Dads enjoy less with kids than mums

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): Dads not only spend less time with their kids, they don’t even enjoy that time as much as mums do, revealed new research.

Twice as many fathers say they “sometimes or less often” enjoy spending time with their children as do mothers, according to a report by the Australian Institute of Family Studies.

AIFS research fellow and the author of ‘The Best Start: Supporting Happy, Healthy Childhoods’, Jennifer Baxter said that when fathers were asked whether they enjoyed spending time with their children, 28 per cent said they “always or almost always” did, compared with 40 per cent of mothers.

In addition, 21 per cent of dads said they “sometimes or less often” enjoyed time spent with their kids, compared with 11 per cent for mums.

“Dads often have that added pressure of long work hours,” News.com.au quoted her as telling The Australian.

“They”re there in the mornings when time is so rushed and at dinner when there”s so much going on, so that stress of combining work with the hard parts of the family day may be spilling over into their level of enjoyment,” added Baxter.

Baxter said that part of the answer to why dads are less satisfied could be that they are more honest about it than mothers.

“There”s a very strong ethos that mothers must love and care and nurture their children. . . while fathers might be more inclined to admit when things aren”t going well,” she said. (ANI)

Colosimo joins Aloisi at Heart

Socceroo and former Sydney FC star Simon Colosimo has signed a deal with new A-League club Melbourne Heart.

The 31-year-old, who signed a ‘multi-year’ deal, had been tipped to return to his home city after a short stint ahead of the World Cup with FC Seoul in South Korea fell through.

“Simon has a wonderful technical ability and will also provide fantastic composure in defence,” head coach John van’t Schip said.

“He is capable of playing the ball out of defence and also provides excellent tackling and organisational ability.”

Colosimo would be given every opportunity to force his way into the Socceroos squad for the World Cup, including spending time abroad if need be, van’t Schip said.

The Heart, who make their A-League debut next season, starting in August, earlier this week announced they had signed former Australian international striker John Aloisi.

Chastened Flintoff now happier dropping kids to school than getting Punter out

Dubai, Mar 27(ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, the swashbuckling hero of the cricket field and star of famous booze-fuelled escapades, has sobered up to enjoy time with his family and his new interest in horse racing in Dubai.

Flintoff admits that he has identified his responsibilities, and explains that dismissing Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is nothing compared to getting the kids to school on time.

“There are different challenges in life. As much as getting Ricky out or getting a few runs was good, I’m far happier taking my kids to school,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Flintoff, as saying.

“It’s far, far more rewarding to see my kids grow up as opposed to doing some of the dodgy celebrations at Edgbaston or Lord’s or wherever it may be,” he added.

The 32-year-old also believes that cricket has allowed him to understand what is good for him and how he should enjoy his life.

“The thing about the cricket I found is that you can go out on the cricket field in front of 20 to 100,000 people and milk it. It’s something I’ve enjoyed. The adrenaline starts, the excitement. It’s almost theatre and you go out there and perform,” Flintoff said.

“But the other side is that I’m quite happy going home and closing the door and not seeing anyone, just spending time with my family and doing normal things at home with my mates. Cricket has allowed me the best of both worlds,” he added.

Talking about his new interest in horse racing, Flintoff said that he owns racehorses with his manager Andrew Chandler and golfer Lee Westwood.

“I don’t know a great deal about the finer things of horse racing, however I enjoy the event and I enjoy the day out. It’s become something completely different to what I”ve been used to,” he said. (ANI)

Whitney Houston says MJ’s addiction mirrored her own drug past

Washington, Sep 16 (ANI): Whitney Houston has confessed that she was shocked to hear the news of Michael Jackson’s death, and even went on to relate her own struggle with drugs to the King of Pop’s addiction to painkillers.

In a candid interview to talk show queen Oprah Winfrey on Tuesday, the ‘I Will Always Love You’ hit-maker revealed sordid details of her drug past, and the breakdown of her marriage to Bobby Brown.

Houston admitted that she was stunned to hear of Jackson’s passing, and claimed that the ‘Thriller’ legend’s drug problems mirrored her own.

“(Jackson’s death was) devastating. I have so many good memories of spending time with him. I’ve known his family for so many years that I thought, ‘It can’t be true,’” Contactmusic quoted her as telling Winfrey.

“I just remember doing the (Jackson 30th) anniversary special and I remember looking at Michael and I remember looking at myself and I was getting scared looking at him. I was looking at myself. I don’t want it to be like this. Mike and I were very close,” she added. (ANI)

US Army Nurse reveals ‘humane’ side of Saddam Hussein

Washington, Sep. 11 (ANI): Saddam Hussein might be remembered as a brutal international criminal by the rest of the world; but to retired U.S. Army Nurse Robert Ellis, who spent more time with the dictator than any other American, he was a patient with a humane side.

Ellis worked as the senior American medical advisor at Baghdad’s Camp Cropper, where Hussein was held for eight months until his execution in December 2006, Fox News reports.

During this period, Hussein who went by the code name “Victor” grew close to his caregiver, who was known to him by the code name “Alice.”

The report quoted Ellis as saying that when he told Hussein that he had to return to St. Louis to see his dying brother, Hussein hugged him and said: “I will be your brother.”

Ellis’ new book, “Caring for Victor,” is a record of his time with the ruthless tyrant.

For Ellis, the mission caused serious internal conflict.

“I was always conflicted throughout the whole mission. My job was to keep these people alive and healthy so they could be interrogated,” he said.

Ellis says that by remaining “non-judgmental,” he was able to see another side of a human who was considered to be a brutal killer.

“By me spending time with him, I got to see his other side, a side that you don’t hear about. They play by a different set of rules over there,” he added. (ANI)

Hilary Swank says there was no ‘spark’ when she first met beau John Campisi

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Hilary Swank has said that there was no initial “spark” between her and new beau John Campisi because both of them were nursing a broken heart at the time, and their romance was completely “unexpected”.

Hilary was in the process of divorcing Chad Lowe when she started working with John in May 2006.

“There was no spark. What’s interesting is, there was never anything. It wasn’t until we were well into the dissipation of our respective relationships. Going through something so difficult at the same time, we became very good friends. We became closer and closer,” Contactmusic quoted Swank as telling Britain’s Hello! Magazine.

“It was so unexpected. We both recognised that if we were going to take the relationship to the next step, we could no longer work together,” she added.

While the 35-year-old star has no intention of marrying John, 41, in the near future, she hopes to start a family with him one day.

She even enjoys spending time with his son Sam, from a previous relationship.

“Sam’s a sweetheart. I most definitely want children. It’s something I’d like to do someday. And when the timing is right I’ll hopefully know it,” she said. (ANI)

Flower confident of Pietersen recovering before South African tour

London, Sep 3 (ANI): England cricket team director Andy Flower has expressed confidence that injured batsman Kevin Pietersen will make a full recovery and would return for the tour of South Africa.

Pietersen was forced out of the Ashes series following an Achilles injury, and has suffered a further setback after developing an infection in the scar tissue making him unavailable for the ODI series against Australia.

“He is still struggling a little with that wound in his Achilles. I spoke to him yesterday but I think we are confident in saying he will be back for South Africa,” The Independent quoted Flower, as saying.

Flower further said that he has advised Peitersen to use the time as a break from the busy schedule of an international cricket player.

“Sometimes you never know what is good or bad luck. It is enforced time away and he didn’t want it and we didn’t want it, but since it’s there and there is nothing anyone can do about it, I think he has got to make the most of it,” Flower said.

“I think that is what he is doing. He is spending time with his family and his wife and getting a break from the international game,” he added.

Flower also said that he was unsure about all-rounder Andrew Flintoff’s career, who had underwent a knee surgery after the Ashes series.

“If he can come back and play one-day international and Twenty20 cricket for us and bat at six or seven and bowl like he can bowl, that will make us a force to be reckoned with in one-day cricket,” Flower said.

“Whether he will or not I don’t know, I just hope he does,” he added. (ANI)

Peter Andre ‘gets legal advice to deal with Jordan’s lover’

London, Aug 27 (ANI): Singer Peter Andre is concerned about his children’s association with estranged wife Katie Price’s new lover Alex Reid and so he’s taking legal advice to deal with him, sources say.

The ‘Mysterious Girl’ hitmaker is apparently unhappy that the two kids- Junior, four, and Princess, two, are spending time with the cagefighter.

“As great as Alex may be with the children, he is not their father and never will be. As far as Peter is concerned, he is not an ideal father figure and shouldn’t be responsible for another man’s children – it’s not fair on anyone,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “The kids are going through a hard enough time as it is, trying to get to grips with why mummy and daddy no longer live under one roof. Peter simply wanted to make sure his lawyers were fully briefed on the situation, and are looking out solely for the children.”

There are also rumors that Reid is starring in a new porn film, which he insists is just a gangster flick.

The source said: “Pete’s number one concern is the welfare of his kids. He has nothing against Alex, but Peter has been rocked by the ongoing sordid revelations about Alex’s private life, and now his career.

“But the crux of the matter is that he and Kate only split up three months ago and she’s been dating Alex for a matter of weeks.”

While Peter arranged an emergency meeting with his legal team, Alex was busy playing happy families in Brighton with Peter’s four-year-old son, Junior. (ANI)

Malaysian model mum spared cane for beer drinking

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.24 (ANI): A woman who was to be caned here today for drinking beer in a bar, has been spared by religious authorities.

“The warrant cannot be executed,” Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, the head of enforcement for the state of Pahang’s Islamic Affairs Department.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, would have been the first woman to be caned in Malaysia.

According to the Courier Mail, the Muslim model said she would now plan a pilgrimage to Mecca, and seeking solace in prayer.

She was earlier sentenced to receive six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to drinking alcohol at a hotel nightclub last year.

Kartika cried when the verdict was handed down last month but in an interview at her home in a small Malay village, she was composed about her fate.

“Sometimes I feel sad and stressed as I have tarnished my family’s name. But now after spending time reading the Koran, I feel calm and am not afraid of being caned,” she said.

The part-time model and mother of two, who lives in neighbouring Singapore, had called for her punishment to be carried out in public. (ANI)

Blackberries can turn staff into round the clock workaholics

London, August 24 (ANI): People who use devices like Blackberries work an extra 15 hours a week because they constantly check e-mails, even after leaving for home.

This finding is based on a survey of 600 employees, which showed that such devices were turning people into workaholics by providing them with the ability to receive and send messages and work online, even when they were at home.

Pointing out that the working day was being extended to around 55 hours for many people, employment law firm Peninsula asked employers to ensure that their employees did not breach working time regulations.

“It is important for staff to spend quality time away from the office, spending time with the family, or undertaking recreational activities so that they keep a healthy work/life balance,” the Scotsman quoted Managing Director Peter Done as saying.

“Bosses should encourage staff not to work from home unless necessary. Inform staff that they should limit working from home. If they are happy to work away then ensure they agree to opt out of the maximum working week and have this signed.

Limit the extent to which employees are using their devices when they choose to do so; unrested employees will be less productive during the working day.

“The recession has forced everyone to become more productive and for those with access to work at home, this is an opportunity for them to catch up or get ahead.

Employees with smartphones are able to respond a lot quicker and also get themselves prepared for the working day ahead by checking their e-mail first thing.

“Employees should be encouraged to take appropriate rest breaks if they do choose to continue working out of hours. Having a well-rested employee with a good work/life balance is a lot more useful than a tired employee that put one too many hours in the night before,” Done added. (ANI)

Tom Cruise arrives back in Melbourne to be with family

Melbourne, Aug 9 (ANI): Tom Cruise, who has been away from his wife Katie Holmes and daughter Suri for over a month, has arrived back in Melbourne for an emotional reunion.

The actor, who flew out of Australia on July 7, landed at Essendon airport in a private jet at 2pm and headed straight for the Docklands studios where Holmes is shooting for ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’, reports the Herald Sun.

It was clear Cruise had deeply missed his family, spending time with them in their trailer before heading out to enjoy the sunshine.

Cruise and Holmes kept the reunion celebrations low-key, taking Suri for a trip to Flagstaff Gardens in the afternoon.

The trio turned heads as they played in the gardens and seemed unfussed about mingling with onlookers.

The family has already been to major attractions in Australia. (ANI)

Palin quit because she couldn’t take the heat, says Levi Johnston

Washington, July 14 (ANI): The ex-boyfriend of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s daughter, Levi Johnston, has claimed that Palin has decided to resign because she could not take the political heat anymore.

“She’s very smart. But, I just don’t think she can handle the stress level as governor-I don’t think she can handle it as president or vice president,” the Daily News quoted Johnston, as saying.

The 19-year-old high school dropout and former fiancé of Palin’s daughter Bristol, said on the “Today” show that he wouldn’t vote for Palin if she launched a presidential bid.

“If you would have asked that question a while back, I think I would have voted for her. But after what she has done now…I’d do just about anything for her. But I really don’t think I’d vote for her if she ran for president,” Johnston said.

Johnston also said he heard the vanquished GOP vice presidential nominee saying money was a primary motive.

“We had tons of offers coming in from everybody out there and just all kinds of ridiculous things. There’s been talk about it would be nice to just take the money and run,” he said.

Earlier, Palin’s spokeswoman publicly disputed Johnston’s commentary on her reasons for resigning.

“It is interesting to learn Levi is working on a piece of fiction while honing his acting skills,” the spokeswoman said.

On the show, Johnston also recalled his stay at the Palins’ last year, saying Palin would come home “stressed out” in the weeks following the election.

“She wasn’t as outgoing. I just didn’t see the spark in her eyes about, you know, being governor anymore. She was quiet, spending time in her room, he said. “We could tell something was wrong. She was sad, she lost. I mean, who wouldn’t be,” he said. (ANI)

“She may be an airhead, but she’s not about to run the risk of spending time in a Dubai prison, however unlikely that might seem,” the Daily Telegraph quoted a source as having told the Daily Express. (ANI)

After spending two wild nights with the footballer in Los Angeles, the hotel heiress is planning to go on a holiday in Europe.

And she is very excited about the holiday, not only because of her fascination for the Portuguese winger, but also due to her popularity in Europe.

“I am totally going to Madrid to see him. I love spending time in Europe. They get me there,” the Sun quoted Paris as telling after her racy encounter with Ronaldo in Hollywood.

Today is the happiest day of the year

London, June 19 : If you are feeling joyous today for no definite reason, then don”t be surprised, as today is the happiest day of the year, at least that”s what a researcher claims.

Dr Cliff Arnall of Brecon, Powys, used a special equation to find out that 19th June is the nicest day of the year: O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He.

To calculate a day”s happiness rating, former Cardiff University lecturer, 44, gave values to each of the symbols.

He added outdoors (O) to nature (N) multiplied by social interaction (S).

The expert then added childhood memories of summers (Cpm) divided by temperature (T) plus excitement about holidays (He).

According to the researcher, warmer summer days are more pleasant than gloomy winters, which, allows people to come out and socialize.

“People”s minds are on the credit crunch but it doesn”t take away from the equation”s primary factors, spending time with people you love and being outdoors in the warm weather,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“People may be less able to afford other leisure activities but it”s free to walk in the park or paddle in the stream,” he added.

Dr. Arnall also believes that money does not necessarily buy happiness.

“The most important things in our lives are our relationships – and no amount of money can buy that.

“I”ve spoken to miserable multi-millionaires and people who have no money but are very happy because they have amazing friends,” he added.

Distraught Susan Boyle shifted to ‘safe house’

London, May 30 (ANI): Susan Boyle has reportedly been shifted to a safe house as she prepares to perform in the Britain’s Got Talent finals.

Judge Piers Morgan revealed the Scottish church singer, 48, had thought of packing her bags and quitting the talent show following excessive media criticism.

Morgan said the singing sensation had become “distraught” and was presently spending time with one of her closest friends to beat the pressure.

“She had a rocky moment a couple of days ago when she woke up and saw some very negative headlines and suddenly felt the pressure of world attention,” The BBC quoted Morgan as saying on Radio 5 Live’s Victoria Derbyshire show.

“You have to remember this is someone who has gone from complete anonymity to global stardom in the space of six weeks.

“It’s understandable. People should give her a bit of slack. She’s 24 hours from the biggest day of her life and she’s starting to feel the heat,” he added.

Morgan also revealed that Susan, who shot to overnight stardom with her jaw-dropping performance of the Les Miserables song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ on the show, had been struggling to cope with the pressure.

He added: “She is very distraught, to the extent where she packed her bags and was going to leave the show. She just didn’t see the point of continuing if every time she picked up the newspapers there was another avalanche of abuse.” (ANI)

Orangutans mistreated in Indonesian zoos

Jakarta – Zoos in Indonesia are mistreating endangered orangutans, forcing the great apes to live in cages and depriving them of adequate water and food, a conservation group said Wednesday.

The Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) said its study showed that most zoos in five major Indonesian cities locked up orangutans in cages instead of keeping them in more spacious enclosures.

Many of the orangutans observed showed symptoms of mental stress such as banging themselves against objects, throwing up and eating their vomits, and spending time lying down or sitting, said Luki Wardhani, a researcher for the group.

“They don’t get adequate access to water, don’t interact with each other and live in cages without playing facilities,” she said.

The COP said the orangutans were mostly used as objects of amusement for visitors.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature estimates there are about 50,000 orangutans in Indonesian and Malaysian forests. (dpa)
