Researchers operate biomedical robots from different locations worldwide via Internet

Washington, September 18 (ANI): Experts from the University of Washington and SRI International have jointly developed a new software protocol, to standardize the way biomedical robots are managed over the Internet.

Nine research teams from universities and research institutes around the world recently made a successful demonstration of biomedical robots operated from different locations in the U.S., Europe, and Asia with the help of the ‘Interoperable Telesurgical Protocol’.

In a 24-hour period, each participating group connected over the Internet, and controlled robots at different locations.

The tests performed demonstrated how a wide variety of robot and controller designs can seamlessly interoperate, allowing researchers to work together easily and more efficiently.

The demonstration also evaluated the feasibility of robotic manipulation from multiple sites, and was conducted to measure time and performance for evaluating laparoscopic surgical skills.

“Although many telemanipulation systems have common features, there is currently no accepted protocol for connecting these systems. We hope this new protocol serves as a starting point for the discussion and development of a robust and practical Internet-type standard that supports the interoperability of future robotic systems,” said SRI’s Tom Low.

The protocol is expected to allow engineers and designers that usually develop technologies independently, to work collaboratively, determine which designs work best, encourage widespread adoption of the new communications protocol, and help robotics research to evolve more rapidly.

Its early adoption may encourage robotic systems to be developed with interoperability in mind, and avoid future incompatibilities.

“We’re very pleased with the success of the event in which almost all of the possible connections between operator stations and remote robots were successful. We were particularly excited that novel elements such as a simulated robot and an exoskeleton controller worked smoothly with the other remote manipulation systems,” said Professor Blake Hannaford of the University of Washington. Malaysia gives RM1 million grant for Malay Indian tuition centre

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 18 (ANI): The Malaysian Government has allocated RM1 million to the Sri Murugan Centre to help poor and deserving Indian students excel in their education.

The centre’s director and founder, M. Thambirajah, informed about the grant after receiving the cheque from Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak in Putrajaya on Wednesday.

The centre was established in 1982 to focus on education. It provides tuition for UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM students. It has 103 branches throughout the country, The Star reports.

Thambirajah said that over the years the centre had produced 16,000 graduates, and added that the funds would be used to open new centres with better facilities.

Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the National Youth Skill Training Institute’s courses would be revised to be more relevant to the job market.

He said his ministry was seeking the assistance of the private sector to identify the areas of demand so that courses could be tailored accordingly. (ANI)

Sohail’s diatribe against Butt for Pak’s World Cup hosting fiasco

Lahore, Sep.4 (ANI): Former Pakistan captain and left hand opener Aamir Sohail has criticized Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt for misleading board patron, President Asif Ali Zardari and the public on the 2011 World Cup hosting issue.

Sohail, who resigned from the National Cricket Academy’s (NCA) Director post recently, flayed Butt for calling general public ‘naove’.

Let me assure Mr. Ijaz that the people of Pakistan are not naove. They are passionate about cricket, knowledgeable and fully aware of what is going on in the world of cricket. With all due respect Mr. Ijaz, you are the one who is wearing blinkers and do not have a clue as how to handle the affairs of cricket domestically and internationally,” Sohail said.

Sohail, in his statement, said Butt has no idea about tackling issues at international forums and held him responsible for the 2011 World Cup hosting fiasco.

“His letter to the ICC president accusing the chief executive officer of the ICC of influencing full members to support the IDI’s (commercial arm of the ICC) decision to relocate matches from Pakistan does not augur well with diplomatic norms when you are handling international matters, Mr Ijaz must know,” Sohail stated.

He lambasted Butt for the inept method in which the probe regarding March 3 terror attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore proceeded.

Sohail raised questions over the laid back attitude of the PCB, saying the whole issue was mishandled by the board.

“It was a major contributory factor in the subsequent developments vis-a-vis the World Cup 2011. The co-hosts were not contacted after the incident despite strong advice from some of his staff. Instead, he castigated ICC match referee Chris Broad. This did not go well in the world cricket regulatory body,” The Daily Times quoted Sohail, as saying.

“It was height of incompetence of the PCB officials that rather than accepting the responsibility they tried to persistently pass the buck on the government,” he added. (ANI)

Muralitharan to play Twenty20 cricket for Queensland Bushrangers

Melbourne, Aug.27 (ANI): Champion Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan will join West Indian Dwayne Bravo as the Queensland Bushranger’s second international recruit for the national Twenty20 competition.

While both players are not eligible to play in October’s Champions League international Twenty20 tournament and are committed only for this season’s month-long Big Bash, they would be eligible to turn out at next year’s Champions League if the team qualifies, reports Fox Sports.

In addition, the 37-year-old off-spinner could reshape Victoria’s Twenty20 bowling attack, which in recent seasons has been well-served by the likes of pacers Dirk Nannes, Shane Harwood and Clint McKay.

“It could be an all-spin attack, because really we’ve got [Brad] Hodge and [David] Hussey, [Cameron] White, Murali and also [Jon] Holland and [Bryce] McGain,” coach Greg Shipperd said.

The Bushrangers have also overcome the loss of long-time major sponsor Carlton and United Breweries with a three-year agreement with Dubai-focused property developer Dheeraj and East Coast (DEC). (ANI)

ICC failed to deal with Muralitharan’s chucking: Richardson

Christchurch, Aug 24 (ANI): Former New Zealand opener Mark Richardson has accused the Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan of breaching the 15 degree flexion rule.

Richardson said Muralitharan often bends his arm beyond the 15-degree norm even though he felt it was not the spinner but the indifferent International Cricket Council (ICC), which was at fault.

“There is no easy way to put this, no soft way to broach it, so here goes – Muttiah Muralitharan is throwing the ball,” Richardson wrote in Herald on Sunday.

“I know he’s been tested, re-tested, tested again and cleared. And I know, with the special makeup of his limbs to the naked eye, his action looks worse than it is. But, for goodness sake, half of cricket is now not watched with the naked eye, thanks to the invention of super-slow-motion cameras, hot-spots, snicko and hawk-eyes.

“Many of the slow-motion replays I’ve seen of Murali have only strengthened my conviction he is exceeding the 15 degrees bending and straightening allowance. Is it not meant to be the other way round? Isn’t the hi-tech equipment meant to alleviate my fears?” he asked.

Unlike former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe, who often flays Muralitharan, Richardson didn’t blame the offie, but opined ICC had failed to deal with the issue.

“I don’t blame Murali for this situation. Murali can only do what he does – and what he does he does as a champion, and unlike the other great spinner of my time, Murali does it with good grace and gentlemanly conduct,” Richardson said.

“The problem lies with the inappropriate way in which the ICC has decided to police throwing. A player is suspected of throwing and then, for want of a better term, tested in a laboratory. We’ve all seen the pictures of Murali lit up with bulbs. To his credit he volunteered for this. Apparently he proved he wasn’t a chucker.
“But did he really? What he proved is that he can bowl within limitation, not that in the heat of battle he actually does,” The Dawn quoted him, as saying.

He said that the way the ICC has gone about dealing with this situation, too many bowlers now appear to have suspect actions and can operate for too long before there is any reaction. (ANI)

Outcry after college bans Muslim girl from wearing a veil in Mangalore

Mangalore, Aug 21 (ANI): College students of various colleges under the banner of the Dakhina Kannada Students Federation (DKSF) held a protest march here against a city college after it barred a Muslim girl from attending classes for wearing a burqa (veil).

Seventeen-year-old Aysha Asmin, a first year B. Com student of Sri Venkataramana Swamy College, Bantwal, was allegedly prevented by the college authorities from entering college campus wearing a burqa.

Holding placards and raising slogans, the students demanded action against the college authorities.

“We want justice. It means we don’t want to do any inequality in the campus. We want equality. But we want to follow our fundamental rights,” said Ruksana, president, Girls Islamic Organisation.

Seetharama Mayya, Principal, Sri Venkataramana Swamy College, said that Asmin can continue with her studies in the college but she has to abide by the rules of the college.

“She can remain in the college. She can continue her education, provided she abides our rules and regulations. Except classes…They can come with their dress, with their burqa in the college and they can keep it in the ladies room and while going back they can wear it again. That’s our tradition. That has been happening for several years,” said Mayya.

Meanwhile, the college is contemplating a dress code for students at the campus. (ANI)

Hameed backs “talented” rookie Akmal to break his fastest 1000-run record

London, Aug .12 (ANI): Applauding young batsman Umar Akmal for his brilliant performance in the just concluded Sri Lanka One-Day International series, Pakistan opener Yasir Hameed has said Akmal has the potential to be a world-class batsman and break his record of scoring 1000 one day runs in 24 innings.

In an interview with PakPassion, Hameed described Akmal as a stylish and talented batsman.

“He’s a very talented and stylish batsman. It took me 24 innings to reach 1000 one day runs which is the fastest for Pakistan, but I feel that Umar has the potential to break that record,” Hameed said.

Hameed, who is currently playing league cricket in England, said Akmal could become an important player in the middle order.

Umar has all the attributes to become an important part of the Pakistan middle order and he already has 192 runs in only 4 innings, so he has every chance of beating my record,” he said.

The overall record of scoring 1000 runs in the least number of innings is held by famous West Indian batsman Viv Richards, who took just 21 innings to achieve the feat. (ANI)

Deemed universities to be evaluated

New Delhi, July 13(ANI): Minister of State for Human Resource and Development D Purandeswari on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that University Grants Commission (UGC) has started reviewing the functioning of deemed universities on a government direction.

Purandeswari also said that HRD ministry has ordered an evaluation of the functioning of the deemed universities by an independent team of experts, which has been separately nominated by the government.

She also informed that government has so far granted ‘deemed’ university status to 128 institutions, including 62 in the last five years, and said all proposals on deemed universities would be on hold until the review is completed.

Purandeswari said that several deemed universities have violated UGC guidelines, as they had set up new departments, off campuses and study centres without approval.

She further informed that apart from five institutions, UGC has not given approval to any university which have set off-shore campuses.

Institutions which have UGC approval are Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Vinayak Mission’s Research Foundation, Birla Institute of Technology and Science and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute. (ANI)

Pak only ‘orchestrating terrorism’ by blaming India for every terror attack: Editorial

Islamabad, June 19 (ANI): While terror strikes across Pakistan continues unabated, authorities have not spared a single opportunity to blame India for creating havoc inside Pakistan, but an editorial carried out in Pakistan’s leading daily highlights the fact that Islamabad must introspect on its own deeds before putting the blame on its neighbour.

Recently, Lahore police nabbed one Zubair alias Naik Muhammad, allegedly involved in the terrorist attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team.

Zubair is a member of the Punjab Taliban, an offshoot of the banned terror organisation Lashkar-e Jhangvi, which has strong ties with Al Qaeda, the editorial said.

While announcing the arrest of Zubair, and his nefarious links with several militant groups, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) of Lahore, Pervaiz Rathore, forgot that it was him who had held India responsible for the terror strike on the islanders immediately after the brazen incident on March 3, it added.

How many times we have seen Pakistan denying links with extremists, or providing safe haven to terrorist organizations? Innumerable, the editorial opined.

However, Pakistan, by denying the world known fact, is actually orchestrating terrorism, which is now even threatening its own sovereignty, it went on to add.

It feared that what was really disturbing was the involvement of militias based in South Punjab in different terror acts.

“Mumbai was attacked from South Punjab. Most of the suicide-bombers have been from this region which is characterised by large feudal holdings in the countryside and extreme poverty in the cities,” the editorial said.

It quoted the famous US writer, Selig Harrison, as also having raised fears about the increasing threat perception emanating from the region which stretches from Jhang to Bahawalpur, and is dotted with madrassas.

“The danger of an Islamist takeover of Pakistan is real. It comes from a proliferating network of heavily armed Islamist militias in the Punjab heartland and major cities, directed by Lashkar-e-Toiba, a close ally of Al Qaeda, which staged the terrorist attack last November in Mumbai,” said Harrison.

Apart from the madrassas, which are categorised by the people as jihadi and non-jihadi, there are mosques that supply fighters and suicide-bombers to the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the editorial said.

The trend had started during the Taliban rule in Kabul in the 1990s and has continued after the establishment of Lal Masjid as an entrepôt of warriors moving between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the editorial concluded. (ANI)

LTTE political wing leaders asked to surrender were shot dead

London, May 20 (ANI): The Sri Lankan Army has been reportedly accused of killing two senior LTTE leaders of the political wing, who were trapped in the war zone and wanted to surrender as per the Lankan Government’s instructions.

In a flurry of emails, text messages and telephone calls that passed between NGOs, a Norwegian Government and Sri Lankan officials in Colombo, the two LTTE political leaders frantically inquired as to how they could give themselves up.

But the attempt to surrender by the head of the LTTE’s political wing Balasingham Nadesan and Seevaratnam Pulidevan, who led the Tamil Tigers peace secretariat, failed, The Independent reports.

They were shot dead sometime between midnight on May 17 and the early hours of the next morning.

The chief intermediary for the two men was the Norwegian Government’s Environment Minister Erik Solheim, apparently received calls from LTTE figures who said they wanted to surrender.

Trine Eskedal, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo, said: “The minister said he spoke with Pulidevan at midnight, who gave him the message that the political leaders wanted to surrender (to the ICRC). At the time he could hear gunshots in the background.” She said that an official, then contacted both the ICRC and the Sri Lankan Government.

The ICRC confirmed last night that it had received word from the Norwegians that the two leaders were looking to give themselves up.

The Sri Lankan Government’s point man in the negotiations appears to have been Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona. He said that in the days leading up to Sunday evening, he had received a number of messages indicating that Nadesan and Pulidevan wanted a way out.

Kohona said that his response had been that “there was only one way to surrender that is recognised by military practice.” He said they should obtain a white flag and give themselves up. “I kept saying this for three days,” he added.

Kohona produced a text message stored on his phone which he had sent to the NGO at 8.46 a.m. on Sunday, 16 hours before the Norwegian minister had his final conversation with the LTTE leaders.

The message – in response to a question from the NGO as to whether the two political leaders would be safe if they gave themselves up – read: “Just walk across to the troops, slowly! With a white flag and comply with instructions carefully. The soldiers are nervous about suicide bombers.”

LTTE’s International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan on Tuesday accused Colombo of treachery in the killing of the political wing leaders, and said it is a crime against humanity that needs to be investigated.

“We were instructed to make contact with the 58th Division of the Sri Lankan forces in the war zone, un-armed and carrying white flags. B. Nadesan and Puleedevan were un-armed and carrying white flags and were called on by the Officers of the 58th Division to come forward for discussions. When they complied they were both shot and killed,” he added. (ANI)

ICC’s decision to remove Pakistan as World Cup location was not unanimous: PCB

Lahore, May 19 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision of removing Pakistan as a location for the World Cup 2011 matches was not unanimous as reported in the media.

Last month the ICC stripped Pakistan of its rights to co-host the 2011 World Cup following the terrorist attack in Lahore when gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team bus. The ICC said the members unanimously approved the decision.

“An impression is being created in media that the decision of the last ICC executive board’s meeting held in Dubai stripping Pakistan of its right to stage World Cup matches was made unanimously.

“It has also been reported that the PCB chairman abstained from voting on this issue and therefore allowed the decision to be unanimous. It is also being alleged that proper preparations were not made and necessary homework was not done in representing Pakistan’s point of view to the ICC on this issue,” said a spokesman for the PCB.

He claimed the decision of the ICC executive board was not unanimous because the PCB chief did cast his vote against the proposal, the Daily Times reported.

“Moreover, it may be emphasised that issue of taking the World Cup matches away from Pakistan was never on the agenda of the meeting.

“The item of agenda under which this decision was made out of blue related to assessment of general security situation for international cricket. This is why it is the PCB’s stand that the aid decision was taken unlawfully, without proper notice and without affording PCB a fair representation,” the spokesman added. (ANI)

England keen to become ‘home away from home’ for Pak cricket

London, May 17 (ANI): England is keen to become a ‘home away from home’ for Pakistan cricket, as several foreign teams have refused to tour the South-Asian country due to the precarious security situation there.

According to The News, arrangements are being made for Pakistan to play a four-match Test series in England next year against Australia.

“We all recognise that Pakistan are having an issue at the moment, in terms of being able to stage home matches. If we can get this sort of neutral event, that does help them,” the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive David Collier said.

Several teams have refused to tour Pakistan in the recent past citing security reasons, and the terror attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in March, in which six players were injured, has only worsened the situation.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) also shifted 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan saying conditions are not conducive in the country to organize such a major event. (ANI)

President Rajapaksa returns to Colombo, two top LTTE leaders killed

Colombo, May 17 (ANI): A visibly jubilant President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to Sri Lanka from Jordan on Sunday where he announced his military’s victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

After arriving in Colombo having cut short his visit, Rajapaksa saluted his country.

Welcomed by hundreds of supporters at the international airport here, Rajapaksa on arrival said that the country had been “liberated” from LTTE’s terrorism.

“Before stepping on Sri Lankan soil, Mr. Rajapaksa, who had gone to attend the G-11 summit in Jordan, paid tribute to his motherland by placing his forehead on the ground and worshiping the land he has liberated from terrorism,” said the Defence Ministry.

On his arrival he was welcomed by his cabinet and was blessed by Buddhist, Catholic, Hindu and Muslim priests.

On Saturday, addressing the summit of G-11 nations in Jordan, Rajapaksa declared that the LTTE had been defeated militarily and that it would be finished by the time he gets back to the country.

Rajapaksa stated his government was firmly committed to seeking a “homegrown solution” acceptable to all communities living in Sri Lanka and cautioned that even after its defeat in Sri lanka the LTTE could continue to sustain itself overseas.

Meanwhile, two top Tiger leaders were among 70 killed in last leg of fighting amid unconfirmed reports of about 300 rebels committing suicide on Saturday.

Senior LTTE leaders Swarnam and Shashi Master were reportedly killed in fierce fighting during the last leg of confrontation between troops and the LTTE on Saturday, the ministry stated.

Though the LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran’s whereabouts still remained a mystery, unconfirmed reports said that about 300 LTTE cadres committed mass suicide on Saturday night after troops zeroed in on them in the country’s embattled north.

Moreover, 70 rebels were killed in a confrontation with troops early Sunday morning, the military said.

Troops confronted the LTTE fighters, who tried to escape from the Nandikadal lagoon in the north east part of the country, killing 70 Tiger rebels, it said.

Six LTTE boats were also destroyed in the operation and the bodies of those killed were subsequently found, it said.

As many as 24,988 Tamil civilians have crossed over from the LTTE areas to the governments controlled ones since May 14 and are camping in welfare camps, the Army said.

“The exodus is continuing and the rescue operation by Sri Lanka Army is in full swing,” it said. (ANI)

Lanka Army discovers underwater rebel Tamil hideout

Colombo, May 9 (ANI): The Sri Lankan military says it has found a large metal structure that may have been intended to be used as an underwater home or hiding-place by the leadership of the Tamil rebels.
The Independent quoted officials as saying that the 360 foot long and 25foot wide structure, apparently split into three sections, had been found on iron rails.

In the seabed near by, a 300ft long canal had been dug, up to 30ft deep. Work was still being done on the structure by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the town of Irattavaikkal when encroaching government troops forced them to leave.

“It’s not a vessel, it’s only a structure, but someone could move inside there,” said military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.

“We believe they may have intended to make use of this underwater,” he added.

The potential hiding place is just one of many pieces of LTTE hardware and equipment that have been found in recent weeks as the rebels and their leader, Velupillai Prabakaran, have been squeezed into an ever- diminishing patch of land.

Last month, the military claimed to have discovered several basic submarines that were being constructed by the rebels, possibly to be used to escape. (ANI)

Lankan Tamil protest in Canada enters fourth day

Toronto, Apr 30 (ANI): The protest by Tamil people living in Canada, who want the West to broker a ceasefire between the Sri Lankan Army and the separatist Tigers, entered its fourth day on Wednesday with police refusing to break up the protest as long as it remains peaceful.

Hours later demonstrators tried to push their way north of University Avenue. The police arrested 15 people and drove the crowd back.

“We had identified an area that we thought, in our view, enabled the protesters to make their points in a way that was consistent with public safety,” said Mark Pugash, Director of public information. “For some reason, it appears, some people chose to break out of that area.”

Constable Tony Vella, another police spokesman, said the demonstration has police being very careful about what they do.

“You don’t want this, basically, to turn ugly. It could be a volatile situation,” Globe and Mail quoted him, as saying.

The 15 people face charges for mischief and breaching the peace.. Pugash expects the stretch of University Avenue will remain closed throughout Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.

Police say the protesters have no permit, but that they are not breaking any laws, other than some noise bylaws. Legal experts say that may not be the case.

Pugash refused to speculate on what police could do to get protesters off the street, saying the goal of officers is to maintain the peace, minimize the traffic impact and support the right to protest.

The protest, which began Monday, is the largest along the street in a decade. For nearly three months in 1999, Serbian protesters gathered outside the US consulate to protest a NATO bombing campaign, a demonstration that sent two officers to hospital and cost taxpayers 2.1million dollars in police overtime. Lankan Army captures Valayarmadam, six sq km away from Prabhakaran

Colombo, Apr 26 (ANI): Sri Lankan Defence Ministry on Sunday said that the Army has captured strategic Valayarmadam area and encircled remaining six square kilometre strip of land which could be the possible hideout of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.

“Sri Lankan soldiers have liberated Valayarmadam area and so far rescued 500 civilians held hostage by the LTTE from there,” the Defence Ministry said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, LTTE’s political head B. Nadesan has denied the charges that his group was forcibly recruiting children as fighters to confront the government forces.

The fighting between the LTTE and the Lankan Army has reached its final stages in the past few days and the government has described its strategy as “hostage rescue”, although diplomats and aid workers have expressed grave fears for the safety of trapped civilians.

Reports have said that Prabhakaran’s son, Charles Anthony, has escaped by submarine and it is possible that the leader may attempt the same. (ANI)
