Ship used in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ stolen

London, September 14 (ANI): The ship used in the film Pirates of the Caribbean has been stolen.

The vessel was legged from Customhouse Quay in Greenock Renfrewshire.

The raiders also took some cash, an 8x12ft American flag, a survival suit and a life ring.

But the US flag, an immersion suit and a life belt were all later recovered.

The ship, which was built for Marlon Brando’s 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty, has apparently sailed the world as a major tourist attraction.

“It is unbelievable. This ship has sailed all around the world and has never been robbed. But as soon as it gets into Greenock it gets turned over,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The theft took place on Saturday morning, only few hours after arriving to give Scottish fans a rare glimpse on board.

Captain Robin Walbridge – who has skippered it since 1995 – said: “We don’t hold this against the people of Greenock.”

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: “Inquiries are on-going.”

The replica vessel had featured in Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead Man’s Chest. (ANI)

UNICEF celebrates 200 episodes of Kyunki… Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai.

New Delhi, Aug.28 (ANI): UNICEF recently celebrated the telecast of the 200th episode of its entertainment education serial Kyunki… Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai on Doordarshan National.

A serial with all the emotional and dramatic twists and turns that make soaps so popular, Kyunki… has emerged as an innovative and effective agent for behavior change communication amongst Indian television viewers.

Watched by over 125 million viewers across India, the gripping social drama promotes life-enhancing, life-saving messages, critical to the welfare and survival of children and mothers everywhere.

From safe motherhood to HIV prevention, infant feeding to girls’ education, Kyunki promotes prosocial attitudes, behaviours, and practices that contribute directly to the reduction of infant and maternal mortality rates

Naysan Sahba, Programme Communication Specialist at UNICEF India Country Office, who conceptualized the serial says “When we began to work on the show’s concept about four years ago, at the height of the popularity of the saas-bahu sagas, everybody said impossible, there’s no audience for this. Well, we went ahead, carefully if courageously, and you can imagine our delight in that not only is our show doing well but a new wave of socially conscious TV serials, serials tackling hard-hitting issues effecting women and children, have followed suit and are taking the country by storm” .

Kyunki… has a rather unique viewership including unexpected regulars in the form of youngsters and men. A favorite of many across India, the serial is one of the top rankers in its primetime spot of 8:30 PM to 9 PM and is the leading daily soap on DD National.

Not shying away from taking up socially sensitive issues such as the ill effects of child marriage and early pregnancy, gender equality, proper use of contraceptives and prevention of HIV/AIDS, Kyunki… has been a catalyst in encouraging dialogues amongst young girls and families in rural India about things that they earlier had next to no say about.

Concurrent audience research shows that there has been a consistent increase in the number of viewers who say they intend to take action as a direct result of watching Kyunki…, including informing others about the importance of education, motivating children to join school, immunizing one’s own children and regularly washing hands with soap .

The serial has also become a helpful tool and an excellent reference point for frontline workers who promote positive changes in social and health behaviors through interpersonal communication. In depth interviews with health workers, teachers and other influencers has shown that Kyunki… in fact reinforces many of the same ideas they work with and introduces contemporary issues in an interesting, entertaining and practical manner. HINDRAF leader ‘used millions for personal use’

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.21 (ANI): HINDRAF activist V. Ganabatirau has accused the outlawed movement’s leader P. Waythamoorthy of using millions of ringgit (Malaysian currency) collected from the people for personal use while in self-imposed exile in London.

According to a Tamil Nesan report, Ganabatirau claimed the funds collected by the movement for the five HINDRAF leaders who were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) from December 2007 never reached them or their families.

He said that initially, the funds were collected by highlighting the sufferings of the detained leaders and later by focusing on the sufferings of the family members detained.

He said the funds were meant for a civil suit that was to be filed against the British government within three months.

He said he met HINDRAF lawyer P. Uthayakumar in December 2006 and had actively organised forums and demonstrations together with another HINDRAF detainee K. Vasanthakumar on temple demolitions from January to April 2007.

He said the application for permission to hold the Nov 25, 2007, rally to hand over the memorandum to the British government was organised by him and

Vasanthakumar, adding that Waythamoorthy contributed nothing to the movement, except being named plaintiff in the suit. (ANI)

Congress spokesman Manish Tiwari has described the incident as regrettable and unfortunate, and added that in-house mechanisms will be used to deal with the incident after a report is submitted. (ANI)

Tyra Banks’ stalker sentenced to 1yr probation

New York, Jun 19 (ANI): A Georgia man, who had been stalking and harassing talk show host Tyra Banks, was on June 18 sentenced to one year of probation.

The stalker, Brady Green, 39, has also been barred from contacting the former supermodel for two years, and was also ordered to complete an anti-stalking course.

Green, who wore a shiny brown suit, declined to comment after the sentencing in Manhattan Criminal Court, and so did his lawyer.

Banks was not present during the hearing, and prosecutors described Green as having developed an “unhealthy obsession” while watching the actress’ show in his hometown of Dublin, Ga.

Banks had testified against him in April, saying that she was “terrified”, after she and her staffers had to barricade themselves in her dressing room when Green tried to slip past security on ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ in March 2008.

“I fear the safety of my staffers. I fear the safety of my family,” the New York Daily News quoted her as testifying.

Green had said during the trial that he only wanted to score tickets for the show. (ANI)

Russian aristocrat’s heir reclaims Van Gogh painting ‘looted’ by Lenin

Paris, May 29 (ANI): The heir of a Tsarist-era aristocrat has launched a legal fight to reclaim a Van Gogh masterpiece that was taken away from the family by Communnist era leader Vladimir Lenin and his Bolsheviks after the 1917 revolution.

Pierre Konowaloff, a naturalised Frenchman, claims that Van Gogh’s Night Cafe, which has hung on the walls of Yale University for nearly 50 years, was confiscated from his great-grandfather Ivan Morozov on the orders of Lenin.

According to The Telegraph, a court ruling in his favour would trigger a flood of similar claims from Russian imigris whose family art collections were plundered by the Bolshevik government.

It could also force western countries to widen the Washington Declaration of 1988, which required its 44 signatories to search for art plundered by the Nazis, and return it to the heirs of the original owners.

Konowaloff’s lawyers have written to Yale demanding the painting’s surrender. The university was forced to file a suit in a U.S. court to resolve the issue of ownership.

Regarded as one of the artist’s most profound interpretations of the human condition, Night Cafe was bequeathed to Yale in 1960 by Stephen Clark, a collector and benefactor who attended the university.

It was originally sold to a Berlin art gallery as one of dozens of masterpieces offloaded by Stalin in the early 1930s to finance a five-year plan meant to modernise Soviet industry and agriculture.

Yale maintains that the sale was legal and cannot therefore be challenged.

Konowaloff says he intends to give the painting to the Russian state in exchange for unspecified financial compensation. (ANI)

Now, a ‘Mongoose’ bat that could revolutionise the way cricket is played

London, May 29 (ANI): Former Australian batsman Stuart Law has become the first player to use the new Mongoose blade in a cricket competition.

This latest evolution in cricket bat design has sparked fears that younger players will be turned off bowling.

The Mongoose bat, with a handle as long as the blade, is not even the craziest design the Marylebone Cricket Club – the game’s lawmakers – have been presented this past year as Twenty20 spawns a new wave of invention, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

The MCC has already rejected dozens of submissions, including one bat with holes drilled into the blade for aerodynamic purposes, described by observers as a “Swiss cheese bat”. But they passed this one, used for the first time by former Australian batsman Stuart Law during a county Twenty20 match on Tuesday night.

The MCC found that it met all requirements under law six of regulations regarding the make-up of a bat, and they are not concerned about the possible ramifications for bowlers.

The Mongoose is tailor-made for the short format. Subtlety is not its strong suit. With a five-centimeter thick base that boasts a sweet spot twice the size of that on a traditional bat, even the pace bowler’s saving grace – a yorker – can be dispatched to the ropes.

“The Mongoose has the potential to revolutionise cricket,” said Law, who is contracted by the bat’s manufacturers to spruik its powers.

“Without changing your technique, the bat allows you to hit the ball harder and further. Its power is phenomenal. It’s a weapon of mass destruction,” Law added.

A company spokesman said there was “every chance” the bat, with a starting price of 159 pounds, could make an appearance at the Twenty20 World Cup as negotiations were under way with other international players.

The ICC has no problems with that prospect because it complies with MCC law, although, looking at its design, some wonder how that could be.

“When Twenty20 came in, people said it would be the death of the spin bowler, and, over time, it has proved that spin bowlers are the most successful. I don’t think we need to be worried about fast-tracking laws to help bowlers. We’ll see how it [influences games] and then obviously consider if laws need to be tailored,” MCC spokesman Neil Priscott said. (ANI)

Serverside Group granted second patent on core card customization architecture

London, May 21 (ANI/Business Wire India): Global technology provider, Serverside Group, announced that the Indian Patent Office has granted a patent directed to its core card customization architecture, thus establishing an international trend.

Since the Indian filing was part of an international strategy, the grant of the Indian patent, which follows the grant of a European Patent, not only enhances Serverside’s competitive position in India but indicates the likely outcome in other territories yet to come to grant.

As a result, Serverside is continuing to pursue its growing portfolio of international patent rights, with other major global territories soon expected to grant in its favor.

The patent grant was officially published on 26 February 2009 under Indian Patent No. 230390. The application leading to this patent defined the first of three inventions derived from the original world-wide patent family, which itself is one of a number of world-wide patent families applied for in recent years to cover the design, marketing and production of customized financial transaction cards.

Adam Elgar, President, Serverside Group, said: “Being granted the Indian patent is great news for Serverside. Clearly, we’re thrilled to be able to protect our position in India, but more broadly we’re also very encouraged because this gives an indication of the likely decision in other jurisdictions. Due to our level of innovation, we always felt it essential to invest in our IP and the decision of the Indian Patent Office to grant in our favour clearly justifies our strategy. We are now focusing our attention on the remainder of our patent applications and expect other territories to follow suit.” (ANI)
