SC extends stay on Kanshi Ram memorial construction

New Delhi, Sep. 18 (ANI): Expressing dissatisfaction over the Mayawati Government’s plea, the Supreme Court on Friday extended the stay order on its earlier ruling for stoppage of work at Kanshi Ram Memorial Sthal in Lucknow.

“The affidavit is not satisfactory. The question here has many, many burning issues,” it observed during a brief hearing in the case,” a Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and Aftab Alam noted.t said the question was whether one could spend so much of money from the state or public exchequer for the purpose.

“Suppose today the legislature decides that 80 per cent of budgetary allocation should be spent on such works of memorials and statues…is it not justiciable,” the Bench asked.

“Serious questions arise in this petition…the cabinet and the legislature have to act under the Constitution,” the Bench added.

The next hearing in the case is on October 5th, and the parties are asked to file their responses to the affidavit by September 29th.

In a detailed affidavit filed in response to the show cause notice issued on September 11, the state government had claimed it had the highest regard for the apex court and that it believed in carrying out its directions in “letter and spirit.”

On September 8, the apex court had ruled that no further construction activities should take place at the memorials which have cost the exchequer 2,600 crore rupees.

However, media reports said construction activities were going on in full swing despite the court’s directive, following which the bench had issued a show cause notice. (ANI)

Melbourne, Sep 18 (ANI): A Holiday Inn hotel made entirely of key cards has been unveiled in New York.

The 37-square-metre hotel, built by world record-holding Cardstacker Bryan Berg, is made from more than 200,000 key cards and weighs 1814 kilograms.

It includes a guest bedroom, bathroom and lobby, with life-sized furniture.

The design was created by Holiday Inn, the world’s largest hotel group, to mark the relaunch of 1200 of its hotels around the world.

“The Key Card Hotel is a fun and interactive way to showcase the changes happening at our hotels and is the only structure of its kind to ever be created by a hotel brand,” News.com.au quoted Kevin Kowalski, Senior Vice President, Global Brand Management, Holiday Inn, as saying.

Berg, who will also build a freestanding three-metre replica of New York’s Empire State Building in the lobby of the Key Card Hotel using Holiday Inn playing cards, said constructing the hotel has been a great challenge.

“This is my largest cardstacking challenge to date and the only card creation I have ever made at full human scale,” Berg added about the hotel.

The company’s 1 billion dollar relaunch is one of the largest in the history of the hospitality industry. (ANI)

Now, unwed Malaysian couple to be whipped for trying to have car sex

Shah Alam (Malaysia), Sep. 18 (ANI): Following the whipping episode of the Malaysian model who was sentenced for drinking beer, an unmarried couple is now being subjected to the controversial canning sentence under the country’s Sharia law for trying to have sex.

Mohammad Shahrin Abd Majid, 29, and his lover Nadiah Najat Hussin, 24, pleaded guilty to attempting to have sex in a car, were fined 5,000 ringgits or 12 months’ jail and ordered to be caned six times each, the New Strait Times Online reports.

Both Shahrin and Nadiah have paid the fine. On Wednesday, the Sharia High Court of Shah Alam granted a stay on the caning pending an appeal following an application by the couple’s counsel.

The Court has also advised both accused to marry as soon as possible.

The couple had claimed that they were to be engaged soon, and scheduled to be married in February next year.

“You are still young… after Hari Raya seek consent from both your parents to marry,” he said.

Shahrin and Nadiah would be sent to prison in order to receive the caning if their appeal gets dismissed.

Earlier, former Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno hogged the international headlines when she was sentenced for canning under Sharia law for drinking beer at a nightclub. (ANI)

The Caribbean hotel that offers $300 off to couples conceiving during stay!

London, September 15 (ANI): Here’s good news for those planning ‘good news’. A luxury resort on a Dutch Caribbean island has come up with an unusual scheme-a discount of 300 dollars for couples if they conceive a child during their stay.

The Westin Resort in Aruba introduced the offer, open to guests staying at the hotel before December 18 of this year, in a bid to lure future mothers and fathers.

Couples can bag a 300-dollar ‘Conception Credit’ if they are able to prove the baby was conceived on the resort’s premises during the time of their stay, reports the Telegraph.

And if successful, couples can also enjoy at least one nights’ complimentary accommodation at the 200-dollar a night resort. (ANI)

Rihanna wants ‘stay away’ ban lifted off Chris Brown

Melbourne, Sep 4 (ANI): Barbadian singer Rihanna is reportedly very furious and upset over the fact that her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown has been ordered to stay away from her.

Brown, 20, was formally sentenced on September 1 to five years probation for the February assault on Rihanna, and also to six months of community labour in Virginia.

He will be spending 1400 hours removing graffiti and washing cars.

He has also been ordered not to contact the ‘Umbrella’ singer in any way for the next five years.

He also must stay 100 yards from her, unless they are both at an entertainment-related event, in which he must stay 10 yards away.

But sources have revealed that Rihanna has been working to get Brown’s restraining order lifted.

“When Rihanna got word from her attorney that the judge refused to lift the ban, she was really upset,” News.com.au quoted an insider as having told Britain’s Now magazine.

“She started calling her friends and saying how stupid it was and that Chris would never hurt her again. She was really indignant about it,” the source added. (ANI)

‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ make it to Collins English Dictionary

London, Aug 31 (ANI): ‘Twittering’, ‘hmm’, and ‘heh’ are among the 267 words that have been added to this year’s Collins English Dictionary, all thanks to teenagers who use such words on social networking websites.

With teenagers increasingly using these grunts and sighs in words on Twitter and other such websites, the need to find spellings for sounds that were traditionally used only in speech has also spawned “meh” (an expression of dissatisfaction) and “mwah” (the sound of a noisy kiss).

Users of social networking sites may also be responsible for the resurgence of “heigh-ho” or “hey-ho” – an exclamation of weariness, disappointment, surprise or happiness – that went out of fashion in the early 20th century.

In fact, Twitter-the microblogging site that allows people to communicate in messages of 140 characters or less-has also been accepted as a verb by the dictionary to describe the act of using Twitter.

Other internet-derived terms include “noob” (short for newbie, a term for someone unfamiliar with web etiquette) and “woot” (an expression of joy conveying a sense of achievement).

New abbreviations used for convenience in text messages such as “OMG” (short for “oh, my God”) “soz” (short for sorry) and wtf (short for “what the f***?”) are also included in the dictionary.

Some new words in the dictionary could make many traditionalists cringe in their seats-new portmanteau words purporting to describe a new trend include “staycation” (a combination of stay and vacation, meaning to take a holiday without going abroad) and “glamping” (glamorous camping).

“Buzzkillers” (someone who stops other people from enjoying themselves), and “beer o’clock” (a time considered appropriate to start drinking) may also take many traditionalists by surprise.

“English is very good at absorbing new words. [But] in three or four years a lot of these words may have fallen out of use and might well come out of the dictionary,” Times Online quoted Elaine Higgleton, the Editorial Director for Collins, as saying. (ANI)

Obama may cut his Martha’s Vineyard holiday short

Washington, Aug. 28 (ANI): US President Barack Obama and the First Lady, who are holidaying at an island of Martha’s Vineyard, will travel to Boston on Friday evening to attend Senator Edward Kennedy’s funeral.

Obama is scheduled to deliver a eulogy on Saturday morning.

The change in schedule is due to bad weather forecasts. The Obamas want to ensure they can make it off the island of Martha’s Vineyard to Boston ahead of a coming storm.

According to deputy spokesman Bill Burton, tropical Storm Danny which could reach hurricane strength this weekend might cut short the Obamas stay on Martha’s Vineyard.

They plan to return to the Island after the funeral Saturday, if the weather allows, and then leave for Washington as scheduled Sunday. If the storm prevents a return, the Obamas would head to Washington from Boston on Saturday, Politico quoted him, as saying.

While the first family spent the day biking on Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday, Obama had begun work on the eulogy.

“It is something that he obviously takes very seriously. He’s been working on it. He’s obviously got a great team of speechwriters who he works with. This is going to be a very personal statement that he makes on Saturday,” Burton said.

With speculation swirling over who will replace Kennedy, Burton said Obama would not weigh in on the debate. That “isn’t a scale he’s going to put his thumb on,” Burton said.

Obama also doesn’t think the time is right to discuss renaming a health care bill for Kennedy. And Burton suggested that Obama would steer clear of the “win one for Teddy” rallying cry to boost the bill that some supporters have adopted.

Next week, Obama will have a health care event Tuesday and then travel to Camp David on Wednesday ahead of the Labor Day weekend. (ANI)

‘Musharraf, now an angry, frustrated and isolated figure, divorced from ground realities’

Lahore, Aug.26 (ANI): Senior Pakistan Muslim League -Quaid (PML-Q) leader Humayun Akhtar has described former Pakistan President General Pervez Musahrraf as a person ‘completely divorced from ground realities’.

Akhtar, who recently met Musharraf over dinner during his brief stay in London, found Musharraf angry, frustrated and isolated figure who was completely divorced from the ground realities

According to sources, Musharraf believes that he does not have much public support in Pakistan and is scared of the Pakistan Muslim League -Nawaz (PML-N) chief coming to power.

During his meeting with Musharraf, Akhtar told other leaders present there that Sharif was poised to lead the country once again, as he enjoys massive support in all parts of Pakistan.

According to The Nation, several close associates of Musharraf including Brigadier (retired) Niaz and Tariq Aziz were present at the meeting.

Sources said during the meeting that Musharraf asked Akhtar to join hands with him and support him in forming a united Muslim League under his (Musharraf’s) leadership. (ANI)

Military rule damaged Pak Army’s image: General Abbas

Rawalpindi, Aug 24 (ANI): The rule of former Pakistan army chiefs-General Ayub Khan, General Yahya Khan, General Zia-ul-Haq and General Pervez Musharraf had badly damaged the image of the armed forces, according to Director-General Inter Services Public Relations Major- General Athar Abbas.

The views of Major- General Abbas were expressed in an article available on ISPR’s website.

“The founding father envisaged Pakistan as a sovereign, modern and democratic state based on the principles of equality and justice. The failure of successive governments to establish a tolerant political culture, viable political system and good governance has driven people to a state of disillusionment,” he writes.

“In the past we have tried various systems but have not succeeded. The stunted development of our political system is mainly due to the fact that initially our state developed as a ‘security state’ due to incomplete partition and no urgency was felt to have a constitution.

“Subsequent corruption and incompetence led to frequent near collapse situations making way for military interventions. As soon as military took over, realising that it could do better, it tended to prolong the stay in power. This led to concentration of power in one hand and eroded the system of checks and balances,” Major General Abbas adds.

The unfortunate death of Quaid-e-Azam soon after partition left a political vacuum and chaos. Commander-in-Chief General Ayub Khan’s appointment as the Defence Minister, while he was serving, was the instance of the political government voluntarily ceding authority to the army.

The result was a bloodless coup in 1958. His initial period, 1958-1961 was known as golden era. Yahya Khan’s brief period from 1969-1972 resulted in separation of East Pakistan.

During Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s regime 1972-1977 the army stayed out of politics. The rigging of 1977 elections brought the army back in politics. General Zia’s era (1977-1988) fully entrenched the army in politics and started the era of Islamisation of the society.

During the period from 1988-1999, power kept shuttling between Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. The era where the government functioning came to a grinding halt several times and governance suffered badly due to infighting of politicians.

General Musharraf ruled from 1999-2008. It was a military cum quasi-military rule that achieved many things but resulted in a severe political turmoil and badly affected the image of Army. (ANI)

Dayanidhi Maran to lead joint trade delegation to Japan

New Delhi, July 16 (ANI): Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran will lead the joint trade delegation of textiles sector to Japan on July 20.

The seventeen-member delegation comprises the representatives of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (TEXPROCIL), the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Promotion Council (SRTEPC), the Knitwear Technology Mission, and leading textiles manufacturers and exporters from Tirupur and Coimbatore textiles clusters.

During his visit, Maran will inaugurate the Indian Pavilion at the Japan International Fashion Fair (JIFF), known as Mega Apparel and Textile Show, at Tokyo, Japan on July 22.

The Fair will run till July 24, and 44 Indian textiles and clothing exporters have booked 50 stalls. The AEPC along with the SRTEPC and the TEXPROCIL are participating in the Fair.

With a view to diversify the textiles and clothing exports and reduce dependence on USA and EU 27, the Government is promoting exports to South East Asia under its ‘Look East Policy’.

An important component of this policy is to attract of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Japan is one of the biggest consumers of textiles and clothing, but India has very negligible market share of 1.12 per cent in Japanese import basket.

To further these objectives, during his stay in Tokyo, Maran will address a business meeting hosted by the Japan-India Business Cooperation Committee (JIBC) and will use this platform to solicit investment in Indian textiles sector, where 100 per cent FDI is permissible.

The Indian Government is conscious of the fact that textiles industry needs modernization and there is huge scope for Japanese investment to upgrade spinning, weaving, processing and garmenting facilities.

The Government is making serious efforts to attract investment in this important segment of national economy. This interaction is part of series of interactions, which Maran has conceptualized as part of Government efforts to modernize Indian textiles industry and explore new markets for Indian textiles and clothing exports.

The couple are to be granted Decree Nisi (non-absolute ruling) in the Family Division of the High Court.

Palin quit because she couldn’t take the heat, says Levi Johnston

Washington, July 14 (ANI): The ex-boyfriend of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s daughter, Levi Johnston, has claimed that Palin has decided to resign because she could not take the political heat anymore.

“She’s very smart. But, I just don’t think she can handle the stress level as governor-I don’t think she can handle it as president or vice president,” the Daily News quoted Johnston, as saying.

The 19-year-old high school dropout and former fiancé of Palin’s daughter Bristol, said on the “Today” show that he wouldn’t vote for Palin if she launched a presidential bid.

“If you would have asked that question a while back, I think I would have voted for her. But after what she has done now…I’d do just about anything for her. But I really don’t think I’d vote for her if she ran for president,” Johnston said.

Johnston also said he heard the vanquished GOP vice presidential nominee saying money was a primary motive.

“We had tons of offers coming in from everybody out there and just all kinds of ridiculous things. There’s been talk about it would be nice to just take the money and run,” he said.

Earlier, Palin’s spokeswoman publicly disputed Johnston’s commentary on her reasons for resigning.

“It is interesting to learn Levi is working on a piece of fiction while honing his acting skills,” the spokeswoman said.

On the show, Johnston also recalled his stay at the Palins’ last year, saying Palin would come home “stressed out” in the weeks following the election.

“She wasn’t as outgoing. I just didn’t see the spark in her eyes about, you know, being governor anymore. She was quiet, spending time in her room, he said. “We could tell something was wrong. She was sad, she lost. I mean, who wouldn’t be,” he said. (ANI)

Oz mums breeding a generation of ‘mummy’s boys’

Melbourne, July 8 (ANI): Australia is full of men, who belong to the generation of “mummies’ boys”, according to new data

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have revealed that 27 per cent of men, aged between 20 and 34, are still living with their parents – which is double the proportion of women.

Social demographer Bernard Salt has said that the difference might be because men generally marry younger women.

But he claimed that the constant pampering of their mothers often make such men to have unrealistic expectations of their partners.

“Men are living at home well into their twenties because they get free meals, free board, free laundry, free access to the family car and you can have your girlfriend stay in your bedroom overnight, so why would you ever leave home?” News.com.au quoted Salt as saying.

“Plus the fact mum dotes on you and that leads to that we may well be raising this entire generation of men who are effectively mummie’s boys. The problem being that when they go out and form a meaningful relationship they expect their girlfriend to pick up where mum left off,” he added.

Earlier, men generally left home at 18 and were fending for themselves managing their own household and budgets.

“If you’ve got mummy picking up your dirty washing at 27 – you never actually learn those skills,” he said. (ANI)

Wenger reveals why he snubbed Real Madrid offer

London, July 1 (ANI): Arsene Wenger revealed for the first time why he rejected the chance to leave Arsenal for Real Madrid.

The Gunners chief urged the world of football to avoid making “moral judgements” about the Bernabeu side, after admitting he was sorely tempted by the offer from incoming Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in May.

Wenger wanted reassurance from the Emirates board that there was unanimous support for his ideas of building a young squad and turning them into genuine challengers both domestically and in Europe, rather than simply trying to buy success.

Perez offered Wenger £6million a year in addition to the seemingly limitless transfer war chest that has subsequently landed Brazilian ace Kaka – unveiled yesterday – and Cristiano Ronaldo for a combined 136 million pounds.

Wenger was convinced during a three-hour summit meeting with chief executive Ivan Gazidis that he should not end his 13-year stay in North London, The Mirror reports.

He explained one of the main reasons for his decision was that he simply does not agree with the Perez philosophy.

“What Real want to do is produce what I would call a spectacle of football, a spectacular team. But I believe that when it comes to creating a team and a squad there is another dimension that exists, and that is my way of thinking,” said the Frenchman.

“I want to have success by building a team with a style, with a know-how, with a culture of play specific to the club and its fans and with young people. That is what I have chosen in my career and want to ensure I continue here at Arsenal.

“I am in a construction project with a young team, but my intention is to take that project to the ultimate end. For me, pleasure comes from watching those players showing the football I like to see played,” he said.

“I believe it is necessary to disregard moral judgement and to simply ask whether the operation will be profitable. In my opinion, to recruit more than three players in a transfer window, as Real plan, is taking a technical risk,” Wenger added. (ANI)
