Indian cricket team leaves for South Africa

Mumbai, Sept 18 (ANI): The Indian cricket team left for South Africa from here on Friday to participate in the Champions Trophy.

South Africa has been a happing hunting ground for India who was runners-up in the one-day World Cup in 2003 and Twenty20 World Cup champions four years later.

India has received a boost before their Champions Trophy campaign when in-form opener Gautam Gambhir was passed fit to return after injury.

The left-hander has recovered from a groin strain and will travel with the team to South Africa, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Thursday.

India, already without the explosive Virender Sehwag, were sweating on Gambhir’s fitness after the Delhi batsman missed this month’s tri-series in Sri Lanka.

India won the Colombo tournament, also involving New Zealand and the hosts, and went into the prestigious eight-team event as one of the favourites after not having lost a one-day series in the past year.

India has been grouped with defending and world champions Australia, Twenty20 champions Pakistan and former champions West Indies in the preliminary phase.

A young Indian batting unit struggled against short-pitched bowling in this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England.

Ishant Sharma will spearhead the five-man pace attack in the absence of experienced left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, who has been ruled out until the end of the year after undergoing surgery on an injured shoulder. (ANI)

Dust mites indulge in 24hr sex marathons

Sydney, July 10 (ANI): Sydney mattresses are home to thousands of dust mites, who indulge in sex marathons lasting as long as 24 hours, says an expert.

Dr. Matt Colloff, a CSIRO Entomology scientist who has spent 25 years studying mites, has described their bizarre sexual behaviour in his 600-page, 150 dollars book, ‘Dust Mites’, which was launched on July 9.

“You can’t see them and you can’t feel them. But almost every house has them. A lot of Sydney mattresses would have over a million,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Colloff as saying.

Thanks to its warm, moist climate, “Sydney is one of the world’s top 10 dust mite capitals,” he added.

These less than half a millimetre long organisms inhabit beds, carpets, upholstered furniture, clothes, and curtains as they thrive on skin scales that have fallen from their human housemates.

“Their sexual behaviour is absolutely bizarre. They mate back-to-back. The male has a penis shaped liked an old-fashioned coffee-pot spout and locks onto the female with a pair of suckers,” said Colloff.

As the dust mite’s penis is so narrow, compared with its sperm, “the sperm has to travel in single file,’ thus making mating slower than other organisms.

“They remain in that position for 24 hours. She continues on with everyday life and the little male hangs on,” said Colloff.

The mites are often found in beds because the heat of human bodies between the sheets triggers sweating, creating the humidity and warmth the mites crave.

They spend their days “eating and copulating and defecating,” said Colloff. (ANI)

Britain considered dropping millions of poisoned darts on German troops in final stages of WW II

London, June 26 (ANI): During the final stages of the Second World War, Britain considered dropping millions of poisoned darts packed into bombs and released from the air on German troops with the potential to kill or incapacitate anyone within 10,000 sq yds, according to released secret files.

Created by British and Canadian scientists, the designs show three different types of dart. One looks like a fountain pen, the others like a flat penknife. The Singer sewing machine company was even approached to “unwittingly” provide needles for the weapon.

Records show that they were tested on sheep and goats in Canada to establish the effectiveness of dropping the projectiles from high and low altitudes, The Times reported.

Documents released by the National Archives under the Freedom of Information Act include letters and notes collected over four years that demonstrate how close the British Government came to deploying the deadly darts.

Listed as “Top Secret”, it was written by an official from Porton Down, in Salisbury, which was then a government research centre for chemical and biological weapons. Scientists were working on the initiative with their counterparts at Suffield, a similar site in Canada.

The teams explored the most effective poison for the dart, comparing variations of urethane that caused death within 30 minutes with another substance, referred to only as “X” that killed its victim within 24 hours, The Times reported.

Sheep and goats were again used in the tests, showing that the poison induced muscle twitching, salivation, sweating, defecation and retching. The pulse rate slowed and blood pressure fell as the animals collapsed and died.

Death would occur if a dart stayed in the body for more than 50 seconds. If it was taken out sooner, the victim might suffer a temporary collapse. (ANI)

Sweating makes me feel sexy, says Kim Kardashian

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Socialite Kim Kardashian admits that just working up a sweat makes her feel sexy.

Known as one of Hollywood’s sexiest star, Kardashian is nowadays sweating it out to get back to her sultry figure.

“I definitely think that just being confident is being sexy so personally when I’m in shape I feel the sexiest,” Fox News quoted Kardashian as saying.

“It’s always about me getting in the gym and staying with it and staying motivated. It’s also from within; you should feel sexy when you wake up in the morning.

“You’ve just got to stick to your workout regime; so many people start and then stop,” she added.

On being asked which body part does she have a love/hate relationship with, the 28 year old replied, her butt.

“My butt. I’ve really had to tone up, this has taught me so many tricks. I partnered with a trainer, Jennifer Galardi, I’m not an expert so I wanted to learn,” she said.

“I need help like everyone else. It’s been a great challenge for me. (NFL beau Reggie Bush) was there thru the whole process too. We incorporate little things in our workout to do together,” she added. (ANI)

Scorching heat in Agra

Agra, May 6 (ANI): Temperature touching close to 47 degrees has reduced the number of foreigners visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Taj Mahal is on the top of their itinerary for international visitors.

They are seen wearing big hats shielding their faces with cloth.

“First of all it is very hot. Because in Switzerland, right now it is 15 degrees, and I think here it is about 47. We have to drink a lot, because we are sweating. What we usually do is we go sight seeing in the morning or evening but rest of the day is too hot,” said Philip, a tourist from Switzerland.

Cold drinks and ice candies have registered record sales as people throng the outlets to beat the heat.

The residents who rely on tourism for their sustenance are facing problems as less number of tourists is taking a toll on their profession.

“The heat is keeping the tourists away. The work is very less. Earlier also, tourists were keeping away because of the Mumbai terror attacks and also because of recession,” said Kadir Khan, a photographer. (ANI)

It’s scorcher in Delhi, Met office says mercury to rise

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) It is official. The sudden rise in day temperature coupled with dusty winds that has hit the national capital over the past few days is a heat wave condition, the meteorological department declared Monday.

The maximum temperature touched a high of 41.7 degrees Celsius, six notches above what is normal for this time of the year, while the minimum temperature settled at 26.1 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal.

‘The day temperature has increased five to six degrees above normal following hot westerly winds blowing over Delhi. We have declared heat wave condition here,’ a duty officer at the meteorological office told IANS.

People could be seen standing under the shade of trees or buildings to escape the scorching sun as most of the roads in the national capital wore a deserted look. People were seen buying water and cold drinks around offices and in markets to quaffe thirst and beat the heat.

‘In 2006 and 2007 we had the maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius. It was only in April 1942 when the mercury had climbed to 45.6 degrees Celsius in the national capital.’

‘In May and June, we expect the mercury to cross 45 degrees Celsius,’ the official added, ruling out the possibility of rains in the near future.

Residents of Delhi have been reeling under the summer heat from the last three days with day temperature rising several degrees above normal.

‘The heat wave is likely to prevail for two to three days and the temperature is likely to rise further,’ the official said.

The Met Office has forecast that the maximum temperature will cross 42 degrees Celsius Tuesday.

‘My skin was burning as I drove to my office around noon,’ said Aakash Aggarwal, a marketing executive.

Asha Sharma, a housewife said: ‘There was no respite from the heat despite putting on the water cooler and fan. I was sweating so much that I bathed five times but it wasn’t of much use.’

How your favourite celebs stay in shape

Washington, Mar 4 (ANI): Wondering what your favourite stars do to stay in perfect shape despite their busy schedules? Well, here’s your chance to know about the fitness secrets of some of the biggest Hollywood hotties, and what better way to do that than by knowing it from the horse’s mouth itself.

Stars who thronged Leeza Gibbons’ “Night to Make A Difference” Oscar Viewing and After Party, have divulged the details of their workouts, and what they do to stay trim, and here’s what they had to say:

“I do a mixture of cardio and light weights using household items,” Fox News quoted Spice Girl Mel Brown as saying.

Scary Spice further said that she and Victoria Beckham were still BFFs and “talk all the time.”

On the other hand, music legend Olivia Newton-John’s fitness regime was quite exotic.

“I walked the Great Wall of China, it kept me in shape, I did it to raise money for my hospital last year,” she said.

Surprise performer Michael Buble revealed that he just played hockey, and the gym “isn’t his style.”

When it came to Teri Hatcher, she claimed that dieting was something she did not prefer.

And rocker Slash said that all he did to stay in shape was “wake up in the morning.”

However, Muhammad Ali’s ultra-athletic daughter Laila Ali was one girl who reported going to the toughest extreme to stay in shape.

“Sometimes I have to lose 10 lbs the week of a fight and it can be done, it’s a lot of water weight, but it’s taking water pills, getting in the sauna, not eating much, sweating it out, it’s not healthy,” she admitted.

Laila also claimed that she stayed away from alcohol and television.(ANI)

Excessive use of video game consoles can cause ‘skin sores’

London, February 25 (ANI): UK skin specialists have warned that excessive use of video game consoles can lead to a skin disorder, dubbed PlayStation palmar hidradenitis.

Describing this condition in the British Journal of Dermatology, the researchers have revealed that a 12-year-old girl had to attend a Swiss hospital recently after having intensely painful sores on the palms of her hands.

They say that the little girl, who was a regular user of a games console, recovered fully after 10 days of abstinence.

The report further reveals that upon examining the girl, doctors at the Geneva University Hospital concluded that she had a condition known as ‘idiopathic eccrine hidradenitis’-a condition that generally causes red, sore lumps on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

The disorder, previously found on the soles of the feet in children taking part in heavy physical activity like jogging,is thought to be linked to intense sweating.

The patient’s parents revealed that she played video games for several hours a day, and had continued to play even after developing the sores.

The doctors suspected that tight and continuous grasping of the console’shand-grips, repeated pushing of the buttons, and sweating caused by the tension of the game might have triggered the problem.

“This is an interesting discovery and one that the researchers are keen to share with other dermatologists, should they be confronted with similar, unexplained symptoms in a patient,” the BBC quoted Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists, as saying.

“If you’re worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don’t play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating,” Goad added.

A spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd, manufacturers of PlayStation, said: “We do not wish to belittle this research and will study the findings with interest.

This is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature.” (ANI)
