“Bondi Rescue” lifeguard breaks neck in surfing wipeout

(Reuters Life!) – Australian lifeguard Kobi Graham, one of the stars of the hit television series “Bondi Rescue,” broke his neck after wiping out on a large wave at a dangerous Sydney surf spot.

Lifestyle

The 30-year-old lifeguard suffered “a hideous wipe out” at Cape Solander on Sunday, hitting the reef head first, local surf media website Coastalwatch (www.coastalwatch.com) said on Monday.

Coastalwatch posted photographs of the wipeout, showing Graham only moments before being thrown onto the reef and later of him being helicoptered to hospital, his neck in a brace.

Cape Solander near the entrance to Botany Bay is one of the world’s most dangerous surf breaks.

“The wave comes out of deep water before literally exploding on a shallow barnacle encrusted rock ledge no more than 10 meters (30 feet) in front of the sheer cliff face,” said Coastalwatch editor Ben Horvath.

“Sunday was one of the biggest days of surf in Sydney all year. Kobi took off on a slabbing 6-8 feet bomb and kind of nose dived, free falling head first into the reef,” said Horvath.

“Kobi is a well respected big wave charger. The entire Sydney surfing community and all his colleagues in the surf lifesaving fraternity wish him a speedy recovery.”

Graham is in a stable condition in hospital.

“Bondi Rescue” is a fly-on-the-wall look at lifeguards at Australia’s most famous beach that shows Graham and his colleagues rescuing swimmers. Now in its fifth season, the show has become an international TV hit.

Man dies after crashing through nightclub window

A man is dead and two others injured after they fell through a nightclub window on the Gold Coast.

Police and building inspectors are investigating the fatal fall.

Police say three men crashed through a full-length glass window and fell nine metres to the ground outside the SAR Club in Orchid Avenue just before 1am AEST.

Two 18-year-old men are in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police say Workplace Health and Safety officers and building inspectors will compile reports and they will be sent to the coroner.

A post mortem examination is also expected to be done today.

Police on the Gold Coast say it is unlikely charges will be laid over the fatal fall.

Superintendent Jim Keogh says he has viewed security footage of the incident and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

“They’ve overbalanced – the full-length glass has given way, broken and the three have fallen the nine metres to the pavement below,” he said.

“It was a minor grapple – there was no punches thrown.”

Superintendent Keogh says the cause of the incident is not clear.

“That’s still the subject of an investigation at the moment being conducted by Surfers Paradise CIB,” he said.

Superintendent Keogh says it is to early to know whether the incident was alcohol fuelled.

“It is something that obviously the investigators will look at the alcohol consumption of all involved,” he said.

Irwins quit movie promo tour

Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin are flying from America to Australia to be with the crocodile hunting family’s patriarch.

Bob Irwin, 69, suffered a serious heart attack at his home near Kingaroy on Sunday.

He is currently in a stable condition in a private Brisbane hospital.

Granddaughter Bindi, 11, has been in the US promoting her feature film debut, Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove.

“They are on their way [home],” the Irwins’ longtime manager, John Stainton, said.

Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove is the fourth instalment of the film franchise. It is being released direct to DVD.

Bindi plays Kirra, a girl sent to live with her grandfather (Beau Bridges) at his dilapidated sea animal park in South Africa.

Kirra discovers an injured baby orca trapped in a lagoon and works tirelessly to rehabilitate it so it can be released into the wild rather than to a rival theme park.

During an interview with talk show host Bonnie Hunt, Bindi said 68-year-old Bridges, who was also a child star, took her under his wing and taught her about acting.

“Before we started filming I was a bit nervous about learning my lines and things like that, but he was telling me not to worry about it and just think about it like it was a conversation,” she said.

Dog attack victim in stable condition

A 67-year-old woman who was severely mauled by a dog in Portland yesterday is in a stable condition in the Alfred Hospital.

Her right arm was almost severed by a family member’s pit bull-staffordshire cross at her home in Pile Street.

The dog was destroyed by police at the scene.

The RSPCA’s Allie Jalbert says dog attacks are not specific to any particular breed.

“Any dog has the ability to bite and obviously the larger the dog, the more powerful the dog then the more damage that dog does,” she said.

“So I don’t know that it’s so much about the specific breed as much about the temperament and the capability of dogs, depending on their size and genetic make-up.”

Rescuers recall horror as dog mauls woman

Neighbours who went to the aid of a woman after she was mauled by a dog in Portland in south-west Victoria say the attack was frightening.

The 67-year-old woman was flown to Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on Tuesday with severe arm and face injuries.

The hospital says she is now in a serious but stable condition.

Ambulance officers earlier described one of the arms as being “partially amputated”.

The woman was in her flat in Pile Street when the pit bull-staffordshire cross set on her. The woman’s grand-daughter alerted neighbours.

One of the rescuers, Martin Jacobsen, says he doubts he will forget the experience.

“I’m still shaking,” he said. “If you’d seen that dog maul … you see tigers on TV mauling animals, but nothing like this.

“I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”

Neighbours entered the house by smashing a glass panel in the front door.

The dog was in the hallway next to the owner, who was injured on the floor.

The neighbour threw a rubbish bin at the dog, sending it into a back room, where it was contained.

Paramedic Justin Nunan says the neighbours saved the woman.

“The attack lasted for about one or two minutes before the neighbour was able beat the dog away with the bin,” he said.

“We have no understanding of why the dog attacked. It was completely unprovoked.

“In this case the lady has been saved by the neighbour’s actions in beating the dog away.”

The dog was destroyed at the scene.

Doctor hacks 8 children to death in China

A former doctor with a history of mental illness has hacked eight children to death with a machete and injured five others at a primary school in south-east China, state media reports.

The attacker was identified as Zheng Minsheng, a 41-year-old who had worked at a community clinic until June, Xinhua news agency quoted the local government in the city of Nanping as saying.

Zheng attacked the children at the entrance of the school as they arrived in the morning.

He was eventually restrained by passers-by and school security guards before police arrested him. No motive for the attack was given.

Three children died at the scene and five others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The five who survived were said to be in a stable condition, the report said, without giving any ages or other details.

The school in Fujian province, which has more than 2,000 students, was closed after the incident.

Classes were to resume on Wednesday and 20 psychologists had been assigned to help students and teachers, the deputy head of the municipal education bureau said.

Dog attacks 90yo bike rider

A 90-year-old man is in a stable condition after he fell off his bicycle while being attacked by a dog at Thomastown in Melbourne’s north.

The man was bitten on the thigh by a neighbour’s dog and then suffered head injuries when he fell off his bike.

“As a result of the attack, he’s actually been thrown off his bike, hitting his head on the ground,” ambulance officer Ziad Nehme said.

“So he suffered a mild head injury as well as some bite wounds to his left thigh.”

The man was taken to the Northern Hospital for treatment.

“The dog was still at the scene at the time so everyone was a bit cautious with regards to getting him in to the ambulance,” Mr Nehme said.

“I think he’ll think twice before he jumps on the bicycle.”
