always improving, she (Seebohm) has been on my radar for the last two or three years,” she said.

“She has really come through.

“The 200IM is probably going to become one of her main strokes and it is great to have some real depth in the medley swimming in the country.”

Rice, who described her earlier swim in the 200m freestyle as “average”, says she enjoyed having something to catch after dominating so many races in recent years.

“It was nice to sort of play catch up and it was a different race for me, I’m usually further in front at the 100,” she said.

“I think I just stuck to my own race plan. I knew she’d go out hard but I didn’t let it faze me.”

Seebohm’s coach Matt Brown says it is inevitable his swimmer will improve as she matured further.

“She is not a little girl any more,” Brown said.

“You still have to remember, when she first burst on the scene she was 14 and 14-year-old girls can be quite immature and she is only now starting to get a bit of muscular structure to her body.

“The stuff she is doing in the gym is like an adult rather than a kid.”

In other results, the controversial Nick D’Arcy added another national 200m butterfly title to his collection, winning the final in 1:54.61, while rising distance star Robert Hurley triumphed in the 400m with a time of 3:47.67.

In an interview, the swimmer has revealed that she got married to photographer Sacha Brown, 34, on Wakatobi, an archipelago in the Banda Sea off southeastern Indonesia.

“It was absolutely perfect. It was stress-free, and super low-key,” People magazine quoted her as saying.

Phelps should get Olympic gold for marathon love-making, says lapdancer!

London, May 10 (ANI): Michael Phelps has had his fantasies with a pair of strippers, boasted about taking dope and cries a lot after getting drunk – these are some of his secrets spilt by a lapdancer.

Theresa White claimed the Olympic swimming star is far from the all-American boy everyone thinks he is.

The 25-year-old, who first met the champ at a strip club on a drunken night out last November, revealed the gold medallist turned into a cry baby after his controversial marijuana pictures surfaced.

“I saw Michael after the photos were published in February and he got really upset. He turned to me and said, ‘I can’t believe that happened. I’m terrified my career will be over.’ He was almost in tears,” News of the World quoted her as saying.

Theresa further claimed that the star, who was put on a three-month ban following the scandal, indulged in marathon love-making with two beauties at the same time, and even bragged about his dope-smoking exploits.

She said: “He said he liked short girls and I thought that was funny because he’s so tall. At his place we started playing drinking games.

“Two hours later I was pretty drunk and I went up to Michael and said, ‘If you were to have a threesome tonight, who would you like it to be with?’ He told me he’d never had one before but said it would be with me and then pointed at another girl.

“Everybody else stayed put while we went upstairs and jumped into bed. The sex lasted for about three hours. Michael should get another Olympic gold for marathon love-making!”

She continued: “When I ran into another girl called Jen at a party it turned out he was sleeping with both of us. And I’ve heard that there are at least five or six girls he can call on any time to come over and be with him.

“Michael’s not the all-American boy the public thinks he is. I never saw him smoke marijuana but he was into booze-and chewing tobacco. When he’s been drinking that’s usually when he starts crying. He cries a lot.

“And he chews tobacco like a sailor. It’s disgusting. All over his house are plastic bottles that he spits it into.”

The stunner further said the ace swimmer is a complete mummy’s boy and would not go against her to have a future with Theresa. (ANI)

Stephanie Rice named World’s Sexiest Sportswoman

Melbourne, May 03 (ANI): Swimming sensation Stephanie Rice has been named the sexiest sportswoman in the world.

Rice came in at No.30 in FHM magazine’s 100 sexiest women in the world in 2009, pipping Serbian tennis starlet Ana Ivanovic (32) for sport’s top spot.

The men’s mag says Rice has ‘a body honed to perfection’, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Soccer and cricket star Ellyse Perry was placed at No.82 by the magazine’s readers, and Jelena Dokic at 93.

Rice is the best-known swimmer in the world without a personal swimwear sponsor, and would be in a winning position during the world championships in July.

The International Swimming Federation’s newly formed commission assembles in Lausanne next week to decide which hi-tech swimsuits will be legal for the world titles in Rome, after an influx of new brands and new technology destabilised the sport in the past year.

On the advice of her coach Michael Bohl, Rice deliberately refrained from taking the money on offer from the manufacturers to an athlete of her stature.

Bohl believes that she is now in the perfect position to respond to the changing conditions for the world titles. (ANI)

Triple Olympic gold medallist Rice well placed in swimsuit wars

Melbourne, May 2 (ANI): Triple Olympic gold medallist Stephanie Rice is the best known swimmer in the world without a personal swimwear sponsor, and would be in a winning position during the world championships in July.

“I said all along that she didn’t want to pigeonhole herself because we don’t know what the rules will be,” The Australian quoted Bohl, as saying.

“I think Speedo and Arena are both very keen to sign her, but I think signing early would have been crazy. She probably won’t sign a deal now until after the world championships where they will decide what the rules are for 2010,” he added.

Rice tested a range of brands, including Arena, Adidas and Blue Seventy. She set both of her world records in Speedo’s LZR Racer at the Beijing Olympics and will consider all brands before deciding what she will wear in Rome. (ANI)

How swimming can help slimming, by Olympic champ Rebecca Adlington

London, Apr 29 (ANI): Olympic Games champion swimmer Rebecca Adlington has revealed how swimming can help one to stay slim.

Adlington, 20, who swims four miles every morning, is eager to share the benefits of swimming just a few times a week.

“Swimming does everything,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“It tones you up and helps your joints. You don’t feel how much exercise you’re doing but if you do loads of laps you’re starving afterwards. That’s an indication of how much you’ve worked off,” she said.

The ace swimmer started swimming at three and joined a local club in Nottingham at eight, and she has a glowing complexion, an enviable figure with a washboard stomach and no hint of cellulite.

“Swimming will give you a killer figure,” she said.

“If you starve yourself, you look pale, drained and tired. But if you’re sporty you look healthy, have more energy and your skin glows. It also makes you feel more confident.

“So many women are really concerned about weight in terms of looking good but whether you are healthy should be the real concern.

“Being fit is an investment for the future.

“Whatever your goal is, stick to it. If you have three months to lose an inch off your waist write it down.

“Then halfway through you can look at the steps you’ve taken and say ‘Yes, I’m on target, yes, I’m motivated.’

“Set a goal and make it happen!” she added. (ANI)

And hip-hop mogul Jay-Z offered to explain the reason for the ace swimmer’s actions.

“Then you look at someone like Michael Phelps. He’s 23. What’s he gonna do? He’s a kid. He’s going to experiment,” he added. (ANI)

Pleasure cruise ends in tragedy for Indian couple

George Town (Penang), April 15 (IANS) An Indian couple’s pleasure cruise ended in tragedy when the man fell off the ship and his wife dived into the choppy sea in a failed rescue attempt.

Kasturi Shetty, 47, dived off the Star Cruise Virgo Monday to save her husband Noojady Nithyanand, 49, after the latter slipped on the deck and fell into the sea.

‘She is a good swimmer, but her husband is not. That is why she risked her life to save him,’ said Pranhakar Shetty, the husband’s cousin, who was also on the cruise.

Kasturi is still recovering from the trauma.

Her gutsy attempt proved futile as she was swept away from her husband by the undercurrent, New Straits Times reported from the capital of Penang.

Pranhakar said he and the couple left Bangalore last Tuesday for the cruise which set sail from Singapore.

The incident happened at 10.30 a.m. as the ship was headed towards Pulau Kendi.

Noojady lost his footing as he and his wife were strolling on the slippery deck, according to sources.

The husband’s body is yet to be found, the newspaper said.

“Michael was definitely having a good time,” the New York Daily News quoted an eyewitness as saying.

“He was drinking straight from a bottle of Grey Goose, and when the deejay started playing M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes,’ he got up, started dancing like a loon and kept on yelling, ‘Shots!’”
peaking about the couple, the onlooker added: “They wouldn’t stop making out! They were literally sucking face, and not caring that anyone was watching.”

Phelps was later spotted taking a cab and leaving for a friend’s place to “chill” at 2:30 a.m. (ANI)
