Man U still in hunt for Karim Benzema

London, May 11 (ANI): Manchester United has still not given up hope of getting French striker Karim Benzema.

United boss Alex Ferguson lost out in his first attempt to sign the 22-year-old last summer, when he was outbid by Real Madrid.

Benzema made a 31 million pounds switch from Lyon. But he has been a flop for the Spanish giants, who are now ready to sell for around 25 million pounds.

The French striker has started only in 14 La Liga games this season and scored just eight league goals, The Sun reports.

United’s owners, the Glazers, are desperate to make a big-name signing to silence some of the opposition to their reign.

Nemanja Vidic could be used as a 10 million pounds makeweight in a Benzema deal. (ANI)

Chelsea, Man City in a race to get ace striker Torres

London, May 11 (ANI): Chelsea is all set to match Manchester City in order to get Spanish striker Fernando Torres this summer.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has been given the go-ahead to bid for 50 million pounds-rated Liverpool striker Torres.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “If it was good for the club then we can make an exception to buy a marquee player.”

“We have to challenge for trophies. We have a good squad and don’t feel we are required to spend a huge amount.

“It’s a balancing act between keeping to our strategy of trying to become self-sufficient and improving the team,” The Sun quoted Gourlay, as syaing.

“However, we want to let our on-field success drive our commercial income and any decision about signings will be made by Ancelotti,” he said.

“There is a balance to be had between young players coming through from the academy and those players that we might sign,” Gourlay added. (ANI)

Spanish Grand Prix tyre burst nixes Hamilton”s F-One champion hopes

London, May 10 (ANI): Lewis Hamilton”s bid for the Formula One title this year suffered a huge blow when he crashed out of the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 2008 champ looked set for a superb second place when the left front tyre of his car burst six miles from the home stretch in Barcelona.

“I was just cruising to the finish line. I don”t know what happened, but just felt something go. I got a bit around the third corner and was thinking maybe I could nurse it back but then the tyre blew and it was impossible,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“I couldn”t believe it – and there was nothing I could do to stop. It happened so fast and I was off into the wall. It”s my third or fourth tyre blowout in my career. More than most have in their whole lifetime,” he added.

He said: “It would have been great points for me. I would have been right back in the championship battle.” (ANI)

Button claims Schumacher’s move at Spanish Grand Prix was complete bull

London, May 10 (ANI): Formula One champion Jenson Button has criticized ex-champion Michael Schumacher for allegedly using unfair means while taking him on in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

“I didn’t really know where Michael was on the outside of me. He turned in and, if I hadn’t backed out of it, we would have crashed. He didn’t really give me a lot of room. There you go. You’d think with his experience he would know. It wasn’t really the right move,” the Daily Express quoted Button, as saying.

Button was less than impressed by that initial move, although it showed that Schumacher is returning to his old style and should not be underestimated now that he has a Mercedes built to his liking.

“It’s tough to overtake here and Michael’s not silly. He knows where to put his car on a track like this and you’re not going to overtake him. He was putting it on the inside, and I couldn’t pass on the outside because he just pushed me wide every time. He didn’t make a mistake, so it was very frustrating,” Button said.

Veteran German racer Mark Webber emerged the winner. (ANI)

Spanish face transplant man goes public

London, May 5 (ANI): A Spaniard who had one of the world”s first face transplants has unveiled his face to the world.

The patient named only as Rafael appeared in public to thank the donor and surgeons who operated on him.

Rafael, 34, was the third person in Spain and the tenth in the world to receive a partial face transplant, reports The Sun.

He spoke with difficulty at a Press conference at the hospital in Seville, Spain, where he had undergone the 30-hour surgery in January.

Quiros beats Morrison in playoff to win Spanish Open

Spain’s Alvaro Quiros claimed his fourth European Tour victory when he defeated Britain’s James Morrison in a sudden-death playoff for the Spanish Open title on Sunday.

Both players had finished a stroke ahead of the Real Club field on 11-under-par 277, Quiros carding a closing two-under 70 and Morrison coming from six strokes behind the third-round lead with a 67.

A safe par on the first extra hole, the 18th again, earned Quiros the first prize of $440,000 dollars after Morrison found water with his approach to double-bogey.

The pair had finished a shot ahead of the overnight leader, Britain’s Mark Foster, and Alejandro Canizares of Spain and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin.

Foster led by three strokes overnight and was still ahead by two at the turn but the Englishman’s putter betrayed him over the closing holes.

Quiros’s win was reward and justification for supporting his home championship instead of warming up at Quail Hollow for next week’s Players Championship in the United States.

UK strip club axed for keeping schoolgirl, 14, as lap dancer

London, Mar 20 (ANI): A strip club in Britain has been stripped off its licence after it was revealed that it had a 14-year-old schoolgirl performing lap dances.

After it emerged that the Shadow Lounge in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset allowed the girl to put on shows for leering men and strip for private dances, councillors decided to shut it down until further investigations.

The girl is back at school and said the incident has “ruined her life” after receiving a barrage of abuse.

“I was told I could pick my own song to dance to and that I should chat to some of the men,” the Sun quoted the girl as saying.

“I was so drunk that I didn’t know what I was doing. I have had 151 text messages from people saying they are going to attack me and most of my friends have turned their back on me.

“We shouldn’t have been let in. I do regret it,” she stated.

The club’s Spanish-born owner Jesus Rodriguez-Casas claims he was duped into letting the youngsters in after they produced fake ID.

North Somerset District Council had an application from police for the club’s licence to be suspended.

“We have acted swiftly to prevent any further child protection issues occurring,” councillor Felicity Baker added. (ANI)

Ronaldo’s insatiable appetite for major Championship League titles

Madrid, Aug 28(ANI): Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo reckons that while the Champions League is the biggest tournament to win in all club competitions, he also dreams of winning the Spanish League.

“I have always admired the Spanish league and dream of winning it one day. When I retire I want to look back and say that I have won both English and Spanish titles, the Champions League and hopefully more international titles,” The Sun quoted Ronaldo, as saying.

Ronaldo also said that he is ready to make up for his last season’s Champions League heartbreak with Manchester United by winning the competition this season with Real Madrid.

“Football doesn’t always go as you would like, but it does still bother me that we lost that game,” Ronaldo said.

“The only thing I am not happy about in my final year was that we could not win the Champions League final again, but I did all I could for Manchester United,” he added.

Ronaldo further said that Barcelona were a force last season and they won the Champions League as they exploited their chances.

“You have to respect Barcelona because they won three big titles last season and that says a lot about their strength, but I don’t think they were better than us (Man U). They were just more efficient when they got their chances,” he said. (ANI)
