Inauguration gown buyers flocking to thrift shops to buy recession-proof dresses!

Washington, Jan 9 (ANI): After tucking the highly coveted inaugural ball tickets in their purses, finalising a hot date and a place to stay afterwards, women are now thronging local thrift-shops looking for hand-me-down dresses and accessories to complete their looks for the day.

Thrift-shop merchants are saying that this winter, shopping-savvy and cash-deprived are flocking to discount and consignment stores to get the best buy for dressing up at President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural ceremony.

Goodwill stores “are a great place to find very inexpensive yet beautiful vintage and contemporary high-end fashions for the inaugural festivities,” The Washington Times quoted Brendan Hurley, vice president of marketing for the popular thrift-store chain, as saying in an e-mail.

He said that the Goodwill in Gaithersburg has reported “far more customers looking for formal wear this early in the season than usual.”

Hurley also said that customers were least bothered with wearing other people”s clothes.

This is because “many of the formal gowns that are donated to Goodwill have only been worn once, while some have never been worn at all,” he said.

Em Hall, Goodwill”s fashion blogger has found inaugural gowns from the 1960s designed and donned by Jane Quisenberry Wirtz, who was the wife of Willard Wirtz, 95, secretary of labor under President Kennedy.

And as far as men are concerned, Hall has suggested great deal of selections of tuxedos, suits and shirts.

“The classic black tux is a must-have. Satin lapel, side-seam satin stripe – this is most certainly the time to go all out,’ she said.

Michelle Sterling, founder of the Global Image Group, a style consulting firm said that shopping for inaugural gowns and tuxedos at nontraditional places is a sign of the times.

“With the down economy, many people are cleaning out their closets and selling their old clothes. You never know if you”ll find vintage Chanel, Dior or Gucci in a consignment store,” she said. (ANI)

UK’s Marks and Spencer to sack 1,000 employees

London, Jan.6 (ANI): UK fashion retailer Marks and Spencer will announce the sacking of 1,000 employees tomorrow after experiencing dire Christmas trading.

Several hundred more from the head office and support functions are also to be sacked.

Debenhams and Next are also expected today to unveil their worst Christmas performances in recent history.

The fashion chains Principles, Oasis, Karen Millen and Warehouse – all owned by Mosaic – have had an emergency restructuring team sent in from Deloitte.

According to The Times, these stores employ about 5,000 staff whose jobs will be at risk unless a new lender is found to refinance the business.

Waterford Wedgwood, the china and glassware company, went into receivership yesterday, threatening nearly 2,000 British jobs.

Adams, which went into administration after Christmas, shed another 850 staff by closing all 111 children’s clothing shops and Passion for Perfume, a chain of 46 stores, collapsed with the loss of all 185 staff.

The last 197 Wool-worth stores will close today, taking its total losses to 27,000, while

Monsoon Accessorize is facing a revolt from suppliers after it asked manufacturers to cut prices by 5 per cent.

Sales over Christmas at Marks and Spencer are thought to have fallen by 8.5 per cent once new stores are taken out of the equation. M and S, which last year made workers’ redundancy packages less generous, has cut investment recently to reduce its three billion pound debt.

Unemployment is now rising at a faster rate than during the 1990s recession. This week’s job news will pile more pressure on the Bank of England to cut interest rates on Thursday from two per cent to a 314-year record low. (ANI)

Genius introduces infrared webcams for night recording

Langenfeld, Germany – Genius has introduced a new infrared webcam dubbed the iSlim321R. The camera’s infrared technology and high resolution allows users to take quality images, even in poor lighting or in night-time conditions, said the Langenfeld-based company.

The night vision technology switches on automatically, if it is too dark. Additional light sources to avoid dark shadows or over- exposure are unnecessary.

The webcam can be attached to a notebook or a desktop monitor with a clip. Genius says the webcam is available in stores for 29.99 euros (42 dollars). (dpa)
