Oz politician ‘sick of being sexualised’ by female NSW Premier

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): Australian politician and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly Adrian Piccoli is enraged over New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally’s remarks about his hair and suits.

The politician said he is sick of being “sexualised” and was fed-up with Keneally”s comments about his suits and his lack of hair across the floor of the NSW Parliamentary Bear Pit.

Things came to a head when Piccoli asked Speaker Richard Torbay to intervene after the latest taunt.

“I take great offence at constantly being sexualised by the Premier. If it”s not my suits, it”s my hair,” News.com.au quoted Mr Piccoli as saying.

Piccoli later called out that he was “happily married” and Keneally could be heard to retort, “Oh, you wish”.

Former sex discrimination commissioner Pru Goward, who is now a Liberal MP, said the Premier”s behaviour would be considered unacceptable other workplaces.

“This is a particular job, it is not an average job. Most Australians in their workplaces are not allowed to do this sort of thing,” she said.

“What happens in Parliament is privileged but the truth is in any other workplace if a boss or a peer in public ridiculed somebody along those lines, not just once but frequently – she does it every week – it wouldn”t be accepted behaviour, people just would not get away with it.”

“We”ve been very conscious not to refer to anything about her dress,” Piccoli said.

“Nobody makes reference to the way she dresses. I referred to her hair once after she referred to mine.”

Speaker Richard Torbay told Mr Piccoli in his three years controlling the Bear Pit of State Parliament it was “the worst point of order” he had ever heard. (ANI)

Brit mum comes up with Indian curry slimming group!

London, May 08 (ANI): Curries made with Indian spices can help you shed extra kilos that’s the claim of British mum Suki Burai.

The spice-loving mum dished up Britain’s first curry slimming group after dropping three stone (19kg) on the diet, reports the Daily Star.

Burai from Wyken, Coventry, came up with a menu of healthy Indian recipes for her members, stating that it can really make people drop few kilos.

The chilli-hot meals include tandoori fish curry, chapattis and tasty lentil dishes.

“I spent years on failed diets, but I started making my own recipes with different ingredients,” said the 41-year-old. “I could enjoy curries on a regular basis and still lose weight.

“The recipes are quick and easy to make, which suits a lot of women who work full-time.” (ANI)

McCrone gets his chance against Broncos

Opportunity has come-a-knocking for Josh McCrone in 2010, with the young Canberra half-back given the chance to face Brisbane in Monday’s NRL clash at Canberra Stadium.

With injury already cutting a swathe through the Raiders squad, coach David Furner has thrown caution to the wind just a game into the season and made some notable changes.

McCrone will get a call-up over regular half-back Marc Herbert, while Furner is also toying with the possibility of introducing raw forward James Stuart into the mix.

The loss of Josh Miller (shoulder) and Danny Galea (thumb) in last week’s opening-round loss to Penrith means Joe Picker has also gone straight into the starting side.

The Raiders are desperate for a win and Furner believes beating the Broncos will require a different approach.

“I’m looking at playing a different style against the Broncos and that change for Josh McCrone suits that,” Furner said.

“Just the style that he can play [compared to] Herbert, it’ll probably give us a little more in attack.

“They’ve both got their attributes to bring to the team, but Joshy’s picked in there to play Broncos.”

Furner would much rather a settled squad each week, but concedes injury has put that hope to bed.

“I try to get as close as I can to the team week in, week out, unfortunately there’s injuries that take that away from you,” he said.

The Raiders are nursing an already-extensive injury list, which has been upped to six following Galea and Miller’s injuries last weekend.

“It’s a little bit unlucky for players, but you can’t help that – it’s a collision sport,” Furner said.

“It does dwindle the squad a little bit, but the guys that have got their opportunities… you see a lot of players take it.”

The Raiders hammered Brisbane 56-0 last time the sides met at Canberra Stadium, but Furner said that meant little this season.

“It’s 2010,” he said, adding Canberra would have to be at their best defensively against Brisbane.

Israel Folau is considered a definite starter for the Broncos despite concerns about a strained AC joint.

Vice-captain Corey Parker is due to fly down to the nation’s capital early on Monday but could still be a late exclusion if his wife goes into labour.

“We are extremely proud,” The Daily Star quoted Fiona Lambert, brand director at George, as saying. (ANI)

Amy Winehouse ‘to record her next album in Caribbean language’

London, July 12 (ANI): Amy Winehouse reportedly wants to record her next album in Kwéyól, the local dialect of St Lucia.

The troubled singer who has applied for citizenship of the Caribbean town might as well be taking intensive lessons to learn the local language.

She is still undecided if major changes need to be done to the lyrics she has already written in English.

“Amy hasn’t decided whether to translate the tracks she’s already written or to write something else that better suits the sound of the language,” the News of the World quoted a source as saying

However, the revelation has left chiefs at ‘Island Records’ fuming.

They expected to release the Grammy winner’s album next year and stage her comeback after a string of controversies related to drug abuse.

A top music insider said: “There’s no way we can release an album with Amy singing in a Caribbean language. We’d be a laughing stock – it would be a commercial flop.” (ANI)

Brothers’ one white-gloved hand tribute to Michael Jackson

London, July 8 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s brothers paid a moving tribute to the late King of Pop by wearing rhinestone-covered white gloves in their one hand.

Jackie, 58, Tito, 55, Jermaine, 54, Randy, 53, and Marlon, 52, were dressed in black suits, gold ties and with red roses as they pushed the late singer’s gold coffin into LA’s packed Staples Center arena for the memorial service.

And all five wore had one white-gloved hand, reports the Sun.

The glove became the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s trademark after he first appeared on TV wearing it in 1983.

It went on to become a symbol known everywhere – of one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever seen.

All five watched from front seats as a galaxy of stars performed in tribute to their brother. (ANI)

Rice to test controversial Jaked speed suit

Brisbane, June 28 (ANI): Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice will test the controversial Jaked speed suit this week in order to switch from the Speedo LZR suit, which she used to claim three gold medals at Beijing Olympics last year.

Rice could be the first member of the Australian team to alter her suit in order to showcase a better performance in next month’s world championships in Rome.

“I’m going to give it a go. I’ll trial it in training and see how it goes, but looking at everyone that has been wearing that suit it has been pretty amazing, hopefully I’m the same in it,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Rice, as saying.

“But there’s also a lot of extra things that come into it. It comes down to personal preference. I’ve heard from a few different people that they don’t like it or it doesn’t fit them as well,” she added.

Rice is unlikely to make a swimsuit deal before the world championships.

However, if the Jaked fall shorts of her requirements, she may resort to the LZR.

“We all thought it would just come down to the Lazer at Rome, so that’s something I’m comfortable with and I don’t need to trial. But in terms of all the other suits, I didn’t want to wear them if they weren’t going to be an option for us in Rome. Now that they have become an option, everyone is in this last-minute panic trying to get their hands on the suits and trial them in training,” Rice said.he 200m and 400m gold medallist specified that testing suits was the last thing the Australian team needed a month before the world championships.

“It’s just a big time-consuming thing. Especially because you really don’t want to miss any training just to trial suits. It’s something that has to be done after sessions. And getting a suit on and off takes almost half an hour. It’s a lot of extra time that you don’t want to waste this late in the preparation,” said Rice. (ANI)

Megan Fox says Robert Pattinson is ‘too pretty’ to date

Washington, May 06 (ANI): Megan Fox has dismissed rumours she once dated Twilight star Robert Pattinson, insisting the young actor is ‘too pretty’ for her.

Rumours that the ‘Transformers’ star was involved with the 22 year old started making rounds after the pair was spotted at a Hollywood hotspot together in March (09).

However, the 22-year-old actress, who recently reconciled with fiance Brian Austin Green, 35, insists that the stories are not true.

“I just randomly asked someone for a light, and it was him. That was the extent of our ‘relationship’. But I’m sure there’s going to be a different guy every week now,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling Elle magazine.

Fox also said that she would never date a teen idol like Pattinson, or Zac Efron – as she prefers older men.

“(Robert) and Zac – they’re just too pretty, with the big hair and the suits. And Rob is, what, 22? Zac is 21? That’s a joke. Boys in their 20s are a waste of time. They have nothing to offer conversationally. They’re immature. I feel like I have a better shot with someone in his 30s,” she said. (ANI)

‘Gay’ Ronaldo turns heads in camp outfit during shopping spree

London, Mar 7 (ANI): Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to turn heads once again on his recent shopping spree.

Ronaldo, 24, who apparently looked gay, wore a tight leather jacket and Army boots with laces undone, a figure-hugging polo neck tucked into skinny jeans, and a diamond-encrusted belt, which had the initials CR initialled on it.

The Manchester United ace, who was carrying a bunch of roses from a fan, spent up to 10,000 pounds on suits and casual wear at upmarket store Flannels in Manchester.

He came out with four bags full of goodies before heading back to his car with a pal.

“Virtually any other man would look utterly ridiculous if they wore what he wears,” the Sun quoted an onlooker as saying.

“But Ronaldo himself somehow seems to pull it off. Whatever he wears, he carries it off in style,” the onlooker added. (ANI)

‘Super-skinny’ Katie Holmes sparks health fears

London, Feb 5 (ANI): Actress Katie Holmes has sparked health concerns because of her super-skinny frame at the premiere of Tom Cruise’s ‘Valkyrie’.

The 30-year-old star wore a senorita-style Christian Lacroix gown at the premiere – although it drew attention to her bony neckline, barely-there cleavage and skinny arms.

“Katie used to have curves in the all the right places but they seem to have disappeared,” The Sun quoted a source as saying.

“She’s been covering up in suits recently so it’s only now we’ve come to realise she has lost a lot of weight,” the source added. (ANI)

Obama’s inaugural parade includes 10,000 performers

Washington – Just as the million-strong crowd dissolved on the National Mall after President Barack Obama’s inaugural oath Tuesday, tens of thousands of others remained along Pennsylvania Avenue in hopes of catching a glimpse of the newly-minted leader in the parade.

Obama and First Lady Michelle, who wore a yellow sheath and matching coat that hung open despite subfreezing weather, boarded the new presidential limousine to lead the parade that carries them over the 2.5-kilometre-distance to their new home at the White House.

One of the first daughters – Malia, 10, or Sasha, 7, it wasn’t clear which one – waved through the dark bullet-proof glass at the cheering, flag-waving 100,000-strong crowd, TV footage showed.

The Obamas were to dismount at the White House to a special parade stand to watch the show go by on the chilly, sunny day.

The parade performers include 10,000 people from music groups, school and university bands, cultural groups and special military units.

A prototype of NASA’s new lunar rover, driven by astronauts in their space suits, was also to roll down Pennsylvania Avenue in the parade.

The Obamas will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, behind the bullet-proof, heated enclosure at the White House to watch the parade.

Later in the evening, the Obamas and Bidens are expected to attend the 10 official balls, which include a special one for the military and another new ball, called the Neighbourhood Ball, for the local region. (dpa)

Inauguration gown buyers flocking to thrift shops to buy recession-proof dresses!

Washington, Jan 9 (ANI): After tucking the highly coveted inaugural ball tickets in their purses, finalising a hot date and a place to stay afterwards, women are now thronging local thrift-shops looking for hand-me-down dresses and accessories to complete their looks for the day.

Thrift-shop merchants are saying that this winter, shopping-savvy and cash-deprived are flocking to discount and consignment stores to get the best buy for dressing up at President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural ceremony.

Goodwill stores “are a great place to find very inexpensive yet beautiful vintage and contemporary high-end fashions for the inaugural festivities,” The Washington Times quoted Brendan Hurley, vice president of marketing for the popular thrift-store chain, as saying in an e-mail.

He said that the Goodwill in Gaithersburg has reported “far more customers looking for formal wear this early in the season than usual.”

Hurley also said that customers were least bothered with wearing other people”s clothes.

This is because “many of the formal gowns that are donated to Goodwill have only been worn once, while some have never been worn at all,” he said.

Em Hall, Goodwill”s fashion blogger has found inaugural gowns from the 1960s designed and donned by Jane Quisenberry Wirtz, who was the wife of Willard Wirtz, 95, secretary of labor under President Kennedy.

And as far as men are concerned, Hall has suggested great deal of selections of tuxedos, suits and shirts.

“The classic black tux is a must-have. Satin lapel, side-seam satin stripe – this is most certainly the time to go all out,’ she said.

Michelle Sterling, founder of the Global Image Group, a style consulting firm said that shopping for inaugural gowns and tuxedos at nontraditional places is a sign of the times.

“With the down economy, many people are cleaning out their closets and selling their old clothes. You never know if you”ll find vintage Chanel, Dior or Gucci in a consignment store,” she said. (ANI)

Botham blames ECB czars for England cricket mess

London, Jan.8 (ANI): Former England cricketer Ian Botham has said that in the last 24 hours, the incidents related to England cricket and its immediate future, are probably the most embarrassing that he has seen, both as a player and as a commentator on the sport.

In an article for the Sunday Mirror, Botham squarely blames the fiasco relating to the Pietersen-Moores disagreement on the “chinless wonders who rule Lord”s from behind a desk”.

Accusing officials of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) of turning English cricket into “a laughing stock”, Botham says: “The events of the last 24 hours have been embarrassing, woeful and shameful.”

“It”s the buffoons in blazers who are now on to their third England captain in five months. Clandestine meetings of men in suits. Smoke and mirrors in a committee room while another England captain is sacrificed on the altar of cloak-and-dagger politics behind the scenes. It”s the faceless clowns who have had to sack an England coach who many people were surprised to see get the job in the first place,” Botham adds.

While he feels sorry for Pietersen, Botham says his decision to quit “reflects dreadfully on the people who do the hiring and firing at Lord”s.”

Pietersen he says did not leak the story about his strained working relationship with coach Peter Moores.

Botham says: “And, I know he did not actually resign until he released his statement shortly before 5.30 p.m. last night – by which time he realised there was no point in carrying on as captain. What was the point of him staying in a job if he was expected to take a bullet for something he didn”t say?

When the England and Wales Cricket Board appointed him as skipper back in August, they knew he wasn”t going to be a yes man, no man, three-bags-full man,” says Botham in his article.

He laments the fact that a skipper with promise has been nipped in the bud, and adds that he too would not have been happy with the squad selected for the forthcoming Caribbean tour. (ANI)

Everest climbers’ record low blood oxygen levels offer hope for critically ill

London, Jan 8 (ANI): British doctors scaling Mount Everest have recorded the lowest levels of blood oxygen in humans, far below those of critically ill patients.

The Caudwell Xtreme Everest team said that the world-first measurements of blood oxygen levels in climbers near the top of Mount Everest could eventually help critical care doctors to re-evaluate treatment strategies in some long-term patients with similarly low levels of blood oxygen.

The study has been published in New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

The team of climbing doctors made the measurements by taking blood from leg arteries close to the summit of Mount Everest at 8,400 metres above sea-level.

Scientists climbed with oxygen tanks, then removed their masks 20 minutes prior to testing to equilibrate their lungs with the low-oxygen atmosphere. The team were unable to make the measurement on the summit of Everest as conditions were too severe, with temperatures at minus 25 degrees centrigrade and winds above 20 knots.

After descending a short distance from the summit, the doctors removed their gloves, unzipped their down suits and drew blood from the femoral artery in the groin.

Blood collected from four team members was then carried back down the mountain to be analysed within two hours at a science laboratory set up at the team”s camp at 6,400 metres on Everest.

The basic aim behind the story was to establish what has long been suspected – that high-altitude climbers have incredibly low levels of oxygen in their blood, which at sea-level would only be seen in patients close to death.

The expedition found the average arterial oxygen level to be 3.28 kilopascals or kPa (with the lowest value being 2.55 kPa); the normal value in humans is 12-14 kPa and patients with a level below 8 kPa are considered critically ill.

Caudwell Xtreme Everest expedition leader Dr Mike Grocott, a UCL Senior Lecturer in Critical Care Medicine, said: “By observing healthy individuals at high altitude where oxygen is scarce, we can learn about physiological changes that can improve critical care at the hospital bedside, because low oxygen levels are an almost universal problem in critical care.

“These extraordinary low levels of oxygen found in high-altitude climbers may cause doctors looking after critically ill patients to revaluate treatment goals in some patients who have been ill for some time and might have adapted to low levels of oxygen in the blood. However, our findings will need further careful evaluation before they can be translated into clinical practice.

“We hope that ongoing research will eventually lead to better treatments for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), cystic fibrosis, emphysema, septic shock, ”blue baby” syndrome and other critical illnesses.” (ANI)

Michelle Obama describes hubby Barack as ”no-frills guy”

London, January 2 (ANI): U.S. President-elect Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, says that he has been a straightforward person throughout his life.

She has revealed that her husband was a “no-frills guy” when she first met him, and that his nature remains the same to date.

“He didn”t care about what other people thought and how he looked, and he was not into fashion but he was very much into issues. He cared more about the work that he was doing in the community than how he looked,” the Telegraph quoted her as telling CNN in an interview.

“He always has and always will be a kind of no-frills guy,” added Michelle, who will become the First Lady on January 20.

She even revealed that her first reaction after learning about her future husband at the time was “what kind of a name is Barack Obama”.

“My assumption was, this guy”s got to be a little weird. Probably a little nerdy. I”d already created an image of this very intellectual image of this nerd,” she said.

However, she got to know Obama better after he was hired at Chicago law firm Sidley Austin, where she worked.

“We clicked right away,” she said.

“He told me more about his background, and he fleshed it out a bit more. I found out that his father was from Kenya, his mother was a white woman from Kansas and that he had spent part of his life in Indonesia.

“He was funny. He was self-deprecating. He didn”t take himself too seriously. He was very down to earth despite having come from this very exotic background compared to mine,” she added.

Michelle said that she was also impressed by Obama’s laid-back style.

“He came out of a community-organizing background, right? So that wasn”t, you know, Wall Street-button-down wearing suits,” she said.

“You were working in communities, and you were, you know, working with single-parent mothers and grandparents raising grandchildren,” she said.

She further said that her husband had not ” changed much over the years,” and would not be too concerned about his appearance.

“Barack still has the same pants and shirts that he had when we got married, which is why I crack up when people say he is one of the best dressed men,” she said.

“I think that maybe that means like he looks good in his clothes because he is tall and thin, but if you look up close, the pants have a hole in the back. And the shoes, I looked at them the other day and I said, you need new shoes,” she added. (ANI)
