St Pat’s Races to mark 45yr milestone

The St Patrick’s Races are being held tomorrow and the club says many of the features of this year’s event are a result of community consultation.

Club president Margaret Corradini says the toilets have been fixed, there are more shaded areas and full-strength beer has been put back on the menu.

Ms Corradini says even with the return of the heavy beer, the club has consulted widely with the licensing department and the local police to ensure licensing agreements are met.

She says the event, which is celebrating a milestone this year, is seen as an important event on many social calendars.

“This year’s our 45th year of racing which in itself is absolutely phenomenal for a country race meeting,” she said.

“I think there would be very few country race meetings in Australia that have probably survived for 45 years, so I think people just want to be a part of that celebration.”

NY governor introduces bill to allow gay marriage

NEW YORK
: Gov. David Paterson announced plans Thursday to legalize same-sex marriage in the state of New York, making a political gamble that he
can ride the momentum of other states that have recently allowed the practice.

The proposal is the same bill the Democrat-controlled state Assembly passed in 2007 before it died in the Senate, where the Republican majority kept it from going to a vote. Democrats now control the Senate, but opponents are vowing to make sure this one fails, as well.

The governor’s approval ratings have plunged to below 20 percent, and it’s still unclear how the legislation will play in the state. Paterson says gay marriage is a crucial issue of equal rights in America that cannot be ignored.

“I’m introducing a bill to bring marriage equality to the state of New York,” Paterson said to applause, surrounded by leaders including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is a lesbian.

Paterson, who is black, framed the issue in sweeping terms, invoking abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe and drawing a parallel between the fight to eliminate slavery in the 1800s to the current effort to allow gay marriage
.

“Rights should not be stifled by fear. What we should understand is that silence should not be a response to injustice. And that if we take not action, we will surely lose,” Paterson said.

Paterson said gay and lesbian couples are denied as many as 1,350 civil protections, such as health care and pension rights, because they cannot marry.

Gay marriage is now legal in four states, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa.

At the same time Paterson was to announce his proposal, Sen. Ruben Diaz of the Bronx, an opponent of same-sex marriage, planned to meet with religious leaders to discuss how to block the bill.

Diaz, who is an evangelical pastor, said his meeting in the Bronx was to inform Hispanics, Catholics, evangelicals and others opposed to same-sex marriage of their options to prevent the bill’s passage.

Diaz also said it is “disrespectful” of Paterson to introduce the legislation in the same week that Catholics celebrated the installation of New York City Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

Paterson attended the ceremony Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

“I think it’s a laugh in the face of the new archbishop,” Diaz said Thursday before the start of his meeting. “The Jews just finished their holy week. The Catholics just received the new archbishop. The evangelical Christians just celebrated Good Friday and resurrection. He comes out to do this at this time? It’s a challenge the governor is sending to every religious person in New York and the time for us has come for us to accept the challenge.”

Empire State Building to get a ‘green’ makeover

London, April 7 (ANI): The owners of the Empire State Building have announced that they are planning to turn the tall skyscraper ‘green’, by investing an additional 20 million dollars to reduce its carbon footprint and energy consumption.

According to a report in the Guardian, the current owners of the 102-storey office block, Wien and Malkin, hope to buck the economic trend by making the building environment friendly and charging higher rents.

The retrofit is being added to a renovation of the art deco structure that starts this summer already costing half a billion dollars.

Part of the hard sell to potential new clients will be its “greenness” once the work is completed in 2013.

The plan aims to cut the use of energy by almost 40 percent, which would in turn reduce the emissions of CO2 from the building by some 105,000 metric tonnes a year.

That is no easy feat, bearing in mind that the Empire State has some 6,500 windows, 73 elevators and a total floorspace of 2.6 million square feet.

All the windows will have an extra layer of insulation added by secreting a coated film between two glass panes – done in situ to avoid pollution caused by transporting the glass from an outside destination.

Insulation will be added behind radiators, and the cooling system in the basement will be replaced with new more efficient machines.

Individual workers in the office spaces will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own emissions by being given access through their computers to monitors, which will tell them how much energy is being expended in their part of the building.

Also, the owners have decided that the famous coloured lights on the top of the Empire State that turn green, for instance, on St Patrick’s day, will remain intact, arguing they are responsible for relatively little energy consumption. (ANI)

Obama and the Irish PM share the joke during their joint address

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was just a few paragraphs into an address in Washington when he realised it all sounded a bit too familiar.

It was. He was repeating the speech President Barack Obama had just read from the same teleprompter.

Mr Cowen stopped, turned to the president and said: “That’s your speech.”

A laughing Mr Obama returned to the podium to take over but it seems the script had finally been switched and the US president ended up thanking himself for inviting everyone to the party.

Mr Obama is an accomplished orator but is becoming known in America as the “teleprompt president” over his reliance on the machine when he gives a speech.
Earlier in the day, the president claimed an Irish ancestry, saying his mother’s family could be traced back to Ireland.

He joked to Cowen: “We may be cousins. We haven’t sorted that through yet.”

Speaking in the Oval Office, he told the Irish premier:”Not all Americans are Irish but all Americans support those who stand on the side of peace and peace will prevail.”

The fountains at the White House were dyed green for the day at the request of the First Lady and guests at the cocktail reception drank green sparkling wine from a Californian vineyard.

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon from Northern Ireland and Maggie McCarthy, a traditional Irish dancer and musician from Cork, and the vocal group Celtic Thunder all attended.

Mr Obama joked about the free-flowing bar and warned his guests not to wear lampshades on their heads in front of the cameras.

White House fountains runs green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Washington, Mar.18 (ANI): The fountains on the north and south lawns of the White House turned to a magnificent green colour to mark the Irish national holiday of St.Patrick’s Day, during the visit of the Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen.

“This is an affirmation between one of the strongest bonds between peoples that exists in the world,” Obama said as he met Cowen in at Oval office.

Michelle Obama ordered the White House fountains to run green for the St Patrick’s Day celebrations, The Telegraph reports.

The First Lady said she was inspired by the celebrations in her hometown of Chicago, where the city marks the holiday by dyeing the river green.

The green dye is being used across the US in food and drink to mark St. Patrick’s Day

Obama said his mother’s background could be traced to Ireland, so he was very much interested in the celebrations.

“We may be cousins. We haven’t sorted that through yet,” Obama told Cowen jokingly. (ANI)
