The eyes of more than Texas are upon Rick Perry

Washington (CNN) — The stars have aligned for Rick Perry to enter the 2012 presidential race.

Now all eyes turn to Austin, as Republicans wonder whether the swaggering Texas governor will actually take the plunge.

Perry, the longest-serving governor in Texas history, boasts a national profile among Republicans and Tea Party activists, a network of deep-pocketed donors and a track record of creating jobs in the midst of a recession.

The implosion of Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign on Thursday — an upheaval that saw the former House speaker’s entire senior staff abandon what critics saw as a sinking ship — left two of Perry’s closest advisers, David Carney and Rob Johnson, without a candidate.

The sudden availability of his top advisers combined with the unsettled nature of the Republican presidential field has left the door wide open for Perry to step onto the national stage.

“Why wouldn’t he run?” asked Mark McKinnon, a former George W. Bush adviser and longtime Perry observer. “One of the only things holding him back was two key members of his team were with Gingrich. And now that’s no longer a problem.”

McKinnon said, “There’s a huge gap in the Republican field right now, and as a former six-man football player, Rick Perry knows how to run to the hole.”

While Perry has long been the subject of presidential buzz, the speculation began anew last month when he told reporters at a bill signing in May that he would “think about” running after the state concludes its legislative business.

The regular session ended last month, but Perry convened a special 30-day session to deal with budget matters and immigration legislation that won’t finish until the end of this month.

Meanwhile, Perry and his political team have been flooded with messages of encouragement in recent weeks, a deluge that’s only picked up in the wake of the Gingrich spectacle.

Multiple legislators in the pivotal early primary state of South Carolina recently reached out to Perry and asked him to consider running, CNN has learned.

And after repeated efforts to contact Perry’s team, a leading Tea Party activist in Iowa said he was finally able to get through to a political adviser on Friday to talk about a potential visit to the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

Ryan Rhodes, the chairman of the Iowa Tea Party, said he spoke with one of Perry’s aides about the possibility of joining up with an 18-day statewide bus tour he is organizing. Five GOP presidential candidates are scheduled to appear at stops along the tour.

“I was assured that they appreciate any offers to come to Iowa, but they said the governor is in the same place in his decision as he was before,” Rhodes said of his conversation. “They said he won’t make a decision until the session is done.”

That message is consistent with what Perry’s office has been saying publicly — that any decision about the presidential race will come only after Perry takes care of official state business.

“He is thinking about it, but he is thinking about a lot of issues,” said Mark Miner, the governor’s communications director.

Miner brushed aside the White House buzz but said it’s understandable that Republicans would want Perry to run, because Texas, with its business-friendly climate, has weathered the recession better than most states.

“He is conservative, fiscally responsible governor that has a successful record,” he told CNN. “There is always going to be talk about he running for higher office because of success he has had.”

Despite the denials coming out of the governor’s office, veteran political observers in Texas have detected an unmistakable change in Perry’s tone about the race, stoking further speculation about his plans.

For years, Perry would act “exasperated” when asked about his White House ambitions, according to Jason Embry, the capitol bureau chief for the Austin American-Statesman.

Not anymore.

“When team started saying he had no intention of running, instead of saying that he was not running, it was an important pivot that none of us took lightly,” Embry told CNN. “And then he started saying he was focused on the legislative session, which was a far less strident denial than he had given in the past. And then, of course, in late May he said he was going to think about it. So there has clearly been an evolution.”

Perry-watchers say not to expect an announcement anytime soon. The governor would presumably have to huddle with his advisers and donors to plot out a campaign strategy.

But senior Democrats are at least taking the prospect of a Perry campaign seriously.

“I think absolutely there is a path to victory for him on the Republican side,” said one Democratic strategist familiar with the Obama campaign’s thinking.

The strategist predicted that Perry could appeal to social conservatives and Tea Party activists in Iowa and South Carolina but might face problems in New Hampshire.

If Perry manages to win the nomination, the strategist said, he would be haunted by his infamous 2009 suggestion that Texas might secede from the United States in the face of federal overreach.

“It would certainly be an interesting campaign, running against somebody who is running for president of the United States who had previously said he’d consider seceding from it,” the Democrat said.

Obama becomes first US President to be called ‘a liar’ in Congress

London, Sep 10 (ANI): US President Barack Obama became the first president to be called ‘a liar’ in front of a joint session of Congress by a Republican senator.

South Carolina senator Joe Wilson pointing angrily at the President, blurted at the top of his voice: “You lie!” when Obama was addressing the Congress on health care.

But about half way through his 40-minute address, Obama certainly became the first president in to be called a liar, The Telegraph reports.

The president was dispelling a list of myths and “bogus claims” spread by opponents of his plan, when he denied the assertion that his proposed reforms would not provide health insurance to illegal immigrants.

Wilson’s outburst prompted cries of “Shame!” from the Democratic benches, while the president looked startled and Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House.

First Lady Michelle Obama, watching from the public gallery, shook her head in dismay. Even the Republican colleague of Wilson left patted his arm to calm him down.

Later, Wilson apologized for heckling and calling President Barack Obama ‘a liar’.

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the Health Care Bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility,” Politico quoted Wilson, as saying. (ANI)

Wilson apologises for calling Obama ‘a liar’

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): South Carolina Republican Joe Wilson has apologized for heckling and calling President Barack Obama ‘a liar’.

The comment from Wilson could be heard throughout the House chamber in response to Obama’s remark that his health insurance plan would not extend benefits to illegal immigrants.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before. We do not invite the president of the United States into the House of Representatives and hurl insults,” said Republican Earl Pomeroy.

According to Wilson’s office, he called the White House after the speech to apologise to Obama, speaking with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

The 62-year-old Wilson, who was elected to the House in 2001, previously found himself in the spotlight for attacking 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry over his 1971 testimony criticizing the Vietnam War. (ANI)

Gecko’s tail has a mind of its own

Washington, September 9 (ANI): A new study has found that the gecko tail literally has a mind of its own, as it exhibits not only rhythmic but also complex movements, including flips, jumps and lunges, after it is shed.

Anthony Russell of the University of Calgary (U of C) and Tim Higham of Clemson University in South Carolina carried out the study.

Geckos and other lizards have long been known for their incredible ability to shed their tails as a decoy for predators, but little is known about the movements and what controls the tail once it separates from the lizard’s body.

Although one previous study has looked at movement of the tail after it is severed, no study up to this point has quantified movement patterns of the tail by examining the relationship between such patterns and muscular activity.

“What we’ve discovered is that the tail does not simply oscillate in a repetitive fashion, but has an intricate repertoire of varied and highly complex movements, including acrobatic flips up to three centimetres in height,” said Russell, a biological sciences professor at the U of C.

“An intriguing, and as yet unanswered, question is what is the source of the stimulus is that initiates complex movements in the shed tails of leopard geckos,” said Higham.

“The most plausible explanation is that the tail relies on sensory feedback from the environment. Sensors on its surface may tell it to jump, pivot or travel in a certain direction,” he added.

The ability of an animal, or part of an animal, to move without the active control of higher centres in the brain is well known, but this generally occurs as a result of traumatic physical injury.

Tails of lizards are shed under the animal’s own control.

Because of this, the behaviour of the shed part has adaptive evolutionary importance and its actions are programmed to assist in the owner’s survival.

The movements are coordinated by the part of the spinal cord that is housed in the tail.

The isolated tail serves as a vehicle for studying the ways that nerves and muscles act together to generate controlled but complex outputs in the absence of the influence of the brain.

The new study shows that the signals responsible for movements of the shed tail begin at the very far end of the tail, indicating that there is a control centre located there that is likely overridden by higher centres until the tail is shed, at which point its potential is realized. (ANI)

King of Pop Michael Jackson gets royal send off

Los Angeles, July 8 (DPA) From the fleet of Bentley limousines that transported his family, to the endlessly fawning comments of television anchors throughout the blanket coverage, Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop, got a send-off Tuesday that was fit for royalty.

As the 30-vehicle convoy left the Forest Lawns Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, it drove past dozens of broadcast trucks, with several news helicopters buzzing overhead. Police closed the 101 Freeway to allow the procession easy passage to the public memorial in downtown Los Angeles. Traffic in the opposite direction also slowed to a virtual standstill as commuters halted their journey to catch a glimpse of the hearse.

As the procession drew up to the Staples Centre a high-flying plane drew a huge heart in the blue Los Angeles sky, while fans screamed, “We love Michael!” TV crews were set up on dozens of large podiums close to the entrance, as the country’s most distinguished news anchors, from Katie Couric to Brian Williams, led the coverage.

“We made so many sacrifices to see him one last time. We sold everything we had in our house,” said one fan, who journeyed for three days on buses from South Carolina to southern California to attend the memorial, even though she had no ticket.

Inside the arena, a large royal blue stage was erected at a basketball court that usually plays host to the Los Angeles Lakers. The backdrop featured a photo of a smiling Jackson looking up towards the sky and the words: “In loving memory of Michael Jackson King of Pop. 1958-2009.”

A lavish gold-coloured programme featured pictures of Jackson with presidents, political leaders and showbiz stars, and tributes from his family and friends.

The elaborate service began with Smokey Robinson reading tribute letters from the likes of Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela. The backdrop then changed to an image of stained glass windows as Jackson’s casket, laden high with flowers, was wheeled in. His pallbearers were each wearing a single, sequined glove in a tribute to one of Jackson’s signature styles, as a gospel choir sang.

The elite of pop music performed tributes for Jackson, from Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder to John Mayer and Usher.

“The title King of Pop is not big enough for him,” said Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown who discovered Jackson and guided his early career. “I think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived.”

But for some in the entertainment world, the endless fawning and hagiography was a little much. Media columnist Brian Lowry could barely wait for the event to end as he blogged it live for entertainment trade paper Variety. He juxtaposed the reverential tones with the bizarre behaviour that Jackson often displayed and which “makes the worshipful tone characterizing much of this coverage even more questionable.”

African American activist Al Sharpton, in his eulogy for Jackson, tried to explain the pop star’s mass appeal. “You would have to understand the journey of Michael to understand what he means to us,” said Sharpton.

“When Michael started it was a different world but because he kept going, because he refused to let other people decide his boundaries, he opened up the whole world. It was Michael Jackson who brought blacks and whites and Asians and Latinos together. It was MJ who made us say ‘We Are The World’ and ‘Feed the Hungry’.”

Only one reader of Variety, commonly regarded as the Bible of the US entertainment industry, bothered to post a comment – and he obviously did not agree with Sharpton. “A grotesque and vulgar display,” noted reader Jack Henry of the ceremony. “The US is not only financially bankrupt, but morally and culturally bankrupt as well. God help us.”

Argentine mistress of Governor Sanford admits being woman in his life

New York, June 30 (ANI): The Argentine mistress of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, Maria Belen Chapur, has admitted that she was the woman who drew the rising GOP star away from the country for six days earlier this month.

Aides to the Republican governor had explained his absence by saying that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

She issued a short statement to Buenos Aires’ C5N TV station, tacitly admitting to the affair.

“Of my private life I won’t speak, not now or in the future. It’s been made public enough already, a fact that causes me terrible discomfort,” the statement said.

Chapur, a 41-year-old mother of two, said she had firm suspicions of who hacked into her e-mail and leaked steamy exchanges between her and the governor, who had been a rising star in the GOP.

The State newspaper of Columbia, S.C., obtained the e-mails in December, the Daily News reports.

“Since I don’t have sufficient proof and live in a state of law, I’m obligated to keep their identity anonymous. I am not the judge of anyone; I leave all that in the hands of God,” Chapur’s statement said.

Sanford’s e-mails to Chapur have fascinated both hopeless romantics and serious politicos alike.

If reports are to be believed, the emails are colorful, descriptive, and unabashedly romantic, at times to the point of being schmaltzy and embarrassing.

“Do you really comprehend how beautiful your smile is? Have you been told lately how warm your eyes are and how they softly glow with the special nature of your soul?” the Politico quoted Sanford as having written.

In between the mushy parts, the two of them write about everyday events.

While Maria talks about taking a lazy day trip and reading an Alan Greenspan book, Sanford writes about meetings in New York, the National Governor’s Conference and an invitational with then-presidential candidate Senator John McCain.

According to reports, the letters give the impression that Sanford was a real romantic with a knack for writing.

“The most cherished gift a lover can give and receive is a love letter from the heart,” says romance coach Leslie Karsner, who sells prewritten love letters through a website called ‘Love Letters Now’. (ANI)

Eliot Spitzer claims he’s not like Mark Sanford

New York, June 29 (ANI): Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer says that he is not similar to South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford.

Spitzer had resigned in March last year, after it was reported that he was a client of a prostitution ring under investigation by the federal government.

On the other hand, on June 24, 2009, Sanford resigned as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, when it was revealed he was in an extramarital affair with an Argentinian, Maria Belen Chapur.

And thus, at a lunch meeting with LMDC executive director Avi Schick at Solo in the Sony Building on Madison, Spitzer was overheard as saying that there’s a huge difference in what he did and what Sanford has done.

“I didn’t fall in love with any of them,” the New York Post quoted him as telling Schick.

Besides, Spitzer didn’t use any taxpayer money on his trysts, while Sanford is reimbursing the state about 12,000 dollars for travel expenses to Buenos Aires. (ANI)

South Carolina Gov. Sanford’s love letters to mistress show his knack for writing

Washington, June 28 (ANI): South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s e-mails to his Argentine mistress Maria have fascinated both hopeless romantics and serious politicos alike.

While Maria talks about taking a lazy day trip and reading an Alan Greenspan book, Sanford writes about meetings in New York, the National Governor’s Conference and an invitational with then-presidential candidate Sen. John McCain.

According to reports, the letters give the impression that Sanford was a real romantic with a knack for writing.

“The most cherished gift a lover can give and receive is a love letter from the heart,” says romance coach Leslie Karsner, who sells prewritten love letters through a website called ‘Love Letters Now’.

“It’s very romantic, especially with forbidden love. If you take the politics out of it, it’s the story of a man whose heart was captured and he was willing to run the risk of being caught.

“He’s good at keeping her on the edge. He’s good at encouraging future discussions. He’s a busy governor, so the moments they have together are fleeting, and these letters become that much more valuable,” Karsner adds.

When asked what makes the letters so effective, psychologist and relationship coach Anne-Renee Test notes that Sanford and Shapur are about their emotions in the letters.

Test points out that Sanford even compares Shapur’s affections to the unconditional love he felt from his mother.

“They talk about the intensity of teenage love, which is extremely powerful, very real, and it can feel very intense like this. That’s the same intensity you read in these letters. They’re beautiful. I’m jealous,” says the expert.

Sex has been indirectly mentioned, but not detailed, in the letters.

Sanford writes: “The erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light – but hey, that would be going into the sexual details.”

Maria responds: “I never gave you sexual details but you don’t need to. . .close your eyes and just remember. I’ll do the same.”

The one aspect of their letters that may appear negative is that both the governor and his mistress acknowledge that they may never see one another again.

“Although I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to meet again, this has been the best [thing] that has happened to me in a long time,” she writes, noting later that the situation is likely “hopelessly impossible” and that the love letters may pose a danger to his career.

“I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship…but it was all safe. Where we are is not,” he wrote. (ANI)

What made Jacko a legend

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): Remembering the ebb and flow of late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s career, the critics are busy jotting down facts that made the singer a legend.

And, now, a report shedding light on such facts reveals that Jackson’s Billie Jean made him the first black artist whose video to have his video broadcast on MTV.

Published by the China Daily, the report reveals that another reason behind why Jackson was so famous was the fact that he owned the rights to the South Carolina State Anthem South Carolina on My Mind, recorded by Hank Martin and Buzz Arledge.

Jackson was so popular that his waxwork features in five Madame Tussauds museums across the world. Only Elvis Presley and Madonna have more Tussaud figures-they have six each.

The report reckons that Jackson’s total lifetime earnings from royalties, solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements were about 500 million dollars.

Jackson was also famous for receiving a Presidential Humanitarian Award from Ronald Reagan in 1984, for his support of charities helping people overcome alcohol and drug abuse.

He was also know for losing a fight against fellow 50 year old Madonna on MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch.

Three of Jackson’s albums-Bad, Dangerous and Thriller-are among the bestsellers of all time. Thriller remains the biggest-selling album since records began.

To date, over 300 million copies of his records have been sold worldwide.

Jackson was also known for wearing his trademark black armband to remind fans of the suffering of children around the world.

His favourite superhero was Morph from the X-Men.

He picked up his iconic moonwalk moves, which he debuted at the Motown 25th Anniversary show in 1983, from streetdancers he had spotted performing outside a hotel.

Little Richard thought that Jackson would be the right choice to play him in a biopic.

Jackson’s most famous pets were Bubbles the chimp and Ben the rat.

He, however, also befriended a ram called Mr Tibbs, a python called Crusher, and Louie the llama.

The fact that a French Jackson aficionado committed suicide in 1984 after his mother refused to allow him to undergo surgery to look like the star shows how popular he was among his fans.

In 1984, a U.S. library accused Jackson of owing it over one million dollars in overdue book fines. Officials said that they would scrap the fines if he returned the books autographed. (ANI)

Governor Sanford’s wife warned him not to travel to Argentina

Columbia, June 27 (ANI): Jenny Sanford, the wife of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who has admitted to an extramarital affair, has said she had warned him not to travel to Argentina to visit his mistress.

“He was told in no uncertain terms not to see her,” Jenny said.

According to the Politico, when Mark Sanford informed his wife that he would be leaving the state, Jenny had strictly warned him not to visit the woman in Argentina and said she was shocked to find out that he had.

Following reports of Sanford’s governorship being put into doubt by extended disappearances, the First Lady of South Carolina said Mark’s career is no more of any significance to her.

“His career is not a concern of mine. He’s gonna have to worry about that, and I’m going to worry about my family and the character of my children,” she added.

Earlier, after having been absent from South Carolina for several days, Mark had admitted to an adulterous affair with a woman from Argentina identified as Maria Belen Chapur.

Jenny and her husband have four sons, Marshall, Landon, Bolton and Blake. (ANI)

Rising GOP star Sanford admits being unfaithful to wife

Washington, June 25 (ANI): South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who rose through the Republican ranks over the past decade, from congressman to governor to potential 2012 presidential candidate, has tearfully admitted having an affair with an Argentine pen pal, diminishing his future GOP chances.

Sanford, after pulling off a bizarre vanishing act this week, reappeared on Wednesday to admit that he was having an affair that involved secret visits with his mistress in Argentina.

South Carolina’s Governor arrived home from a secret six-day trip to Buenos Aires to tearfully admit he has been having an affair with an Argentine pen pal.

“I spent the last five days of my life crying in Argentina,” Sanford said at an extraordinary, rambling press conference in Columbia, S.C.

Sanford, who was until this week one of the GOP’s most promising rising stars, resigned as chairman of the Republican Governors’ Association but did not step down from his job running South Carolina.

His staff initially told reporters that he had left town on Thursday to go hiking on the Appalachian Trail, but the Governor returned on Wednesday morning on a flight from Argentina.

“I’ve let down a lot of people. That’s the bottom line. I’ve been unfaithful to my wife,” Fox News quoted Sanford, as saying.

E-mails obtained by The State, a South Carolina newspaper, capture deeply personal exchanges between the Governor and the woman, whom the newspaper called only by her first name, Maria.

“My heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul,” Sanford wrote in one of the e-mails, dated last summer.

The newspaper said a McClatchy correspondent reached Sanford’s mistress, but she declined to be interviewed.

Sanford’s wife, Jenny, who apparently had known about the affair for five months, had asked him to leave home two weeks ago and to stop talking to her and their children. In a written statement, she said the couple needed a trial separation, but that her husband had since “earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.”

The Governor apologized profusely to his family, his staff and the people of South Carolina. He said he’s let down his four sons in a “profound way,” though he said his wife had known about the affair for five months and they were trying to work through it. (ANI)

Bale praised by real life FBI agent’s family for Public Enemies role

Washington, Jun 24 (ANI): ‘The Dark Knight’ star Christian Bale has earned himself praise from the family of the real life FBI agent he portrayed in his new movie ‘Public Enemies’.

Bale, 35, plays Agent Melvin Purvis, the man who tracked down legendary 1930s bank robber John Dillinger, who is portrayed by Johnny Depp in the movie.

Bale spent time with Purvis’ relatives in preparation for the role and even visited the late law enforcer’s grave with his son Alston, who was delighted with the on-screen results.

“Bale had my father’s mannerisms and accent down to the exact detail. He is a superb actor. He wanted to see my family home in South Carolina. We went to the cemetery to see my father’s grave,” Contactmusic quoted Alston as saying. (ANI)

US school sets world record with 27 hours of drumming

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): A group of US school students have made a new world record by drumming for 27 hours and 23 seconds.

Students at Rock Hill High School in South Carolina began the drum roll at 5pm on May 8 and continued to play until around 8pm the next day.

The 27 musicians lent a helping hand in raising 3,600 dollars which will now be spent on new equipment for the school band, reports the China Daily.

Percussion director Michael Skellett told a local newspaper: “It’s been a huge success. Plus, we got to break a world record in the process, which is cool.”

One student, Jason Piers, piped the previous individual world record by two minutes but his name may not officially enter the Guinness since he did not complete the paperwork in advance.

Piers, who kept the drum roll on for four hours and 10 minutes, revealed he would appeal for his efforts to be officially recognised since the video footage of the attempt existed.

He added: “If not, I’ll do it next year.” (ANI)

Exercise cuts breast cancer death risk by three times

Melbourne, Mar 23 (ANI): A new study by University of South Carolina researchers has found that women who work out are three times less likely to die of breast cancer.

The study indicated that aerobically fit women are three times less likely to die of the disease than those who seldom exercise.

For the study, researchers examined 14,000 women who were given preventive medical exams and treadmill tests at the Cooper Clinic in Houston from 1970-2001.

At the time of their exams, the women, ages 20 through 83, had no history of breast cancer.

Based on the treadmill tests, the women’s fitness was classified as low, moderate or high.

Researchers compared the fitness levels of the 68 women in the study group who had died of breast cancer through 2003.

“Women in the study’s lowest fitness category were nearly three times more likely to die from breast cancer than women in the most fit group,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Dr. Steve Blair, a USC researcher and a past president of the American College of Sports Medicine, as saying.

To reach the moderate fitness category, women need to exercise about 150 minutes per week. High fitness translates to 300 minutes per week.

“Finding a strong association between fitness, which can be improved by the relatively inexpensive lifestyle intervention of regular physical activity, such as walking, is exciting,” Blair said.

The study has been reported in the April issue of the scientific journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. (ANI)

Being a woman in Sharia-dominated Pak can be unnerving: US

Washington, Mar.12 (ANI): The United States Congress, and particularly the Senate, feels that being a woman in a Pakistan dominated by the Sharia can be an unnerving experience.

When Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Democrat, asked the Director of the Defence Intelligence Agency, Major General Michael Maples “If you were a woman in Pakistan, would that be unnerving to you?”, Maples replied “Absolutely sir it would.”

He further went on to say that it would be unnerving to the United States “from the standpoint of what that means to other militants.”

“And we’re very concerned about that,” he concluded. (ANI)

Ahead of challenging Obama, Jindal rehearses on teleprompter!

Louisiana (US), Feb.24 (ANI): Fast-talking Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal plans to rehearse the Republican Party’s response to President Barack Obama’s address to Congress with a teleprompter today before delivering it live from the governor’s mansion in Baton Rouge.

According to the Washington Post, this is the grandest opportunity of Jindal’s young political life, and he is banking on impressing Americans just as he wowed the Rhodes panel when seeking its scholarship as a 20-year-old.

Then, it took the panel a mere 30 seconds to pencil in Jindal’s name, as he stood out on the long roster of Louisiana’s high achievers with his intelligence and eloquence.

The judges took another 45 minutes to settle in on the second finalist.

Jindal has been anointed the boy wonder of a Republican Party that was left battered by the 2008 election and hungry for new leadership.

His audition on the national stage is tonight, and at 37, he was still working last night on the 10-minute speech.

Aides said he is writing it himself, although he has received input from party leaders.

In his star moment, Jindal is being anything but cautious.

Leading up to his speech, Jindal has voiced withering criticism of Obama’s 787 billion dollar economic recovery package, becoming the most prominent of a handful of Republican governors from Southern states to say they will reject some federal funds in the stimulus plan.

Jindal’s gamble is being widely regarded by GOP strategists as an attempt to burnish his fiscal conservative credentials in expectation of a presidential bid, perhaps as early as 2012.

The son of Indian immigrants, Jindal is the first non-white governor of Louisiana since Reconstruction and offers the GOP an attractive rival to Obama.

“Look, I think every American is incredibly proud by the president’s personal story, the fact that we will be seeing him addressing his first joint session of Congress tomorrow night, and I have been selected and honored to give . . . the Republican response,” Jindal said yesterday.

In picking a governor to deliver tonight’s speech, GOP leaders are acknowledging that without a majority in Congress, the big ideas necessary to rebuild their party are likely to come from state capitols.

Jindal is among several GOP governors harboring national ambitions, a group that includes Florida’s Charlie Crist, Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty, South Carolina’s Mark Sanford and Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Jr.

In Jindal, the GOP has chosen a charismatic spokesman with intellectual heft. (ANI)
