Terry tells French they were wrong to expel Anelka

(Reuters) – France made a mistake in expelling striker Nicolas Anelka from their World Cup squad, his Chelsea captain and former England skipper John Terry said on Sunday.

Sports

Terry told reporters at England’s World Cup base at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus that he admired Anelka as a player and as a man and felt it was wrong to send him home on Saturday.

He said: “I see they sent him home for voicing his opinion and maybe a few of us (England players) will be sent home after this evening!”

Anelka was sent home after allegedly insulting France coach Raymond Domenech last Thursday during their 2-0 defeat by Mexico in a Group A game at Polokwane.

Terry was referring to a planned crisis meeting of the England squad with manager Fabio Capello scheduled to take place later on Sunday evening.

He added: “But I can speak honestly about Nico. He is a really good guy.

“Before he came to Chelsea, a lot negative stuff was written about him but as a person you won’t find a better man in football.

“He is very quiet but he has been in the game a long time and he knows his football so, if Nico had something to say to me, I would stand up and listen — because he is a great player as well

“It is obviously the wrong decision.”

Gadkari calls for adequate security for Sri Sri

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Monday urged Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to provide adequate security cover to Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar and said he was ‘deeply disturbed’ by the shooting incident in his ashram.

In a letter to Yeddyurappa, Gadkari said: ‘The shocking incident of firing by an unidentified gunman at the convoy of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar-ji in Bangalore… has deeply disturbed me.’

He also urged the central government to provide adequate security cover to the spiritual guru, who has millions of followers in the country and abroad.

A gunman allegedly opened fire inside the ashram, on the outskirts of Bangalore, as the guru left after delivering a discourse Sunday evening. He was in the car when the shot was fired.

‘I strongly condemn this cowardly act on the part of unscrupulous elements,’ the BJP chief wrote, adding: ‘I am confident your government will book the culprits at the earliest. I have heaved a sigh of relief that the Art of Living Guru escaped unhurt… His safety and well-being is paramount. We should not spare any effort in ensuring his security.’

Fire doused on German ship; passengers, crew safe

Oslo, May 29 (DPA) A fire that forced the evacuation of the passengers and crew from the German cruise ship Deutschland in western Norweigian waters was extinguished late Friday, hours after the blaze broke out in an engine room, Norwegian officials said.

The Norwegian news agency NTB said that 607 people – all passengers and most of the crew – were evacuated in the harbour of Eidfjord, some 200 km north-west of Oslo.

Those evacuated included 364 passengers, who were mostly German, 241 crew members and two Norwegian pilots who were on board when the fire started.

‘So far there are no reports of injuries,’ Per Fjeld, spokesman for the rescue headquarters, told the German Press Agency dpa.

The evacuation of the passengers and crew from the ship to land had been carried out in orderly fashion, he said.

The passengers are to be flown home Monday.

The fire broke out 12.30 p.m. (1030 GMT), with the cause not yet determined. Officials said that the vessel’s fire-proof doors had all held, preventing the blaze from spreading throughout the vessel.

Specialised marine firefighters were called in from Norway’s second-largest city, Bergen, helping to bring the blaze under control.

The 175-metre-long Deutschland – dubbed a ‘floating 5-star hotel’ – is the flagship of the northern German shipping firm Deilmann. It was being towed overnight Sunday to Bergan for further inspection of the damage.

The Deutschland had been due to depart Eidfjord on Sunday evening for Hamburg. It was scheduled to leave Tuesday from Hamburg on a cruise to London and Scotland.

Former IOC president Samaranch dies at 89

Barcelona, April 22 (IANS) Former International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch has died in a hospital here Wednesday. He was 89.

Samaranch, who had suffered heart and breathing problems in recent months, was taken to the Quiron hospital after feeling unwell Sunday evening. Although he was able to walk into the hospital, his condition worsened considerably Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

Samaranch died of coronary and respiratory failure Wednesday, just a few minutes after the hospital issued a statement saying he had gone into ‘irreversible shock’, and was in a critical condition.

His body will be taken to the Palau de la Generalitat in Barcelona so that well wishers can pay their last respects Thursday.

Many believe Samaranch, who was IOC chief between 1980 and 2001, was responsible for the Olympic Games as we know them today.

His last public appearance was on March 4 this year when was awarded Hispano-Chinese Foundation prize for his time as president of the Hispano-Chinese Forum, which he led since November 2001.

IOC President Jacques Rogge hailed Samaranch’s contribution to the Olympic movement, describing him as ‘a great man, a mentor and a friend who dedicated his long and fulfilled life to Olympism’.

‘I cannot find the words to express the distress of the Olympic family,’ said Rogge. ‘I am personally deeply saddened by the death of the man who built up the Olympic Games of the modern era, a man who inspired me, and whose knowledge of sport was truly exceptional.’

‘Thanks to his extraordinary vision and talent, Samaranch was the architect of a strong and unified Olympic Movement. I can only pay tribute to his tremendous achievements and legacy, and praise his genuine devotion to the Olympic Movement and its values. We have lost a great man, a mentor and a friend who dedicated his long and fulfilled life to Olympism,’Rogge added.

Born in Barcelona in 1920, Samaranch pursued a career as diplomat and sports administrator before leading the IOC for 21 years from 1980 to 2001.

Soon after his election, Samaranch worked towards the abolition of amateurism at the Olympic Games. Despite two boycotts in Moscow in 1980 and in Los Angeles in 1984, Samaranch managed to maintain the quality of the Games and increased the number of participating countries.

The IOC said in the statement Samaranch was responsible for the new IOC headquarters building in Vidy and for inaugurating The Olympic Museum in Lausanne. He also championed the representation of women in the IOC, overseeing the entry of the first women members in the 1980s.

He was also responsible for setting up the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and for involving the athletes themselves in the decision-making of the IOC by creating the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

‘UFO’ pictured above Sydney

Melbourne, March 24 (ANI): Another UFO sighting has been reported from Sydney where a mum of two captured the mysterious object in a photograph.

Fiona Hartigan is convinced what she saw was a UFO and she says the snaps she took are proof enough.

According to Hartigan, the incident took place on Sunday evening when she was about to click a few sunset photos.

“As I was about to take the picture this black object appeared and then it started to move,” News.com.au quoted her, as saying.

She went on: “It started off about 800m away but it came closer – to about 400m – and then two other little round things appeared from this bright orange light above.

“There was no noise. It was calm and peaceful but it was very weird.”

Hartigan claims the main UFO then flew away above Governor Macquarie Drive at Chipping Norton, with the smaller ones whizzed in the opposite direction.

She said: “I don”t know how to explain it – I”m still totally bewildered.”

Talking about the sighting and the photos UFO Research NSW spokesman Doug Moffett said: “It could be some electrical anomaly that no one has ever seen, it could be an extra-terrestrial craft, it could be something else.

“There does appear to be a blur around the image, which could just be the way it”s shaped, or – and this is pure speculation – it could be due to its propulsion system.”

He added: “Whatever the case, it”s an opportunity to learn something new.”

Chile’s power grid unstable for a week: president

(Reuters) – Chile’s main power grid will remain “unstable” for the next seven days, President Sebastian Pinera said on Monday, a day after a massive outage left most the world’s top copper producer in the dark.

World | Natural Disasters

Millions of Chileans were left without power on Sunday evening after a transformer failed in the electricity grid, two weeks after a devastating earthquake killed hundreds and mangled roads and bridges in the South American country.

“We’re committed to repair the damaged transformer within the next 48 hours and the lines that may have been affected should be checked and repaired within the next seven days,” Pinera said.

“As it was the case following the earthquake on February 27, in the next seven days we’re going to have an unstable power system,” he added.

Electricity was gradually restored on Sunday evening, but the failure of the South American country’s main power grid is another test for conservative Pinera, who took office last week on pledges to rebuild Chile after the huge earthquake, which caused an estimated $20 billion to $30 billion in damage.

“Power crisis problem in Delhi to improve soon,” says Shiela Dikshit

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): The national capital, which is facing its worst power outages in recent times, with mercury breaching the 40 degrees Celsius mark everyday, was on Sunday assured of relief in a couple of days by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.

A meeting of top officials was held by Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit on Sunday to find ways to resolve the power crisis in the city,

“Firstly central government has given us 150 MW extra power from its central pool. Hopefully we would receive it by today (Sunday) evening. Secondly we were not able to get 500 MW from Mandola power plant since it was out of order. But now we would get only 350 MW from there since its one or two transmission towers are still under repair. So with all this city would get a bit of relief,” said Sheila Dikshit.

Power demand has shot up to an all-time high of about 4275 MW, leaving a huge shortfall. Several areas have been facing frequent power cuts, with some lasting for 10 to 12 hours. The crisis has also led to severe water shortage in most parts of the city.

Dikshit, who had to face severe criticism from local residents, added that power distribution companies have been warned to improve the response time in attending to complaints.

“I and central government have given them time of four days saying that if we don’t see any improvement then some strict measures would be taken,” said Dikshit.

Delhi expects to get 250 MW more power from Uttarakhand by Monday. (ANI)

Satyam – Tech Mahindra renamed Satyam – Satyam -Mahindra group and inherent strength of Satyam brand – Satyam Computers is now Mahindra Satyam – scam-tainted Satyam Computer Services – scam-tainted

June 21 (IANS) Two months after taking over scam-tainted Satyam Computer Services, Tech Mahindra Sunday renamed the IT major as Mahindra Satyam. The logo will be adopted from the Mahindra Group. “This strategic move paves the way for the emergence of a robust brand, which draws from the core values of the Mahindra group and the inherent strength of the Satyam brand,” said a company statement here Sunday evening.

“Customer centricity, high standards of corporate governance, unimpeachable ethics form the cornerstones of the Mahindra Group,” said Mahindra Group vice chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra.

“This rebranding exercise symbolizes an amalgamation of the Mahindra Group’s values with Satyam’s fabled expertise, even as it retains that part of Satyam’s identity which signifies commitment, purpose and proficiency of the organization and its people,” the statement said.

Satyam’s executive vice chairman Vineet Nayyar described the move as “a significant milestone towards the recovery of the company”.

Tech Mahindra, owned by the $6.3 billion Mahindra Group, bought the scam-hit IT company in an open auction in April.

The re-branding comes six months after Satyam’s founder and then chairman B. Ramalinga Raju confessed to a Rs.78-billion accounting fraud.

The government launched a probe, superseded the board, and put the company up for sale in open auction.

Ramalinga Raju, his brother Rama Raju, former chief financial officer Vadlamani Srinivas and five other accused are currently in jail.

Indian student beatings on the rise in Australia, says community leader

Sydney, May 29 (ANI): The Indian Government has been forced to take steps to assure the safety of Indian students in Australia after a series of attacks on them, a community leader has said.

Dr. Yadu Singh said there had been at least 20 bashings of Indian students in Sydney in the last month alone, but most went unreported out of fear. He estimated over 100 attacks on Indian students in the last 12 months.

“There’s a name for this … ‘curry bashing’, ‘lets go curry bashing’. They are not random at all and the people are targeting them. They know these students are easy targets,” he said.

The revelations follow a strong response by the Indian Government to an apparently racially motivated attack on four Indian students in Melbourne, which left one student fighting for his life in hospital.

Under instructions from the Indian Government, the Indian Consulate in Sydney has formed a committee to address the concerns about the welfare of Indian students in Australia, said Dr Singh, who is the head of the committee.

“Melbourne has a bigger problem but if we don’t do something in Sydney it will be repeated here,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Dr Singh, as saying.

He said he was aware of numerous robbing and random bashings on Indian students at night and in daylight, on trains and near their homes, often in western Sydney.

On Sunday evening, hospitality graduate Rajesh Kumar received burns to 30 per cent of his body when a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of the Harris Park home he shared with other Indians.

Dr. Singh said the attacks had been happening for about four years, and were a mixture of opportunistic robberies and outright racists attacks.

Many students were also afraid that lodging any sort of formal police report would harm their chances at permanent residency.

“So they will suffer the humiliation and the insult … and the criminals think:

We are pretty safe robbing them and nothing will happen,” Dr. Singh said. (ANI)
