Surrey hopes to shine with Younis Khan in current county season

Lahore, May 19 (ANI): Banned former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan has been signed by the English county team Surrey for the ongoing domestic season.

Younis, who is Surrey’s second overseas player after Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds, would play for the county side in all tournaments until July.

Surrey’s Professional Cricket Manager Chris Adams hoped that bringing in Younis, who has an impressive average of 50.09 in 63 Tests, would have some positive effect on the team’s performance.

“I am confident that bringing a world class player such as Younus to Surrey will have a very positive effect on the side. As well as benefiting from the weight of runs we hope he will bring, we have a number of young batsman who will doubtless benefit greatly from being able to train and play alongside him,” The Daily Times quoted Adams, as saying.

Younis is expected to join the team in a week’s time. (ANI)

Symonds to debut for Surrey in June

Sydney, Apr 19 (ANI): All rounder Andrew Symonds has said that he is looking forward to joining the English county side Surrey to play Twenty20 and leaving Australia behind.

The troubled all-rounder, who lost his Cricket Australia contract following several alcohol-related indiscretions, is due to make his Surrey debut against Gloucestershire at the Brit Oval on June 8.

“It is fair to say that I had a tough couple of years trying to find a place in what was a changing environment (in Australia”s international teams) and I am much happier away from that scene,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“I will always believe in playing my cricket hard but also believe in leaving it on the field. I have been described as all sorts of things by different people, it’s amazing how well people think they know you. My friends and family give me all the important feedback I need.”

Symonds added that he believed he had “mellowed in some respects”. I have learned you can win games of cricket without hitting every ball for six,” he said.

“I do enjoy Twenty20 though – if it’s there to hit, it just has to go! I have always been an aggressive cricketer, I grew up watching Viv Richards and admired the way he went about it,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying.

“I think all forms of the game have become more athletic and more aggressive. I always had a short attention span as well so as the game gets shorter it just seems to suit me better,” Symonds added. (ANI)

John Lennon fans uncover his hidden LSD stash area

London, April 19 (ANI): John Lennon fans believe they have uncovered an area in the late Beatle”s Surrey home where he hid his stash of LSD almost four decades ago.

Builders digging up the lawn of Lennon”s old house, Kenwood, have discovered the remains of a leather holdall containing numerous large broken glass bottles, reports the Sun.

It is believed Lennon buried a large cache of drugs in his garden in 1967 when the Fab Four decided to give up drugs in favour of transcendental meditation.

However, when the band returned from India, Lennon thought he had made a hasty decision. He tried to dig up the drugs but never found them.

But now Lennon devotees are convinced that these bottles contained the drugs, even though the truth cannot be found as the only bottle found intact had a cracked cork, thus it was empty. (ANI)

Rogers at county double

Derbyshire’s Australian captain Chris Rogers, not content with scoring the first century of the new County Championship season, posted the first double hundred of the campaign.

Rogers, unbeaten on 178 overnight, took his score to exactly 200 – his third double hundred in four matches for the county – before his seven hour innings against Surrey in the Second Division at The Oval, featuring 27 fours, ended when he was bowled by off-spinner Gareth Batty.

Derbyshire ended Saturday well-placed after reducing Surrey to 5 for 185, thanks mainly to paceman Greg Smith’s burst of three wickets for four runs. But veteran batsman Mark Ramprakash was 63 not out.

Surrey takes a gamble on Symonds

Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams believes signing controversial Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds for the English county’s Twenty20 campaign is a risk worth taking.

Symonds, who boasts a Twenty20 strike rate of 156.79 and batting average of 37.43, joined the club on Wednesday and is set to make his debut against Gloucestershire at The Oval on June 8.

Adams said a phone call about two months ago convinced him Symonds could be the key to bolstering Surrey’s side in the shortest form of the game.

“I guess I’m attracted to the broken souls. If we can provide an environment for him and a place for him to come back and almost repair and reinvent himself then again it’s a win-win,” Adams told BBC radio.

“We’ll get the best out of him and he’ll get the best out of us.”

Disciplinary issues cost Symonds his place on a tour of England last year and ultimately his Australian contract.

But Adams has been impressed by the 34-year-old’s form with defending Indian Premier League champions Deccan Chargers.

“He enjoys certain aspects of a decent lifestyle but it comes down to performance on the field. That’s the thing I’m most interested in,” Adams said.

“If he joins us and continues to perform like he has in India recently then we’ll be delighted.”

Ronnie Wood’s new girlfriend thrashes him

London, March 27 (ANI): Ronnie Wood and his new Brazilian girlfriend Ana Araujo got involved in a row, after the rocker got drunk, it has emerged.

The guitarist was reportedly left with a black eye and a fat lip following the incident.

The 30-year-old model was miffed at the Rolling Stones member, when she learnt that that he had hit the bottle.

She ripped up the two paintings the guitarist had made at his Surrey mansion.

“Ana had been keeping him off the bottle. She rumbled him on Wednesday having a drink and an argument escalated quickly,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “He was calling her all sorts of names for criticising his drinking and she just snapped.

“Two of his prized paintings, which he had hoped to sell, are ruined. She ripped them to shreds. He crossed the wrong woman.”

Wood even called up ex-wife Jo later in the night, but wasn’t entertained.

The source said: “She”s sick of his nonsense and told him to get a grip. He”s become a sad old man.”

Wood and Araujo had met at the Royal Opera House in London”s Covent Garden earlier this year. (ANI)

Sleepy Devon is Britain’s cheating capital!

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Forty four percent of the people in sleepy Devon are having affairs, reveals a survey.

A staggering 44 percent who live in the scenic county admit they are currently playing away while an extra 4 percent have cheated in the past, reports the Daily Star.

Research was conducted by IllicitEncounters.com.

Only 19 percent of people in second-placed Avon admitted they are cheaters.

Saintly Surrey was the most faithful county, with only 3 percent having strayed.

To reach the conclusion, OnePoll quizzed more than 4,000 married people on their relationship habits.

Sara Hartley, from Illicit Encounters, said: “In our opinion, Devon have just been much more honest in their answers.

“It has previously been estimated that around 40 percent of women and 60 percent of men will cheat during marriage, so these figures seem incredibly low.

“Traditional values seem to have a strong hold in rural towns and villages, therefore many feel a strong pressure to marry. As a result, we see a lot of members from places like Devon, who married young and now feel trapped in their relationships.

“The Western Isles, which is widely considered to be one of the most religious places in the UK, has a higher percentage of IllicitEncounters.com members than most other counties.”(ANI)

Ashley Cole ‘meets Cheryl for first time after affair exposé’

London, March 13 (ANI): Ashley Cole reportedly met with wife Cheryl for the first time in the same house since news broke of the footballer’s extra marital affairs.

The Chelsea star was said to have jetted home from Biarritz, South West France, for a face-to-face talk with the X Factor judge at their Surrey mansion in the UK.

“Cheryl was in the house when he arrived back. She agreed that he could return and she would be there. But she has not taken him back. It was not a reunion. They had a lot to talk about,” the Sun quoted a pal as saying.

“There was a lot of emotional chat about how to move forward. But Cheryl is still incredibly angry and upset and determined to leave and set up a new life. She was prepared to hear what he had to say but that”s it,” the pal added. (ANI)

Razzaq to join Afridi, Mendis for Hampshire Hawks

London, Mar 8(ANI): England’s reigning Twenty20 champions Hampshire Hawks have signed Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who will be joining his national team-mate Shahid Afridi at the Rose Bowl.

Razzaq is an integral part of Pakistan”s one-day and Twenty20 squads and is considered especially vital in the Twenty20 team, where his all-round skills make him an important asset to the squad.

Hampshire will be hoping that the 30-year-old and Afridi can provide the big hitting firepower they will need to retain their title, as the Friends Provident Trophy kicks off in June, Cricistan reports.

With the arrival of Razzaq to partner Afridi and Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis, the Hawks have raised the bar to unprecedented heights.

Afridi and Mendis were two of the top wicket takers in the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup and Hampshire will be hoping that the spin twins will choke the life out of the Hawk”s opposition.

Razzaq had earlier played at the English county level for Middlesex, Worcestershire and Surrey. He joined Surrey in June 2008 on a short-term contract to play in the Twenty20 tournament. (ANI)

Brit woman thinks she has finally found Mr. Right in sixth hubby!

London, Sep 11 (ANI): A Brit woman, who has spent 31-years looking for Mr Right, thinks that she has finally found him in her sixth husband.

Lady Rosemaris Chanie-Cridge, 50, a former dancer and actress, saw her five previous marriages last between 18 months and ten years, with her choices ranging from a wealthy property developer to a Texan Marine named Butch Gayheart.

Now, Lady Rosemaris, who has kids Sabrina, 23, Krystle, 24, and 14-year-old Joshua by two different men, says that she has found her true love in plumber Gary Cridge, 40, who she met last year when he came to fix her washing machine.

“I really have found my Mr Right after all these years. Each time I thought the marriage was going to last. I said my vows with sincerity,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

She met her first husband, 25-year-old Michael Robins, at the age of 17 and they wed two years later.

“He was extremely attractive, I fell in love immediately,” she said.

They had a church wedding in Ealing, West London, in 1978, but the marriage broke down after two years.

“I was devastated – I thought that marriage was for life. My parents split up when I was three. I became obsessed with the idea that my marriage would be different,” she said.

She then wed former Marine Harry ‘Butch’ Gayheart, 25, in 1983 but split after two years.

“He proposed after a month. He was so romantic and seemed to offer the love I craved,” she recalled.

Property developer Gordon O’Shea, 40, became her third husband, but the marriage did not last when he decided to give his money away and go to Africa to work as a missionary.

They divorced in 1989 after 18 months of marriage.

Lady Rosemaris met Goran Koroliga at a cocktail party in LA and they wed in 1990, but split after two years.

Her fifth marriage, to Max Jesson in 1997, lasted a decade and left her “absolutely devastated” when it ended.

But Lady Rosemaris, of Banstead, Surrey, believes her new love will last forever after marrying Gary in May.

“I told him about my past. A lot of men would have felt intimidated, but it didn’t matter to him,” she said.

“When I said my vows, they seemed extra special. I always knew true love was out there. I’ve finally found the man of my dreams,” she added. (ANI)

Why diet drugs work

London, Sept 11 (ANI): Diet drugs work because they make people eat more healthily, claim psychologists.

In the study, presented at the British Psychological Society’s Division of Health Psychology conference in Birmingham, researchers found that dieters who lost the most weight on the drugs had also reduced the amount of fatty junk food they ate.

However, some people reacted differently to starting the drugs, taking them as a license to eat more unhealthy food such as crisps, reports The Telegraph.

To reach the conclusion, researchers analysed data of 572 people who had been prescribed the diet drug orlistat by their doctor.

The drug works by reducing the amount of fat absorbed by the body. However, this fat is them eliminated in bowel movements, which can cause disagreeable side effects.

Amelia Hollywood, a PHD student at the University of Surrey and one of the researchers who carried out the study, said: “Our findings support the idea that orlistat works not only on a physical level, but also psychologically – as it encourages people to see their diet as a cause of their weight problem.

“In addition, the side effects are so unpleasant that people avoid bad eating fatty foods and therefore lose weight.

“However, the way in which some people responded to orlistat was surprising.

“Some participants in this study reported that their eating behaviour became significantly unhealthier over the six month period.”

She added: “People also told us that they were not adhering to the medication as they should. It seemed that these people were taking orlistat as a lifestyle drug – choosing to take it when they were eating foods higher in fat to reduce any weight gain or not taking it when going on holiday or out for a meal as they didn’t want to experience the consequences of eating fatty foods.”

The preliminary findings found that on average those taking the diet pills lost almost 10lb over six months. (ANI)

Sleeping with partner could be bad for health and relationship

London, Sept 9 (ANI): The secret to a long, healthy and happy marriage might lie in having separate beds, claims a sleep expert.

A research has found that sharing a bed often led to poor quality sleep as people were regularly disturbed by their loved ones during the night.

Speaking at a special seminar on sleep at the British Science Festival, Dr Neil Stanley, a sleep expert at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, said: “A normal double bed is 4ft 6inches wide. That means you have up to nine inches less per person in a double bed than a child has in a single bed.

“Add to this another person who kicks, punches, snores and gets up to go to the loo and is it any wonder that we are not getting a good night’s sleep?

“To save your marriage and your health you should have a discussion about your sleep.”

However, despite the detrimental effects of snoring, teeth grinding and tossing and turning, people tolerated it because culturally sleeping together is considered a sign of intimacy, reports The Telegraph.

Stanley, who follows his own advice and sleeps in a different room to his wife, said that double beds are just not conducive to a good night’s sleep.

He said the tradition of the marital bed began with the industrial revolution, when people moved into cities and found themselves short of living space. Before the Victorian era it was not uncommon for married couples to sleep apart.

“Intimacy is good for emotional health but good sleep is good for physical and mental health,” he said.

Stanley, who set up the Sleep Lab at the University of Surrey, said: “Sleep is a selfish thing to do. No one can share your sleep. If you know that your partner is next to you, then you are awake. If you are sleeping together and it is all right then carry on. If not then you should do something about it, not just tolerate it. Getting a good night’s sleep is as important as diet and exercise.”

The expert also suggested various ways through which couples could improve their sleep, if sleeping in separate beds was too much of a leap.

They included buying a bigger bed, having separate duvets and having darker curtains. (ANI)

60-year-old drug may help treat deadly cancers

Washington, Aug 27 (ANI): A drug developed back in 1940s has a potential to treat some of the most deadly cancers, it has emerged.

Scientists from Institute of Cancer Research in London have discovered that methotrexate, a chemotherapy treatment invented in the 1940s, has the potential to work against a genetic fault called HNPCC.

It is involved in many bowel cancer cases and also puts people at an increased risk of other cancers.

Five per cent of those diagnosed with bowel cancer have the HNPCC fault – of whom nearly half would have a further defect called MSH2.

The study showed that methotrexate worked particularly well in killing cells with the MSH2 genetic fault.

A clinical trial has begun at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London and Surrey on patients with advanced bowel cancer.

Although one of the first chemotherapies, methotrexate has not commonly been used to treat the HNPCC fault.

“Methotrexate may make an excellent treatment,” the Daily Express quoted Professor Alan Ashworth, who led study, said in EMBO Molecular Medicine as saying. (ANI)

Ashes hero Trott is also a diehard Hotspur fan!

London, Aug.26 (ANI): The signed England shirt and cricket stump will not be the only mementoes on the walls of Jonathan Trott’s Birmingham home. They will be given equal billing alongside his other most-prized sporting possession, his autographed Tottenham top from manager Harry Redknapp.

Trott, whose brilliantly assured second-innings century on his Test debut helped lay the foundations for the triumph, is not just a cricket lover – he’s a Spurs nut.

And he was gobsmacked that Redknapp, boss of the current Premier League leaders, sent him a shirt as a wedding present when he tied the knot with Abi in April.

Trott said: “The shirt says ‘To Trotty, Up the Spurs, Harry Redknapp’. Then there’s a card from him which says ‘To Trotty. Have a Great Day’.

“I love Spurs, I’m a massive fan and it would be fantastic if they could get into the Champions League to go with us winning The Ashes.

“Even during the Test on Sunday, I caught the TV at lunchtime and checked on the Spurs line-up for the game against West Ham, just to make sure Harry got it right. I wanted to know the final score while I was fielding but I never did and only found out after we had won The Ashes.”

Trott now looks a certainty to make England’s tour to South Africa having proved how cool he is under pressure – despite Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting’s claim he could crumble.

His Spurs allegiance was passed on from his English-born dad Ian and, growing up in Cape Town, he never missed coverage of them.

“I had loads of pictures on my wall and I’ve got tons of old Spurs shirts. I used to walk round with ‘Sheringham’ on my back. The first time I saw Spurs live was at Birmingham in 2003. I was in the Spurs end, we lost 1-0 to David Dunn penalty.

Despite being born and schooled in South Africa, Trott considers himself a proper Englishman.

He added: “I had a British passport from birth and can remember travelling to England in 1996 with the South African Under-15 side.

“Everyone else needed a visa and I just walked straight in. Mind you, I had more trouble getting back into South Africa than anyone else.

“My dad was born in England, my parents live in Surrey and my uncle and granddad live in Kent.

“I didn’t come here as a young guy just to try and take the cash back to South Africa. My home is in Birmingham, I’m an adopted Brummie and I’m very proud.”

Trott’s favourite memory of the triumph is not actually his ton.

He added: “For the rest of my life I’ll remember fielding at deep point to Michael Hussey when he hit it to Andrew Flintoff.

“I had a perfect view. Freddie’s direct hit was phenomenal and to run out Ricky Ponting was the defining moment of the game.” (ANI)

Naked beauties on horsebacks recreate Lady Godiva’s epic ride in Surrey

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Four frisky frillies galloped naked on horsebacks around a racetrack to promote an upcoming Ladies Day.

They recreated Lady Godiva’s epic ride at Kempton Park in Surrey.

Emma Glover was one of four naked beauties. She rode horse Misty to victory, beating fellow beauties Chloe Tweedie, 23, Alex Finch, 24, and Emily Taylor, 23.

“We wanted to launch our first Ladies Day with an iconic image – one to really remember,” the Sun quoted a spokesperson for Kempton Park in Surrey as saying.

“And what better way to capture the spirit of Ladies Day than by recruiting Kempton Park’s very own modern-day Lady Godivas,” the spokesperson added. (ANI)

Duo who stole Prince William, Middleton’s holiday pics branded ‘Dumb and Dumber’

London, August 21 (ANI): Two Londoners were branded “Dumb and Dumber” by a lawyer on Thursday, after they stole a digital camera memory card storing holiday snaps of Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Kingston Crown Court, Surrey, later ordered Market trader Charlie Ewins, 26, and electrician Leon Sesay, 25, to do 100 hours unpaid work, and pay 125-pound costs after admitting theft.

The two friends had tried to sell the card for 50,000 pounds, after it was taken from the car of Kate’s sister Pippa, 24.

According to the Daily Express, the pictures showed William wearing a woman’s hat, and Kate doing yoga in a bikini, while on a Caribbean holiday. (ANI)

Jordan ‘tries to do a Princess Diana with great mum act’

London, August 20 (ANI): Jordan a.k.a Katie Price appeared to copy Princess Diana during an outing with her son.

The glamour girl, who is presently locked in a bitter divorce battle with estranged husband Peter Andre, allegedly took seven-year-old Harvey on a family day out to Thorpe Park, Surrey, UK, in an alleged bid to prove she is a great mum.

The youngster was snapped sticking his fingers in his ears when the star shrieked with joy as they enjoyed a ride with her new man Alex Reid, reports the Daily Star.

The family pictures were said to resemble previously famous shots of Diana and her sons William and Harry on the same ride at the theme park.

An onlooker said: “Kate was pulling out the stops to look like the perfect mum but it all seemed quite staged.” (ANI)

Clarke backs Ponting to show his class at The Oval

Surrey, Aug 20(ANI): Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke has warned England that they should fear the Australian captain Ricky Ponting as he plays the fifth and final Ashes Test match at The Oval that will determine his legacy.

“You see Punter in World Cup finals or huge matches and he always stands up,’” The Daily Telegraph quoted Clarke, as saying.

“I think that is probably one of his greatest assets as a leader, in big games he always does stand up and lead from the front. That is certainly something I think England should fear,” he added.

The Oval Test would be the last of Ponting’s 18 Tests on English soil and will also determine his legacy as Australian captain, as a loss will mean that Ponting will go down in history as only the second captain to lead Australia to consecutive Ashes defeats in England. (ANI)
