Foreign fans could decide Tom Cruise’s “M:I-4″ fate

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Never in his decades of stardom has Tom Cruise been more delicately poised than he is right now.

Paramount is pulling together a fourth “Mission: Impossible.” There’s no question the studio intends to make another installment in the valuable franchise — even if some industry pundits speculate that it might replace the 48-year-old actor in the Ethan Hunt role.

The studio is monitoring the overseas performance of Cruise’s latest film, the 20th Century Fox domestic underachiever “Knight and Day,” to see whether the star retains his longtime hold over foreign audiences.

A former studio chief suggested that Paramount might not face any downside in recasting the role in “M:I-4,” at least not domestically. “‘Mission: Impossible’ is a brand,” he said. “It didn’t have anything to do with Tom Cruise in the beginning.”

For its part, Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said on Tuesday: “We absolutely are excited about having Tom Cruise star in this movie.”

Meanwhile, Cruise is actively looking at other possible roles. He attended a table read this week at the Saddle Ranch eatery in West Hollywood for a Sony project to be produced by Will Smith’s production company, Overbrook Entertainment. The film in question, “Paper Wings,” is set in an urban-cowboy world, and Saddle Ranch had the right ambience for the read because it features a mechanical bull.

Chances are that before he mounts a bull, Cruise will reprise his role in “Mission: Impossible 4.” But a disappointing start for “Knight and Day” has Hollywood wondering whether Cruise is still connecting with the American audience or whether the film’s timing and marketing campaign were to blame for its lackluster grosses.

Such questions are the backdrop for Paramount’s scrutiny of the foreign box office receipts overseas. “It all depends on whether Tom Cruise brings in foreign bucks,” said one executive not associated with the project.

“Knight and Day,” whose release was delayed in many countries until after the World Cup, will open in Australia, Brazil and Spain this weekend. The larger European markets and Japan are still ahead.

Paramount hopes to have a script for “M:I-4″ pulled together within weeks so that production can begin by the end of the year and the film could be in theaters for the 2011 holidays.

But Paramount wants to set a budget “more consistent with a first movie than a sequel,” per another source. The goal is to keep the cost at or below $140 million — significantly less than the 2006 third installment’s $165 million-plus. Obviously that means the studio is leaning heavily on Cruise to be flexible about his deal. Paramount is not offering any gross participation, and Cruise surely won’t be expecting anything like the $20 million upfront fee that he commanded when business was better for him and for Hollywood.

But for Cruise at this moment with this film, money is not the central issue. “Everybody will do their best to make it work,” said one of his representatives.

Alluding to the blowup when Sumner Redstone, the chairman of Paramount’s Viacom Inc parent, publicly savaged Cruise after “M:I-3,” the rep added, “No one wants a repeat of what happened last time.”

At this point, Cruise’s reps are determined to protect the star. Even before “Knight” turned in a disappointing domestic opening of slightly more than $20 million, a furious game of spin and counterspin was under way. In what clearly has been a strained relationship with the star’s representatives, Fox marched out marketing chief Tony Sela to take the blame for the film’s opening in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

That has not quelled a furious attack from Team Cruise, which blames Fox generally and co-chairman Tom Rothman in particular for the film’s soft domestic performance. The film has earned about $62 million to date, and should end up in the $75 million range.

“The correct story is, there’s something wrong with Tom, but it’s not Tom Cruise,” insisted one of Cruise’s representatives.

Team Cruise points out that the star pulled in better boxoffice for MGM’s “Valkyrie,” a film that should have been more challenging to market than a popcorn movie like “Knight and Day.” The 2008 war drama finished with $83 million in North America.

Cruise’s reps said Rothman engaged in micromanaging, leading to delays in responding to prerelease research indicating that the movie was not alluring to audiences. And they question a number of marketing decisions, including why the studio never updated a teaser poster that didn’t show the faces of Cruise and his co-star, Cameron Diaz.

The Cruise forces said the release date also was a mistake. They believe the film should have opened in late July. As it was, “Knight” was moved away from a July 2 release date that would have put it opposite the “Twilight” sequel “Eclipse.” The studio and the actor’s reps were worried that Cruise’s film would open far behind that behemoth and that Cruise (and Diaz) would be cast in unflattering contrast with the young vampires and werewolves. As it turned out, the film opened in third place, behind “Eclipse” and “Grown Ups.”

A Fox source said though the studio has acknowledged issues with the ad campaign, other criticisms amount to “Monday-morning quarterbacking.”

Brit boxing champ’s brother to fight for Pak, but heart still with Britain

London, May 13 (ANI): British boxing champion Amir Khan’s younger brother is all set to represent Pakistan at the 2010 Commonwealth Games at Delhi after claiming that he is being snubbed by Team Great Britain.

Haroon ‘Harry’ Khan, who won the junior ABA’s title last year in bantamweight category, said he would prefer to follow his older brother and wear a Great Britain vest when the Commonwealth Games are staged in New Delhi.

But so far the 19-year-old has been overlooked by the GB senior squad and is ready to take up Pakistan on their offer to join them.

“I really wanted to box for Britain at the Olympics ever since Amir won silver in Athens. I looked at what he did and dreamed of going one better, The Sun quoted Haroon, as saying.

“But I’ve never had a look-in with the senior England squad, not even a letter. What used to happen was they would call me up a week before an international and ask if I could box, but I knew it was only because someone had pulled out and they never really wanted me,” Haroon said.

“I’d have liked to have fought for Britain at the 2012 Olympics, but that isn’t going to happen. I’ve spoken to a lot of English boxers and they said if they were me, they would go for it.

“When I went over to Pakistan, they were offering me a house and a car and a driver, if I wanted to stay there,” Haroon said.

Amir Khan was launched to stardom when he won the silver medal at the Athens Olympic Games, losing to famed Cuban Mario Kindelan in the final.

Brother Haroon wants to perform at the Commonwealth Games, but insists that he won’t represent another country at the 2012 Olympics in London.

“Whatever happens, I couldn’t see myself fighting for Pakistan at the 2012 Olympics in London. That just wouldn’t feel right. If all goes well, I will turn pro after the Commonwealth Games,” he said. (ANI)

John and Gerry told the mag that the family is increasingly being “frozen out” of the church volunteer””s life.

The brothers also commented over the sudden cancellation of Susan””s concert in Australia and reports of her supposedly bizarre behaviour.

LiLo ”leading a messy life in an unclean home”

Washington, April 29 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan is leading a messy life in an unclean home with “spilled coffee and drinks around the rooms, and stuff all over, clothes everywhere,” it has emerged.

Just a few years ago, the Mean Girls star was one of the hottest things to have happened to Hollywood.

However, all the stardom seems to have drained out of her life and Lindsay doesn”t even have work now.

But even now the starlet, 23, has not come back to her senses and living a shabby life is almost becoming a habit with her.

“Lindsay has been living in a major mess lately. Whether she”s in her home or a hotel room, she does not pick up after herself or take care of things,” Fox News quoted a source close to Lohan, as saying.

The insider added: “She sleeps on a mattress on the floor, there”s spilled coffee and drinks around the rooms, and stuff all over, clothes everywhere. It is not a clean home environment. She sleeps most days and it is difficult to wake her up.”

Mum Dina seems to believe making Lindsay”s sis Ali, 16, stay with her can solve her elder daughters problems.

The informer said: “Ali lives with Lindsay. I think [their mother] Dina believes that it will help Lindsay to have Ali around.

“Ali is also in L.A. for work and is hoping to land something soon as an actress. It”s a stretch to think that Lindsay should be responsible for Ali. Lindsay has enough trouble taking care of herself.”

However, matters have only worsened for Lindsay.

She recently lost out on a role in the flick “The Other Side,” after Katie Holmes backed out.

The snitch said: “Lindsay was cut from the movie for multiple reasons.

“It”s an independent film and the budget with the insurance coverage would have skyrocketed. Drug testing would have been a part of the insurance process as well.” (ANI)

Leonardo DiCaprio ‘helping Kate Winslet deal with split’

London, March 17 (ANI): Leonardo DiCaprio is helping pal Kate Winslet deal with her marriage breakdown, it has emerged.

DiCaprio and Winslet rose to fame playing lovers in ‘Titanic’ and were reunited on screen two years ago in ‘Revolutionary Road’ – directed by her husband Sam Mendes.

It has been claimed that the actress’ relationship with Mendes, 44, suffered on set and eventually led to their break-up.

The couple separated several months ago and made the split official on Monday.

However, DiCaprio has become a shoulder to cry on as cracks appeared in her six-year marriage.

“Leo and Kate have been like brother and sister since they starred in Titanic together,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“And since Kate”s marriage started to go south, around the time they were filming Revolutionary Road, they”ve got closer again.

“Kate has always really adored Leo and feels like she can tell him anything.

“They were so young when Titanic came out, so it”s fair to say they basically grew up together, professionally at least.

“They were thrust into stardom together and were the only people who knew what the other was going through. He”s been a rock for her,” the source added. (ANI)

Ashes 2009, a series too close to call, says Roebuck

Sydney, July 4 (ANI): This year’s Ashes series between Australia and England promises to be a ripper because the two sides possess both experience and freshness to deliver what is asked of them, feels noted cricket columnist Peter Roebuck.

According to Roebuck, the general verdict is that the series is too close to call.

“As a rule, the urn changes hands only after the challengers discover a few great cricketers and get up a head of steam, or the holders implode by way of poor captaincy, breakaway tours or low morale. None of these factors is completely in place so the likeliest outcome is for the Australians to retain the Ashes after a tight, though not titanic, tussle,” feels Roebuck.

“While both sides have strengths and weaknesses that could be identified from Pluto. England have superior swing bowlers and spinners, Australia have a potent new-ball pair and a powerful batting line-up, all the more reason to predict a 2-2 draw,” he adds.

Under the African stewardship of Andy Flower and Strauss, which swears by steadiness, focus, resolve and a scorn of ego, besides avoiding distractions, eschewing excuses, spurning stardom, condemning complaint, a combative and pragmatic England team is being forged.

Roebuck believes that both Strauss and Flower are the right men for the right jobs, having the required experience and maturity to convert England into a competitive unit on the field.

“Strauss and his think tank have also dared to pack their side with bowlers. Avoiding the sort of half-cricketers favoured by cautious types, they chosen five batsmen and relied on them and lusty lower-order men such as Stuart Broad to muster the required runs. It worked. The bowling is led by James Anderson, Broad, Swann, Flintoff, Onions and perhaps Ryan Sidebottom.”

Australia, Roebuck says have more headaches than England but are also a slightly stronger side.

He believes the form of Captain Ponting and his deputy Clarke will be important. (ANI)

Malay-Indian actress on fast-track to stardom

Kuala Lumpur, June 29 (ANI): Malay-Tamil actress Shantini Theva used to be a Tamil film fan, but today, she is part of the glitzy industry herself-she is playing one of the main female leads in big budget flick ‘Nadodigal’.

Hailing from Banting, Selangor, Shantini has many more offers pouring in, which could soon see her join the ranks of famed Tamil film stars like Jothika, Simran and Sneha.

“It is a very surreal feeling but I am glad to have been given a chance to be part of India’s industrious cine world,” Star Online quoted Shantini as saying.

And she is certainly headed towards superstardom, for her co-star in the movie is Sasi- kumar, who is currently the talk of the movie world in Madras due to his sterling performance in the box office hit ‘Subramaniapuram’.

Shantini has said that working with the all-Indian crew members was also a valuable experience for her as it gave her an insight on the work culture there.

“All the cast and crew were efficient and dedicated and it was also a big thrill to work with director P. Samuthirakkani,” she said.

Shantini received the offer to act in ‘Nadodigal’ from Samuthirakkani after she played the role of a private investigator in about 25 episodes of Tamil soap opera ‘Arasi’.

“He asked me if I would like to star in his movie and I accepted without a second thought,” said the eldest of five siblings.

Shantini said that she would soon be back in India to act in a Telegu as well as a Tamil movie.

She revealed that she received the offers while she was shooting Nadodigal.

Shantini said that many filmmakers had also asked her to apply for permanent residence status in India as they foresaw a long career ahead for her there.

“I have taken their advice and am currently in the process of applying to be an Indian permanent resident,” said Shantini. (ANI)

‘I’m no alcoholic, says Symonds

Brisbane (Australia), June 29 (ANI): Sacked Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds has denied that he is an alcoholic, but admitted to being a binge drinker.

In an interview on Nine Network’s Sixty Minutes last night, Symonds said: “I am not an alcoholic, I have been diagnosed as a binge drinker. I go out and drink hard all in one hit. Too fast, too much.

Everyone’s tolerance is different. I became not good to be around.

“I have let them (team-mates) down a number of times. I had to front up and apologise to them a number of times. They were embarrassing, difficult awkward situations. It is not ideal. I am not saying I am perfect but I am not setting out looking for trouble,” news.com.au quoted Symonds, as saying.

“I am not proud of the times I have drunk too much or been rude to people or broken team rules – it’s unacceptable. I am out of that environment and that won’t happen any more for those people,” he added.

Symonds wayward disciplinary record saw him sent home from the Twenty20 World Cup in England. Cricket Australia subsequently withdrew a new contract and Symonds international career is now considered over.

Symonds confirmed he had several drinks while watching the first State of Origin match while in England and thus broke the contract.

Symonds admitted the pressure of stardom thrust upon him in recent seasons and the stresses of a race row in which he was taunted by Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh had worn him down. (ANI)

Distraught Susan Boyle shifted to ‘safe house’

London, May 30 (ANI): Susan Boyle has reportedly been shifted to a safe house as she prepares to perform in the Britain’s Got Talent finals.

Judge Piers Morgan revealed the Scottish church singer, 48, had thought of packing her bags and quitting the talent show following excessive media criticism.

Morgan said the singing sensation had become “distraught” and was presently spending time with one of her closest friends to beat the pressure.

“She had a rocky moment a couple of days ago when she woke up and saw some very negative headlines and suddenly felt the pressure of world attention,” The BBC quoted Morgan as saying on Radio 5 Live’s Victoria Derbyshire show.

“You have to remember this is someone who has gone from complete anonymity to global stardom in the space of six weeks.

“It’s understandable. People should give her a bit of slack. She’s 24 hours from the biggest day of her life and she’s starting to feel the heat,” he added.

Morgan also revealed that Susan, who shot to overnight stardom with her jaw-dropping performance of the Les Miserables song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ on the show, had been struggling to cope with the pressure.

He added: “She is very distraught, to the extent where she packed her bags and was going to leave the show. She just didn’t see the point of continuing if every time she picked up the newspapers there was another avalanche of abuse.” (ANI)

‘Made-over’ Susan Boyle ‘still’ a virgin

London, May 23 (ANI): Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle is still a virgin despite having a makeover, it has emerged.

The 48-year-old, who turned into an overnight celebrity with her jaw-dropping performance of the Les Miserables song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ on the talent show, had claimed she had never been with a man and had “never been kissed”.

And despite having groomed herself by ditching her bushy eyebrows and colouring her hair since her rise to stardom, the church volunteer from Scotland is yet to score in her love life, say sources.

“She hasn’t had time to meet a man. She’s had the world camped out on her doorstep and she’s been practising hard,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“She is determined to show she’s more than a 90-second audition and a YouTube clip. She’ll have plenty of time for men after the show ends,” the source added.

Judge Piers Morgan recently joked he would be happy to break Susan’s ‘kissing duck’ when she turns up for the forthcoming semi-finals. (ANI)

I was inspired by Tendulkar knock: Pandey

Centurion, May 22 (IANS) Indian Premier League’s new star Manish Pandey said his role model Sachin Tendulkar’s knock in the first match against Delhi Daredevils gave him the confidence to make the most of the opportunity to open the innings against Deccan Chargers.

Pandey scored 114 against Deccan Chargers to propel Royal Challengers to a 12-run victory Thursday that helped them finish third in the IPL standings. It was also first century by any Indian player in IPL.

Pandey said he drew inspiration from Tendulkar’s 46 against Daredevils.

“When I saw Tendulkar batting I somehow felt that I can also do it on this track. I am a great admirer of Tendulkar,” he said.

Pandey also said it was the backing of the captain Anil Kumble and coach Ray Jennings that gave him the confidence to open the innings.

“In the team meeting he (Kumble) told me that I would open the innings. He said he has faith in me and told me to back my abilities. He said the track looked good and no matter how badly I played I would still score good runs,” Pandey was quoted as saying in the IPL website.

“He (Ray Jennings) is a fantastic coach. He told me to play my natural game. He told me not to fear failure and to have fun in the centre.”

Before his rise to IPL stardom, Pandey played three matches for the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural IPL. He batted twice, and scored just three of his runs in one of those innings. This year, he added two runs to that tally in the couple of games he played.

“It is amazing. I just thought I would back myself and it worked. I realised only when I reached 87 that I could make a century here. I wanted to grab the opportunity with both the hands. I am happy to match A.B. de Villiers’ feat of scoring a century in the IPL in South Africa.”

“I told myself that I would play a ball on merit. Once I got my timing and swing of the bat right, I knew I could bat through the innings.”

Pandey, who represented India in the U-19 World Cup in 2008, wanted to join the Army but now he wants to continue playing cricket.

“I think the plan has changed now. I just had an option that if cricket would not work for me then I would join the Army.”

Asked whether he got frustrated while warming the benches, Pandey said: “It is part of the game. Sometime you get a chance and sometimes you don’t. I got my chance and I did well.”

London, May 16 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama might be a style icon for the whole wide world, but Iman, one of the first black supermodels, begs to differ.

The 53-year-old catwalk queen insists that the First Lady is not a “great beauty” but will “get better with age.”

“Mrs Obama is not a great beauty. But she is so interesting looking and so bright. That will always take you farther,” the Telegraph quoted her as telling Parade magazine.

She said that her own rise to stardom did not free her from racism.

“You suddenly represent a whole race, and that race goes, ‘Well, that person does not represent our ideals of beauty’. For lack of a better term, it becomes what it was like during slavery,” she said.

“One had the field nigger and the house nigger. There was this notion that I was chosen by white fashion editors to be better than the rest, which I am not.

“I did not like being thought of as the house nigger,” she added. (ANI)
