Schoolteachers baton-charged in Lucknow on Teachers’ Day

Lucknow, Sep 5(ANI): At least 12 primary schoolteachers suffered injuries during a demonstration to demand confirmation of their jobs and increments on Teachers’ Day.

The teachers alleged they were staging a peaceful protest when the police, for no fault of their own, baton-charged them.

“The teachers had staged a peaceful protest. During the demonstration, the police baton-charged the teachers on the orders Chief Minister Mayawati. This is the gift to all the teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day,” said Suraj Yadav, a teacher.

Meanwhile, the police said they had to use force to disperse the protestors after they blocked the road.

“Today, in front of Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) teachers had staged a sit-in protest. Some people tried to block the road. They were requested to clear the road. Stones were pelted in which our ADM (Additional District Magistrate) and SP (Superintendent of Police) city and others have been injured. They were chased away by the police,” said R N Dwivedi, police circle officer.

The police further claimed that no one was seriously injured in the incident. (ANI)

Jo Wood taking tips from Mick Jagger to win ‘Strictly Come Dancing’

London, Sep 4 (ANI): Jo Wood, who is participating in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, is getting performance tips from none other than Mick Jagger for winning the show.

The ex-model has been chasing her ex-hubby Ronnie Wood’s flamboyant bandmate for advice on how to shine in the contest.

It is believed that Jo, 53, is ultra-competitive and wants to gain an advantage over her younger rivals, such as The Bill’s Ali Bastian and ex-EastEnder Natalie Cassidy, both 26.

“Jo’s been after some performance tips from Mick Jagger,” the Sun quoted a BBC1 insider as saying.

“She knows that he’s got lots of experience as a showman and she really wants to make sure she dazzles in the competition.

“So who better than the Rolling Stones’ frontman for some advice? The pair are pals and she’s really keen to do her best on Strictly,” added the insider.

Jo, paired with hunk Brendan Cole, has been working very hard and practising the dances for hours on end, which has left her with painful feet.

The mum of four was married to Stones guitarist Ronnie, 62 and has admitted she would never have got the chance to take part in the show if not for the split.

And now she wants to prove that she can stand on her own two feet by winning the show. (ANI)

Archaeologists unearth 5,000-year-old “cathedral” in Britian

London, August 26 (ANI): A team of archaeologists has unearthed a Neolithic “cathedral” – a massive building of a kind never before seen in Britain, which go back nearly 5,000 years, easily predating the Egyptian pyramids.

According to a report in The Press and Journal, the “cathedral”, at 82 ft long and 65 ft wide, is placed between two of Orkney’s most famous Neolithic landmarks, the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness.

Even the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness would have seemed quite small in the presence of the cathedral-type building, which would have stood on the spot that has now been excavated.

Nick Card, from the Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology, who is leading the dig, said the building was effectively a cathedral for the north of Scotland.

“It’s spectacular,” he said. “There were hints at the end of last season that we had an enormous building here and now we are able to define it more,” he added.

What is interesting is that the shape and size of the building are visible, with the walls still standing to a height of more than three feet.

They are 16 feet thick and surround a cross-shaped inner sanctum where the excavation team have found examples of art and furniture created from stone.

It seems that the building was surrounded by a paved outer passage. This could have formed a labyrinth that would have led people through darkness to the chamber at the heart of the building.

“This is architecture on a monumental scale and the result is the largest structure of its kind anywhere in the north of Britain. It’s one of those finds of a lifetime,” Card said.

The building probably served as some kind of temple, maybe for remembering the dead. It may have been a place where sacrifices, even human sacrifices, were offered up.

Other buildings, over 50ft long and 30ft wide, have also been discovered.

According to Dr Colin Richards, a leading expert on the period, the building would have stood at the heart of Neolithic Orkney.

“A structure of this nature would have been renowned right across the north of Scotland – and is unprecedented anywhere in Britain,” he said. (ANI)

Rolling Stones’ banned controversial docu leaked online

Washington, August 21 (ANI): A controversial documentary based on the Rolling Stones while they were touring the US in 1972 has found its way to the Internet.

The veteran rockers put a ban on ‘Cocksucker Blues’ over its content, including rock and roll antics, such as footage showing the musicians taking drugs.

The group placed a court order on the documentary, stating it could hit the screens legally only in the presence of its director photographer Robert Frank, reports Contactmusic.

But the eye-popping film emerged on FlavorWire.com’s blog on August 19.

Referring to the footage, guitarist Keith Richards once said: “If anyone in America saw it, we’d never be let in the country again.” (ANI)

Scientists discover sea monster with 289 Stones in its gut

Washington, August 21 (ANI): Paleontologists working in southern Utah, US, have unearthed a Dolichorhynchops plesiosaur-a gigantic Dinosaur Era marine reptile-with 289 stones in its gut.

“At the moment, it seems as though the stones served some sort of digestive purpose, helping to grind up bits of shell or bony material within the gut,” Rebecca Schmeisser, a University of Nebraska paleontologist, told Discovery News.

What’s particularly surprising in this case is that the plesiosaur had a relatively short neck.

It’s neck was long by today’s standards, giraffes excluded, but for a plesiosaur, Dolichorhynchops possessed a puny neck.

“The discovery of the gastroliths associated with this plesiosaur specimen were particularly exciting because most plesiosaur gastroliths are found associated with the long-neck morphotype,” Schmeisser explained, adding that “the stones described in our paper are much lighter and smaller than those found in long-neck plesiosaurs.”

This is intriguing, because paleontologists had previously theorized that the stones might have served as ballast, or a means of balancing the animal’s weight underwater.

Now, it could be that the Dolichorhynchops kept swallowing stones that were too light for this purpose, but that’s a doubtful sceanrio.

Modern birds, in addition to their already high fiber diet full of nuts, seeds and fruits, swallow grit.

The grit takes the place of certain strong muscles and bones, such as those associated with the jaw, which help to pulverize and process food.

Birds can then retain their relatively light and dainty anatomical design with the aid of grit.

Some dinosaurs also possessed gastroliths, perhaps for a similar reason. Dinosaurs, like hefty sauropods, weren’t lightweights, but their heads and necks were, relative to the rest of their enormous bodies.

Plesiosaurs were not dinosaurs, even though they looked a bit like underwater dinosaurs.

Plesiosaur behavior was more comparable to that of modern day sea turtles and seals, but the prehistoric animals weren’t at all related to turtles and seals.

It’s possible that the stomach stone/grit solution to digestion independently evolved in plesiosaurs, dinosaurs and modern birds, but more research is needed. (ANI)

Tennis ace Andy Murray in pet scare

London, July 16 (ANI): Scottish professional tennis player Andy Murray was in a tizzy when his pet dog had to be rushed to the vet, after it ate many rocks from the garden.

Murray, 22, became worried when his border terrier pet dog Maggie started suffering from a mystery illness.

He had a pet ambulance collect Maggie from his 5million-pound home in Oxshott, Surrey, and an X-ray revealed the rocks.

Vets removed them, and Maggie was back to her playful self in a couple of days.

“Stones are usually left to pass through a dog’s body but these were too big,” the Sun quoted a source as saying. (ANI)

Closeness to Bruni’s ex flame Jagger forces Sarkozy to axe Paris ‘love nest’ plans

London, May 19 (ANI): French President Nicolas Sarkozy has cancelled plans of buying a “love nest” in Paris, because wife Carla Bruni’s ex-flame Mick Jagger has a penthouse in the same building, it has emerged.

It was being reported that the 41-year-old supermodel was “very keen” on buying the 10-million pound flat in Paris, however, hubby Sarkozy was “uncomfortable” regarding the proximity to the Rolling Stones singer.

Carla and Mick were an item for three years until 1996, but have stayed in touch, reports The Sun.

Tom Waits had forbidden Keith Richards from talking about him for biography

Washington, May 12 (ANI): Rolling Stones star Keith Richards was forbidden to talk about his friendship with Tom Waits to celebrated British journalist Barney Hoskyns by the gravel-voiced singer himself.

Hoskyns approached Richards while researching Waits for his new book ‘Lowside of the Road: A Life of Tom Waits’, and was delighted when the rocker agreed to be interviewed.

“Tom and his wife asked Keith not to speak to me… I just don’t think they want anyone to know too much about Tom Waits. They don’t want any major revelations creeping out,” Contactmusic quoted the writer as saying.

He added: “He’s the pre-eminent cult figure of our time, a maverick who cannot be categorised and his whole persona is a screen Waits hide behind. He’s fascinating and perhaps we don’t need to know too much about him.”

However, Hoskyns conducted over 70 interviews for his unauthorised expose, and he found out that Waits could well be responsible in some way for the Rolling Stones’ longevity.

The writer added: “Steve Jordan, who was Keith’s drummer in ‘The Expensive Winos’ told me that Keith was creatively spent in the mid-1980s and it was Waits’ records that inspired him to go off and do solo work – and that fuelled his work with the Stones.”

Hoskyns will launch his much-anticipated new Waits biography in Los Angeles on May 15 with a book signing at the Mr. Musichead Gallery. (ANI)

Taliban using Swat emerald money to fund terrorism

Peshawar, May 4 (ANI): The money earned from mining and selling gemstones in Swat and Shangla district of Pakistan is used by the Taliban for terrorism, according to local entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs in a Gem Bazaar, organised by the Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company at Namak Mandi, said that the Taliban were using the money for terrorist activities in Swat, Buner and Dir districts of Malakand division.

Babu Khan, an entrepreneur from Swat who had displayed emeralds in the bazaar, said that Taliban had started extensive mining through hired labourers and were selling the precious stones in the black market.

He said plunderers had also taken over several mines of high quality gemstones, one of which had earned the government about Rs 90 million in a single auction in the past.

Another entrepreneur from Swat, Muhammad Ali, said that the Taliban had also taken over the Mingora emerald mine.

The Shamozai emeralds mine, and the Gujaro Killay emerald mine in the adjacent district of Shangla, are also under the control of the Swat Taliban, the Daily Times reported.

Stones extracted from these mines are auctioned in the premises of the Mingora mine every Sunday, where dealers from all over Pakistan come to shop, he said.

The federal and provincial governments have not taken any action over “this looting and plunder of state property,” Muhammad Ali said.

Imran Inam, a senior official of the Gems and Jewellery Development Company, said that the US is also concerned over the Taliban occupation of emerald mines in Swat and Shangla and had talked to the Pakistani government. (ANI)

UNHCR launches its ‘Gimme Shelter’ campaign through Facebook

The branch of United Nations responsible for protecting and supporting refugees – UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) on Tuesday joined a charity program triggered by the popular social networking site Facebook. The UNHCR is using the Facebook to raise funds for the uprooted, displaced people in Afghanistan, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Sudan.

Growing increasingly in popularity, Facebook, which has achieved the milepost of 200 million active users, has recently introduced new “charity” feature to commemorate its achievement. The new “charity” feature of Facebook allows its users to make donations to 16 non-profit organizations, including UNHCR.

The Facebook users can offer “charity gifts” for the ‘Gimme Shelter’ campaign of UNHCR and other organizations. She told that the ‘Gimme Shelter’ campaign of UNHCR, featuring the classic Rolling Stones song, “Gimme Shelter,” is based on a short film of the same name, directed by Academy Award winner American actor Ben Affleck and filmed by another Academy Award winner John Toll. Picturized in the DRC’s volatile North Kivu province, the film depicts the suffering and hopes of Congolese civilians uprooted by the conflict.

Facebook spokeswoman Kathleen Loughlin stated is significant platform for raising funds for rufugees. She said, “Facebook now has more than 200 million active users.

While an important milestone for the company, we believe 200 million people, as an interconnected whole, have a greater opportunity to initiate and affect positive change.”

Architectural treasures damaged in Italian earthquake

Rome, April 7 (DPA) While public attention in Italy continued to focus Tuesday on the human toll of the earthquake that struck the central Abruzzo region, details of widespread damage to many historical buildings has also began to emerge.

In Abruzzo’s regional capital L’Aquila, originally built in the Middle Ages as a mountain stronghold, it were mostly modern buildings that were flattened when the main shock struck the city early Monday morning.

Experts noted that had the earthquake occurred hours before, people attending Palm Sunday Mass at L’Aquila’s Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio would have been in grave danger.

The earthquake caused the collapse of the roof over the central transept area of the medieval church, widely considered a masterpiece of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

At another church, the 16th century San Bernardino, the belltower crumbled. Stones also tumbled from the city’s main cathedral, which was rebuilt after a 1703 earthquake.

Boasting several gems representing changing archaeological styles through the ages, L’Aquila also saw the destruction of the dome of the Anime Sante church, designed by the famed Neoclassical architect Giuseppe Valadier.

The dome of another church, the Baroque-style Sant’ Agostino, toppled down onto an adjacent building housing the city’s main government offices.

Surrounding towns, also suffered losses to their architectural heritage.

Among these, a tiny medieval mountain hamlet voted Italy’s prettiest in a recent poll, San Stefano di Sessanio, lost its landmark watchtower.

The earthquake’s main shock was also felt as far way as Rome, some 100 km from the epicentre, initially raising fears of possible damage to the Terme di Caracalla, located near the ancient capital’s centre.

But officials denied reports that fresh cracks had emerged on the walls of of the Terme, the famed thermal baths built by the Emperor Caracalla.

Loch Ness boulder may have been used as guide for crop sowing and harvesting 5000 yrs ago

London, March 28 (ANI): An amateur archaeologist has suggested that a giant boulder on a hill overlooking Loch Ness, a Scottish lake, was used as a guide for crop sowing and harvesting by residents of the Great Glen more than 5000 years ago.

According to a report in The Inverness Courier, John Forsyth, the archaeologist in question, is convinced that the five-meter wide rock was intentionally placed there by early man.

Forsyth said that the boulder was positioned and sculpted so people could use it as a marker against the sun to signal when their crops should be planted in spring and harvested in autumn.

He believes a community lived to the east of the boulder, which is between Creag Dhearg and Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh, and used the setting of the sun to establish the spring and autumn equinoxes – when day and night is roughly the same length.

As part of his research, Forsyth used a global positioning system to locate another rock behind his home, which lies directly east of the boulder and has the same latitude, suggesting an alignment that he thinks is deliberate.

“I’m very confident it’s from that time because the boulder is firmly embedded in peat and there is lichen on its surface,” he said.

How the people of the time managed to put the boulder there is another question, admitted Forsyth, who is confident of his findings, despite another school of thought that markers were also used by man in an attempt to find out more about the sun, moon and stars.

According to Highland Council archaeologist Kirsty Cameron, “People who were living in that time had a very good use of astronomy.”

“We encourage people to contact us about sites of possible interest but establishing a time for this is hard to prove and because it’s a stone, it can’t be excavated. I would be keen to find out more about it,” she said.

Forsyth believes the boulder was last moved at around the same time as the Callanish Standing Stones on Lewis and the structures at Stonehenge were erected. (ANI)

Marianne Faithfull’s life to be turned into film

London, Mar 14 (ANI): The life of singer Marianne Faithfull, the real wild girl of rock, is to be told in a film.

At a time of her life, Faithfull, who once dated Mick Jagger, sank into heroin addiction and homelessness.

She published an autobiography in 1994.

And, now she has agreed to have her life transformed into a film.

“It won’t happen right away but we have found a director who I trust who wants to make a film of the book,” The BBC quoted her, as saying.

However, Faithfull, who is now releasing her 22nd album, said she did not want a say in casting an actress to play her.

She said: “I’m not getting involved. I’ll read the script, when it’s ready, which isn’t for a long time, and then I’ll leave it to the director and the actress he chooses.

“I don’t want to have much to do with it. I want to read the script and like the script and then I’m going to let go of it and let them do what they want. That’s the way to do it.”

Now 62, Faithfull added that her life was “a great story”.

Educated in a convent, she was discovered by the Rolling Stones’ manager at 17.

She was once found wearing nothing but a rug during an infamous police search of Stones guitarist Keith Richards’ house in 1967.

The singer spent two years living on the streets of London in the 1970s, addicted to heroin. (ANI)

The list of bizarre requests made by Jacko for comeback tour

London, Mar 8 (ANI): King of Pop Michael Jackson has made a list of bizarre requests for his comeback gigs at the O2 Arena in July.

The ‘Thriller’ hitmaker has asked that his dressing room be equipped with no fewer than four hair driers.

His requests also include 24 hand towels, ten clothing rails, a nailbrush, odourless air freshener and even raspberry-scented candles.

“This just doesn’t sound like your regular rock gig at all,” the Daily Star quoted American rock event planner Katie McCubbin, who has helped stage concerts at huge venues for megabands including the Rolling Stones and U2, as saying.

“Some bands demand never-ending supplies of exotic foods, designer booze and the most expensive luxuries that money can buy.

“Michael’s rider isn’t just modest by industry standards – it’s downright weird.

McCubbin added: “Who needs four hair driers? Who needs 24 hand towels? And who’d bother to add a fifty-cent nail brush to the list?”

Jackson made a demand of 11 dressing rooms, eight of which will be for his band, backing singers and dancers. Three will be for the singer himself and members of his inner circle.

The 50-year-old will have a direct dial international phone line with internet access as well as an entertainment system and a 42-inch flat screen TV.

And the singer is insisting on honey and fresh lemons and limes to soothe his throat.

His master dressing room must also have a dimmer switch, a trouser press and three ‘over-sized’ leather chairs.

There will also be two “holding areas” for family and friends with sushi and dim sum platters plus wines and beers. (ANI)

John Lennon, Mick Jagger’s new pics unearthed

London, Mar 5 (ANI): New photographs of ‘The Beatles’ and ‘The Rolling Stones’, which were clicked during the 1960s, have been discovered.

One of the pictures shows late Beatles member John Lennon taking a backstage cigarette break.

There is also one photograph showing Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards cutting Charlie Watts’ hair, and one featuring Mick Jagger relaxing in front of TV.

The photos, which have never been seen before, were clicked while the two bands toured America during the 1960s.

The pictures were found inside a duffel bag after 45 years.

The shots show the behind-the-scenes, intimate and unguarded moments of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and they had been shot by their former tour manager Bob Bonis.

The collection of more than 50 pictures, being revealed to the public for the first time, are part of 3,500 pictures taken by Bonis, the US tour manager who helped organise the so-called British invasion of America in the Swinging Sixties.

The photographs, which also include poolside shots of the two bands drinking and relaxing, as well as “goofing” around in hotel rooms, were found by Bonis’s son Alex stored in an old duffel bag.

Not Fade Away Gallery will premiere the exhibition, titled ‘The British Are Coming: The Beatles and The Rolling Stones 1964 – 66′, in New York.

Larry Marion, Gallery director, said that the frames captured a pivotal time in the two bands’ careers; their first tours of America from 1964 to 1966.

“In more than 20 years as a rock archaeologist I’ve never come upon a discovery of this magnitude,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“I’ve shown the photos to Ringo, who loved them. Keith [Richards] is going to come see the show,” he said.

Bonis, who died in 1991, had never meant to make the pictures public, and thus kept the negatives and slides private until his son decided to show the world. (ANI)

Keith Richards’ strange habits picked up by son

New York, Feb 28 (ANI): Keith Richards, the founding member of The Rolling Stones, seems to have passed on his strange traits to his son.

Richards, 65, had made headlines two years ago when he said he snorted his dad’s ashes with cocaine, and later insisted that he was just kidding.

Now in the upcoming pop-culture bio ‘A Day in the Life’, Robert Greenfield reveals that Marlon Richards, the singer’s son with Anita Pallenberg, had strange habits as a youth.

“Marlon was a bit wild. He would eat ants, and Keith would say, ‘He wants to eat [bleep]ing ants? No problem, man. Let him eat what he wants’,” the New York Post quoted Charley Weber, Richards’ pal, as telling Greenfield.

“Marlon would put his hand into the butter in the middle of the big dinner table and eat it, and Keith loved it,” he had added. (ANI)
