MJ’s mother wins will ruling

London, September 19 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine can challenge the administrators of the singer’s estate without any threat to her 40 per cent stake, a judge has ruled.

The 79-year-old’s legal team said that she wants to have more say over the manner in which the 400 million dollar estate is handled.

According to the ruling, the King of Pop’s mum will not breach a ‘no contest’ clause in the family trust if she sets up a challenge before the executors over Jackson’s will, reports the Sun.

Katherine is the legal guardian of the star’s children, Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II, after his sudden death on June 25.

She will receive more than 1 million dollars a year from his estate including a sum of 26,804 dollars a month for herself apart from a monthly allowance of 60,000 dollars for the three kids, as per the court’s order. (ANI)

Rachel Stevens wins ‘Rear Of The Year’ award

London, September 16 (ANI): British Singer Rachel Stevens has been named this year’s winner of the Rear Of The Year award.

The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star was voted as the favourite for the cheeky title, while tenor Russell Watson topped the men’s category.

“I’m very flattered and I’m now going to insure each cheek for a considerable sum of money,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

Watson also said: “For the past 10 years it’s always been about The Voice but, for the first time, I’m delighted to say it’s about my rear.”

Award organiser Tony Edwards said: “They’ve both been high on the list of contenders for the past few years but this year broke through with amazing support. This is the era of the well-toned rear when people are taking care of their bodies with work-outs, jogging, and aerobics. Rachel and Russell typify the look.” (ANI)

Lee declares his goal for breaking 100 mph bowling speed barrier

London, Sep.14 (ANI): Fresh from destroying England with a scorching display of fast, swinging yorkers that skittled stumps all over Lord’s to help Australia seal a series-clinching 4-0 lead with three ODIs remaining, Brett Lee has declared his goal of breaking the 100mph (160.93km/h) speed barrier.

That feat would be worth a fair sum for a fast bowler who has already earned three million dollars in the past 12 months, according to Forbes magazine.

Lee could not force his way back into the side for the Ashes series and his Test future remains unclear but the 32-year-old remains far more marketable than his bowling peers.

The combination of blond-haired, blue-eyed good looks and sheer speed is an irresistible combination for some brands.

To date, only Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar has broken the 100mph limit, clocking 100.2mph (161.3km/h) during a World Cup match against England in 2003. Lee’s fastest delivery was recorded at 99.8mph (160.7km/h) at the same tournament.

“I know I’m in the team to try and bowl fast, there’s always talk about your age but I’m feeling really fit, probably the fittest I’ve ever felt,” Lee said after taking 5-49 at Lord’s on Saturday, clean-bowling four victims.

“I’m only 32 and I want to keep bowling in excess of 90mph for a long time yet but we’ll wait and see what happens with the body,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Soon, ‘robobees’ that mimic bees’ behaviour

Washington, Sep 13 (ANI): A Northeastern University neurobiologist is collaborating with Harvard University researchers to develop micro flying robots that will emulate the bees’ brain, body and collective behaviour.

Biology professor Joseph Ayers would create robots, called the robobees, which would mimic the communal feeding behaviour of bee colonies.

The project will draw on the knowledge of computer scientists, engineers, and biologists to construct an electronic nervous system, a supervisory architecture and a high-energy source to power the innovative robots.

“This project will integrate the efforts and expertise of a diverse team of investigators to create a system that far transcends the sum of its parts. We expect substantial advances in basic science at the intersection of these seemingly disparate disciplines to result from this effort,” said Ayers.

Inspired by the biology of the bee and the insect’s colonial behaviour, the project aims to advance miniature robotics and the design of compact high-energy power sources.

The project would also spur innovations in ultra-low-power computing and electronic “smart” sensors that mediate biomimetic control.

In addition, it would refine coordination algorithms to manage multiple, independent machines.

Ayers is widely known for his work in biomimetics- the science of adapting the control systems found in nature to inform design of engineered systems to solve real-world problems-including the development of RoboLobster and RoboLamprey.

The autonomous, biomimetic underwater robotic models emulate the operations of the animals’ nervous systems using an electronic controller based on nonlinear, moving models of neurons and synapses.

“Animals have evolved to occupy every environmental niche where we would hope to operate robots, save outer space. They provide proven solutions to problems that confound even the most sophisticated robots, and our challenge is to capture these performance advantages in engineered devices,” said Ayers. (ANI)

Poor money savers likely to be overeaters, smokers, love cheats

Washington, Sept 4 (ANI): People who are poor at saving money are likely to have impulsive behaviour such as overeating, smoking and infidelity, according to a new study.

The study conducted through the BBC website measured people’s financial impulsivity by asking whether they would they prefer to receive 45 pounds in three days or 70 pounds in three months.

The findings revealed that nearly half of those who preferred the smaller-sooner sum of money were more likely to show a raft of other impulsive behaviours.

“One of the big questions about people’s financial planning is whether decisions to spend or save come from personal knowledge and experience of money matters or whether they reflect someone’s personality more generally,” said Dr Stian Reimers, ESRC Centre for Economic Learning and Social Evolution at UCL.

“Our research shows that people with an impulsive money-today attitude ignore the future in other ways.

“For example, they are more likely to smoke and more likely to be overweight, which may reflect a preference for immediate pleasure of nicotine and food over long-term good health,” Reimers added.

Moreover, people who chose to take the smaller-sooner amount of money were also more likely to admit to having had an affair in recent years.

The study also showed that those most likely to make impulsive financial choices were young, poorly educated, and on lower incomes.

“Learning to make decisions that lead to long-term happiness, not just instantaneous gratification, could benefit us all. Simple techniques can help reduce impulsivity: like imagining how you’d feel about your decision in a year’s time, or trying to avoid making decisions in the heat of the moment,” Reimers added.

The study appears in journal Personality and Individual Differences. (ANI)

Lucknow police raid more places to uncover illegal blood racket

Lucknow, Aug 25 (ANI): Lucknow police has raided a private hospital here and recovered a few packets of illegal blood.

“We have found two-three packets of blood. We have also recovered equipments used to collect blood. Nobody is present here for interrogation at present,” said Sunil Pal, Inspector, Sarojni Nagar, Lucknow.

On August 22, six persons allegedly involved in running a blood racket were arrested from the city.

At least 70 pouches containing blood along with plasma, empty pouches, syringes and fake stamps, stickers and authority letters of the Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University were recovered from the possession of the accused on August 22.

Police is probing over a dozen private-run nursing homes and pathology labs involved in trafficking illegal blood.

Trading in blood or organs is illegal in India. While organs can be obtained only by donation, blood can be voluntarily bartered or bought from registered blood banks. Blood banks are regulated by the government as many unscrupulous dealers fleece poor people, buying blood and paying them only a paltry sum. (ANI)

New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): For modernization of police force in the States, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has proposed an additional amount of Rs. 430 crore over and above the provision in the Interim Budget.

While presenting the Budget proposals for the year 2009-10 in Lok Sabha today, Mukherjee said that the Government has also sanctioned special risk/hardship allowances to the personnel of Para Military Forces at par with Defence Forces.

“Provisions for payment of these allowances are also being proposed in the Budget, he added.

For strengthening Border Management, Mukherjee proposed an additional amount of Rs. 2,284 crore over and above the provision for construction of fences, roads, flood-lights on the international borders.

Keeping in view, the significant augmentation in the strength of Para Military Forces, Mukherjee called for more investment in creating the necessary infrastructure, particularly in the area of housing.

He said the Government proposed to launch a massive programme of housing to create one lakh dwelling units for Central Para Military Forces Personnel.

“This will not only enhance the morale of the forces, but will also enable leveraging of Government’s annual budgetary resources and create an innovative financing model,” he added. (ANI)

Cameron Diaz rounded off the top five after raking in 20 million dollars in the last 12 months. (ANI)

Jacko’s ex-wife wants full custody of kids

London, June 27 (ANI): Late Michael Jackson’s ex-wife Debbie Rowe is seeking full custody of the couple’s children.

The King of Pop passed away at the age of 50 on Thursday (June 25) after a cardiac arrest apparently caused by an overdose of painkillers.

Soon after his death Jackson’s elderly mum Katherine and Debbie were set to launch into a bitter fight for custody of his children.

While Katherine was looking after Prince Michael Jnr, 12, Paris, 11, and seven-year-old Prince Michael II in Los Angeles, Debbie had apparently signed away her parental rights in return for a house and a multi-million dollar lump sum.

Jackson family lawyer Brian Oxman said Katherine would probably care for them long-term.

“She loves them dearly,” British tabloid the Sun quoted him as saying.

However, Debbie-who is the mother of Prince Jnr and Paris-had told a friend that she wanted full custody of the youngsters, just two days before Jacko’s death.

The friend revealed: “Debbie threw a fit, saying she was sick of the way Michael was bringing the children up. She said she was going to go for full custody of them. She said she was quite prepared to go all the way and fight him in court for it.”

In fact, the kids’ nanny Grace Rwaramba could also end up caring for them.

Sources close to the Jackson family said Katherine will “fight tooth and nail” to stop Debbie getting the youngsters.

Debbie’s friend said: “She understands there will be a vicious legal battle and she knows Michael’s mother will not readily hand the kids over to her. But she is their natural mother and will do whatever it takes to get them back.”

Last December, Debbie, 50, went to lawyers after Jacko’s biographer claimed that the star was suffering from a chronic lung condition and had just months to live.

She asked for more access to her children, saying: “I’m their mother and they need me.”

And now that the ‘Thriller’ hit-maker is dead, the friend said that Debbie wants her kids back for good.

The pal added: “At Christmas she just wanted to re-establish contact with them. But now she wants full custody. Michael’s mother is almost 80, Debbie doesn’t want them to lose their father and then their grandmother.”

Prince Michael Jnr and Paris were born during Debbie’s three-year marriage to Jacko in the 1990s.

Prince Michael II – nicknamed “Blanket” – was born later to a surrogate mother. (ANI)

Prince Harry ‘to step up’ fundraising visits to America

London, June 22 (ANI): Prince Harry will reportedly increase his fundraising visits across the Atlantic to support events organised by the newly established American leg of his charity Sentebale.

The 24-year-old, who credits his late mother Princess Diana for inspiring him to continue his work for AIDS victims, touched hearts during a celebrity fundraising dinner in New York last month.

And the royal is now said to be looking to step up his own activities in the US to boost his charity.

“Harry’s polo match was a big success and raised a substantial six-figure sum. He is keen for the American Friends of Sentebale to build on that success,” the Telegraph quoted a friend as saying.

Several A-listers attended Harry’s polo match, including Madonna and Jennifer Lopez.

The pal added: “The trustees of the American Friends now have the technical means to hold their own fund-raising events and, of course, Harry will do his best to support them. He was delighted with his reception there.” (ANI)

Chelsea to launch 50 million pound bid for Torres

London, June 21 (ANI): Chelsea is ready to test Liverpool’s resolve with a 50 million pound bid for Fernando Torres.

Carlo Ancelotti has already targeted Torres’ Spain strike partner David Villa, offering Valencia 35 million pound.

Now, the Blues boss is ready to make an audacious attempt to unite Villa and Torres at club level. iverpool manager Rafa Benitez will do all he can to block the move. But he is worried the huge sum offered by Chelsea could tempt American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Liverpool’s true financial state will be revealed over the coming weeks and Benitez is beginning to fear the worst, The Sun reports.

At the end of the season Benitez was hopeful of landing 27-year-old Villa. Now he not only has to face up to Chelsea signing Villa, but also targeting Torres.

Villa’s proposed move to Real Madrid has not gone through because Chelsea’s bid is 4 million pound higher and is preferred by debt- ridden Valencia.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to take advantage of Liverpool’s own money worries by making the sort of offer he hopes Gillett and Hicks will not be able to refuse.t is understood a tentative inquiry was made by a third party in April about how much it would cost to prise Torres away from Anfield.

The message from Liverpool at the time was that there was no chance of Torres being sold. Then in May the 25-year-old striker signed an improved deal to 2013.

If necessary, Ancelotti and Abramovich will settle for just landing Villa. But if there is even an outside chance of snatching Torres away from Anfield, they will take it. (ANI)

Aurangabad farmers fear deers

Aurangabad, May 20 (ANI): Farmers in Aurangabad region of Maharashtra have sought compensation from the State Government as thousands of deer have damaged their crops after sneaking from nearby forest areas.

The deer have destroyed the cotton and orange crops but also the grass surrounding the agricultural lands which the farmers use for their livestock.

“The deer are destroying our crops. They eat up all the grass. They also destroying the cotton and the orange crop. We, the farmers are facing a lot of problem since the past three to four years. The officials of the forest department come and after a lot of surveying register the losses. After all this they give a meagre compensation amount of rupees 50 to rupees 100,” said Anna Shinde, a farmer.

Consequently, the farmers sat on a protest recently demanding compensation from the Forest Department for the losses incurred by them.

Officials of the Forest Department claimed that they have distributed almost 10 million to the farmers whereas each farmer gets a meagre sum of rupees 50 to 100 which they contend is peanuts when compared to the losses incurred by them.

Meanwhile, the Central Government has approved a project for the translocation of the deer.

However, the provisional project is only for a 100 out of the thousands of deer which are destroying the crops.

“There are two programmes for relief. First is compensation. We have given compensation to the farmers amounting to more than 10 million. Secondly, the long term program is to translocate the deer’s. They can be translocated to Karanja Sohal sanctuary. We recently got approval from the Central Government for this program,” said B.S. Hooda, Conservator of Forests, Aurangabad.

The farmers have been facing this problem for the past half a decade.

The farmers believe that the Forest Department needs to take more concrete steps before more and more crops fall prey to the herds of deer.

As per prevailing law, killing of deer for the venison meat is a penal offence in India. By Abdul Hadi (ANI)

Radical insiders, not Taliban real threat to Pak nukes: Experts

Islamabad, May 16 (ANI): There has been a persistent tension in the international community regarding the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, and fears about it falling into the hands of the Taliban and other extremists has kept the world on tenterhooks.

If concerns of experts are anything to go by, the real danger to Pakistan’s nuclear establishments does not comes from extremists but from radical insiders within the government.

Head of the Physics Department at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad Prof. Pervez Hoodbhoy believes that the radicals among the educated, potential insiders, are in a more realistic position to abscond with nuclear material .

They are far more threatening than the extremists as they also know how to use the weapons, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

“The threat comes not from the ‘mountain barbarians’, but from Al Qaeda, together with their Islamist allies within the Pakistani state and society. These are urban people, engineers, technicians, people in fairly high offices,” Prof. Hoodbhoy said.

The United States has spent over 100 million dollars to help Pakistan beef up its nuclear security, but question still looms large over how safe these establishments are.

Former head of nuclear intelligence at the US Department of Energy, Rolf Mowatt-Larssen said there was not much transparency over how and where such a huge sum was spent.

“There’s not a lot of transparency into it, and going into it I think the US felt like that was acceptable,” Larssen said.

Larssen also believes that the real threat was from the insiders rather than outsiders snatching a usable warhead.

“My big concern is the insider threat combined with outsiders,” he said. (ANI)

Pak Cabinet endorses operation against Taliban in Swat

Islamabad, May 9 (ANI): The Pakistan Cabinet on Saturday endorsed the ongoing military operation against the Taliban and other militants in the Malakand division of the country’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

In a media briefing following the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said the cabinet has decided to set up a PM fund for the affectees of military operation with a sum of Rs.200 million deposited.

Gilani said the directives had been issued to all Pakistani missions abroad to step up efforts for global assistance for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

He also announced that the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) and the ministry of health have been directed to take care of the IDPs.

He said a parliamentary delegation will be sent to variouis capital to project Pakistan’s viewpoint on prevailing situation.

The Prime Minister’s announcement came as the Pakistani Army continues to press ahead with a vigorous offensive against the Taliban militants who have taken control of a broad swath of territory northwest of the capital, sending tens of thousands of Pakistanis fleeing the fighting.

According to the New York Times, the exodus – by truck, car, foot and horse cart – has reached close to 200,000 people, forcing relief workers to erect new rows of tents in camps along the clotted road running south from the Swat Valley.

Relief officials said as many as 300,000 people were moving or preparing to flee.

The unfolding humanitarian crisis has prompted the Pakistani Army to move with caution against over 4000 Taliban militants in Swat, the epicenter of a power struggle over months between government forces and the militants.

Army officers said they were confronting the militants, as they have taken advantage of a peace agreement to seize control of much of the district and its government buildings.

At the military’s headquarters in Rawalpindi, Major General Athar Abbas made few claims of territorial progress on Friday. He said that helicopters strafed militants in Swat over the previous 24 hours, and that 140 militants and 7 Pakistani soldiers had been killed.

“They are on the run and trying to block the exodus of innocent civilians by preventing their departure through coercion,” Major General Abbas said.

Militant resistance in neighboring Buner, just 60 miles from Islamabad, has decreased considerably, Major General Abbas said. He said the military had lifted a curfew in Buner to allow civilians to escape toward Mardan and other areas. (ANI)

Booze charge leaves bad taste in the mouths of IPL fans

Johannesburg, May 3 (ANI): Organizers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have left a bad taste in the mouth of fans by imposing a pouring charge on the sale of alcohol at the Wanderers Ground here on Saturday.

For the sum of 40 000 dollars, a mere 0.001 percent of the IPL’s declared turnover of 2.4 billion dollars, the company who has the tender to sell alcohol at the Wanderers – Events Management – will be allowed to provide thirsty spectators with their tipple.

But what should be an utterly meaningless amount for the IPL is going to put the financial well being of a long-standing service provider to cricket in Johannesburg at risk – Rand 336 800, reports Sports24.

So while the IPL gorges itself on South African hospitality, it is making few friends amongst local cricket administrators or suppliers.

The Gauteng Cricket Board and the suite-holders at the Wanderers were earlier involved in a nasty tussle with the IPL, who had demanded all suites be handed over to them for their use.

Some senior Gauteng Cricket Board executives decided to stay away from the Wanderers in protest, after the IPL, with the tacit approval of Cricket South Africa, threatened to ban the sale of all alcohol at the stadium unless the pouring fee was paid.

It was also noticeable that only about a quarter of the suites at the ground had people in them, while there were many empty seats in the Unity Stand.

SA Breweries officials said the licensees at the Wanderers make a profit of Rand 6 a beer so, in order to just break even, they will need to sell 56 134 beers in the eight matches to be staged there. So that means over 7 000 drinks per game.

Perhaps the small change does matter more to the IPL in these times of recession than Modi and his crew are letting on. (ANI)

Taliban agrees to release Polish geologist’s dead body

Islamabad, Apr.24 (ANI): The Taliban’s Darra Adamkhel chapter has agreed to hand over the dead body of Polish geologist Peter Stanczak to the government authorities.

“Talks over handing over of the Polish geologist’s body had been finalized and the issue would be resolved in couple of days,” the Dawn quoted a Taliban spokesman Muhammad, as saying.

Muhammad said that the decision was made after the Taliban Shoora (council) agreed over it.

According to the sources, the Taliban agreed to hand over Stanczak’s body only after the government accepted its demand for a huge sum of money.

Polish geologist, Peter Stanczak was kidnapped from Attock district in September last year. He was beheaded by the Taliban in February 2009 after negotiations between the abductors and Pakistan authorities failed. (ANI)

Slumdog’s ‘Jai Ho’ Trust hires social worker to look after Rubina Ali

Washington, Apr 22 (ANI): Slumdog Millionaire trust has come out to the rescue of the film’s child star Rubina Ali by hiring a social worker to look after her.

The Jai Ho Trust was established with financial support from the filmmakers to ensure the welfare of the movie’s child stars, including Rubina and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail.

The trust has offered to help by hiring a trained social worker to look after the welfare of Rubina – amid allegations that the nine-year-old girl’s father Rafiq tried to sell her for 2,00,000 pounds.

However, Rafiq has denied the claims.

“Both Danny [Boyle, the director] and I remain committed to working the trust and the family to secure Rubina’s long-term best interests,” Usmagazine quoted Slumdog producer Christian Colson as saying.

One of the Jai Ho trustees, Noshir H. Dadrawala, said that “the trust will support Rubina, her parents and responsible authorities to ensure that the rights and best interests of Rubina” are protected.

“The trust is in regular contact with Rubina Ali and her family and has hired a social worker to assist in looking after her welfare and that of her co-star,” he added.

“Danny and I both fully support Mr. Dadrawala’s comments,” said Colson.

The independent trust was set up to ensure that the family of the child stars receive suitable accommodations and a fixed sum of money each month for living expenses.

It also covers the education costs for Rubina and her siblings and provides her with a lump sum of money after she turns 18 years old. (ANI)

Klasnic rejects Bremen settlement as he he seeks the truth

Bremen, Germany – Croatian footballer Ivan Klasnic on Friday rejected a settlement in a dispute with his former club Werder Bremen over his kidney problems which eventually led to a transplant.

Klasnic said he reject an offer of 350,000 euros (462,000 dollars) made by a Bremen judge not because the sum was too small but rather because he wants Bremen team doctors to acknowledge that they did not treat him properly.

“I could have died on the pitch … I want justice to win and the truth to be revealed,” Klasnic said.

The team doctors have protested their innocence in the case in which Klasnic wants 1.1 million euros in compensation after missing one year of football as he underwent two kidney transplants in 2007.

Klasnic left Bremen last year to play for French club Nantes. (dpa)
