Protests break out in Srinagar against ‘blasphemy’

Srinagar, June 5 — Life in Srinagar came to a standstill when protests erupted across the city after underwears allegedly with impressions of a Muslim holy shrine was spotted in downtown by locals. Police, however, suspect the protests were pre-meditated and were instigated by mischief-mongers “as the picture doesn’t resemble with any mosque”. A few locals in Nowhatta claimed in the morning to have spotted underwear with mosques painted on it being sold on a hand-cart. The residents took it as blasphemy and started pelting stones at private transport and police vehicles. The news spread like wild fire triggering clashes between security forces and protests at Barzalla, Khanyar, Maisuma, Gawkadal, Bohri Kadal, Rajouri Kadal, Kawdara, Gojwara, Padshahi Bagh and several other localities of downtown Srinagar. The police fired blank shots and used tear-gas canisters to disperse stone-pelting youths at more than four places, including Srinagar’s commercial hub Ghanta Ghar. Shopkeepers downed their shutters at Lal Chowk and transport by the sundown got thin because of the spreading protests. Dozens of protesters were injured in the demonstrations. Major protest rallies were carried out at Jama Masjid and Khanyar against the “sacrilegious pictures”. The police, however, suspect foul play. “This is a job of mischief mongers. The picture doesn’t seem to resemble a mosque,” said SSP Srinagar Reyaz Bedar. He said the police suspect the protests were pre-meditated and planned by mischief mongers. “It seems the youths were planted in several localities to disturb normal life. It’s pre-meditated,” said Bedar without explaining who could be responsible behind the protests. Protests in Srinagar were on decline in the recent past. Even alleged killing of three civilians by the army in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district failed to evoke any public resentment and no protests were reported in Srinagar over the incident. A police spokesman said the underwear garment in question has been examined. “It was found that it carries the imprints and sketches of various buildings on it which resemble places like Big Ben in London, St. Paul’s Cathedral of London and other places,” said the spokesman.

He appealed to the government to prepare a contingency plan to ensure timely relief to the affected and to minimise the losses. Tarigami said crop insurance scheme that was recently announced for the state be implemented during the monsoons and stressed for inclusion of horticulture sector under the scheme.

Youths, police clash in Srinagar over ”blasphemous” depiction

Srinagar, June 6 (PTI) Groups of youths took out a procession here today to protest alleged blasphemous depiction of Kaba Sharief on some products and clashed with police prompting them to fire warning shots and tear smoke shells. The protests continued for the second day today in the city despite Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealing to people not to pay heed to “rumours”.

Fifteen persons were injured in clashes between police and stone-pelting protestors in the city yesterday. Youth carrying garments allegedly depicting photographs of Kaba Sharief took out a march in Maisuma in the heart of the city trying to enforce a shutdown but police prevented them from coming on the main road, officials said.

They said the protesters pelted stones on the policemen who retaliated with tear smoke shells. They also fired a few warning shots to disperse them, the officials added.

The clashes remained confined to the Maisuma locality, they said adding, no one was injured. Police after examining the garments found that they carry imprints and sketches of various buildings which resemble places like Big Ben in London, St Paul”s Cathedral of London and other places.

“No sketch has any likeness to any Muslim religious place or building,” a police spokesman said. Disturbed over the protests, Omar last night appealed to people not to fall prey to rumour-mongers.

“Some elements are bent upon to disturb peace for vested interests and people should not get carried away by their nefarious designs,” he said. Meanwhile, protests also rocked Banihal town of Jammu region, where a shutdown was observed on the issue.

Over 1,000 people took out a protest rally on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and raised slogans. They also blocked traffic for some time.

Hurriyat calls for shutdown in Srinagar on death anniversary of Mirwaiz and Lone

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), May 21 (ANI): The Hurriyat Conference has called for a shutdown on Friday on the occasion of the death anniversaries of prominent leaders, Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Ghani Lone.

Shops, colleges and business establishments have been closed in view of the shutdown. The traffic is also off the roads.

Most people are staying indoors, and government offices have registered a very low attendance of employees.

“The Kashmir shutdown marks the death anniversary of Moulvi Farooq, and has been called for by the Hurriyat Conference,” said Asif Ahmad, a local resident of Srinagar.

The shutdown was initiated at the behest of Hurriyat supremo, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, son of Moulvi Mohammad Farooq. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, along with several other Hurriyat leaders, would be addressing a public meeting at the Eidgah ground.
No incidents of violence have, however, been reported so far.

“The extremism and violence that is going on in the valley since the past many years must be stopped. This is the message that the Hurriyat Conference is sending to the people of Kashmir through the shutdown,” said Mukhtar Ahmad, a local resident of Srinagar.

Hurriyat leader Abdul Ghani Lone was assassinated on May 21, 2002, while commemorating the twelfth anniversary of Moulvi Mohammad Farooq. (ANI)

Amnesty International to assess human rights scenario in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 19 (ANI): A two-member team of Amnesty International met Separatist Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq here and discussed various aspects to assess the state of human rights in the valley.

The team, comprising Bikram J. Batra and Ramesh Gopal Krishen arrived on Monday on a six-day visit to assess the human rights situation and note instances of human rights violations in the state.

“They should responsibly assess the situation and condemn the violations and take up the issue with Central government. And if the Government does not respond then they should make it public that despite their repeated approach to the government, the latter has remained silent,” said Farooq.

“We want that this organisation should bring out the real situation, make it clear and take a stand on the issue then,” he added.

The Amnesty members said they would be meeting all sections of the people to obtain first hand information of any violation of human rights.

“The purpose of the visit is to get a better understanding of the human right situation here. We are meeting with all the key activists, political actors, government officials, lawyers and people who have suffered from human right violations,” said Batra. (ANI)

Civil Service Examination topper gets a warm welcome in J-K

Srinagar, May 8 (ANI): Dr. Faesal Shah, the topper of the 2009 Civil Service Examination, was given a warm welcome at his hometown in Jammu and Kashmir.

People from the neighbourhood as well as far-flung areas of the city gathered at his residence to welcome him amid drumbeats, flowers and garlands.

The 26-year-old MBBS graduate, who topped the list of 875 successful candidates, expressed his delight at the hearty welcome, and said he is happy to have proved the myth of indiscrimination for Kashmiris in the Indian Civil Services to be a wrong conception.

“There are many myths circulating in Kashmir. One of the myths is that we are getting discriminated; one of the myths is that we don”t have exposure, we don”t have talent; I think we will have to deal with inferiority complex that is inside us,” said Dr. Faesal Shah.

“I have proven today that a Kashmiri can do it in the first attempt and do it without coaching and he can do it from Srinagar only,” he added.

The locals lauded his success and termed it as the pride of Kashmir.

“We have talent as shown by Faesal Saheb. He has made Kashmir proud. We lack exposure that is the only problem. Rest is okay,” said Athar Sayed, a resident of Srinagar.

Transforming a hurdle into an opportunity, Dr. Faesal Shah coped with personal tragedy to become the first from Kashmir to top the Union Public Service Commission 2009 examinations.

The untimely death of his father in 2002 at the hands of “unidentified militants” days before his pre-medical test did not deter Dr. Faesal from clearing the examination or becoming the first candidate from Kashmir in several years to be selected to the Indian Administrative Service through open merit.

Dr.Faesal was born in Sogam village of Jammu and Kashmir”s Kupwara District. (ANI)

Kashmir Bar Association members protest against police attack in Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 30 (ANI): Members of the Kashmir Bar Association took out a protest march through the streets of Srinagar on Monday in protest against an alleged police attack on their Vice President, Eijaz Ahmad Bedar.

The rally commenced from the High Court and ended at Regal Chowk in Srinagar.
Condemning the attack by the police on a senior functionary of the bar, the protesting lawyers resorted to the chanting pro-freedom and anti India slogans.

Later, Mian Qayoom, the President of the Kashmir Bar Association, termed the attack an act of state terrorism.

“We want to tell them that they can”t pressurise Kashmir public all the time like this. We want that all people should condemn this incident. Police officials roam freely and say that there is nobody who can say a word to them as they pay 7,000 rupees every week to their superiors. Then you can very well imagine what police is doing in Kashmir,” said Qayoom.

Qayoon claimed that the attack was carried out at the behest of the Senior Superintendent of Police, (SSP) (Srinagar) at Batmaloo.

He accused the police of misusing certain prevailing regulations under the Jammu and Kashmir Disturbed Areas Act. (ANI)

Indian Army sounds terror alert in J-K

Srinagar, Mar 29 (ANI): The Indian Army on Monday sounded a terror alert, claiming that as many as 400 infiltrators are attempting to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir.

“This is going to be hot summer terrorism-wise in Kashmir as approximately 300 militants are active in the valley while another 400 are waiting in the wings in PoK to cross over to this side to step up violence,” said Brigadier General Staff, 15th Corps, Gurmeet Singh.

Singh added that there was no need to worry, as the troops were well prepared to confront any challenges.

He, however, claimed that the weapons, ammunition, equipment, food items, medicines and also some video-clips and photographs recovered from the killed militants showed signs of a high degree of terrorists anxiety.

“Approximately, 42 training camps were intact across the border. Of them 34 are active and 400 militants are waiting for an opportunity to cross over to this side from 20 launching pads,” said Singh, adding that the army had prior information about the recent infiltration attempts in Kupwara district”s keran sector.

“We were prepared for this and eliminated 8 terrorists in keran sector between March 24 to March 28. The mixed group of militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hizbul Mujahideen and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen comprising eight terrorists were eliminated,” Singh said.

Singh further said the operation against the terrorists was still on in the region and the area is being extensively searched to avoid any untoward incident. (ANI)

“We launched this operation in Sawjian sector near Line of Control. We recovered nearly four kilograms of RDX, three magazines of AK-47 assault rifle, detonators and some grenades,” said Major Ajay Pathania.

Among the assorted armament items seized were four kilograms of RDX, nine detonators, three magazines of AK-47 assault rifle and nine grenades. (ANI)

Pakistan”s invitation for talks evokes mixed reaction in Kashmir

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), Mar 26 (ANI): The Pakistani Government”s invitation to some Hurriyat Conference leaders to come for talks to resolve the Kashmir issue has evoked a mixed reaction in Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdul Gani Bhat, a senior Hurriyat leader, played down the invite asserting that a resolution of the Kashmir issue would come only through talks.

“If you ask me, I am very interested that people (Kashmiri leaders) should go there (Pakistan) and talk. People should come here and talk. They should talk here and go there, so that the process of dialogue can begin and a solution emerges,” said Bhat.

Residents in Srinagar, however, feel that Islamabad is attempting to create a wedge between the moderate and hardline Hurriyat factions to prevent the talks from being fruitful.

“It (Hurriyat Conference) is not united at all. There are certain pitfalls in the organisation. That is why the Pakistan Government is taking advantage of those pitfalls and they are sidelining some leaders of the Kashmir Valley,” claimed Shabir Ahmad, a resident of Srinagar.

Others also expressed similar views.

“If everybody had been invited it would been better for Jammu and Kashmir. It seems that Pakistan is trying to create some different situation. That is why Pakistan is inviting some and not inviting others,” observed Javaid Ahmad, another resident of Srinagar.

Pakistan has reportedly invited Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yaseen Malik for talks, but has ignored leaders like Abdul Gani Bhat, Abbas Ansari and Bilal Gani Lone. (ANI)

Opening of communication lines with PoK will boost cross-border trade: Omar Abdullah

Jammu March 19 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that telephone lines with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have been opened to boost cross border trade and address any security concern.

” Let us understand the requirement for these five lines. We started trade with the other side of Kashmir, but we were carrying our trade in the circumstances in which there was neither communication nor banking relation, which made conduct of trade almost impossible. In order to a streamline this process and also remove some loopholes, these lines for communication are now being opened, so this process of trading will get a boost,” Abdullah said this after his speech in the assembly during the ongoing budget session.

When asked about possible security threats after the opening up of these telephone lines, he said, ” The fact that we are starting with the limited number of five lines is exactly to address any security concern and also to see how it works. As we see the progress of it, we will see at it again”.

When asked to comment about the threat of Jamet-ul -Mujahideen to Mufti Bashir-ud-din (Mufte-e-Azam of Kashmir), he said, ” We all receive threats from time to time and it is the nature of what we do, the fact of the matter is anytime we express statements like this, somebody or the other is going to be upset. But just because somebody is upset, doesn”t mean that we should stop talking.”

He further said a total of 35,000 troops have been withdrawn from the state since he took over on January 5 last year.

“About 35,000 soldiers were relocated along with their camps and we did not make any tall claims about it; neither did it affect the situation nor there was any rise in the militancy,” he added.

He said that as and when the security situation improves, the army footprint will be decreased.

“We have removed several bunkers in Srinagar and did not allow construction anymore,” he said and added that the state police was being brought at the forefront for security duty. (ANI)

Self-earning schemes initiated for militancy victims in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 19 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Government has initiated self-earning schemes in collaboration with a local NGO for the victims of militancy.

Rabiya Baji, who runs a knitting center, says she began it with the aim of giving employment to poor women who have been affected by militancy. The center opened a few days ago to an excellent response.

Baji”s center has been provided with sweater-knitting machines and other items for women to manufacture woolen goods.

“The government is also giving some aid and I”m helping those people who have become aimless so that they not only get employed but also give others employment,” said Baji.
The vocational training provided by Baji”s center has found many takers.

“The conditions here are so bad that in some families the people have lost their brothers, fathers and others. With vocational training we would be able to earn and improve our family”s condition,” said Rehana, a victim of militancy.

The women who take up training are also given rations and a stipend. (ANI)

Arrested terror suspects family stage protest in Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 15 (ANI): Family members of Bashir Ahmad Baba, who was arrested by Gujarat Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) staged a protest in Srinagar on Monday.

The family claimed that Baba does not have links with militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the ATS conducted a raid and arrested Baba, 32, in Ahmedabad.

The family said Baba was in Ahmedabad to undergo a training programme conducted by a Non-government Organisation.

Seeking his release, Baba’s family members urged the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to personally supervise the case.

“We want the State Government and Omar Abdullah should handle and supervise the case personally. We request the chief minister to find out why he (Bashir) has been arrested and for what reason he has been arrested and inform us,” said Nazir Ahmad Baba, brother of alleged militant.

The family members say he had been framed and they had not been informed about the reasons of his arrest.

“He (Bashir) has been staying there (Gujarat) for last one month. Yesterday we came to know that he has been arrested when we watched news. They (police) said that this Srinagar boy has links with Hizbul Mujahideen and he has been manufacturing bombs. They (police) said a lot of things. This is totally wrong. He doesn”t have any links with Hizbul Mujahideen. He is totally innocent,” added Nazir.

Meanwhile the ATS said that it has seized documents from Baba including a diary containing e-mail addresses and contact number of persons in Gujarat and other places.

The ATS is scrutinizing the contact numbers and e-mail addresses found from Bashir and trying to trace it.

A local court in Gujarat’s Anand city has remanded Baba to 14-day police custody.

According to the ATS, Baba’s main job was to identify vulnerable youth, brain wash them and sent them to Pakistan for terror training.

Baba was also an expert in explosives and used to make bombs using tin cans of Pepsi, they said.

Baba also known as ”Pepsi Bomber” was capable of making bombs using tin cans which could be exploded using timer devices and could also be used as hand grenades. (ANI)
