Firemen bring southern France fire under control

MARSEILLE, France, July 25 (Reuters) – Fireman brought a wildfire spread over nine square kilometres (3.5 sq mile) of land in southern France under control on Sunday, fire services said.

The blaze, which threatened homes and forced some areas to be evacuated, started on Saturday close to oil refineries near l’Etang de Berre, about 30 km (18 miles) west of the port city of Marseille, before spreading eastwards into arid woodlands.

Fanned by strong winds, television pictures showed large swathes of trees and vegetation ablaze and planes dropping water over the area.

“The fire is under control and is no longer spreading,” said a spokesman for the local fire department.

Hundreds of firemen were battling to put out the flames, which were still raging on Sunday morning, but winds had calmed down, emergency services said.

About 2,000 tourists were moved from a campsite. No one was injured, officials said, adding the fire was likely to have been sparked on purpose.

Wildfires, often started by arsonists, are frequent during the summer in southern France.

13 Americans killed as Taliban claim shooting down US helicopter in Aghanistan

Farah (Afghanistan), Apr 26(ANI): At least 13 Americans were killed when a low flying US Apache helicopter was reportedly shot down by Taliban militants while flying over Afghanistan’s Farah province.

The helicopter was hovering over Khak Safid district on Sunday morning, when it caught fire and fell on the desert of Nal, The Nation reports.

It is the second incident of a helicopter being shot down in two months. Earlier in February, an Apache helicopter was shot down near the airfield of Farah province.

Earlier this month, a Taliban spokesman had claimed responsibility of shooting down three NATO helicopters in Afghanistan’s Zabol Province, Maidan Wardak and Kunduz.

The crashes had injured several NATO servicemen and three members of the Afghan security forces. (ANI)

England may travel by train to reach West Indies for T20 cup

London, Apr 21 (ANI): England cricket team could travel by train to the south of France to catch a flight to the West Indies for the World Twenty20.

Most of the England squad are due to fly to Barbados from Heathrow on Sunday morning, but the continuous suspension of flights from London has left the International Cricket Council and the England and Wales Cricket Board looking for alternative routes.

The ICC is set to charter a flight from Dubai on Sunday or Monday, which could carry the England team if they can find a working airport in Europe.

The south of France and Spain are being explored, with the ECB having provisionally booking a Eurostar trip on Sunday, The Telegraph reports.

Almost all teams were due to fly through London en route to the Caribbean but the ICC is now looking to send Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, South Africa and Bangladesh through Dubai instead.

“We will do everything possible to ensure the players get to the Caribbean. We’ll look at all possibilities to ensure the attendance of players from the UK, even if it means getting them to Dubai on helicopters and low-level flights,” said ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat. (ANI)

Police warn drivers after 2nd fatal crash

Northern region traffic police say drivers continue to ignore road safety messages.

The comment comes after the deaths in two days of four young people in two separate accidents at Grafton and on the Pacific Highway south of Urunga.

Senior Constable Glen Trubody says the police and the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) are doing everything possible to warn drivers.

He says young and old drivers need to take responsibility for their actions on the roads.

“Again, the message doesn’t seem to be getting through,” he said.

“These young drivers are old enough to control a vehicle that in some cases are over two or three tonnes in weight.

“It’s basically a deadly weapon when travelling at speed or [when] the people controlling it are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. ”

Funerals will be held later this week for two young men who died in the car crash at Grafton at the weekend.

Nathan Chapman, 21, and Kyle Clifford, 18, were both killed when their car ran out of control and slammed into a tree early on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing into yesterday morning’s fatal crash on the Pacific Highway.

Police have not yet released the names of two local men who died in a head-on crash south of Urunga about 8:30pm (AEST).

A 29-year-old man from Toormina and a 28-year-old from Corindi Beach died in the crash.

A passenger in their car, a 28-year-old woman from Toormina, and the 54-year old driver of the other car, a woman from Valla, were seriously injured.

Labor pains deliver first Green minister

The leader of the Tasmanian Greens appears set to go down in history as the first MP from the party to be given a ministerial job.

In a highly-anticipated move, Nick McKim has been formally invited to join the Cabinet in Labor’s minority government.

The Greens leader has until Sunday morning to accept the power-sharing offer.

After three days of negotiations, Premier David Bartlett on Friday invited Mr McKim to be a minister in the Cabinet but will not speculate on which portfolio he would hold.

Mr Bartlett has ruled out appointing more Greens ministers for now but says Upper House independents may be invited before the Cabinet is sworn in next Wednesday.

“Tonight I have sent Mr Nick McKim a letter of invitation to join a Labor Cabinet as a non-PLP [Parliamentary Labor Party] member,” he said.

“This has never happened before in Tasmania and therefore we need to tread carefully.”

The offer compels Mr McKim to vote with the Government in Parliament on matters approved by Cabinet.

The only exceptions are so-called “matters of significant concern” in which he can abstain, as long as he consults the Premier.

In a brief statement, Mr McKim says he is taking legal advice about the formal offer and will respond after consulting the Greens’ partyroom.

The announcement comes almost four weeks after the state election which resulted in a hung parliament, with Labor and the Liberal Party holding 10 seats each in the Lower House and the Greens five seats.

Mr Bartlett says he is convinced the appointment will make his minority government more stable and effective.

“I recognise there will be many people who don’t want to see this happen in Tasmania,” he said.

Cousins banned over hotel incident

Ben Cousins is among four Richmond players who have been suspended for misbehaving at a Sydney hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Midfielder Daniel Connors will miss eight weeks for “unsociable behaviour” and has been ordered to attend alcohol counselling.

Cousins, Luke McGuane and Dean Polo have been suspended for one week, but the club says while they acted inappropriately, they were not intoxicated.

“The Richmond Football Club will not tolerate the behaviour shown by these players, and has acted accordingly,” Richmond general manager of football Craig Cameron said in a statement.

Connors has also been suspended from training with the club for six weeks.

“I am extremely disappointed in my actions and I regret the stupid decisions I made on the night,” he said.

“I apologise to all Richmond members and supporters, my team-mates, club officials and the guests at the Intercontinental Hotel, who were subjected to my behaviour.

“Over the next few weeks I will be doing everything I can to win back the respect of those who I have let down.

“This has been a massive wake-up call for me and I accept that I have a problem with alcohol which I need to address.”

Tigers chief executive officer Brendon Gale added: “Every player at this club needs to fully understand the responsibility that goes with pulling on the yellow and black jumper.”

Cage fighters implicated in brawl

Lismore police are investigating a possible link between a weekend brawl outside a hotel and a cage-fighting event that was held in the city on the same night.

Detectives say competitors from the tournament were among those outside the venue when police were called at about half past three on Sunday morning.

Detective inspector Greg Moore says few witnesses were willing to co-operate with the attending officers, and closed-circuit television footage is now being reviewed.

He says it’s not clear what involvement, if any, the cage fighters had in the brawl.

Police hunt man over indecent assault spate

New South Wales Police believe the same man may be responsible for a number of indecent assaults on women in Sydney’s south over the past several months.

Officers say a woman was followed, pushed to the ground, assaulted and robbed by a man at Woolooware in the early hours of Sunday March 14.

Early in the morning of February 6, a man followed a group of women as they left a fast-food outlet at Kirrawee and later assaulted one of them.

And police are also investigating two other cases which happened on the same day in October last year.

In the first case, a woman was indecently assaulted in a park at Gymea and about three hours later another woman was followed home and approached by a man but he left.

In all of the assaults the attacker has been described as white, slim with short or ear-length brown hair in his mid 20s to mid 30s.

All the assaults happened in the early hours of a Sunday morning.

Acting Superintedent Damian Henry says police are taking measures to prevent any further attacks.

“We’ve increased our patrols, particularly in the early hours of the morning,” he said.

Anyone with information about the man is urged to contact Sutherland Police via Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Man charged over Biloela bashing

A 35-year-old man has been taken to Rockhampton Hospital with a suspected fractured skull after being injured during a fight in Biloela.

Police have charged a 25-year-old man with grievous bodily harm over the incident.

It is alleged one of the men was punched in the face and fell to the ground after being knocked unconscious during an argument between the pair early on Sunday morning.

Police say the 25-year-old man from Tannum Sands will appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court next week.

Police probe park bashing

A man is recovering after being bashed by a group of men in central Bendigo early on Sunday morning.

Police say the 22-year-old was attacked by four people in an unprovoked assault in Rosalind Park about 5:00am (AEDT).

Earlier, a 17-year-old was taken to hospital after being knocked unconscious in Bridge Street.

Bendigo police were called to the area just before 3:00am when two groups were involved in a fight.

Police want anyone with information on either incident to contact Crimestoppers.

Knife attack accused denied bail

A 22-year-old man charged over a knife attack in Maryborough has been remanded in custody.

A 19-year-old man suffered a wound to the face when he was slashed with a knife on Sunday morning.

He is in a stable condition in hospital.

Detective Grant Allan told the Bendigo Magistrates Court, Scott Pearson had admitted to the attack the next day.

But the court heard he has not entered a plea.

Detective Allan said Pearson did not know the alleged victim but became aggressive when the man tried to stop Pearson’s partner fighting with another woman.

Pearson is charged with intentionally causing serious injury.

He was denied bail and the matter will return to court in June.

Vandals trash public service cars

Police in Geraldton are investigating the vandalism of a dozen cars at the Department of Agriculture and Food’s office.

The windows of 10 departmental cars and two CSIRO vehicles had their driver’s side window smashed sometime between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

The offenders are believed to have scaled a fence to gain entry to the staff car park on Gregory Street.

Nothing was stolen but the offenders rifled through the glove boxes of the vehicles.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Broken wrist sidelines Davydenko

Fifth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko has learned that his painful left wrist is broken, sidelining him for four weeks, ATP tour officials said.

Davydenko withdrew from the Indian Wells Masters 1000, where he had already played and won one match – beating young Latvian Ernests Gulbis in his second-round opener on Saturday (local time).

But an MRI exam on Sunday morning showed the wrist injury that had kept him out of Russia’s Davis Cup clash with India earlier this month was, in fact, a fracture.

Davydenko was originally injured in his semi-final loss in Rotterdam in February.

It was not diagnosed as a broken bone, and he played one match the Dubai Open before retiring after one set from his match against Michael Berrer.

The injury was a particular issue for the righthander on his two-handed backhand. He had also said in Dubai that the more he played the more swollen and painful his wrist became.

An ATP spokesman said Davydenko would be out of action and have a splint on the wrist, for four weeks.

Fishing boat scuppered on Moreton Bay

A former fishing boat that will form part of an artificial reef in Moreton Bay in south-east Queensland has been sunk two days earlier than planned.

The ‘Tiwi Pearl’ was supposed to be flooded near St Helena Island on Sunday morning.

Instead, it was moved five kilometres to its planned position and scuppered on Friday afternoon to make an artificial reef for fishing.

Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Kate Jones says it was the safest option.

“Once it had broken two of its four moorings, the decision was made that it was taking water, and the safest and best option was to take it to its new home at Harry Atkinson Reef,” she said.

“This is something that the recreational fishing industry wanted,” she said.

“We agreed to deliver six artificial reefs across Moreton Bay and the sinking of the Tiwi Pearl will be the first of those.”

State Govt’s sinking ship

The State Government says a boat to be sunk in Moreton Bay at the weekend has been moved into place.

The former tuna fishing boat the Tiwi Pearl will be sunk east of St Helena Island at about 9.00am (AEST) on Sunday.

Sustainability Minister Kate Jones says the boat will be flooded instead of being blown up.

“Rather than using explosives the Tiwi Pearl will partially be filled with concrete,” she said.

“On Sunday morning several valves in the hull will be released causing the scuttling of the ship.”

Ms Jones says it is part of an extension to the Harry Atkinson Reef.

“This is something that the recreational fishing industry wanted,” she said.

“We agreed to deliver six artificial reefs across Moreton Bay and the sinking of the Tiwi Pearl will be the first of those.”

Ms Jones says boaties are being encouraged to come along to watch the sinking.

Rang barse, bheege chunariya in Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO: The earth was green. The sky was black. The rain came down in red, blue and purple sheets of water. The air was pink with gulal. And there was Rang barse, bheege chunar waali – written by a Bachchan, sung by a Bachchan – pulsating the cold, wet air of Sao Paulo. While 1.1 billion people were probably sleeping on the eve of Holi some 15,000 km away, the small Indian community of this megapolis painted the Sao Paulo Athletic Club red with their colours and songs as a German DJ belted out the best bhangra numbers.

The Brazilian rugby players, roughing it out on a pitch nearby, constantly threw curious glances at the “Indian carnival” party in full flow on Sunday morning in the heart of this megapolis.

It was a rainy day. It’s summer here but the mercury is happy to be at 22 degrees. When we arrived at the club at 10.30 in morning with George Matthew, an Indian who teaches English here, there was hardly anyone at the venue except for Kesavan Nair, one of the directors of the Indian Association of Sao Paulo.

2 Charged With Murder After Deadly Ill. ‘Greed’ Fire

MAYWOOD, Ill. — Prosecutors say the owner of an apartment building in a Chicago suburb had his maintenance man set it on fire, killing seven people, because he wanted to collect the insurance money.

Prosecutors say the owner told police he wanted the building burned when the children living there were at school. Instead, they allege, the maintenance man started the fire on a Sunday morning when residents were asleep.

Cook County state’s attorney Anita Alvarez says the Feb. 14 fire was motivated by “sheer greed.” She says the owner had an insurance policy on the building worth $250,000.

The owner, 60-year-old Lawrence Myers, and the maintenance man, 47-year-old Marion Comier, are charged with murder and arson. They pleaded not guilty Friday and were ordered held without bond.

Victoria Police deny Indian bashing cover-up

Melbourne, Sep.16 (ANI): Victoria Police has denied they had a plan to limit publicity about the bashing of four Indian men outside a Melbourne pub on Saturday night.

Four men were arrested in relation to assault and affray, but they were released pending further investigations.

Police believe a fifth man may also have been involved in the bashing outside a pub at Epping in Melbourne’s east.

Details of the incident only emerged publicly today, prompting an outraged Indian media to claim Victoria Police had been involved in a cover-up.

Police said the Indian media were made aware of the incident via “other channels”.

Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Parker said there was no cover-up, although he did admit the police media department would have known about the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Unfortunately, this type of incident occurs regularly. This is really treated no differently to any other event of this type. There has been no deliberate attempt to suppress it. It’s just part of normal procedure. It’s attracted more media attention than anticipated,” news.com.au quoted him, as saying.

According to the police, the four men were playing pool on Saturday night at a bar in High St, Epping, when a female hurled a racist remark at them.

The men left not long after but were followed into a car park by up to four males who were part of a larger group celebrating a birthday in the bar’s function room.

It has been alleged the Indian men were set upon and seriously assaulted by the group of males.

Police were called and arrested four males, who were interviewed in relation to assault and affray. ll four were released pending further investigations.

While only four men were arrested, one of the alleged victims told ABC Radio today that more than 70 people could have been involved.

He said the attackers didn’t use weapons, but racism was behind the incident.

“Definitely racism,” he said.

Police say that when the arrests were made, a group of about 15 men and women, who had been celebrating a birthday, directed racist abuse at the Indian men.

As the victims were escorted away by police, officers allege the larger group continued its “threatening behaviour and racist remarks”. (ANI)
