BJP, Congress seek time for government formation in Jharkhand

Ranchi, May 31 (IANS) Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farook Monday summoned leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to discuss the formation of an alternative government in the state, a day after Shibu Soren quit as chief minister.

‘The governor called us Monday to know our party’s stand on the formation of an alternative government in the state. We have sought time as the issue will be decided by the central leaders,’ state BJP president Raghubar Das told IANS.

A Congress delegation met Farook immediately after the BJP meeting with the governor.

‘We are not in a hurry to form a government. We will form an alterative government only after ensuring the stability factor,’ state Congress president Pradeep Balmuchu told reporters.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president Babulal Marandi also met the governor.

Soren, who heads the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), met the governor and submitted his resignation Sunday evening, a day before he was to prove his majority in the 81-member state assembly. Sources said that eight of the JMM’s 18 legislators refused to face the trust vote Monday.

The JMM-led five-month-old government was propped up by the BJP with 18 members, the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) with five legislators and the Janata Dal-United’s two members.

The Congress has 14 members, the JVM-P 11, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal five legislators. There also are five independents.

The JMM-led government was reduced to minority after the party’s ally, BJP, finally withdrew support May 24.

After its talks with the BJP collapsed on the issue of sharing power by rotation of 28 months each, the JMM had been in talks with both the Congress and the JVM-P to form an alternative government and avoid President’s Rule in the state.

But with the Congress and its ally JVM-P failing to commit support to the JMM, Soren found no option but to resign.

Jharkhand was plunged into political uncertainty after Soren voted against the BJP’s cut motions on the federal budgetary cuts in Lok Sabha last month.

We are still a part of UPA: Mamata Banerjee We are still a part of UPA: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, May 6 (ANI): Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee has reiterated that her party is still a part of the UPA coalition at the Centre despite snapping ties with the Congress party for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Banerjee said: “We made commitments to support the UPA government. We had the commitment that we would be part of the UPA government if we would win the Parliamentary elections. We have been working according to our commitment.”

Mamata claimed that she and her party have always tried to maintain the alliance and worked hard accordingly.

She, however, virtually accused the Congress of being an unreliable ally which had even formed a government with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) in the past.
All this, even as she lured state Congress working president Subrata Mukherjee into the Trinamool fold, signaling a coup ahead of the civic polls in Bengal on May 30.

Mukherjee had resigned from his post and joined TMC on the contention the Congress party had shown soft corner for the ruling Left Front in the state.

On May 2, while announcing candidates for all 141 seats in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, Banerjee had blamed the Congress party, which has already released a list of 88 candidates, for the collapse of alliance in the civic polls.

The break-up between the TMC and the Congress party for the Kolkata civic polls is a dent to the consolidation of an anti-communist front in the state. (ANI)

Congress, Trinamool discuss seat-sharing for West Bengal civic polls

Kolkata, Mar 29 (ANI): The Congress Party and the Trinamool Congress have started a seat-sharing exercise for the upcoming civic elections in which they will be pitted against the Left Front.

State Congress chief Pranab Mukherjee hoped that differences, if any, would be sorted out amicably.

“We have discussed the preparation of the organizational elections like Municipal elections, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and elections in other 81 municipalities…in some places the discussions on the alliance had been started and in some places the discussions are yet to start. The preparation is on…we will take a very quick decision as soon as we get the reports from the district presidents,” Mukherjee said Sunday.

To a question, Mukherjee admitted there were problems in the tie-up arrangement for Murshidabad and Nadia districts, but was still hopeful for a solution.

Elections for the 82 municipal bodies are likely to be held in mid- 2010.

The Congress and the TMC tied up in West Bengal for last year”s general elections, giving a blow to the ruling Communists.

In the April/May 2009 parliamentary polls, the Communists won just 24 parliamentary seats, down from the 60 they had won in the 2005 polls. (ANI)

Congress screens aspiring candidates for polls in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Sep 12 (ANI): Congress party has begun shortlisting candidates aspiring for party’s nomination for the October 13 assembly elections in Maharashtra.

Congress party, which is running a coalition government with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra for the second term in a row, is yet to sort out hiccups on seat sharing with its ally.

As the days for nominations to open on September 18 draws close, state Congress party leaders went in a huddle in Mumbai to screen aspirants seeking ‘ticket’ to contest polls on the party symbol.

“I have given my profile, I have told about major problems in our area including drinking water and irrigation and people do not get benefited from the policies of the government,” said Anil Chandra Kumar Gupta, an aspirant from Tiroda seat of Gondia district.

Congress party, which also heads the central coalition, is on a high after its good performance in the April-May general elections. (ANI)

Congress protests against Uttarakhand Government in Dehradun

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Sep 7(ANI): Activists of Congress party on Monday protested against the Bharatiya Janata Party- led Government and accused it for ignoring the areas represented by the Congress here.

State Congress Chief Harak Singh Rawat led a protest march and sat on a hunger strike outside the Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal’s residence in Dehradun.

“The BJP ruled Government has completed two and a half years, but it has ignored opposition, especially Congress ruled legislative regions. Be it roads, drinking water schemes, construction of bridges, schools, universities and tubewells, BJP has not done any development work in our ruled regions,” said Harak Singh Rawat.

However, BJP described the protest as a political stunt and said that the Government would address the issues of the opposition.

“Today (September 7), the Chief Minister is out of station. He will return tomorrow from New Delhi. He will hold discussion with legislators of opposition and brief them about development works taking place in their regions,” said Uttrakhand Parliamentary Affair Minister Prakash Pant.

“Today’s act (protest) was politically motivated. The leader of opposition should have given a thought to his decision,” Pant added. (ANI)

Dalits in India find sponsors in Pakistan Radio

Abohar, May 29 (ANI): In its latest Punjabi Durbar programme the commentators have come up with the argument that Dalit leaders in India have been accepting the directives given to them from Brahmin leaders.

The programme has been attacking the integrity of Dalit leaders, who have been accused of forgetting the welfare of people of their community.

Radio Pakistan has alleged that Dalit leaders who have won elections in the past forgot to work for their community and accepting the diktats of ‘Brahmin’ leaders. Apparently the reference is directed to Mayawati, Chief Minister of U.P., who has an upper caste Advisor.

Villagers, living in the border areas, are amused.

Inderjit Singh Baserke, a Congress leader from Dalit community, however rubbishes such allegations. He points out that Dalits had reserved seats during the elections for Legislative Assembly and the Parliament. They have become MLAs and MPs. The children of Dalits have also got reservation in educational institutions and later in government jobs at all levels.

“I am proud of our Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru provided reservation to the children of Dalits and today they proudly hold posts of IAS officer, IPS, and PCS, oficers.

Many leaders of the Punjab state Congress party are Dalits. People of Dalit society are never ill-treated in Punjab. This is the land of our Gurus. Today, the Dalits enjoy an equal status with higher castes,” said Dalit leader Inderjit Singh Baserke, the general secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress, Punjab.

“Radio Pakistan wants to provoke the Dalits in India. We have to be careful,” Baserke added.

The Constitution of India offers to its all citizens six fundamental rights– Right to equality, right to freedom of speech and expression, right against exploitation, right to freedom of religion, cultural and educational rights and right to constitutional remedies.

The rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India are fundamental rights and are enforceable in a court of law.

But who can enlighten the broadcasters of the Punjabi Durbar programme of Pakistan radio, who are presently finding it difficult cover items relating to the activities of the Taliban in their programmes. They seem to think that talking about Dalits in India is the answer. (ANI)

Ludhiana/ Amritsar/Patna, May 23 (ANI): Relatives of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh rejoiced, as he was sworn-in for a second successive term on Friday.

“We want to wish him all the best, everyone in the family is very happy.

We want to thank every one that they have chosen him for the second time and given a chance to an honest person who can work,” said Manpreet Singh.

“Manmohan Singh has been sworn in as the Prime Minister. The country did well during his regime. He has become the Prime Minister again and we are happy,” said Harpreet Singh, a resident.

In Patna, the youth activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate thumping victory of Congress.

“Manmohan Singh has become the Prime Minister for the second time. We have taken out a victory rally to celebrate this. Under the charismatic leadership of Rahul Gandhi, Congress has done so well that all the parties are ready to extend support to Congress,” said Manoj Sharma, Secretary, Bihar State Congress Committee, Patna.

In Kolkata, supporters of Trinamool Congress which is an ally of the UPA celebrated the imminent induction of their party’s founder Mamata Banerjee as a Cabinet Minister.

Holding posters of Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi, the revellers distributed sweets, applied ‘Gulal’ (coloured powder) and also raised slogans in favour of their leaders.

A soft-spoken economist, Manmohan Singh was sworn-in as the Prime Minister by President Pratibha Patil on Friday for a second successive term after his coalition won a sweeping victory in the mammoth, month-long general elections. Dr. Singh, 76, has named 19 members to his new cabinet, many of them veteran colleagues in his Congress party. Portfolios were not allocated.

Friday’s swearing-in would be followed by an expansion of the Council of Ministers on May 26. The expansion would include Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State (MoS) with independent charge as well as other Ministers of State. (ANI)

BJD will ‘explore all possibilities’ in Orissa after results

Bhubaneswar, May 16 (ANI): The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Orissa on Saturday said it would explore “all possibilities” after the results.

“We stand by what we had said earlier,” BJD secretary general Damodar Rout said, adding that his party was hoping to form the government of its own in the state and would support a non-BJP and non-Congress government in the centre.

He denied reports that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had phoned Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Regarding reports of talks between Congress leader Kamal Nath and Patnaik, Rout said, “Somebody might have talked to Patnaik informally.”

“We are confident about forming the government on our own strength in Orissa. We have already said we would not join any BJP or Congress-led government in the Centre.”

“After the poll results are out, we will explore all possibilities. We will see which party will protect the interest of the state. Congress has a long history of neglecting Orissa,” he said.

He said the party had not received any call from any NDA leaders.

Orissa went to the polls on April 16 and April 23 for its 21 seats. It also held simultaneous polls for elections to 147-member Assembly. (ANI)

EC issues notice to Congress leader Digvijay Singh for violating Model Code

New Delhi, Apr.25 (ANI): The Election Commission of India on Saturday issued a notice to senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh for violating the Model Code of Conduct.

The commission’s notice said that Singh would need to explain his adverse comments against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

Mayawati is said to have lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister for seeking to invoke the use of the Central Bureau Investigation to warn her ruling Bahujan Samaj Party against harassing Congress workers in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh’s threat was issued at an election rally in Hardoi, Central UP, and invited an immediate reaction from Mayawati and the BJP, which has been accusing Congress of devaluing crucial institutions such as the Election Commission, CBI and the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The Opposition saw Singh’s remarks as a vindication of its stand that CBI had become a mere tool in the hands of the principal ruling party to harass its political opponents.

Singh warned the BSP leadership against harassing state Congress leaders.

“I am challenging and warning the BSP leadership against victimising our party workers. Mayawati should not harass our party members as she has a CBI case pending against her and when we form the next government she will be in trouble,” he told the rally.

Singh’s remarks had his party colleagues scurrying for cover, but BSP and BJP pounced on them to corner Congress.

Mayawati, while addressing newspersons in Lucknow, spoke about how CBI was being used to threaten her. BJP, on the other hand, came out with a “we told you so” response.

Singh subsequently came out with a clarification.

“There is no question of any kind of threat. There have been a lot of complaints of Congress workers being harassed and falsely implicated in criminal cases in UP,” he said. (ANI)

Tripura witnesses dull campaigning on last day

Agartala, Apr. 21 (ANI): Elections for two Lok Sabha seats scheduled on April 23, Tripura witnessed a very dull last day of campaigning.

“This is the dullest election I have witnessed till date; the state Congress unit without any campaign or activities seems to have given a walkover to the Left”, said senior member Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) and a former Congress MLA Tapas Dey.

Tripura which is politically very active unlike earlier, this election missed street plays, poems, songs and colourful decorations as part of campaigning for the two Lok Sabha seats.

No star campaigner or any big rally was there in the state except one by CPIM general secretary Prakash Karat, who visited the state only for few hours.

“The TPCC has brought Pranab Mukharjee, as captain to attack Left, but unfortunately for only few street corners like and he returned back on the same day to Kolkata and the impact is our boys could not be motivated to come to the field’, said Dey.

The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) though managed few big rallies but stretched on people to people contact through local meeting and house to house campaign.

Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have organised poll campaigns using vehicles draped with colourfully party flags and festoons and putting few flags by the road side.

“Campaign here this time is very dull no doubt about that because Congress has not taken much of an initiative to launch and carry on good campaign for the election,” said Sekhar Datta, special correspondent, The Telegraph.

Tripura which had it assembly election only a year back in which Left had a sweep victory this time had had very less publication of books; leaflets besides letters to the electorate highlighting various issues are the other methods of campaign used by all political parties.

“In Tripura campaign had not pickup because the opposition is a divided house. Activist of the opposition seems to be not working for the victory of Congress candidate. It has become a one-sided game. Left or CPIM is a much organised party,” said Jayanta Bhattacharjee, political analyst.

Today at the end of the campaign there was a mammoth rally of the Left in capital Agartala and the enthusiasm of the party cadres with band party and songs was so high as if they were celebrating victory.

“Today at the end of campaigning it can be easily said that the campaign was only of out party i.e. of Left Front and the scene is same through out the state’, Samar Aidro, senior CPM leader.

Tripura is going for poll for its two Lok Sabha seats with 19 candidates, including a woman in the fray and over 2.08 million voters, including 1.01 million women, will exercise their franchise at 3,008 polling stations. With almost no campaign of opposition parties the result is expected to be sweep for the ruling CPI-M-led Left Front. By Pinaki Das (ANI)

Sonia’s cancels Bihar election rallies at last moment

Patna, Apr. 21 (ANI): UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s rallies in Bihar were cancelled at the eleventh hour on Tuesday, without citing any reason for the same.

“The information we have received from the AICC headquarters is that Soniaji’s rallies stand cancelled. No reason has been assigned,” said Samir Kumar Singh, Bihar Congress Working President.

The Congress President was scheduled to address rallies at Supaul and Samastipur to gather support for controversial MP Pappu Yadav’s wife Ranjeet Ranjan and state Congress Legislature Party leader Ashok Kumar respectively.

On Tuesday, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit addressed an election rally at Supaul and in Samastipur along with Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee. (ANI)

UPA does not belong to Congress alone: Lalu Prasad

Patna, Apr 20 (ANI): Retracting from his stand on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Tuesday said that United Progressive Alliance (UPA) does not necessarily belong to the Congress party and the coalition would meet after the completion of elections to decide their primeministerial candidate.

The Railway Minister had maintained all along that Manmohan Singh is the UPA nominee for the post of Prime Minister.

However, talking to reporters here, Lalu said that Singh as prime minister cannot be taken for granted and the candidate for the top post is still not fixed.

Lalu, whose RJD is an ally of the Congress party, had brokenanks with Congress, for the ensuing polls over the issue of seat sharing inihar.

Expressing confidence that the UPA would emerge victorious in these elections, Lalu Prasad said, “The UPA will form its government and there is no doubt about it. But, indeed, the people in the state Congress leadership misled Sonia Gandhi about their strength as a result of which the party fielded candidates in so many places against us.”

“These people will not be able to show their faces to the Congress president after the elections,” he said. (ANI)

Poll campaign picks up in Jammu

Jammu, April 11 (IANS) After a slow start, campaigning has gained momentum in the Jammu region where polling will be held in two seats in the first two phases of the five-phase 2009 general elections.

The Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have mobilised their star campaigners in Jammu and Kashmir, with the visiting leaders attracting good crowds.

‘We are very happy with the response of the people,’ Congress general secretary Prithviraj Chavan told reporters after addressing rallies where he promised 33 percent reservation to women in legislatures if Congress is voted back to power.

The party is now gearing itself for the big rallies to be addressed by party general secretary Rahul Gandhi. ‘We expect that the people would turn up in large numbers to listen to Rahul Gandhi and that would help us to a large extent,’ state Congress chief Saifuddin Soz said.

Even as Congress is waiting for Rahul, the party’s legislators, at times joined by leaders of its alliance partner, the National Conference, are going all over the Jammu region to campaign.

The BJP is depending mostly on street rallies, and well as personal contact with the voters.

‘The BJP has adopted a two-pronged strategy – one, we are holding rallies. Second, our cadres are visiting door to door,’ the party’s state unit chief Ajay Khajuria said.

The party is invoking the ‘sense of discrimination’ felt by Jammu region which has more population, more voters and more area, than the Kashmir Valley but still less political representation – two Lok Sabha seats as compared to three in the Valley and 37 Assembly seats against 46 in the Valley.

The PDP is concentrating on its strongholds – the Muslim belt of Rajouri and Poonch – where the party won two seats in the November-December 2008 assembly elections.

‘We can spring a surprise,’ PDP general secretary Daman Bhasin told IANS.

The PDP’s major campaign has been conducted by party patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who has been focussing on empowerment of all the regions and sub-regions of the state as part of the party’s agenda of self-rule.

Rahul to campaign in Jammu and Kashmir April 14

ammu, April 9 (IANS) Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi will visit Jammu and Kashmir early next week to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

Gandhi is expected to address the party’s two election meetings April 14, state Congress spokesperson Ravinder Sharma told reporters here Thursday.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will join Gandhi in the campaign.

The ruling Congress-National Conference alliance has fielded three candidates each for the six parliamentary seats in the state.

The Congress is contesting form Jammu, Udhampur and Leh seats going to polls on April 16, 23 and May 13 respectively.

The National Conference has fielded its candidates from Anantnag, Srinagar and Baramulla seats where polling will be held April 30, May 7 and 13 respectively.

146 candidates for first phase polls in West Bengal

Kolkata, April 9 (IANS) A total of 146 candidates filed their papers for 14 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, as nominations for the first phase of elections in the state closed Thursday.

BJP heavyweight Jaswant Singh, contesting from Darjeeling, was among the 26 candidates who entered the fray during the day.

Purulia has the maximum number of candidates, 16, followed by Darjeeling – 14.

Bidhnupur in Bankura has the least number of nominees – seven.

Among those trying their luck for the 14 seats are state Congress president Subrata Mukherjee from Bankura, Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi’s wife Deepa from Raiganj, and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader in the outgoing Lok Sabha Basudeb Acharya.

West Bengal will have three-phase polling, beginning April 30. The second phase May 7 will cover 17 constituencies, while the remaining 11 seats go to the hustings May 13.

Women candidates in Chhattisgarh put up tough fight

Raipur, April 8 (IANS) The five women candidates fielded by Chhattisgrah’s main parties – three by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and two by the Congress – are posing a stiff challenge to their male rivals for the Lok Sabha seats.

‘The five women candidates of the BJP and Congress fold have been giving sleepless nights to their rivals. I can’t say they are going to win easily but surely they have great chances,’ political analyst Vinod Singh told IANS.

The BJP has fielded its national vice-president and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece Karuna Shukla from Korba, Saroj Pandey from Durg and Kamla Patle from the state’s lone Scheduled Caste reserved seat Janjgir-Champa.

The Congress has pitted Renu Jogi, wife of former chief minister Ajit Jogi, against the BJP’s flamboyant leader and former union minister Dilip Singh Judeo from Bilaspur. It has fielded Phulo Devi Netam from the Scheduled Tribe reserved seat Kanker against the BJP’s sitting MP Sohan Potai.

‘I have been winning the Kanker seat since 1998 and am now aiming for the fourth straight victory, but this time the battle looks tougher than the past three times,’ said Potai.

‘For the first time, the women candidates of the two main parties are giving a tough fight to the rivals. I cannot say much about the BJP candidates’ chances but both the nominees of the Congress hold a clear edge over their rivals in Bilaspur and Kanker,’ said Congress general secretary Ramesh Varlyani.

BJP’s Shukla is locked in a straight battle with her old rival and state Congress working president Charandas Mahant, while Pandey faces a triangular contest with Congress’ Pradeep Choubey and sitting MP Tarachand Sahu, who was suspended from the BJP in January for anti-party activities.

‘No one can deny that I hold the edge but I never underestimate my rivals. The achievements of the state’s BJP government are helping me in a big way to convince voters,’ said Shukla.

‘The UPA government’s failure on terrorism and rising prices of essential commodities have been proving a boon for me. I hope to sail through easily,’ said Pandey.

The BJP leader’s rival admitted that she is putting up a formidable fight.

‘Its a tough contest for me this time,’ said Choubey.

‘The five women have a fair chance to make it to the Lok Sabha. They have an edge over their rivals for now but the last 48 hours before polling will decide a lot,’ said political analyst Anil Vibhakar.

Naveen Jindal faces action for election code violation

Kurukshetra, April 7 (IANS) The Haryana police Tuesday registered a case for violation of code of conduct against Congress MP and millionaire industrialist Naveen Jindal in this Haryana town following orders of the Election Commission.

Jindal has been booked under Section 3 of the Haryana Defacement of Public Property Act. He has been accused of unauthorisedly putting up pole hoardings on the Shahbad-Pipli road in this district.

Jindal is the sitting Congress MP from the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency and is seeking re-election.

The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) had complained to the poll panel against the illegal hoardings put up by Jindal as part of his campaign.

The case was registered by the police following a complaint by the assistant returning officer of the seat.

In a related development, the Haryana government Tuesday replaced controversial Deputy Commissioner of Panchkula (adjoining Chandigarh) R.K. Kataria following election related complaints.

Kataria, who is the son-in-law of Haryana state Congress president Phool Chand Mullana, was accused of favouring the ruling Congress in his jurisdiction.

Mullana’s hoarding was put up at the religious festival of Navratras at the famous Mata Mansa Devi shrine last week.

Kataria has been replaced by Pankaj Yadav, a Haryana government spokesman said here.

Was Nafisa hijacked by Amar from Congress fold?

Lucknow, April 5 (IANS) Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh ensured that actress-turned-social activist Nafisa Ali left the Congress and joined his party to contest from the Lucknow constituency, according to informed sources.

The question comes up after Nafisa Ali’s ‘secret’ visit to this Uttar pradesh capital 10 days ago, when she approached Maulana Khalid Rasheed, Lucknow’s naib imam and head of the 300-year-old seminary Darul-Uloom Firangi Mahal, Idgah, and another leading maulana of the city.

Nafisa Ali was here March 28 to assess whether she would get the blessings of Lucknow’s leading clerics, whose support could swing a large chunk of the city’s Muslim community. She was accompanied by a prominent Congress leader, who enjoys close proximity to the two maulanas.

The maulanas were told that the Congress was considering Nafisa Ali’s candidature, if the Samajwadi Party nominee, actor Sanjay Dutt, does not get the Supreme Court’s clearance to contest the Lok Sabha election due to his conviction in a criminal case.

On March 31, state Congress in-charge Digvijay Singh and state party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi too called on Maulana Khalid Rasheed for seeking the maulana’s support.

Sure enough, there was no talk of her being even remotely associated with the Samajwadi Party, whose general secretary Amar Singh seems to have hijacked her, in the same way as Sanjay Dutt was snatched away from the Congress about a month ago, according to informed sources.

While the Congress high command was dilly-dallying, Nafisa Ali was flown in here along with Sanjay Dutt Sunday afternoon.

They drove down straight from the airport to the state Samajwadi Party headquarters, where Amar Singh asked Sanjay Dutt to formally announce Nafisa Ali’s official candidature from here.

The idea was to put spotlight on Sanjay Dutt, who was last week named the party’s national general secretary after the denial of permission from the Supreme Court.

Amar Singh, in his press conference here, singled out the Congress leadership for allegedly being indifferent towards Nafisa Ali whose active role as a staunch Congress supporter had also got her a cabinet minister’s rank when she was appointed chairperson of the National Children’s Film Society.

On her part, Nafisa Ali, a former beauty queen, gave a long speech on how she was attracted to the ‘true secular credentials’ of the Samajwadi Party.

However, she was at her wit’s end when asked if the Congress was ‘less secular’ than the Samajwadi Party. ‘I do not mean that. I have always had full faith in (Congress chief) Sonia Gandhi’s secular credentials, but I got suspicious about some people in the party,’ she said after Amar Singh whispered something to her.

Sanjay Dutt added: ‘It was my wife Manyata who suggested the name of Nafisa Ali, and I am grateful to the Samajwadi Party leadership for accepting our proposal to field her. Nafisa is like a sister to me and I wish to assure her that I will remain behind her like a shadow in the entire election campaign.’

Nafisa Ali pointed out: ‘I have known Sanjay for 30 years and felt really pained that while someone like Jagdish Tytler could get a clean chit (in a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case), Sanjay Dutt could not even get permission to contest the polls.’
