Australian caves offer new tour — in Klingon

(Reuters Life!) – Staff at the Jenolan Caves west of Sydney have added a new out-of-this-world attraction — a tour in the Star Trek language Klingon.

Currently a self-guided audio tour at the caves in the Blue Mountains is offered in eight languages, but staff came up with the idea of adding the fictional language Klingon as the caves did once feature in the popular TV series.

“In the Star Trek universe, Jenolan Caves was first immortalized in the Next Generation episode ‘Relics,’ through the naming of a ‘Sydney Class’ Starship – the USS Jenolan,” the Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust said in a statement.

“Now, this relationship will be developed further, when Jenolan Caves adds the language of Star Trek’s great warrior race to a tour of their most popular cave.”

The Jenolan cave system, located about 175 km (109 miles) west of Sydney, is enormous with over 40 km (25 miles) of passages and incorporating caves, underground rivers and natural archways.

The Klingon tour has been set up for the Nettle Cave, which attracts up to 200,000 visitors a year, and will start on August 22.

Jenolan Caves guide Gordon Mills said Klingon language experts Michael Roney Jr and Tracy Canfield earlier this month flew in from the United States to record the audio tour.

“We wanted to do something a bit obscure and we will now be the first tourist attraction on this planet at least to have a Klingon tour,” Mills, a self-described Star Trek enthusiast, told Reuters.

“There is a fantasy side to caves and a timeless nature, rather like Star Trek, so we thought this was fitting.”

Simon Pegg eyes return as lab geek for “M:I-4″

LOS ANGELELS (Hollywood Reporter) – Simon Pegg is being brought back into the Impossible Missions Force fold.

The actor is in negotiations to reprise his character of lab geek Benji Dunn for Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible 4.”

While not officially greenlighted, the movie is tracking for an early September start, and director Brad Bird has been reading actors this week. Tom Cruise is returning as agent Ethan Hunt in a plot whose details are being kept under a lid of secrecy. The move also would reunite Pegg with producer J.J. Abrams, who not only directed the third installment but also directed the actor in the rebooted “Star Trek,” in which Pegg portrayed Starship engineer Scotty.

Pegg will be at Comic-Con in San Diego this week to showcase “Paul,” a comedy about two geeks who encounter an alien while traveling across the U.S. to a comic convention.

Lose the brush, get a gun

Mumbai, June 6 — Last week, tucked away inside Wind Chimes play school on Hill Road, Bandra, models were having make-up blown on to their faces by make-up artists using pen-sized metal guns. Rather than applying foundation with conventional brushes, the artists were blowing foundation on to the models’ faces.

Started by Virginia Holmes and Natasha Nischol, Fat Mu, the same make-up consultants that worked on Slumdog Millionaire, held the workshop to introduce airbrushing to the city. Jillian Lagasse, an American make-up artist based in London, had been brought over by Fat Mu to train the Indian make-up artists in the latest Hollywood trend wherein make-up is sprayed onto the face with an instrument called an airbrush.

“Airbrushing is mandatory in the UK since all the channels have gone to High Definition (HD). HD shows wrinkles and blemishes more clearly,” Lagasse says.

This technique is said to create flawless looks, suited to HD films. Make-up airbrushing evolved from painting cars, furniture and spray-painting, thanks to its pioneer, American Dina Ousley.

“It wasn’t originally meant for make-up and then someone thought it could be used to camouflage pigmentation and it took off from there,” Holmes says. Apart from covering up pigmentation and scars, the foundation can be applied in one-tenth the time needed for conventional application.

It sets on contact, leaving a flawless appearance, suited for online photo albums and weddings. It’s also used for special effects, especially bruises, Holmes says.

“We used it to create Amitabh Bachchan’s look in Paa. And it was used for Star Trek.

But I don’t think A-list Bollywood stars are using it yet, even though it is used in Hollywood and at Cannes,” she adds. It is hygienic as there is no need to touch the face.

And the make-up sits on the skin like a veil and does not seep into the pores. Small bottles of make-up have to be bought to go with the guns, but it is cost-effective as only a few drops are needed for the whole face, Holmes says.

It is recommended mainly for applying foundation, blusher and highlighting the brows, but must not be used for eyeliner. Fat Mu is holding workshops, inviting experts from all over the world to train Indian make-up artistes in the latest beauty techniques.

They recently had an expert who taught artistes how to recreate periodic hairstyles such as Victorian wigs. “We want people to keep up-to-date with the latest trends and what is happening around the world,” explains Holmes.

Why airbrush? The speed of application and flawless finish make it ideal for the film world. In roughly 45 seconds, you can airbrush a full face with foundation, blusher and highlights.

It creates a flawless look and only eight to 10 drops of foundation are needed for a full face of makeup, making it economical. It is water and sweat-resistant and lasts for 12 hours, making it ideal for humid conditions, harsh studio and film lights, and weddings It is hygienic as airbrushing never touches the skin and so is suited to acne-prone skin.

Gordon Brown ‘snubs’ Sir Patrick Stewart’s tips

London, May 6 (ANI): Star Trek actor Sir Patrick Stewart offered his services to Gordon Brown – but the UK Prime Minister was not interested in learning the presentational tips for the televised leaders” debates.

There were no takers for a play with a “vote Labour” message that Sir Patrick wanted to put on in the run-up to the election. But the actor still offered his services to Brown.

However, Brown did not help himself with the presentational tips that Sir Patrick could have given him for the televised debates, reports The Telegraph.

“I would have certainly made myself available, if asked,” the 69-year-old said.

“I did in 2000 have a conversation with Al Gore about a certain aspect of the style of presentation. He was kind enough to say last year that if he had paid more attention to the tips that I was giving him, he might have been president,” he added. (ANI)

How the net has made William Shatner richer by $600M

New York, May 04 (ANI): ‘Star Trek’ star William Shatner, who asked for stocks instead of cash when he became pitchman for the Internet travel company Priceline.com in 1997, has made a startling 600 million dollars – thanks to his early decision.

According to The Toronto Sun, Priceline’s shares are currently trading close to 300-dollar apiece. And although the company won’t disclose how many shares Shatner receives, it’s reported to be plenty.

A decade ago during the dot.com bust, the stock was selling for less than 2-dollar a share, reports The New York Post.

It was around the same time Shatner got into the commercials. (ANI)

The items will be up for grabs in June.

The Las Vegas auction would feature numerous items that were once used by Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek.

“My father would be proud that his memorabilia will not only be enjoyed and cherished by Star Trek fans, but that the proceeds will benefit society on a larger scale,” the New York Daily News quoted Roddenberry’s son, Rod Roddenberry, as saying.

Among the articles going under the hammer are costumes worn by actress Majel Barrett Roddenberry during Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a Peabody award for The Big Good-bye, an episode from The Next Generation, as well as a script with notes scribbled on it by Roddenberry.

Leonard Nimoy won’t reprise Spock role in next Star Trek movie

New York, April 21 (ANI): American actor Leonard Nimoy has revealed that he will not be reprising his role as Spock Prime in the next Star Trek movie.

According to IGN, Nimoy, 79, announced his retirement from acting in an interview with the Toronto Sun, after recently wrapping his role on “Fringe”.

“I want to get off the stage. Also, I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto,” the New York Post quoted Nimoy as saying of his successor in the role of the USS Enterprise’s Vulcan first officer.

“He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue,” he added.

Nimoy added that his retirement also means he’ll be curtailing his public appearances at conventions and fan events. (ANI)

YouTube takes down Hitler ‘Downfall’ parody videos

New York, Apr 21 (ANI): YouTube has removed many of the Hitler ‘Downfall’ parody videos in the wake of complaints by the German production company that owns the right to the 2004 film.

According to the Open Video Alliance, Constantin films, owners of the rights to the film ‘Der Untergang’ (‘Downfall’), upon which the parody videos are based, filed the copyright claim.

All the parodies, which have become quite popular on Internet, focus on a single scene from the movie when Hitler screams at his generals upon learning that Germany is about to lose the war.

As the character playing Hitler lashes out in German, the subtitles in English from the original movie are replaced to indicate a completely different reason for the Fuhrer’s rage.

However, it is unclear how many parodies have been taken down and how many remain on YouTube.

But many of them could still be seen Tuesday, including ‘Hitler reacts to new Star Trek movie 4’, ‘Hitler is informed and rants about the Apple iPad’, and ‘Hitler finds out Tony Romo dumped Jessica Simpson’.

One of the videos, which were taken down, included ‘Hitler Gets Banned from XBox Live’ with a view-count of over 4 million.

“There are hundreds of Hitler Downfall videos, and it is unclear what will become of them. The burden of filing a counternotice or a claim of fair use to restore the video falls on individual users, so it will be difficult to reverse this action,” the New York Post quoted Open Video Alliance as saying on its website. Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Shutter Island’ release postponed

Washington, Aug 24 (ANI): The release of Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio’s new film has been postponed to next year following credit crisis.

The film was to hit theatres in October 09 however, Paramount Pictures have now pushed it forward to February next year (10).

Star Trek’s Mr Spock was designed to be a sex symbol

London, July 15 (ANI): The legendary character of Mr Spock in ‘Star Trek’ was originally conceptualised to become a sex symbol, revealed a newly-discovered letter from the cult TV show’s creator.

In the letter, Gene Roddenberry, who died aged 70 in 1991, wrote that he gave the pointy-eared Vulcan a “look of the devil”.

And he believed that his looks would be “particularly provocative to women”, reports The Sun.

In the sci-fi series, Leonard Nimoy played Spock, who had the catchphrase “to boldly go where no man has gone before”.

But it was William Shatner’s character Captain James T Kirk that went on to become the male sex symbol.

Roddenberry refers to Spock as “Spoke” in the 1973 letter.

And according to estimates, the letter could fetch 1,200 pounds at auction on Saturday in London. (ANI)

Drew Barrymore joins gay activists’ rally

London, May 28 (ANI): Actress Drew Barrymore along with Emmy Rossum and other celebrities rallied on the streets of Hollywood to protest against the new California ban on gay marriage.

The celebrities joined thousands of activists to protest about the re-instatement of Propsal 8, which bans same-sex marriages after they were legalised briefly last year.

Star Trek actor George Takei, Kelly Osbourne, Sophia Bush, comedienne Kathy Griffin and singer/actress Deborah Gibson are among other celebrities who have criticised California’s approval of the ban.

“I was raised a good Catholic girl and nowhere in church do I remember it ever being an issue for everybody to be treated equally. I can’t believe it’s 2009 and this is still an issue,” the Daily Express quoted Gibson as saying.

Osbourne added, “It goes without saying that if you love someone, you should be able to marry them no matter.” (ANI)

Ellen DeGeneres, George Takei to remain married despite gay marriage ban

Washington, May 27 (ANI): American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and actor George Takei’s same sex marriages will remain legal despite the new ruling to uphold the ban on gay weddings in California.

The California Supreme Court has revealed that those gay couples who exchanged vows between May and November last year will be considered married, reports Contactmusic.

The ban came into effect late last year (08) – six months after gay marriages were declared legal in May (08).

DeGeneres wed girlfriend Portia De Rossi and Star Trek actor Takei exchanged vows with longtime partner Brad Altman during the legal window on same sex marriages.

Responding to the latest development, DeGeneres, said “One day, when everyone is treated with full equality, we’ll look back and realise how wrong this was.” (ANI)

Star Trek-like scanners may soon be healing wounds with light

Washington, May 27 (ANI): If you thought that Star Trek scanners that fix injuries with beams of light was just a piece of fiction, just be ready for this-scientists have developed a new optical technology that could lead to better artificial tissues and wounds that heal faster with less scarring.

The new technology lines up living cells and controls their movements to effectively heal the wounds faster.

Scientists have long used the energy in laser light to drill microscopic holes or as tweezers or traps to direct and manoeuvre small pieces of matter.

However, guiding entire cells has proven difficult because the lasers used for manipulation tend to damage the structural units of living organisms.

But now, Aristide Dogariu and colleagues at the University of Central Florida in Orlando have developed an optical procedure that does not harm cells, but affects their skeletons – an ensemble of slender rods made out of an abundant protein called actin.

The actin rods are constantly growing and shrinking inside of cells, but the direction in which they grow changes the cell’s membrane shape and dictates where the cell moves.

The researchers used the polarization of optical waves to create a field around the cells in which the growing actin rods line up like a compass in the Earth’s magnetic field.

It is possible to use the optical fields to direct large groups of cells to line up and move in the same direction.

The technique could be useful for cancer assays, which test the motility of cells, or as a non-invasive, non-toxic boost for regenerative medicine.

The findings were presented at the 2009 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/International Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO/IQEC) at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore. (ANI)

William Shatner to turn ‘Raw Nerve’ interviewer

Sydney, May 25 (ANI): After playing the iconic character of captain James T Kirk in the Star Trek series, William Shatner is coming back on TV, but in a new role-a talk show host.

The legendary actor is doing a new TV talk show, called ‘Raw Nerve’, in which he will “attempt to probe his guest’s most sensitive subjects and touch upon a Raw Nerve,” says the show’s publicity blurb.

The show comes after Shatner’s alleged showdown with JJ Abrams, the director of the new Star Trek film.

Apparently, Abrams had snubbed Shatner by casting the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, in the blockbuster.

However, the 78-year-old actor is nothing but warm with his words about Abrams and the new Star Trek movie.

“No, I haven’t seen the movie yet,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Shatner as saying during a telephonic interview.

He added: “I’m looking forward to it. I hear it is wonderful and it has received some wonderful reviews.”

Shatner is also open to inviting Abrams on ‘Raw Nerve’, but he won’t be using his talk show to attack Abrams and would rather take the friendly route.

When asked if he would invite Abrams to be a guest on the talk show, Shatner said: “I would love to. That, in itself, is a great suggestion. Everybody that we think of has to be okayed by the network and so I am going to take that name right now when we close up the phone and suggest it, because I think he’d (Abrams) jump at it.” (ANI)

Star Trek fan transforms his flat into space ship

London, May 18 (ANI): A Brit man is so obsessed with ‘Star Trek’ that he has transformed his entire flat into a replica of the starship shown in the popular television series.

It took Tony Alleyne eight years to turn his one bedroom studio apartment into the deck of the Starship Enterprise.

It all started as a therapeutic hobby for the 56-year-old devotee, following a painful divorce from his wife, and now he has decked the whole property as the Star Trek Voyager.he intricacies of Alleyne’s work could be seen in the life-size copy of the space ship’s command console, which forms the centrepiece of the one-bed flat and even controls the lights and sound effects.

Every morning, a voice-activated computer system turns on fluorescent tubes that illuminate bleeping panels and a replica of the “beam me up” transporter.

The windows of his home in Hinckley, Leicestershire, have been fitted with plexi-glass in-between layers of wood – creating dark space portals.

In fact, the doorbell has been customised to play a sample of Patrick Stewart as captain Jean-Luc Picard.

“Building this has been like a dream. I had a vision and I am really amazed at what I have managed to achieve with just hard work,” the Telegraph quoted Alleyne as saying.

He added: “It all started as therapy after I split with my wife – building every bit from scratch really helped me to deal with the stress of it all. I first started with the Transport Control Console, that took around two years to build- but it looks exactly like the one in the TV series. At the moment it controls all the lighting and sound effects and is one delicate piece of machinery, though it’s very durable on the outside.”

Alleyne, an interior designer by profession, said that he first got the idea to dedicate his flat to the sci-fi series when a friend gave him a Star Trek magazine.

Originally, he designed it as a replica of the USS Enterprise from the 1979 film ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’, but later went on to give it a more futuristic look.

“My friend gave me a Star Trek mag and I became obsessed with having my own space ship. He laughed when I told him – I think he thought it was all a joke, but I knew I was going to achieve it one day,” Alleyne said.

“My whole life over the last few years has gone into this, I have given up absolutely everything. Some people might think I’m a bit of a sad individual but I’m not. I’m just really into Star Trek – it’s really my only vice in life.

“I always wanted to live somewhere like this – for me it is utopia,” he added.

The impressive spectacle in Alleyne’s flat has been made on a shoestring budget of around 4,000 pounds after splitting from his wife Georgina, 50, who still owns the flat. (ANI)
