The charges related to downloading copies of the Anarchist”s Cookbook and The Poor Man”s James Bond on two computers. (ANI)

World Cup Group A news – France/S Africa/Mexico/Uruguay

Latest Group A team news ahead of the World Cup in South Africa which starts on June 11:

SOUTH AFRICA

A local coach will be appointed to succeed the Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira after the World Cup, the South African Football Association’s top official said at the weekend.

It is expected either Parreira’s assistant Pitso Mosimane or Gavin Hunt, who has won three successive South African league titles with SuperSport United, will be offered the job by the South African Football Association.

SAFA chief executive officer Leslie Sidibe said the association believed it was time a local coach was at the helm of the national team, Bafana Bafana.

FRANCE

Thierry Henry made the most of a rare Barcelona appearance when he scored the Blaugranas’s second goal in a 3-1 win against Xerez on Saturday, his first in two months.

Playmaker Yoann Gourcuff picked up a thigh injury in Girondins Bordeaux’s 1-0 defeat at Lorient on Saturday.

He was only replaced at halftime although Bordeaux said on their website (www.girondins.com) Gourcuff felt pain following an attempt on goal early in the game. The club did not elaborate on the length of Gourcuff’s absence.

MEXICO

A squad of 17 assembled by coach Javier Aguirre entered a training camp near Avandaro this week with one eye on their May friendlies in the United States against Ecuador (May 7), Senegal (10) and Angola (13).

Goalkeeper Oscar Perez cannot wait for players still with their clubs in Europe to link up with the squad.

“When they are with us things are going to go really well. We used to work with the entire squad but there shouldn’t be any hitches,” the 37-year-old said.

URUGUAY

The much-travelled Sebastian Abreu, now with Brazil’s Botafogo, is hoping he is playing his way into coach Oscar Tabarez’s plans for Uruguay’s strike force. Abreu has hit 13 goals in 18 games for the Rio de Janeiro outfit.

“A national coach can’t afford to ignore an experienced player who’s in great form, is winning titles and scoring goals in a league as strong as Brazil’s, is playing for a big club like Botafogo, and who knows his way round the national set-up. Only the best players get chosen for the national squad,” the man known as El Loco said.

Tabarez is likely to count on Diego Forlan of Atletico Madrid and Luis Suarez of Ajax as his first choice for an attacking partnership, and Forlan was on target this week.

He scored the Atletico goal that sunk Liverpool in the first leg of the Europa Cup semi-final on Thursday.

Abuse claims: Catholic priest arrested again

A Catholic priest already facing 20 charges of child sex abuse has today been charged over another alleged offence at a convent in the New South Wales Hunter Valley.

The 48-year-old has been charged by Strike Force Georgiana, which is investigating allegations members of the clergy abused scores of children in the region.

The man went to Raymond Terrace Police Station this morning and was charged with committing an act of indecency to a child under 16.

Police say the charges relate to the alleged assault of a child at a former Maitland convent in the 1980s.

The man was granted conditional bail to face Newcastle Local Court on May 5.

The strike force has charged six people with a total of more than 200 offences.

It is urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of child sexual abuse or who could assist the investigation to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police set up Hey Dad! strike force

Police have set up a strike force team to investigate allegations of indecent assault made against Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes.

Sarah Monahan, who played Hughes’s on-screen daughter on the Channel Seven show from 1987 to 1994, has told media outlets that he touched her inappropriately.

Hughes, who now lives in Singapore, has strenuously denied the allegations.

Today it was announced that detectives have formed Strike Force Ruskin to examine the claims.

They say they will interview alleged victims and witnesses but warn that it will be a protracted investigation.

Earlier, police said they were likely to take a statement on the allegations later today.

A police spokesman said a statement was most likely to be taken from Monahan at an undisclosed location.

Last week, police said they had begun to collate material relating to the matter but an official complaint had yet to be made.

Moss Vale murder accused to face trial

A man accused of murdering a woman in the New South Wales Southern Highlands will stand trial.

Michael Goodridge, 52, was charged with murder after a 39-year-old woman’s body was found in an old railway workers hut in Argyle Street at Moss Vale, near the train station last May.

At the time, a strike force comprised of detectives from the Goulburn local area command, assisted by the State Crime Command’s homicide squad, was set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

Detectives say Goodridge and the murdered woman had been squatting together in the building.

Details of how the woman died have never been released.

In the Goulburn Local Court yesterday, Goodridge was committed to stand trial in the New South Wales Supreme Court on a date yet to be fixed.

Ponting overplayed his mild cards in Cardiff: Roebuck

Sydney, July 14 (ANI): Noted cricket columnist Peter Roebuck feels that Australia played exceptionally well in Cardiff and were denied victory only by “a soporific surface and resistance from sturdy opponents with a short backlift and a stubborn streak.”

“Australia played impressively and go to Lord’s with high hopes.

Brett Lee is recovering, and the ball was reverse swinging. Besides, England have far more to worry about,” he adds in article for the Sydney Morning Herald.

He said that Australia would look back on the match with a mixture of satisfaction and regret.

“Overall, it was a resounding performance, notable for superb batsmanship and persistent bowling. Brad Haddin did well behind the sticks, too, and no catches were dropped. Ricky Ponting’s team looked united and solid, and the captain himself had a splendid match, both with the bat and as the side’s driving force,” Roebuck says.

He also praised Tasmanian for choosing Ben Hilfenhaus and Nathan Hauritz, the two best bowlers in the match.

Nor did his team lose intensity on a supine pitch. That is not to say he is a master tactician.

Among the bowlers, only Mitchell Johnson disappointed, but his loss of form was a severe handicap to a limited strike force. Inescapably, he is the key man in the modern Australian attack.

“Too much faith was shown in Johnson. It seemed odd, too, that Marcus North was used in the last minutes. Presumably, it was an attempt to send down as many overs as possible but, as a rule, quality is more important than quantity,” Roebuck concludes. (ANI)

Murder charges on accused for acid attack on Lankan students in Oz

Melbourne, July 1 (ANI): Attempted murder charges have been laid against a man accused of an acid attack on two Sri Lankan students during a home invasion in Western Sydney.

Detectives arrested Amalathepan Srikantharajah, 25, of Girraween, about 10am (AEST) on Wednesday and charged him with attempted murder over the May 17 attack in western Sydney’s Westmead.

The attack followed a series of racially motivated incidents between Tamil and Sinhalese Sri Lankans following the violent end to that nations 37-year civil war.

The two victims Chathurika Weerasinghe, 27, and housemate Jayasri Watawala, 22, were attacked in their home by a group of men with one also suffering a stab wound to the stomach and a broken ankle.

Strike Force Doorwood Commander Albert Joseph, who is coordinating the investigation, said police were still looking for other offenders.

“Extensive investigations have been conducted by the Strike Force Doorwood investigation team and as a result a male person has been charged with attempted murder, break and enter with intent to commit murder, and use a corrosive substance to maim another person,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

The man arrested today already faces a charge of failing to disclose the identification of a passenger in his vehicle following the incident and two other men have previously been charged with concealing a serious offence.

Detective Inspector Joseph said the two victims had been informed of the latest arrest. He said both men were continuing to recover well from their horrific injuries. (ANI)

High drama as two Hindraf men are released

Kuala Lumpur, April 5 (IANS) Two leaders of the banned Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) were released from jail Sunday afternoon to reunite with their families and supporters, following an amnesty by new Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

Also released was an Indian national, Sundaraj Vijay, who, besides two Myanmarese, had been caught with forged travel papers and had been in jail for two years under the stringent Internal Security Act (ISA).

The 13 ISA detainees were escorted out of the Kamunting detention centre in Perak state.

V. Ganabatirau and R. Kengadharan of the Hindraf were released along with eight Islamist extremists – seven from Darul Islam Sabah and one from terror network Jemaah Islamiah.

Ganabatirau and Kengadharan left the camp in police escort vehicles and were driven straight to their homes in Shah Alam and Kelana Jaya respectively, Star Online said.

The others were allowed to walk out of the centre gates but were immediately led into an awaiting van which took them to their homes.

Supporters and family members of the Hindraf duo had begun arriving in droves to the camp outside the Kamunting centre since morning in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the two as they left.

Despite the sweltering morning heat, which only worsened as afternoon approached, the crowd swelled to more than 100 people, forcing the police light strike force to be deployed at about 11 a.m. to keep the situation under control.

Some began chanting in Tamil, their support for Prime Minister Razak.

Contractor C. Kanasa plonked himself down on a stool outside the jail gates and got his nephew N. Gobinaath, 15, to shave his beard off.

‘I’ve been keeping this beard since the ‘Hindraf Five’ were detained on Dec 13, 2007. Now, since two are being released, I am shaving it off.

‘If Najib releases the other three, I will shave my entire head,’ he said.

The wives of Ganabatirau and Kengadharan, along with relatives and friends, were also amongst the large entourage outside the centre.

Both women were seen huddling under a shared umbrella and chatting with one another as they awaited the release of their husbands.

When interviewed, they said their husbands were looking forward to only one thing after their release – reuniting with their families.

Kengadharan’s wife M. Kalaivani said her husband’s priorities were his family and his career.

‘Whether he decides to resume his social activities remains to be seen. At this point he just misses his family and wants to resume his practice,’ she said.

The 41-year-old medical officer added that like Ganabatirau, her husband was very upset that the other three Hindraf detainees had yet to be released.

Ganabatirau and Kengadharan were detained together with fellow lawyers P. Uthayakumar and M. Manoharan, as well as Hindraf coordinator K. Vasantha Kumar, for organising a mammoth gathering on Nov 25, 2007.

Ganabatirau’s wife, B. Buwaneswary, 33, said since her husband was detained in 2007, he had not once indicated that he had abandoned his beliefs or his convictions.

‘My husband is a steadfast man. He has not weakened in his beliefs and he is honest about it,’ she said, adding that she would encourage her husband in anything he wanted to do.

Man U players create their own lookalike line-up

London, Mar.29 (ANI): Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has revealed that to cheer themselves up after recent defeats, the players have made their own lookalike hall of fame in the dressing room of the Carrington training ground.

Standing tall in goal for the Reds is Rodney Trotter (Van der Sar) from Only Fools And Horses. In front of him, Star Wars freak Jar Jar Binx (Ferdinand), Rocky IV slugger Ivan Drago (Vidic), and the Gingerbread Man (Brown). Holding steady in the middle is Corrie’s Chesney (Scholes), George Michael (Ronaldo) and a Trekkie Klingon (Nani).

Strike force is Andy Garcia (Berbatov), Shrek (Rooney) and The Hulk (Tevez). (ANI)

Fergie believes Man U can break through 80-goal mark

London, Jan.31 (ANI): Coach and manager Alex Ferguson reckons his strike force can break through the 80-goal mark this season and carry Manchester United to glory.

All the talk recently has been about the Red Devils record 11 consecutive Premier League games without conceding.

Now Fergie wants the attack to grab back some of the headlines as they did in cutting loose in the 5-0 demolition of West Brom in midweek.

And the United boss believes Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo can all go on and get 20 goals each this season.
The Sun quoted Ferguson as saying: “I certainly think they are capable of doing it. Quite rightly the defenders have been taking the credit this season up until now. I just hope now that it’s going to be the forwards who take the credit.”
“The case of Ronaldo is a good one. Last year was a miracle season. To score 42 goals as a winger, it is hard to imagine he could replicate that. Yet people are saying he has not had a great season but he’s still got 13 goals for us and had 11 assists. If we could dismiss last season altogether you would say that was incredible for a winger to score 13 goals by the halfway mark,” he added.

Right now Ronaldo has 13, Rooney 12, Berbatov 11 and Tevez 10. (ANI)
