Mystery of the unknown victim

New Delhi, June 6 — Three days after the speeding car of a politician’s son rammed a taxi in South Delhi, the identity of the 28-year-old woman passenger killed in the incident remains a mystery. The police claim they have contacted individuals whose phone numbers were recovered from the victim’s phone but, curiously, “all of them have expressed ignorance about her identity”. Mystery also shrouds the whereabouts of the injured taxi driver, Naresh Kumar Kapoor (33), who was taken to AIIMS for treatment before he went untraceable. The taxi is registered with an authorised stand within the premises of The Lalit, a 5-star hotel, in Central Delhi. A senior police officer, strictly on the condition of anonymity, said, “He is in a state of shock and his version of the incident is yet to be recorded.” However, when asked whether the police knew where he was, the officer replied in the negative. The driver of the two-seater Mercedes Benz convertible, 26-year-old Dinesh Singh Tanwar, walked away scot-free by furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000 just hours after the incident that took place at 3.35 am in Africa Avenue Marg. Dinesh is the son of Kanwar Singh Tanwar, the second richest candidate in Delhi to contest the 2008 Assembly polls on a BSP ticket, who later joined the Congress.

On speculations that the unidentified female belonged to an escort service, the DCP said, “We are investigating the case from all angles and these speculations are not relevant.”

Fire doused on German ship; passengers, crew safe

Oslo, May 29 (DPA) A fire that forced the evacuation of the passengers and crew from the German cruise ship Deutschland in western Norweigian waters was extinguished late Friday, hours after the blaze broke out in an engine room, Norwegian officials said.

The Norwegian news agency NTB said that 607 people – all passengers and most of the crew – were evacuated in the harbour of Eidfjord, some 200 km north-west of Oslo.

Those evacuated included 364 passengers, who were mostly German, 241 crew members and two Norwegian pilots who were on board when the fire started.

‘So far there are no reports of injuries,’ Per Fjeld, spokesman for the rescue headquarters, told the German Press Agency dpa.

The evacuation of the passengers and crew from the ship to land had been carried out in orderly fashion, he said.

The passengers are to be flown home Monday.

The fire broke out 12.30 p.m. (1030 GMT), with the cause not yet determined. Officials said that the vessel’s fire-proof doors had all held, preventing the blaze from spreading throughout the vessel.

Specialised marine firefighters were called in from Norway’s second-largest city, Bergen, helping to bring the blaze under control.

The 175-metre-long Deutschland – dubbed a ‘floating 5-star hotel’ – is the flagship of the northern German shipping firm Deilmann. It was being towed overnight Sunday to Bergan for further inspection of the damage.

The Deutschland had been due to depart Eidfjord on Sunday evening for Hamburg. It was scheduled to leave Tuesday from Hamburg on a cruise to London and Scotland.

At home in Dubai, Sania trains with Malik for Big W

Sania Mirza is finding Dubai to be a home away from home. The other day she was training on the courts of an academy housed in a star hotel in the UAE metropolis when the temperature touched 41 degrees Celsius at 9.30 in the morning. By afternoon she got to hear that it was 45 degrees in Hyderabad. Just like at home, a few heads — mainly from Pakistanis and Indians — turn in her direction as she begins sparring with her hitting partner, Zeeshan Ali, the former India player.

“The last three weeks have been good with regard to training,” Sania told The Indian Express on Wednesday, while talking about her injured wrist that has kept her out of action since February. “My wrist has bothered me for the last two years. It is a chronic wrist injury but at the moment it is not hurting. I have been training in Dubai for the past nine days and it feels good,” Sania said.

Sania and her husband, Pakistan batsman, Shoaib Malik are busy setting up their house in Dubai. The couple whose marriage attracted controversy are now happy that the hullabaloo surrounding them has died down. Dubai is a neutral venue for both of them.

“Whatever happened just before our wedding was disturbing and difficult for both of us and for the families. When it was all over, I said to Shoaib ‘we have come through this. I think we can come through more things in my life rather easily now’. We both faced what people never face in their lives probably. We were not even married when all the controversy happened. It is great to be together. After all that happened, we are both back to being happy again and that really counts.”

Sania believes not much has changed since the wedding. “I have to get used to sharing my bathroom and bedroom,” she said jokingly. “Shoaib and I have been working out together. We play sports in which we have to be lean but also strong. It helps that we are from sporting backgrounds,” Sania added.

“Just yesterday, when we were watching a movie, we were telling each other that we can’t believe we are married. One good thing is that we never fight over watching soap operas or serial. I am not the ‘girly’ types so I watch sport and so does he.”

Good news came in the form of Malik’s name being in the probables list for the Asia Cup. The former Pakistan skipper is undergoing a one-year ban for ‘indiscipline’. “I have heard that things can change overnight in Pakistan cricket. I never used to follow Pakistan cricket earlier but now I do. Shoaib didn’t follow too much of women’s tennis but now he has no choice.”

Sania will kick-start her return with the event in Birmingham before heading to Wimbledon. “I didn’t take time off because I was getting married. I got married because I had time on my side due to my wrist injury. Somehow, people don’t understand that. Everyone goes through rough patches and Shoaib himself has had a roller-coaster year. He understands what it means to make a comeback after an injury.

“Grass is the most difficult surface to make a comeback, especially after a wrist injury, as the surface is uneven and one has to make lot of adjustments with the wrist. If I had a choice I would have made a comeback on a hard court. But that said I have played well on grass.”

Ranked 91 in singles and 75 in doubles, Sania knows that she’ll realise how match fit she is only after playing a couple of games. “I am not going in hoping to make the quarterfinal of Wimbledon. It is not going to be that easy. It doesn’t work like that. I want to get on court and play a few matches. And then we will see.”

Live cartridges found in Radisson; 3 Italians detained

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) Three Italian nationals were detained Thursday after 24 live cartridges were recovered from their room in south Delhi’s Radisson hotel, police said.

The housekeeping staff of the five-star hotel found the cartridges while cleaning room number 448 Thursday morning. The foreigners had vacated the room Tuesday, a police officer said.

‘The Italian nationals checked in the room Tuesday morning and vacated the room the same day. One of them was detained in Mumbai while the other two where caught in Pune,’ the officer added.

Security has been beefed up at the hotel, located close to the Indira Gandhi international airport.

In February, two British nationals were caught from the same hotel while they were involved in plane spotting. They were later granted bail and let off.

Dubai – where public kissing is a taboo, but prostitution flourishes

London, May 16 (ANI): Dubai”s Islamic austerity is nothing but a sham. Couples who publicly kiss are jailed, however the state turns a blind eye to 30,000 imported prostitutes.

According to The Times, a Brit who visited the state claimed that the second floor of a glitzy five-star hotel was filled with prostitutes. And the men were all potential punters.

While the man talked to Jenny, from Minsk in Belarus, she offered him “everything, what you like, all night” for the equivalent of about 500 pounds. The man, however, turned down the offer.

This was in the city centre of Dubai, the Gulf emirate where western women got a month in prison for a peck on the cheek. (ANI)

Top 10 most annoying things about hotels

Melbourne, May 11 (ANI): No matter if you are staying in a 5-star hotel or a sub-standard budget lodge, there will be many things you’ll find wrong as far as the place’s services are concerned.

Many establishments seem to get it wrong when it comes to basic parts of their service.

And here are 10 of the most annoying things hotels consistently get wrong:

The Age reports, “1. Breakfast is served … from 7.30am to 7.45am

You”re on holiday, but if you actually want to get that breakfast that was included in the room rate, you”ve got to be up at the crack of dawn or risk missing out. Some hotels have gotten the message in recent times and extended breakfast hours through to 11am, but plenty of others are lagging behind.

2. Bathroom nightmares

A decent bathroom should be a simple thing for a hotel to achieve, but consistently hotels fail on little details that become major pains. Poor design is one. Some places offer no space to place your toiletries in the bathroom, other than on the floor, or put the soap holder outside the shower, instead of in it.

3. Hidden fees and charges

This is a speciality of North American hotels – the fees are there to cover certain ”extras” that the hotel provides, but there”s no way to opt out.

4. Do not disturb? What does that mean?

Many hotel cleaners ignore do not disturb signs.

5. Internet is free, unless you”re paying 400 dollars a night

It”s slowly beginning to change, but one of the big pains with high-end hotels is their expensive Internet charges, whether in-room or at the business centre. Rarely can you pay by the minute or half-hour – it”s normally a 24-hour minimum at an exorbitant price. The irony is that if you stay in a cheaper place – like a backpacker hostel – there”s normally free wireless or at least a couple of free computers available for use.

6. Check-in/check-out times

Late check out is becoming increasingly common in the hotel industry and this is a welcome development. But plenty of places still want you out by 10am on the dot, regardless of how busy the establishment is. Even worse are the places that threaten with charging you for a half-day”s stay if you happen to oversleep and overstay by 30 minutes. And the downside of more late check-outs is that check-in times have also become later. 2pm used to be standard but increasingly this has been pushed back to 3pm.

7. Bigger doesn”t mean better

With so many guests, personal service often goes out the window. Stay in a mega-hotel with hundreds of rooms and you may find yourself stuck on hold when trying to contact the front desk or queuing up for ages in the lobby to ask a simple question.

8. Thin walls, noisy corridors

This is a real problem in buildings that were not designed as hotels. That grand old room that is now three separate guest rooms is likely to be divided by a paper-thin bit of plaster, meaning you can hear your neighbours rolling over in bed – or worse. And the location of windows facing loading bays, foyers or bars can lead to a sleepless night or rude awakening in the early hours.

9. We hear your complaint, but we”re not going to do anything about it

They”ll thank you for bringing it to their attention, but you”re crazy if you think they”re going to do anything about. After all, you”ll be gone in a day or two and then a new guest will arrive – and they might not notice what you were complaining about.

10. How many pillows do you need?

It”s a more minor gripe (which is why it comes in at number 10), but why do high-end hotels insist on burying their beds beneath so many pillows?” (ANI)

Ribery ‘flew underage prostitute to Germany as 26th birthday present’

Paris, Apr 29(ANI): French winger Franck Ribery had paid thousands of pounds to jet an underage prostitute, Zahia Dehar, from France to Germany as a ‘birthday present’ to himself.

Dehar, who had been in hiding since the scandal broke a fortnight ago, revealed that Ribery paid for her first class flights and a five-star hotel for his 26th birthday last year.

“I was Ribery”s birthday present. Franck approached me in a Paris club. He booked me and flew me to Munich to celebrate his 26th birthday,” The Telegraph quoted Dehar, as saying.

“He made reservations at a luxury hotel in Munich. We had sex and he paid me. I was a lovely little present, wasn’t I?” she added.

Ribery has been embroiled in a sex scandal after French police raided the Paris brothel Cafe Zaman, earlier this month.

Dehar had told officers how she had 1,500 pounds-a-night sex with three French international players, including Ribery.

While Ribery has admitted that he had sex with Dehar, he denies paying her or knowing she was only 17-years-old at the time, which would make it illegal. (ANI)

Shaoania urges Pak media to stop looking for ‘masala’ in their private life

Lahore, Apr.28 (ANI): Newly married sports couple Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik have appealed to the Pakistani media to stop intruding into their private life and respect their privacy.

Since their arrival in Pakistan, fans and media have hounded the sports couple, following them everywhere in the country.

“The media needs masala (spice) but it must behave in a way that our personal life does not get affected,” said an annoyed Sania, adding that she was surprised over the media frenzy over her wedding.

“It is not like ours is a great big love story,” The Daily Times quoted Sania, as saying.

Shoaib also recorded his protest against the heightened media glare over the wedding, saying the media should not have sensationalised his marriage.

“Due to the continuous media glare, I and Sania will not able to live like a normal couple. Besides being a husband, I have to play the role of a security guard,” Shoaib said.

Shoania had to face a tough time wading through a huge crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of the celebrity couple at the five star hotel they were staying in Lahore.

As they passed through the crowd they faced severe pushing and shoving causing Sania to almost fall but Shoaib jumped into action by taking her into his arms.

The incident had even brought tears into Sania’s eyes. (ANI)

Over 1200 guests expected to attend Shoaib-Sania ‘walima’ reception in Lahore

Lahore, Apr.21 (ANI): Over 1200 guests are expected to attend the star sports couple Shoaib Malik-Sania Mirza’s ‘walima’ reception, which would be held at a five-star hotel in Lahore on April 25.

According to sources in Shoaib’s family, seats for over 1200 guests have been reserved at the hotel for the function.

According to hotel sources, guests would be served with only one dish during the function.

The newly wed couple is expected to arrive in Lahore later this week, following which they would visit Sialkot, Shoaib’s hometown, where a reception is to be held on April 25.

The hotel management has asked the local police authorities to arrange for foolproof security during the high profile function, The News reports.

The Malik’s are also expecting 15 to 20 Indian guests during both functions.
On Monday, the Andhra Pradesh High Court dismissed all cases against Shoaib, and ordered the police to return his passport.

The court also said that Shoaib and Sania are free to visit Pakistan
whenever they want. (ANI)

Huscorp mum on land buy

The developer behind a proposal for a four-star hotel in Nowra has declined to comment on whether it will buy the land.

The Shoalhaven council says it is going ahead with the sale of land on Bridge Road after a long reclassification process.

But it is unclear if the Huscorp group, which has filed legal proceedings against the council, will continue with the purchase.

The sale stopped amid doubts raised by the Department of Local Government that the land could be sold to a private buyer.

Huscorp withdrew its development application last year and filed a claim for nearly $2 million in the Supreme Court over the failed deal.

When contacted by the ABC, Huscorp director Asram Hanna said he would not comment due to the legal proceedings.

Titanic-themed five star hotel to be erected in Belfast

London, Sep. 7 (ANI): A Titanic-themed boutique hotel is set to be erected at the old headquarters of the Belfast shipyard where the fated Olympic-class passenger liner was built.

A planning application has been lodged to turn the former Harland and Wolff HQ into a 90-bedroom hotel, The Telegraph reports.

The project will involve the refurbishment, part-restoration and extension of the red brick building on Queen’s Island in the east of the city, complete with provision of swimming pool, gym and spa facilities.

The five-star hotel plan is part of the redevelopment of 185 acres of former shipyard land in what has been named The Titanic Quarter.

The developers, Titanic Quarter Ltd, said it was “one of the largest mixed use developments under way in Europe and additional hotel space is an integral part of that mix.”

“Given the enormous global interest in the Titanic and the building’s close association with the ship, such a hotel will add to the Northern Ireland tourist experience,” a spokesman said.

“The plans for the hotel have been devised in consultation with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and will help ensure that the building is appropriately refurbished and restored,” he added.

In January, a separate application was filed for the restoration of two Drawing Offices where the doomed ship’s blueprint was drawn up.

The proposal was to make these offices available for public events.

Under the Titanic Signature Project, which aims at bringing alive the area’s history, hundreds of millions of pounds are being pumped into the Titanic Quarter in the provision of commercial, residential and educational developments. (ANI)

“They chose Italy because it is Danielle’s favourite place.

“Gary has booked out the whole of the hotel because he wants to give his bride a wonderful and magical day.

“They’re very in love and can’t wait to be Mr and Mrs Lineker.”

Lampard’s ex fiancie ‘takes revenge by snogging mystery man in public’

London, May 17 (ANI): Frank Lampard’s ex fiancie Elen Rives seems to have got back at the “cheating” footie ace by smooching a mystery man in public before spending the night with him at a hotel, according to reports.

The Spanish beauty, who dumped the Chelsea star in February, was spotted flaunting a new hunk in the streets of London.

The former model was seen guzzling pink champagne cocktails with the mystery guy at the posh Soho House private members’ club.

The two reportedly kept kissing and cuddling while hopping between bars and later checked into a five-star hotel for the night.

“Frank used to say he loved Elen’s passion and that was certainly on display with this new guy. And once they started kissing it was no holds barred,” News of the World quoted one witness as saying.

“They were snogging on every corner, in doorways and alleyways. They didn’t care who saw them. Elen is clearly smitten,” the witness added.

And a friend of the beauty confirmed: “Elen has met someone she really likes and has fun with. It’s early days but they laugh together, which is exactly what she needs to take her mind off everything.” (ANI)

Slumdog Millionaire’s child stars to attend Oscars

Washington, Feb 20 (ANI): Slumdog Millionaire’s bosses have confirmed that the film’s child stars Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail will be flown to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards.
