Survivor turns saviour for 14 passengers

Kolkata, May 29 — Habibul Gazi, 24, with his frail five-and-a-half-foot frail frame, does not look capable of saving more than a dozen passengers from the jaws of death. But his blood-stained shirt tells the story of his valiant effort.

A passenger of the S7 compartment of the Gyaneshwari Express, one of the worst hit in Friday’s accident, Gazi stood at Howrah station lamenting his inability to save a four-year-old who died in front of his eyes. If he had his way, Gazi could have saved 15 lives.

“I could not save the kid. He died in front my eyes and I was standing like a spectator.

I did pull out the child from the heap of flesh, but by that time, he was already dead,” said the man, breaking into tears. But Gazi was a man of steel as, about 12 hours ago, he worked among mangled steel and flesh and blood to rescue 14 co-passengers in complete darkness.

According to him, the rescue team around 3.30 am, while the train derailed at 1.30 am. “As I reached compartments S3, S4 and S5, I saw people lying in pools of blood.

Some of them were frantically trying to extricate themselves from the wreckage but couldn’t,” said Gazi, who works as a driver at a construction company in Mumbai. “I saw a woman lying outside the compartment and helplessly crying for help.

She was pleading with anyone she met to rescue her son who got stuck inside. I entered the bogie and brought out the child.

But when I handed the child to the lady, she fainted,” he recalled.

Driver survivor plans

A north coast road-safety campaigner will launch a 10-point Driver Survivor Plan this weekend.

Lyndal Denny will place 465 pairs of shoes by the roadside in Ballina on Sunday to draw attention to the road toll.

She says the plan includes recommendations for P-platers to undergo psychological testing and trucks to clearly display the owner’s name and number.

Ms Denny says dangerous speeders should have their vehicles modified.

“Some people just don’t learn the lesson,” Ms Denny said.

“Anybody caught driving 20 K’s over the limit we feel should have speed limiters fitted to their vehicles and the fines that they would normally pay would go to pay for the costs of those speed limiters , then with random checks to ensure those vehicles haven’t been tampered with,” she said.

‘I would have been killed’: survivor criticises CFA advice

A man who lost his father in St Andrews on Black Saturday has said he “would have been killed” too if he had followed CFA advice on what to do in a bushfire.

Robert Pierce, 62, died while staying to defend his house in St Andrews, despite sheltering in a bunker-like structure with metal shutters.

The commission heard the Country Fire Authority (CFA) had previously inspected the house and advised that it was defendable.

Mr Pierce’s son Nicolas successfully defended another house 300 metres away.

But Nicolas Pierce told the inquiry he had not followed CFA guidelines about putting out spot fires and said, had he been doing so when the main fire hit, he would not have survived.

He also said the CFA advised that a fire front ordinarily lasted 10 to 15 minutes, but on February 7th, it took more than an hour to pass.

“Lucky survivor” Ballesteros launches cancer foundation to help fellow sufferers

Madrid, June 26 (ANI): Spanish golf legend Severiano Ballesteros on Thursday launched his cancer foundation, which is aimed at helping cancer sufferers as well as aspiring golfers from poor backgrounds.

“I want to do my bit to battle this disease,” said Ballesteros at the official launch of his Madrid-based foundation.

Ballesteros, 52, who won the British Open on three occasions and the U.S. Masters twice, is currently recovering from a brain tumour that was diagnosed in October 2008.

He needed four operations, and just last week finished his sixth session of chemotherapy in Madrid as he continues to recover from the illness.

“I am a lucky man and my desire is to help others. My message is that there is no secret to life at all. What you have to do is fight and fight and fight and not give up and in the end you will be a winner,” Xinhua quoted Ballesteros, as saying.

Nevertheless, the former golfer admitted that he had been fortunate to survive.

“I have been given a second chance in life and not everyone gets one and so now I am in a position where I can contribute my grain of sand. I want to be able to contribute to the investigation against cancer so that one day in the future the experts can solve this serious problem,” Ballesteros said

Holocaust survivors’ silent behaviours tell their children about their experiences

Washington, June 23 (ANI): A new ethnographic study suggests that the aspects of knowing about a parent’s or grandparent’s Holocaust experiences and traumas are transmitted to other members of the family through unspoken and sometimes unintentional behaviours in the home.

Lead researcher Dr. Carol Kidron, an anthropologist at the University of Haifa, says that this leads to a “knowledge” and presence of the Holocaust that, despite remaining unspoken, contributes to the life experiences and constitutes the personality of the person exposed to it.

During the study, the researchers interviewed 55 children of Holocaust survivors, and found the large majority to reveal that their only knowledge of their parents’ Holocaust experiences were transmitted to them via silent, taken-for-granted everyday interpersonal interaction.

According to them, the children were able to get a sense of their parents’ experiences through the unspoken.

One recalled hearing a parent’s nightly cries. Another remembered wondering about the numbers branded on a parent’s arm, and others described watching their parents reminiscing or looking through old photographs or memorabilia.

Contrary to previous studies that suggested that the children of Holocaust survivors suffer effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Dr. Kidron concluded that 80 percent of the interviewees in the current study did not perceive themselves as suffering from such effects.

Moreover, the “knowledge”, the silent day-to-day presence of Holocaust memories that the descendents of Holocaust survivors gleaned, sufficed: As children, they frequently felt no need to question their parents in depth.

A prominent 95 percent of the interviewees assured that they were not interested in telling the story of their parents’ Holocaust experiences in the public domain, or their own.

“By forming an experiential matrix, these silent traces maintain an intimate and nonpathological presence of the Holocaust death-world in the everyday life-world,” Dr. Kidron said.

According to the researcher, the findings of this study contrast the common belief that a survivor’s silence results in a damaged relationship with his or her children, or in the absence of an inter-generational Holocaust legacy transmitted to the second generation.

It is precisely the presence of the Holocaust past in everyday silent interaction, rather than the vocal transmission of Holocaust testimony or history, that sustains and commemorates the genocidal past in the private familial domain.

The accounts provided by the interviewees in this study “depict the dynamic, normative, and self-imposed silent presence of the Holocaust death-world interwoven with everyday life,” and indicate that children’s relationships with their survivor parents were equally normative.

Dr. Kidron presented the study at a conference hosted by the University of Haifa. (ANI)

Malaysian Govt. orders probe into reality show’s stark ‘nude run’

Kuala Lumpur, May 9 (ANI): Malaysia’s Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim has announced probe into allegations that an island in Johor was used for a European reality show’s “nude run”.

“We also have to see that a production does not offend the cultural sensitivities of the various ethnic groups in the country. But morality is a complicated issue. That’s why we will have to look at this matter from various angles,” Dr Rais said.

An island off Mersing came into focus after it was used as the location for a European reality show, which had its participants running stark naked.

Scenes from the Survivor Robinson Ekspeditionen programme, which had been broadcast over TV3 in Denmark, were published on an online newspaper ScandAsia.com.

Dr Rais has asked the relevant agencies involved to help in the probe, and added that he would investigate the matter carefully as he did not want any party to feel discriminated against.

“I have to first determine what happened because various allegations have been made. I have asked all the parties responsible to forward their evidence,” he said.

The probe would also focus on which government agency or department should be held responsible.

“We can’t tell because there are actually many parties involved,” he told reporters.

A source at the Mersing local council said approval for the filming was given only after the producers agreed that there should be no nude activities.

The Danish national who e-mailed the images to Metro, said he was surprised that the Malaysian authorities had allowed the filming although the show was soft porn.

It is believed that a woman who refused to strip was kicked out of the show and sent home to Denmark. (ANI)

Tenor Jose Carreras announces retirement from opera

London, May 08 (ANI): Spanish singer Jose Carreras, who with Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo formed the ‘Three Tenors’, the most famous trio in opera history, has announced his retirement.

“If I can do concert recitals, adapting the repertoire to my needs, then no problem, that’s good enough. But with operas, unless the right circumstances come up, my career is done,” Times Online quoted Carreras as saying.

His retirement leaves 71-year-old Domingo as the only member of the trio to remain on the opera scene, after the death of Pavarotti of pancreatic cancer in September 2007.

“We were, without being presumptuous, the most popular tenors of the day,” Carreras said. (ANI)
