170 motormen detained under ESMA

Mumbai, May 4 (ANI): At least 170 motormen have been detained till now under the Essential Services Maintenance ACT (ESMA) after it was imposed by the Maharashtra Government on Tuesday to force them resume their work with immediate effect.

State Chief Minister Ashok Chavan took the decision after an emergency meeting with senior railway police and state administration officials.

Earlier, the Central Government had given a green signal to the State Government to impose ESMA on the striking motormen.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left parties are, however, criticising the government for imposing ESMA.

Earlier this morning, the Central Railway suspended 20 motormen under the Railways Act for their refusal to end their strike, terming it as illegal.

Train services on Central and Western lines in Mumbai continue to remain badly affected, as the motormen have refused to end their indefinite hunger strike.

Central Railway authorities said they would run only 30 per cent of their services today.

The motormen”s strike threw life out of gear for the city”s 70 lakh train commuters.

Around 1,000 motormen of both Central and Western Railways went on a hunger strike to press for higher pay scales and allowances from Monday morning, causing immense inconvenience to daily commuters.

The Railway Ministry contends that the motormen are demanding higher pay than what has been recommended by the Sixth Central Pay Commission and additional allowances, which are not included in the Pay Commission”s recommendations.

The ministry further said that some of their demands regarding national holidays and night duty allowances have already been met.

It has asked the general managers of Central and Western Railways to take all necessary steps in coordination with the Maharashtra Government to ensure minimum inconvenience to daily commuters.

“Railway will not hesitate in taking the stringent action against those who are not heeding to our request,” said Anil Saxena, spokesperson of Indian Railways.

The striking motormen have said their protest would continue for the next few days if their demands are not met.

“Our demands are genuine, we are not asking for anything more. We are demanding only for what we should get as per the formula,” said Suresh Pardesi. (ANI)

Residents anguish over bomb blast incidents in Assam

Guwahati, April 13 (ANI): Residents across Assam have expressed deep resentment about the mayhem caused by militants in the recent past.

The recent serials blasts in Assam have once again strengthened the people’s belief that militants are only concerned about materialistic goals, and not the society’s welfare.

The four bomb explosions claimed the lives of eight people and injured 62 others.

A bomb went off at a busy place at Maligaon Chariali in Guwahati in front of a restaurant near the North East Frontier Railway headquarters. The explosion triggered a major fire in the parking lot, gutting several vehicles.

Apart from that there were three more blasts across Assam in Dhekaijuli, Mankachar and Udalgiri, which killed one and injured several others.

“We were stuck inside, I cannot speak. We were suffocated and still facing problems in breathing. There was lot of smoke filled inside,” said Iman, an eyewitness of the blast in Guwahati

Police suspect ULFA’s involvement in blasts, as the outfit has carried out such attacks in the past before its ‘Raising Day’.

The blasts also took place ahead of the Prime minister Manmohan Singh’s scheduled visit to the state.

Meanwhile, the intelligence inputs indicated that the outfit was planning to carry out some big attacks.

The government warned taken stringent action against the perpetrators to safeguard innocent people from getting killed.

“No quarter will be given and no quarter will be asked of ULFA. ULFA is a banned organisation where at least two battalion of ULFA are engaged in a virtual war everyday. ULFA will be fought by security forces. There will be setbacks from time to time but we will overcome ULFA,” said P. Chidambaram, the Union Home Minister.

There is a growing belief here that with the Lok Sabha Elections just round the corner, militant groups are trying to create a fear psychosis among the people.

Experts feel that militants are trying to hamper the democratic process by carrying out such violent activities.

“Fear psychosis that is gripping the mind of the people is very serious this time. Because there is so many bomb blast in recent times. Last week, two bomb blasts killed about ten people. Now therefore, the political violence is growing in Assam is very serious. We have seen in the past times also that ULFA and other insurgent group utilize election as a means to ventilate their grievances but this is a very nefarious way of expressing their grievances,” said Dr. Noni Mahanta, one political analyst.

Nine bomb blast which have occurred in the last six months in Guwahati, have left 75 people killed and over 300 injured. (ANI)

Imprisonment of Varun Gandhi, an attempt to gather Muslim votes: Thackeray

Mumbai, Apr 1 (ANI): Continuing to criticise the authorities for taking stringent action against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi, who has been accused of making communal remarks, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Wednesday said that that the imprisonment of Gandhi was a warning to Hindus and an attempt to gather Muslim vote bank.

“The way the Mayawati government slapped NSA and jailed Varun is a bid to appease Muslim vote bank. It is a warning to Hindus,” Thackeray was quoted by party mouthpiece Saamna.

“We can understand that action was taken for his alleged remarks but what is the justification for invoking National Security Act (NSA) and putting him behind bars for a year,” he added.

Supporting Varun Gandhi for his speech in Pillibhit on March 6, Thakeray asked, “How could Indira Gandhi’s grandson pose a danger to the country?”

He further accused the Congress for ignoring the rapidly multiplying population of Muslims in India, who hate the concept of family planning.

Thackeray, on March 27 had expressed his contempt against the Congress in an editorial in “Saamna” saying, “If Varun Gandhi merely uttered something in an aggressive manner in interests of Hindus, the so-called secular elements demanded his banishment from poll arena.”

“When Muslims, Christians and other religions look after their interests in the elections, why shouldn’t the Hindus do so,” he said.

He also sympathised with Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur saying that she was being served “insects” in her meals.

“Does Congress want to bring an Islamic rule in the country by pushing Hindus to the background?” he asked.

BJP ally in the coming elections, Thackeray-led Shiv Sena holds a stronghold in Maharashtra, where it will be contesting 22 of the 48 seats. (ANI)

Omar Abdullah asks Pakistan to take a strict action against terror outfits

Srinagar, Mar 4 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Wednesday said Pakistan needs to take a stringent action against perpetrators of the recent attack on touring Sri Lankan team, which visited that nation after Indian team opted not to visit Pakistan following Mumbai terror attacks.

Abdullah said that that had it been the Indian cricket team instead of Sri Lankan team, India and Pakistan could have felt drawn to a war-like situation.

“It was the Sri Lankan team. We were to play these matches. Had our team been there and had our team been targeted, God forbid any such situation, but in such a scenario, we would have been in a war like situation today,” said Abdullah visiting to the famous tulip gardens of Srinagar.

Omar also said that it was high time Pakistan took stock of the situation, and make a sincere effort to root out the problem.

“I have not seen anyone blaming India directly for the attacks. They are saying that there is a foreign hand involved. No one has said that India is involved. The fact is that Pakistan itself is a victim of the forces that are operating there. Now, the time has come that Pakistan understand the issue that has become a problem for everybody. It should understand the problem is grave enough for itself also and it should make a sincere effort to root out these forces,” said Abdullah.

The subcontinent should try to fight the menace of terrorism so that it sheds the image of instability that it has earned, Omar added.

“We want to fight these forces along with Pakistan so that Pakistan emerges as a stable, secure and safe country and that the bad effect that these attacks have had on the subcontinent are reduced,” he said.

On March 3, a dozen gunmen in Pakistan’s Lahore, attacked Sri Lanka’s cricket team using AK-47′s, rifles, grenades and rockets, wounding six players, a British coach and killing at least eight Pakistani security personnel in Lahore.
