‘Balakrishnan tarnished image of judiciary’

New Delhi, June 5 — The stubbornness with which Justice K.G Balakrishnan, who retired as Chief Justice of India last month, opposed the implementation of the Right to Information in the judiciary has damaged the image of the institution, according to rebellious judge D.V. Shylendra Kumar. In one of the strongest attacks by any judge across the country on Justice Balakrishnan, who is set to take over as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chief on Monday, Justice Kumar held him responsible for further eroding the faith of the people in the judiciary. “Justice Balakrishnan, in an adamant manner, not only refused to divulge information on the functioning of the Supreme Court on the administrative side, but also tried to stonewall the judicial opinion expressed by the Delhi High Court in holding it (SC) amenable to part with information under RTI,” he wrote on his blog. “This stubborn attitude greatly damaged the image of judiciary in the country, and the already eroding faith and confidence of the people in the judicial system only got further reduced in the wake of such an attitude on the part of the former CJI,” Justice Kumar wrote. The only active blogger judge in the country’s higher judiciary, Kumar, in an open letter to the country’s citizens, has also taken a dig at Supreme Court judges, saying the top court of India is one of the most powerful in the world but not necessarily correct.

The judge wanted to know if Justice Balakrishnan had the details of judges’ assets since 1997, when the judges of the top court passed a resolution to do so, and what prevented him from making these public the day after the announcement.

Pak minister warns to expose all anti Pakistan forces

Lahore, July 14 (ANI): Pakistan’s State Minister for Interior Tasnim Ahmed Qureshi has said that the government would expose all local and foreign forces attempting to weaken Pakistan’s integrity, solidarity and security at the right time.

Talking to media after being briefed by FIA Director (Immigration) Azam Joyia here on Tuesday, he said the entire security apparatus of the country has been improved to eliminate terrorism effectively.

“We have cleansed the Swat Valley of extremists and terrorists and will wipe them out completely with the active support of the nation,” Qureshi observed.

He said the IDPs are going back to their hometowns, which are now secured to live in, The News reported.

Replying to a question on Ajmal Qasab, he said India has now come to realise Pakistan’s viewpoint that stubbornness is no solution to the matter, adding that both governments are progressing on the case on the basis of documentary proof and evidences with mutual understanding.

To another query, Qureshi said that he had issued only 8,000 arms licences purely on merit basis, as the Prime Minister had delegated his powers in this regard to him, following his (PM) busy schedules.

Qureshi urged the masses to play their effective role in improving the country’s economy by doing foreign transactions through banks.

He also appealed to the people not to use illegal means for going abroad and must verify whether the respective travel agent is registered with the concerned government department. (ANI)

UPA govt. failed to improve security: Arun Jaitley

Rajkot (Gujarat), Apr 26 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government has failed to improve the national security even after the Mumbai terror attacks last year.

“The negligence of national security by the UPA Government will have huge consequences. The Australian tennis team has refused to play the Davis Cup tie in Chennai. The Indian Premier League has also shifted this year’s edition to South Africa,” Jaitley said at a press conference here.

He further said Congress’ stubbornness would bracket the security of India with Pakistan.

“After Australian team’s refusal to play in India, foreign teams will continuously refuse to play here. The 2010 Commonwealth Games are going to be held here next year. What picture of India would it represent with it? Tourists and investors would be reluctant to visit our country. With their stubbornness they are bracketing the security of India with Pakistan,” Jaitley added.

The BJP leader also criticized Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for failing to provide a Finance Minister.

“There is no credibility in his (Manmohan Singh) existence. From the last 150 days, Manmohan Singh has failed to provide a Finance Minister to this country. There is no Finance Minister in this country since December 1,” Jaitley added. (ANI)
