Kyrgyz govt says detains brother of ex-president

July 22 (Reuters) – Kyrgyz authorities said on Thursday they had detained Akhmat Bakiyev, a brother of the ousted president, on suspicion of involvement in violent clashes that killed at least 300 in the Central Asian state last month.

The interim government, which assumed power after President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in an April revolt, said in a statement that Akhmat Bakiyev was detained in the southern city of Jalalabad and would be flown to the capital, Bishkek.

The interim government said he was detained at 10:00 p.m. local time (1600 GMT) on Wednesday after a special operation by its forces.

“During the first interrogation, A. Bakiyev began to confess his involvement in the recent mass disorder in the south of the republic,” the interim government said in the statement. This statement could not immediately be verified independently.

At least 300 people, and possibly hundreds more, were killed in several days of clashes last month between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in southern regions of Kyrgyzstan, a strategic Central Asian state that hosts both U.S. and Russian military air bases.

Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the former president, is in exile in Belarus.

Voters last month approved in a referendum a constitutional change that will make Kyrgyzstan a parliamentary democracy. Elections to parliament are scheduled for October. (Writing by Robin Paxton; Editing by Jon Boyle)

UK Kaupthing probe looks at Deutsche – sources

June 7 (Reuters) – Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) has become embroiled in a UK probe into market manipulation at the time of the collapse of Icelandic bank Kaupthing, sources familiar with the matter said. Britain’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO) said in December it was investigating suspected offences against the Fraud Act prior to Kaupthing’s demise in October 2008.

Financials

The suspicion was that Kaupthing tried to prop up the price of its debt through a number of investment vehicles that the bank was financing itself, the sources said.

“Generally speaking, we’re looking at potential market manipulation,” one of the sources said.

The vehicles were buying Credit Default Swaps (CDS) — instruments used to insure Kaupthing’s debt against default — sending a positive signal to markets in the hope that Kaupthing’s debt prices would rise.

Kaupthing was effectively buying the CDS itself, because it was financing the investment through a loan.

“We are cooperating with the authorities in seeking to establish the facts in this matter,” Deutsche Bank said when asked about the story, which was first reported by UK newspaper The Guardian on Monday.

The German bank declined to provide further detail, while the SFO declined to comment altogether.

Deutsche issued credit-linked notes on behalf of the investment vehicles set up by Kaupthing, one of the sources said. But that did not mean it would necessarily have known about the way the vehicles were financed.

Last month, an Icelandic court ordered the former head of Kaupthing, Hreidar Sigurdsson, to be held for 12 days pending further investigation for suspected embezzlement, market manipulation and forgery. [ID:nLDE6460Q8]

Afridi wants quick and ‘decisive’ action in match fixing controversy

Karachi, May 21 (ANI): Pakistan T20 skipper Shahid Afridi believes that the uncertainty surrounding players’ involvement in match fixing during the winless Australia tour is adversely effecting the team’s focus, and has asked the concerned authorities to take ‘decisive action’ over the issue soon.

Afridi said the controversy is damaging for players keeping in view that they have to compete in some important tournaments in the coming months, including the 2011 World Cup.

“The thing is that there is too much uncertainty because of all those allegations regarding match-fixing. It’s really damaging for the players and the team and I’m really concerned because it comes at a time when we are looking forward to a very busy calendar filled with major assignments, including the all-important World Cup,” The News quoted Afridi, as saying.

“We will be playing in the World Cup just nine months from now and it’s hardly the sort of situation you need to prepare for such a huge event,” he added.

The suspicion of match fixing involving some of the key players, particularly wicket keeper Kamran Akmal spiralled after a video tape was leaked to the media, which showed players and some of the former team officials raising questions over the performance of the team during the disastrous Australia tour while testifying before an inquiry committee set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The leaked footage also showed Afridi raising suspicions of match fixing.

Afridi, however, refused to make any statement about the video, and urged the concerned authorities to resolve the issue as soon as possible so that players could concentrate on the game more.

“I think that for our team to move on, we need to quickly resolve all such controversies. You can’t expect the players to give their best when there are so many allegations thrown at them,” the flamboyant cricketer said. (ANI)

Jharkhand court denies bail to Nirupama Pathak”s mother

Koderma (Jharkhand)/ New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): A local court in Jharkhand”s Koderma District has denied bail to Sudha Pathak, the mother of Delhi based journalist Nirupama Pathak, arrested on suspicion of killing her daughter.

Twenty-three-year-old Nirupama was found dead at her home in Koderma District in mysterious circumstances on April 29.
Sudha was detained on May 3 for her suspected role in the death of her daughter.

“The bail has been rejected as this matter is very sensational. It”s a matter of Section 302, and the girl has been killed under a conspiracy. Accepting the prosecution”s plea and doctors have also said that it”s a murder case, said Rizwan, police counsel.

“On this basis taking a decision in favour of the prosecution the request for bail has been denied,” he added.
Meanwhile, dozens held a silent march in New Delhi in memory of Nirupama Pathak.

“This march is just to show that a week before we had demanded that as the local police is hushing up the murder case of Nirupama Pathak, the case should be given to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), but no action has been taken yet,” said Pushpendra Kulshreshtha, General Secretary of Delhi Press Club.

“I want to announce that from today onwards members of various intellectual communities, writers, people from theatre, NGOs, they will be part of a signature campaign and this protest will not come to an end unless and until the murderers of Nirupama are caught,” he added.

The Jharkhand police have also filed a case of rape and abetment to suicide against Nirupama Pathak”s boyfriend Priyabhanshu Ranjan.

On May 9, Ranjan”s parents claimed to have mobile proof that could nail the complicity of Nirupama”s parents in what they say is murder.

In a startling claim, Ranjan”s father said he had Nirupama”s last SMS in which she said that she had been locked inside a bathroom and was not being allowed to go out.

He also said that a similar message had come from his son, who was in Delhi.

The revelation came after Koderma Police served notices to three doctors who had performed a post mortem on Nirupama.

The court directed the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Ranjan, following charges levelled by Nirupama”s arrested mother Sudha Pathak.

However, the post-mortem report revealed that Pathak died due to asphyxia as a result of smothering and that she was 10-12 weeks pregnant. (ANI)

Pak terror links found in failed Times Square bombing plot

New York, May 4 (ANI): US investigators probing Saturday night’s failed bomb attempt at the Times Square are probing the possibility of a ‘naturalized American citizen’ being involved, who was in Pakistan for several months and had returned to America recently.

According to sources, federal authorities have confirmed ‘foreign links’ in the failed bombing plot.

Senior Obama administration officials told Fox News that the latest investigations support the suspicion that there was a foreign connection behind the terror plot.

Sources said evidence includes international phone calls made by the person, who has not been identified publicly.

“Don”t be surprised if you find a foreign nexus. They”re looking at some tell-tale signs and they”re saying it”s pointing in that direction,” said a senior White House official.

It may be noted that the Pakistan Taliban has already claimed the responsibility for the bombing plot.

Meanwhile, the last owner of the Nissan Pathfinder, which was found abandoned loaded with crude explosives at the Times Square, has told the investigators that he had recently sold the SUV to a “Middle Eastern” or “Hispanic” looking man for 1,300 dollars.

Earlier, for the first time the White House confirmed that the plot was a ‘terrorist act’.

“I think that we have made really substantial progress. Ultimately this investigation will be successful and the people responsible for that attempt will be found and brought to justice,” Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters. (ANI)

London, Apr 27 (ANI): Ace striker Wayne Rooney, who was celebrating winning PFA Player of the Year, was left dazed after a 17-year-old clubber partying yards away from him collapsed and died.

Cole and Rooney were out with brother Graeme celebrating winning the award earlier that night. The Manchester United star was escorted out by a bouncer and then quizzed by police as a potential witness.

Rooney and Chelsea left-back Cole were said to have been nearby when the Portuguese tourist suffered a suspected heart attack at London’s swanky Whisky Mist at around 1.20 am on Tuesday.

Paramedics were called and carried out heart massage with a defibrillator on the pavement. He was taken to hospital but pronounced dead soon after arrival.

A spokesman for Rooney said: “As Wayne was leaving he was asked, as were all other guests, whether he had seen anything. He simply told police he had seen nothing and was not aware of any incident.”

Cole, 29, also said he did not see anything suspicious.

West Midnapore, Apr 26 (ANI): Pro- Maoist groups on Monday blocked several roads in West Bengal’s West Midnapore District demanding release of a doctor arrested on suspicion of being in connection with rebels.

The groups threatened to block the road indefinitely if the state Government fails to release the arrested doctor.

“Only when we create blockades like these, they (government) will realise that there is some problem,” said Dilbodh Mahato, a PCAPA member. (ANI)

“The way I see the whole situation is that Charles has been badly advised, and he’s made a naive mistake,” Martinez told a reporters.

“We’re going to look into every single detail before I give my full side of the story but what is important is Charles has reacted in a very mature way.

“Shawn has been important in keeping him alive. She helped him lose weight and quit smoking.” (ANI)

Chinese mine flood relatives fear toll cover-up

(Reuters) – Families and survivors of a flood feared to be one of China’s worst mine accidents in recent years say officials are covering up the true number of people trapped underground and failing in rescue efforts.

World | China

The local government has not published the names of the 153 miners it says were unable to escape when water surged into the pit on Sunday afternoon, prompting Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang to demand a list of potential victims, local media reported.

“Is 153 the exact number?” Zhang, sent to direct rescue efforts shortly after the accident, was quoted asking mine officials in a conference call.

“I don’t think the suspicion from the public is unreasonable,” he added, according to the Beijing News.

At the mine itself relatives waiting for news of their fathers, sons and brothers, and survivors keen to help out with rescue efforts all told Reuters the official toll was too low.

“We sent 10 tramcars down to the pit before the flooding and each car usually carries 44 miners and a driver,” a tramcar driver who was working on the day of the accident said.

“Only one car came back up the shaft, plus a few dozen miners who escaped on foot,” he said, suggesting nearly 450 people could have been underground at the time of the flood.

Officials say 261 people were working in the unfinished Wangjialing mine, in northern Shanxi province, and 108 escaped. Even those who do not question the total number underground say

there may be more than 153 still trapped.

“At least 200 people are trapped,” said a mine worker surnamed Li, unwilling to give his full name because of official pressure not to speak to foreign media.

“I was working in the checkpoint at the entry of the pit, so I’m quite sure about how many people had gone underground.”

A Shanxi government official said they had heard there were a lot of suspicions, but insisted the number was accurate.

“We have checked this many times, so it should be the exact number,” said the official from the province’s foreign affairs office, who gave only his surname, Cao, and said he did not know why names were not being released.

SURVIVAL HOPES?

Some miners were working on platforms above current water levels and may have survived, the official Xinhua agency said.

Sounds from the pit, which may have been someone pounding on the pipelines, were heard on Friday morning, CCTV news reported. One of the rescue workers told Reuters they had found a piece of wire tied onto a pipeline sent into the flooded zone.

But five days of rescue efforts have reduced water levels barely a meter, the Xinhua report added.

“The pipelines are too thin to pump water fast enough,” the daughter of a trapped miner told Reuters, requesting anonymity.

“My father will not be killed by the flooding, but by these rescuers,” she added.

China has ordered the consolidation or takeover of many private mines in order to improve oversight and safety.

It credits the shutdown of many of the most dangerous private mines with helping to reduce the death toll in the coal industry to about 2,600 last year from over 3,000 the year before.

But the deadliest accidents are not limited to private firms. The Wangjialing mine was a high-profile project belonging to a joint venture between China National Coal Group and Shanxi Coking Coal Group, two of China’s larger state-owned firms.

Relatives and some Chinese media have blamed the firms for ignoring safety requirements in their push to start operations.

Miners found water in the pit as early as three days before the accident, but the managers just said: “How can you be afraid of a little bit of water?” the worker surnamed Li said.

“They did not treat migrant workers as human beings,” he added.
