Pilot’s final farewell: ‘devoted sports fan with a cheeky grin’

The funeral for one of the pilots who died in last week’s Airnorth training crash has heard that he loved his “office in the sky”.

Greg Seymon and Shane Whitbread were at the controls of an Airnorth Embraer Brasilia when it turned sharply just after take-off and crashed into woodland near Darwin Airport.

A packed St Mary’s Cathedral has heard from Greg Seymon’s parents, who said their son was an enthusiastic sportsman and devoted Hawthorn fan who moved back to Darwin four years ago to pursue his dream of becoming an airline pilot.

His mother said she would forever miss her son’s “cheeky grin”.

Ray Somerville from the Palmerston Golf Club delivered the eulogy, describing his friend as the best captain the club ever had.

Greg Seymon was 40-years-old and leaves behind two daughters and a son.

Shane Whitbread’s funeral will be held tomorrow.

A preliminary Australian Transport Safety Bureau report into the crash is due within a month.

Sandra Bullock’s take on Woods-Nordegren saga: ‘I would have kept hitting’

Washington, March 26 (ANI): Before Sandra Bullock knew her husband Jesse James had cheated on her, she had given a piece of advice to Tiger Woods’ wife following the golfer’s sex scandal.

Referring to reports that the sportsman’s spouse Elin had hit him with a golf stick, ‘The Blind Side’ star had said that if she were the Swede model, she wouldn’t have stopped the assault.

“If I were Elin … man, I would have hit a lot more than she did … I would have kept hitting!” Fox News quoted her as then telling The Insider.

She added: “She stopped. She was respectable. I’d get the baseball bat, I’d get everything out.”

Now, Bullock has found herself in Elin’s place, with exposure of James’ alleged multiple affairs. (ANI)

Woods can take Augusta heat: Montgomerie

London, Mar.25 (ANI): European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has backed Tiger Woods to thrive under the pressure when he returns from his four-month break from the game at the Masters next month.

Woods took time off from the game to rebuild his marriage after a late-night car crash outside his home in Florida sparked revelations of his infidelities, but Montgomerie is certain he will cope at Augusta.

“When I heard Tiger say that he is nervous to come back, that”s the first time I”ve ever heard him say those words,” Montgomerie told the Orlando Sentinel.

“So it”s very shrewd of him to have come back in the most controlled atmosphere possible. The patrons [at Augusta] are very knowledgeable and will respect him as the golfer that he is, and I think that there will be no issue at all. I think he”ll get over his nerves,” The Independent quoted him, as saying further.

“He”s the most focused sportsman I”ve ever known, and I think that he will adapt accordingly,” Montgomerie said. (ANI)

Betrayal overshadows Tiger’s return to golf

I’m not ready to cheer for Tiger Woods yet. The sense of betrayal is still too raw.

The greatest sportsman of his generation will return to his game’s most revered theatre, Augusta National, to contest The Masters. My overwhelming reaction to the announcement is that he doesn’t deserve to.

The contradiction is I don’t begrudge Woods the right to play golf. When a man makes such a mess of his personal life sometimes all that’s left is to plunge himself into his work.

Golf is a solitary game – a contest between a player and his temperament. If Woods can escape his self-inflicted torment on the fairways then he should.

But it’s the spectacle that shapes as unbefitting. It’s already being billed as the biggest event in the US since the Obama Inauguration. There’s an implied triumphalism in the return.

Of all that can be said of this tawdry affair the thought of attaching the word triumph is most distasteful. Yet if Woods is draped in his fifth green jacket winning at his first tournament since scandal overwhelmed his career such exaltations will doubtless flow.

I fear the context will be misrepresented. There is no redemption to be found on a golf course for Woods. This is not overcoming adversity. Nor fighting back from injustice.

Golf was never to blame for this mess. It was the collateral damage.

Woods exploited his lifestyle and status. He was premeditated in his duplicity.

It has been said Woods never asked for the pedestal on which he was placed. He didn’t cultivate the perfection he was afforded.

What nonsense.

The brand Tiger Woods was more carefully manicured than anything you’ll see on the legendary Augusta layout. The lengths to which his associates went to obscure his seedy double-life betray what was at stake.

This return seems hasty. Even unseemly. Particularly given the tone and content of last month’s apology. An event on which I stand in the minority.

Other than being overly solemn and too stately in its choreography, Woods’ conviction in accepting responsibility was compelling.

While I’m not naive enough to think he wrote the words unassisted he summed up precisely the great affliction of modern sport.

“I knew my actions were wrong. But I convinced myself that normal rules didn’t apply. I never thought about who I was hurting,” he said.

“Instead, I thought only about myself. I thought I could get away with whatever I wanted to. I felt that I had worked hard my entire life and deserved to enjoy all the temptations around me. I felt I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn’t have far – didn’t have to go far to find them.”

It brought to mind the scene at the climax of The Dark Knight:

Batman: Because you were the best of us! He wanted to prove that even someone as good as you could fall.

Two-Face: [bitter] And he was right.

For me, Woods doesn’t have to answer questions about the specifics of his sexual extravagances. That is a conversation between him and his wife. Only she needs to forgive him on that front. Or otherwise. He owes no debt to sate the voyeurs.

His apology to those who believed in him, in the lie, was required.

Watching Woods at the Australian Masters in November reminded me how pure sport can be.

Given the betrayal taking place at that very moment the bitterness is acutely felt.

So on what grounds could I cheer for him in a fortnight?

To hope for Woods would seem tantamount to excusing him. We can’t just pick up where we left off as if nothing has happened. The hurt can’t be soothed by booming drives and delicate wedges. The signature shots.

I tested this on YouTube. Reliving some of moments etched forever in a sports fan’s imagination complete with the sense of adoration once felt.

It served only as a reminder of what has been lost.

Woods concluded his apology: “I ask you to find room in your hearts to one day believe in me again.”

That day might come. But not yet. Not at The Masters.

Murray vows to come back better after US Open loss

New York, Sep.9 (ANI): British tennis star Andy Murray has said that he will come back a better player following his fourth-round straight-sets thrashing by Croat ace Marin Cilic.

“It’s the biggest disappointment of my tennis career. As an individual sportsman you have to take responsibility. I played poorly. I wasn’t myself and I’m disappointed I could not find a way back,” The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.

“I allowed him (Cilic) to dictate the play. Normally the return is the one part of my game which is always strong. I don’t know how long it will take me to get over it. I played well in the summer,” he added. (ANI)

Bilic blasts Terry over his remarks on Eduardo’s diving affair

London, Sep 6(ANI): Croatian coach Slaven Bilic has blasted England skipper John Terry over his comments about the Eduardo diving affair, and said that he has known Eduardo for years, and he does not dive intentionally.

“John Terry is not talking like that when Didier Drogba goes down for Chelsea. I am not saying Drogba is a diver. I adore him as a player, but I’m saying when they get a penalty they’re not accusing their own team-mates,” The Sun quoted Bilic, as saying.

“If anyone knows him (Eduardo) I know him. He is no diver. He is a good guy, a sportsman, a professional and a role model of fair play. Sometimes he waits for a contact. Maybe it wasn’t a penalty against Celtic but you can’t say there was no contact,” he added.

Croatian and Arsenal striker Eduardo was banned for two matches by UEFA for alleged simulation to win a penalty in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Celtic in a Champions League qualifier.

Terry had said that the ban on Eduardo was harsh, adding that he think that Eduardo had dived which was something that English players don’t do due to their inherent honesty.

Bilic further said that the attack on Eduardo may be potential mind games to put pressure on him before Croatia’s World Cup qualifier against England.

“I don’t care why John Terry did this but it’s all part of the game. If we’re talking about 100 per cent fair play it’s also not fair play from Terry to say something like that before the game if he wants to put pressure on the referee,” Bilic said.

“That would not be fair play in the same sense as what he was saying about Eduardo, accusing a fellow professional of these things,” he added. (ANI)

Warnie to celebrate 40th birthday at popular Melbourne bar

Melbourne, Sep.3 (ANI): Former Australian leg spinner Shane Warne is warming up for a large coming-of-age party in Melbourne with his wide variety of mates.

The eternally young, if slightly hairless, sportsman will reach his 40th birthday on Sunday week, but Warne is planning to celebrate a couple of days early with a big bash for celebrity mates in trendy South Yarra tomorrow week.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the cricket great has booked a Chapel St bar for the event.

Invitations have gone out to an extensive list of well-known identities, including TV’s Eddie McGuire, ex-boxer Jeff Fenech, poker player Joe Hachem and AFL stars Brendan Fevola and Aaron Hamill.

Warne and his ex-wife turned girlfriend Simone Callahan were spotted cruising around Brighton this week in the sportsman’s head-turning black Lamborghini Superleggera.

The pair has been low-key since she moved in with him last year. (ANI)

Arsenal to fight Eduardo’s ‘cheat’ ban

London, Sep 2 (ANI): Arsenal will fight to clear Eduardo’s name after UEFA branded him a cheat.

Europe’s football governing body banned the striker for two games after finding him guilty of “deceiving the referee” by diving to win a penalty during last week’s Champions League qualifier against Celtic.

Eduardo is banned for Arsenal’s first two Champions League games against Standard Liege and Olympiakos.

But the Gunners are convinced the Croat has not been given a fair hearing and are ready to appeal, The Sun reported.

“We are disappointed with UEFA’s decision. We believe it is imperative UEFA’s explanation for its decision provides clear and comprehensive standards that will be consistently enforced,” a club statement read.

Croatia boss Slaven Bilic last night slammed Eduardo’s dive ban as a disgrace.

Bilic, who ironically dived to get Laurent Blanc sent off in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, said: “This is a disgrace. We are talking about a player who is a role model of a sportsman. I simply cannot understand how he can be punished.” (ANI)

Muhammad Ali to make one last trip to Britain

London, July 3 (ANI): Boxing legend Muhammad Ali will make his last visit to the UK next month to bid his fans an emotional farewell, reports The Mirror.

Ali, 67, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, will make appearances at dinners held in his honour in London, Stoke and Manchester.

The plans were put in place after doctors told him he would not be well enough much longer to fly.

They warned the frail star that the trip could put him under enormous physical strain.

But Ali said: “The UK is very close to my heart. I want to visit one last time not only to raise awareness and funds for the Muhammad Ali Centre, but also to say goodbye in person to such a wonderful country and to all my friends and fans here, in case my health makes such a journey impossible in the future.”

He will also visit boxer Ricky Hatton’s gym in Manchester. The British light welterweight champ has described Ali as his inspiration.

Ali is hoping to raise support and funding for his various charities including the Muhammad Ali Centre, which opened in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky in 2005.

His wife, Lonnie, 52, will accompany him on the trip.

The three-time world heavyweight champion was last in the UK in December 1999 when he was named BBC Sportsman of the Century.

Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1984 at the age of 42 but has since ploughed his energies into travelling the world and raising money for charity. (ANI)

Paris Hilton hits back at media over Ronaldo rumours

Washington, June 25 (ANI): Paris Hilton has ranted against the media on her Twitter page over stories linking her to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that such reports are nothing but pure fiction.

The hotel heiress recently ended her six-month romance with baseball player Doug Reinhardt and was soon after photographed getting close to Ronaldo in a Los Angeles nightclub.

Since then, the multimillionaire socialite has been dogged by rumours of a romance with the sportsman, despite the star’s insistence that they are “just friends.”

And now Hilton has lashed back at the press and has accused the reporters of making up “vicious stories” about her lovelife.

“I’m really sick of reporters not only making up stories, but also inventing their own quotes that I never even said. It’s ridiculous! They have no credibility. They make up vicious stories, and even though they are so far from the truth, it’s still hurtful,” Contactmusic quoted Paris ranting on Twitter.com,

“They even invent relationships, if I even talk to a guy as a friend, they blow it so out of proportion and act like we are dating. So lame.

“Sorry for the venting, I’m just sick of all these stupid rumours. I’m trying to focus on my life and work and don’t need the extra stress.

“Plus, I want you all to know the truth. Don’t believe what you read, about 90 percent of it is pure fiction,” she added. (ANI)

Hughes is ready for anything, even failure

Sydney, May 19 (ANI): Australian opener Phillip Hughes has said that he is ready for anything, even failure.

Currently playing in England’s division two county cricket with Middlesex, Hughes will be the focus during the Ashes for both nations.

“He can’t have a small fall from where he is now. If he scores three ducks in the first two Tests there will be a huge inquiry, and if he scores runs, the English will talk about how stupid they were to let him play county cricket. We expected this, we planned for this – you plan for success,” Hughes’s mentor, Neil D’Costa, said from India last night.

The type of success Hughes is enjoying has not been witnessed since Bradman’s debut tour in 1930. Their figures are eerily similar after five innings: Hughes with 574 runs at an average of 143.5, Bradman with 556 at 185.33.

And then, after failing twice in one-dayers and feeling emotionally and physically drained, Hughes struck a majestic 119 from 112 balls in a limited-overs fixture at Lord’s on Sunday.

The venue, to host the second Ashes Test, will now be a comfortable one for the 20-year-old.

“None of this is happening by luck. To see a 20-year-old kid stop looking at what success is, and start looking at what the processes are … his processes and planning is phenomenal. Every time someone has a plan for Phil, we have already worked on combating that plan and we will have a play against it,” D’Costa said.

“As a professional sportsman, you cannot keep up this level of performance for 10 to 15 years. But when the runs do dry up, it won’t be for a lack of effort or dedication. I have never seen Phil work so hard on his game as he is now,” he said. (ANI)

Rebecca Loos all set to release tell-all tome about romance with Becks

London, May 19 (ANI): Rebecca Loos, who allegedly had an affair with David Beckham while she was his personal assistant, is all set to release a tell-all book, in which she’ll give out saucy details of her relationship with the soccer ace.

According to her pals, the saucy senorita is currently trying to sell her story to the highest bidder.

“Rebecca has been talking about releasing this book for four years,” the Daily Star quoted a friend as saying.

“She has been teasing the world that she will tell all about her life with David behind Victoria’s back.

“And now that she knows she’s got a little one on the way, Rebecca wants to make sure she and the baby are set for life.

“She wants to get the best deal possible with a publishing house before agreeing to release the book.

“We’re talking millions – after all, he is the biggest sportsman in the world and people will want to read about his behaviour while they worked together.?It is going to be explosive stuff and might make life for David and his wife a bit uncomfortable,” the pal added.

Recently, Rebecca, 31, gave a big blow to Beckham by announcing her pregnancy just hours before he came on as a substitute for his record-equalling 108th England cap in the defeat by Spain.

The sexy siren allegedly claimed that Becks bedded her while she worked as his PA six years ago. (ANI)

PCB hires ‘shrink’ to strengthen team’s mental resolve

Lahore, May 13 (ANI): Worried by reports of conflicts and the existence of two factions within the team, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has hired a psychologist to help strengthen the squad’s mental resolve ahead of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.

The PCB is organizing a conditioning camp in the hill resort of Bhurban from tomorrow (Thurday), where the newly appointed psychologist, Dr Maqbool Babri, would work with the team, The Daily Times reports.

“He will hold one-on-one sessions with the players and also conduct group therapy,” coach Intikhab Alam said.

Alam said the camp would help the players to perform better in pressure situation and improve their ability, as the Twenty20 version of the game requires cricketers to give their hundred percent even toughest conditions.

“I think sometimes it is the fear of failing that makes a sportsman crack under pressure. The idea is to improve the self-belief in our players so they can perform to their optimum abilities,” Alam added. (ANI)

Ballesteros says his brain tumor made him suffer like a dog

Madrid (Spain), May 7 (ANI): Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros says his brain tumor left him suffering like a dog.

The legendary golfer will start his fifth session of chemotherapy this week, but after fighting through four operations, a bout of depression and fears of going blind, Ballesteros says he is 90 per cent recovered – and even playing golf again.

“I have suffered like a dog but the fact I was a professional sportsman and used to competing and fighting helped me. The worst moment was when I returned home and realised my limitations. I couldn’t see from the left eye, I almost couldn’t walk,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.
“I was starting to think about the future and started feeling very afraid. I felt useless. At that moment there was a setback – I became depressed, for which I had treatment. It was like a race that doesn’t have a distance or a goal. Now I am perfect. I’m alive. I can do things. I speak, I can reason. I have had a lot of luck,” he added.
“I have already recovered 90 per cent, and I can do any kind of sport – running, swimming, rowing, and I am also hitting some short golf shots. I see everything in a different way. I appreciate everything more,” he said. (ANI)

Becks smitten by Hungarian nude model?

London, Apr 30 (ANI): David Beckham and Victoria’s strained marriage hit another roadblock after a nude model claimed that the footie ace made a play for her.

Blonde Mariann Fogarassy insists that the 33-year-old hunky sportsman has been emailing her with “private party” invites ever since they got close after an AC Milan match last week.

The sexy Hungarian has graced the cover of several magazines all over the world and is a successful glamour model.

She said that Becks was smitten when he spotted her last week after a match in Budapest between Inter Milan and a Hungarian team.

Mariann insisted that Becks had made it clear what he wanted after he “squeezed her elbow and smiled”.

“Beckham squeezed my elbow for a moment and smiled,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“Then I put my business card into his pocket. I knew he must have felt it. And in fact an email arrived today, saying that just in case I’d be in Milan next week, I’m invited to the club’s party. Luckily, I’ll be shooting in Milan next week,” she added.

However, Becks’ spokesperson dismissed the claims.

“There is no truth in this story. I was there and there was no interaction with this woman at the stadium,” said the rep.

“There is also no party in Milan. She is a fantasist seeking publicity,” he added.

The sportstar is no stranger to rumours that he has strayed behind Victoria’s back. The former Spice Girl has admitted how difficult it is constantly fighting off the desperate girls who keep throwing themselves at the England star.

Victoria is still fuming about his alleged affair with PA Rebecca Loos, 31 – again while the couple were living apart. (ANI)
