PM refuses to front insulation inquiry

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says he will not appear before a Senate inquiry into the scrapped home insulation program.

A Senate committee is trying to establish what went wrong with the $2.45 billion scheme which was axed after it was linked to the deaths of installers, house fires and allegations of rorting.

The committee has asked Mr Rudd, the minister formerly responsible for the scheme Peter Garrett, the new minister responsible Greg Combet, and Employment Participation Minister Mark Arbib to appear. They have all refused.

Mr Rudd’s office says Question Time is the appropriate place for ministers to answer questions on the issue.

“That is the place to question ministers, not stunts like the Opposition’s party-political inquiry,” a spokesman for Mr Rudd said.

Liberal Senator Mary Jo Fisher, who chairs the environment references committee, says the response “gets a laugh out loud from the committee chairwoman”.

“The Australian people would find that response … offensive,” Senator Fisher said.

“It is dismissive of the fraud, the fires, the accidents, the fatalities that have happened.”

Senator Fisher says the Coalition-dominated committee has not been able to get satisfactory answers from bureaucrats so they wanted to go straight to the top.

The committee would consider its options after Mr Rudd and the ministers refused to appear, she said.

Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt says the Prime Minister should appear before the Senate inquiry.

“This is not like any other government failure of the last 30 years, there has been a huge human impact,” Mr Hunt said.

“The Prime Minister should appear to explain what the Government knew and why they made the decisions and why they ignored the warnings.”

Gemma Arterton suffers injuries while doing stunts for new film

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Gemma Arterton was left with multiple injuries on the set of upcoming movie ‘Clash Of The Titans’, because she insisted on performing her own stunts.

The former Bond girl plays character Io opposite Sam Worthington and Ralph Fiennes in the big screen remake.

The actress spent a lot of time shooting scenes on top of a mountain in Tenerife, Spain and enjoyed the challenge of working in such difficult conditions.

“We were inside a crater in the volcano so the terrain was gravel and every time I fell over I was covered in wounds. But I loved doing my own stunts… I remember one day when Sam and I could only do an uphill spring four times because we were so breathless,” the Daily Star quoted Arterton as telling Scotland”s Sunday Mail.

“I spent 10 days fighting giant scorpions and I loved that because they were about the size of a house. We used animatronic scorpions, rather than computer-created things on green screen, so you had a real idea of a humongous claw – the size of a table – reaching out at you… It was crazy being dressed in these skimpy outfits because in the mornings it was minus 2C. Then, as the day went on, it would get up to 27C. So it started off freezing cold and then it got scorching. But I could handle it,” she added. (ANI)

“I could no longer use my arm, but now I can hold a fork and drive so we’re working our way up. It’ll probably be another six months of rehab, but It’s the price you pay for being really limber and being able to do back flips!” she added.

However, despite her Hollywood success, the 35-year-old actress had initially thought being an actress was a pretty pathetic profession.

“I wasn’t trying to be an actor, I was standing outside of a gym waiting for my friend to come out and this woman he knew kept saying, ‘She should be in this movie blah blah blah’ and I was like, ‘Gross, I don’t want to be an actor! Ew!’ and then I found out they would pay me enough money for a down payment on an apartment,” said McGowan.

“Otherwise I would have had to go back and live with dad in Seattle. The film, ‘The Doomed Generation,’ became this huge cult movie and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and I’ve been following the Yellow Brick Road ever since…” she added. (ANI)

‘Cirque De Soleil’ creator called cheater in new book

New York, May 29 (ANI): The man, who created the beloved Cirque du Soleil, is now being called a cheater by his ex-girlfriend in a new book.

In ‘Guy Laliberte: The Fabulous Story of the Creator of the Cirque du Soleil’, author Ian Halperin has revealed that Rizia Moreira, who gave birth to three of Laliberte’s five children, thinks he is a scoundrel.

“Guy thinks he is larger than life. He would be out all night partying with young girls while I stayed at home watching the kids. He had so many women behind my back,” the New York Post quoted Moreira as saying in the book.

She added: “He tried to hide it, but I caught him each time . . . I confronted him, and he didn’t know what to say. He made my life miserable.”

Moreira told Halperin: “He’d come home after sleeping with other women and have sex with me . . . If he had told me, I never would have had sex with him. Not only was he being unfaithful, he was putting my health at risk . . . He was a master of deception and tricks and stunts.”

However, Renee-Claude Menard, a representative for Laliberte and Cirque, called the book “unauthorized” and said that they have no connection with the contents of the tome.

Menard said: “(It) is purely based on the author’s research. We, both Cirque du Soleil and Guy Laliberti, will not comment on contents that have been gathered through ‘hearsay.’ We do not recognize this book as relevant nor factual.”

The book from Transit Publishing will be out in June. (ANI)

Patrick Swayze battled cancer like a ‘beast’, says book

New York, May 8 (ANI): A new biography of Patrick Swayze has revealed how the actor bravely battled his cancer like a ‘beast’, after he was diagnosed with the illness.

In the book, titled ‘Patrick Swayze: One Last Dance’, the ‘Ghost’ star has confessed that It was on New Year’s Eve 2007 that he realised how his health was deteriorating.

And then, his wife Lisa, was informed that Swayze had pancreatic cancer and was given just a 5 percent chance to live.

However, Swayze didn’t give up on his career because of his poor health, but he was even more determined to work.

After receiving the news of his illness, Swayze called Sony executive Jamie Erlicht, whose company was co-producing his A and E show, ‘The Beast’.

“He told us, ‘Guys, I have some horrible news. But if you can be patient and stand by me, I’m going to come back and do the show. I’m in great condition. I’m a cowboy. I’m a dancer. I’ll beat this,’” the New York Daily News quoted Erlicht as saying.

And, while filming the TV series in Chicago, Swayze stayed focused on his work despite his sickness.

In fact, crewmembers have cited that he worked as long as 12 hours at a time, all while refusing painkillers.

And finally, the star completed every one of his 12 episodes, and when the show wrapped on Nov. 21 last year, Swayze was hopeful for the future and his survival.

He said: “My big regret is the physical damage I’ve done to my body. I can do almost anything physically and I used to believe I was invincible, breaking bones over and over, playing football, doing gymnastics, diving, ballet, doing my own stunts, kick boxing, staging fights … it all seems a little stupid to me now.” (ANI)

On-screen stunts ‘encourage speeding’

London, May 1 (ANI): Watching thrilling stunts in computer games, TV shows and Hollywood films encourage drivers towards a dangerous culture of speeding, according to a new report.

A Co-operative Insurance survey found that high-speed movie chases and programmes such as Top Gear have built up a “cachet of excitement and glamour around speeding.”

In the survey, over one third of drivers aged 17-18 and one fourth of those in the age group of 19-21, said that they break the speed limit at least once in a single day.

“Many of the most serious collisions are caused, or their consequences exacerbated, because of someone driving well in excess of the speed limit,” The Daily Express quoted road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick as saying at the launch.

He added: “Research shows that one in seven people is an extreme speeder. These people are playing Russian roulette with their lives and those of others.”

The report demonstrated that a majority of people think that driving only becomes irresponsible when they break the speed limit by 10mph or even 20mph.

Co-operative Insurance executive David Neave said: “We need to create the same stigma for speeding that exists now against drink-driving.” (ANI)
