HIGHLIGHTS-Infosys executive on demand, Europe crisis

July 13 (Reuters) – Infosys Technologies (INFY.BO) raised its forecast on a revival in outsourcing demand from its mainstay financial clients, but its shares fell as markets worried a weak European economy could curb orders.

India’s No. 2 outsourcer reported a surprise 2.6 percent drop in April-June profit and its sales contribution from Europe fell to about 20 percent from nearly 25 percent a year ago and 23 percent in January-March.

For a story on the company’s results and outlook, see [ID:nSGE6680B5]

Following are comments from senior company officials after the result.

V. BALAKRISHNAN, CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

—————————————-

ON DEMAND ENVIRONMENT:

“There are good times and bad times. Good times because there is a lot of spending happening from all customers. All the large economies are in distress; when the economies are in distress outsourcing increases. That is what we have seen in this quarter also. The bad thing is all the macro economic indicators are very bad so we have to closely watch them.”

ON EUROPE:

“We are not hearing anything from clients till now. We are not seeing any impact on the ground but that is something we have to watch out. If it becomes a larger issue then it could have an impact. Right now, it looks manageable.”

ON PRICING:

“When the economy stabilises, when all the clouds go away probably we will have pricing power.”

S.D. SHIBULAL, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

—————————————

ON DEMAND:

“Overall, we are cautiously optimistic. We see caution all around but mostly in Europe. The U.S. clients have started spending. We are seeing traction in multiple segments.”

ON EUROPE:

“Europe, there are still concerns, local concerns as well as tail effects of the previous recession. Of course, Europe entered the recession late and we believe it will also come out late. “We believe that Europe will lag behind the U.S. for may be another quarter or two.

“Aspirationally, Europe is very important for us. We expect that Europe will be eventually about one-third of business in the long run. At the same time, we expect some challenges in the medium term.”

ON PRICING:

“Our pricing is stable at this point. We are seeing occasional renegotiations actually both upwards and downwards. It’s part of our regular business. We are not seeing any unusual activity.” (Reporting by Bharghavi Nagaraju; Editing by Ranjit Gangadharan)

India’s Fortis revokes 39 mln pledged shares

July 5 (Reuters) – Fortis Healthcare (FOHE.BO), locked in a battle to take control of Singapore’s Parkway Holdings (PARM.SI), said on Monday the owners of the Indian hospital chain had revoked about 39 million pledged shares, or nearly 10 percent of total outstanding equity.

After the transaction, the percentage of shares pledged to total number of Fortis’ outstanding shares was roughly 31 percent, the company said in a disclosure to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

It did not provide details of the transaction in the stock exchange filing.

Companies usually pledge shares to raise funds and the agreement is revoked when the loans are repayed.

Fortis, which controls just over 25 percent of Parkway, had intended to build a controlling stake in the Singapore firm before Malaysian state fund Khazanah made a surprise $835 million partial offer in May to lift its stake to 51.5 percent. [ID:nSGE64Q042]

Analysts say billionaire brothers Malvinder and Shivinder Singh, who control Fortis, have the access to capital to challenge the Malaysian fund, although Khazanah has far deeper pockets, with $28 billion in assets. (Reporting by Sumeet Chatterjee; Editing by Ranjit Gangadharan)

An ‘instinctive’ offer to quit

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel’s offer to resign from the Cabinet, taking moral responsibility for the air crash in Mangalore last week, took even his party leader, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, by surprise. Pawar was abroad at the time and Patel had not informed him before offering to quit, an offer that was declined by the Prime Minister.

When Pawar inquired about it later, Patel is reported to have told him that he was so overwhelmed by the sight of the tragedy that he somehow felt responsible for it. Offering to resign was an instinctive decision, taken on the spot, he told his leader.

Shera plays host, eases anxieties of applicants

New Delhi, May 28 — Students who went to collect the application forms on day one of the Delhi University’s admission form sale at the Faculty of Arts centre were in for a surprise as they were greeted by Shera – the mascot of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010. As part of the promotion of the CWG, the organising committee will conduct a quiz competition based on the commonwealth games and the mascot, Shera, will try to lighten the atmosphere through out the form sale period, May 28 to June 11, said CWG officials.

“We want to relieve the students of the pressure they are under and create a friendly atmosphere. Simultaneously, we also want to create awareness about Shera and the games.

Though most students of Delhi know about the games, those outside Delhi are not really aware of it so we are trying to familiarise them,” said an Assistant Project Officer of the organising committee. Students took a break from the form-filling process and participated in the quiz contest.

Questions such as “When and when were the first CWG held?” and “What are the two colours of CWG?” were answered by students. One lucky student would be awarded each day with a goodie bag.

Aimed at humouring the students, Shera, entertained some of them as they posed and clicked pictures with the mascot of the CWG. But some of them were not amused at all.

Lucknow, May 26 (ANI): The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday decided to re-nominate outgoing member and film actress Jaya Bachchan in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

The party’s parliamentary board met here and also decided to field former Union Minister Rashid Masood.

Currently, the Samajwadi Party has 11 members in the Rajya Sabha.

For the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, the party would field three candidates–Balram Yadav, Ram Sunder Das Nishad and Ram Naresh Yadav.

Among the 13 council members, the party had five. (ANI)

British policeman wins international award for UFO sighting database

London, May 21(ANI): A British policeman, Gary Heseltine, has won the 2010 Disclosures Award in Washington for his database of UFO sightings in the UK.

The 49-year-old picked up the award for his website, prufospolicedatabase.co.uk, which he launched in 2002. The database includes 330 cases and the witness statements of more than 750 police officers.

“Winning the award was a total surprise, I didn’t know I was going to win until my name was read out,” The Telegraph quoted Heseltine, as saying.

“It’s also a terrific boost for my database as it puts me on an international platform and I have already been offered chances to give lectures in Brazil and Denmark,” he added.

Elucidating his fascination with the unexplained, Heseltine said it began at the age of 15, when he spotted a mysterious bright light while walking his first girlfriend home.

“I was with my first girlfriend heading towards the comprehensive school and suddenly became aware of a large bright light. Suddenly all the electricity on the housing estate we could see ahead cut out,” Heseltine said.

“We were terrified at the time, but afterwards I decided to investigate and discovered that power cuts are extremely common during UFO sightings,” he added. (ANI)

London, May 19 (ANI): Actress Gemma Arterton has revealed that she was ‘flabbergasted’ when she saw co-star Jake Gyllenhaal’s body during shooting of their latest film ‘Prince Of Persia’.

Arterton, 24, revealed her reaction to 29-year-old Gyllenhaal’s body at the movie’s Hollywood premiere.

“I was so nervous about my own work, I was just like ‘oh yeah nice body’ – but I remember I was flabbergasted,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“I’ve seen a few bodies now, Daniel Craig and what not, but it still takes me by surprise. It’s always nice to see something like that,” she added.

‘Prince Of Persia’ will be released in UK cinemas on May 28. (ANI)

Chinese restaurant manager swallows cockroach to destroy evidence!

Kuala Lumpur, May 18 (ANI): A restaurant manager in China swallowed a cockroach that was discovered in a customer”s dish to destroy evidence.

The incident took place when Huang Xiaogang and friends were having their meal at a restaurant in Caidian of Wuhan province recently.

Huang found a black creature in the bowl of mushrooms and picked it up with his chopsticks.

To his surprise that tiny black thing was a dead cockroach and complained to the restaurant manager, reports the Daily Chilli.

The manager gagged about the happening and said that the insect had been “sterilised in high temperature” and was not dirty anymore.

Assuring Huang that the insect would not cause any harm to their health, he picked it up and swallowed it.

The manager later told health officers that he was afraid that the customers would demand high compensation that is why he swallowed the cockroach to destroy evidence.

He then waived off Huang”s bill of 570 Yuan. (ANI)

Brit dog walker ‘snaps Victorian Age ghost in park”

London, May 15 (ANI): A dog walker has spoken of his amazement after snapping what he claimed was a Victorian Age ghost in a park.

Paul Reed, a father of two, spotted the phantom appear behind a park bench while he was walking through Kelsey Park in Beckenham, Kent, reports The Telegraph.

The man, 46, said he was walking pet pooch Harry in the park when the spook suddenly appeared.

“It was really spooky,” he said.

“Harry wasn”t his usual self. He was cowering back towards me and I must admit I was shocked when I saw the ghost appear before my eyes.

“Another walker said the ghost could belong to a woman who was buried in the park in the late 19th century,” he added.

Local Samuel Allan said: “There was a case of a woman being buried in the park in the late 1890s because she loved walking in it so much.

“It appears she still haunts the park and comes out now and again, much to the surprise of walkers.” (ANI)

London, May 15 (ANI): Greyson Chance, the 12-year-old web singing sensation, finally got the chance to chat with his idol Lady Gaga on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Just a day after posting his rendition of Paparazzi online, Greyson attracted more than a million YouTube hits and was invited on show.

And that’s where he got a big surprise from the host— a phonecall from none other than Lady Gaga herself.

“You”re so sweet and so talented. I was so excited that you covered Paparazzi,” the Sun quoted the ‘Just Dance’ singer as saying.

“Everyone loves you so much, keep following your dreams, work really hard… and stay away from girls,” advised Gaga.

Greyson revealed he has had piano lessons for three years, but never taken a voice lesson to this day.

The Oklahoma lad also said he had never even been on a plane until producers invited him to the studio in LA.

Brendon McCullum believes bro Nathan will continue to deliver

Barbados (West Indies), May 6 (ANI): New Zealand wicket-keeper-batsman Brendon McCullum believes his brother Nathan, an off-spinner and hard-hitting lower-order batsman, will continue with his standout performance in the Group of Eight clashes of the World Twenty20 Cup.

“He”s (Nathan) a vital member of the team at the moment in this form of the game and in this country. Certainly the role he has to play is going to play a big part in our ability to progress through the tournament,” the New Zealand Herald quoted Brendon, as saying.

“I”m pleased for him, I know how hard he works and I know how much he loves playing for New Zealand. To see him get the performances he has in the last two games … is no easy feat,” he added.

All-rounder Scott Styris has also emerged as a key figure, more with his medium-paced cutters than the bat, much to his own surprise.

Styris admitted rolling the arm over had become more of an afterthought in the latter part of his career.

“I”d like to think I know what I”m doing with the ball, it”s pretty basic and simple,” he told Radio Sport.

Styris is, however, unsure how much influence his bowling would have during the Super Eight stage.

“From what we can understand, Barbados is very similar (to Guyana) so hopefully that will suit us,” he said. (ANI)

England can spring surprises in Twenty20 World Cup: Anderson

London, Apr 26 (ANI): England pacer James Anderson has said that they can spring a surprise if they play well in the Twenty20 World Cup in the Carribean.

Anderson, who looked fit and in form for Lancashire last week, contradicted both Andy Flower and Kevin Pietersen before the squad left for the World Twenty20 on Sunday.

Team Director Flower suggested that England are undercooked going into the tournament, while Pietersen said that bowlers “missed the boat” by declining to put themselves forward for the Indian Premier League and gain 20-over experience, The Times reports.

“If you look at our bowlers, we had two guys, Stuart [Broad] and Graeme Swann, who played all winter and needed a break after Bangladesh. Personally, I needed a rest from my knee and there wasn’t that opportunity to go to IPL this year,” Anderson said.

“In future years it probably would help for England if we could go there and gain more experience of Twenty20, but at the moment it is not an option.

“I will have to wait and see how things go next year. I would like to play IPL because it is exciting and the more experience we get the better,” he said.

Anderson said: “I don’t think we are undercooked. We showed in the Champions Trophy in South Africa last year that we are improving in one-day cricket and we have strengthened the right areas.”

“We will have to play very, very well, but I don’t see why we can’t win it,” The Times quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Gemma Arterton taking break from acting to marry boyfriend

London, April 17 (ANI): English actress Gemma Arterton is planning to take a break from acting so that she can marry her boyfriend Stefano.

Arterton is engaged to Italian stuntman who is only known by the name of Stefano, reports The Daily Express.

Stefano popped the question to the 24-year-old actress in the summer of 2009.

Arterton has admitted that they plan to get married in 2010.

“I don”t know what I”m going to do next. I”ve got a few months off – I”m getting married – but now I”m being more selective with what I”m going to do.” Arterton said.

“I always thought I was going to end up an old spinster, with my cats and my fur coats. It just takes you by surprise. It was absolutely instant. I remember going home the night after I met him and writing in my diary, ”I”ve met the man I”m going to marry”. I gave that diary entry to him for his birthday two weeks later. But it didn”t freak him out, because he was thinking the same thing. I just really want to spend the rest of my life with him. He”s an amazing man,” Arterton said during an interview with Instyle magazine. (ANI)
