Sri Lankan cricketers shot in Pakistan terror attack

Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack also left six security men and two civilians dead.

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chief, said the Test has been called off. Salman Tasheer, the Punjab governor, said a helicopter will soon evacuate the Sri Lankan players from Gaddafi Stadium and take them to a nearby airbase from where the team will fly back to Sri Lanka. Duleep Mendis, the Sri Lanka Cricket chief, said that they were “getting the team back [to Sri Lanka] today”.

There have been terror strikes on the peripheries of cricket, but this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The Sri Lankans were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium when their bus was attacked by five armed terrorists near Liberty market. Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said 12 masked terrorists fired at the Sri Lankan team bus. The gunmen shot at the wheels of the bus and also injured the driver. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed.

Jayawardene received a cut to the ankle while Sangakkara was injured in the shoulder. Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paravitarana were the ones most seriously injured; both received shrapnels in the chest. Ajantha Mendis received a minor injury in the back.

“The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus,” Mahela Jayawardene told Cricinfo. “We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff], but most of the injuries appear to be minor at this stage and caused by debris.”

Security concerns in Pakistan

* September 2001- New Zealand decide not to tour Pakistan following USA’s military action in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. West Indies and Australia then decide to move their games in Pakistan scheduled for later in the year to neutral venues in Colombo and Sharjah.
* May 2002 – New Zealand cancel their tour of Pakistan after a bomb blast outside Karachi’s Sheraton Hotel where they were staying.
* March 2008 – Australia postpone their tour of Pakistan slated for the end of March as a result of security concerns. The decision was taken in the aftermath of Benazir Bhutto’s assasination in December 2007.
* October 2008 – West Indies call off a proposed tour of Pakistan scheduled for November citing security concerns, a week after the West Indies Women had cancelled the Pakistan leg of their Asian tour.
* December 2008 – The BCCI call off India’s scheduled tour of Pakistan in 2009 following a directive from the government.
* December 2008 – The PCB confirm that Sri Lanka will tour Pakistan after India decided not to after the Mumbai terror attack.
* February 2009 – The ICC decide not to stage the 2009 Champions Trophy in Pakistan after some of the members expressed reservations about touring the country.

Bottom Curve

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, confirmed that the remainder of the tour had been cancelled. “We note with dismay and regret the events of this morning in Lahore and we condemn this attack without reservation.

“It is a source of great sadness that there have been a number of fatalities in this attack and it is also very upsetting for the wider cricket family that some of the Sri Lanka players and one match official have been injured in this attack. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with the injured people and also the families of those who have died.”

Television footage of several gunmen creeping through the trees, crouching to aim their kalashnikovs then running onto the next target were aired by Pakistan’s private channel Geo.

Chamra Ranavira, third secretary and press secretary at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Islamabad, said Samaraweera and Paranavitana had been admitted to hospital, but were out of danger now. “We are communicating with the Pakistan Cricket Board and the high commission has taken action to send the cricket team back home as soon as possible,” he said.

The reserve umpire Ahsan Raza was also injured in the attack. Nadeem Ghauri, the TV umpire, who was traveling in a bus behind the Sri Lanka team bus said the firing continued for some time. Umpire Steve Davis, who was on the team bus, called the terrorist attack “terrible”. “I’m lost for words,” he said.

Speaking from Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya said that it was an “extremely unfortunate incident. “We’ve never had this kind of problem,” Jayasuriya told CNN-IBN. “They are all safe, that’s the good news I got when I spoke to Kumar. I don’t think they’ll stay back and play. I think they will come back as soon as possible. Depends on the injuries.”

Speaking on Geo TV, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain, said: “This is the first time that a cricket team has been seriously targeted… Pakistan’s image will be hit and only time will tell how much damage has been done to Pakistan cricket. The World Cup too might be affected… no country would want to come now to Pakistan… I am worried where Pakistan will get a chance to play, not only in Pakistan but outside as well. This is all so sad.”

The Indian cricket board, which called off a scheduled tour of Pakistan last December, expressed its sorrow over the attack. “We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured cricketers, and sympathise with their families and compatriots,” BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in New Delhi. “The BCCI stands alongside Sri Lanka Cricket in this hour of crisis.”

The Sri Lankan team had stepped in after the Indian government had barred the Indian team from touring Pakistan after the terror attack in Mumbai.

Acer Aspire 10-inch to be out soon

Acer Aspire 10-inch to be out soonAcer’s most popular netbook, the 8-inch Aspire one, has been launched. However, as they say, every rose has a thorn, this incredibly small netbook too has some flaws. For starters, many feel that an 8-inch screen would apparently be too small and they expect a netbook with at least 10-inch screen.

But it would be really nice to know that soon Acer would come out with 10-inch version of the same model. Though there has been no word on pricing or availability, it has been learnt that the machines with 10-inches screen will run on the Intel Atom N280/N270.

Some of the features of the yet to come Aspire one with 10-inch screen includes 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, optional 3G connectivity, multi-touch track pad, Windows XP and a SDHC card reader.

Maruti receives a legal notice from Honda over SX4 ads

A legal notice has been received by India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corp from Honda Siel Cars, a subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, since the former claimed in advertisement that its SX4 sedan is bigger than the Honda’s segment Leader City and is loaded with more features. The company received the notice on 13th January.

The ad by Maruti shows that the SX4 is bigger than City’s entry-level model, and furthermore, it does not have an integrated stereo as standard equipment.

Honda, filled with fury after viewing the ad, said, “The advertisement makes inaccurate, incomplete and distorted statements with an intention to mislead customers that amounts to unfair trade practice.” According to Honda, the ad is an attempt to discredit the new City, launched in November last year.

Honda has instructed Maruti to remove the advertisement as soon as possible and also has hinted at seeking damages. Honda’s law firm Ajit K Singh served the notice to Maruti. It was confirmed by the Honda executives that before initiating any action, including suing for monetary compensation, they are awaiting Maruti’s response on the issue.

It was informed by the Maruti officials that a legal notice has been served on the company. A Maruti spokesperson said, “We are examining the issue legally and will take suitable action as and when required.”

Bangladesh to send medicine for wounded Palestinians

Dhaka – Bangladesh was to send a consignment of medicine as humanitarian aid to wounded Palestinians in Gaza, which has been devastated by Israeli air and infantry attacks for the last three weeks, officials said Tuesday.

The aid will soon be dispatched to the Gaza Strip, where over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and several thousands others, including women and children, were injured by indiscriminate shelling by the Israeli forces, a foreign ministry statement said.

Dipu Moni, foreign minister of Muslim-majority Bangladesh, conveyed her government’s decision to send the medical aid after a meeting with Shaher Mohammad, the Palestinian ambassador to Bangladesh.

Talking to the media after his meeting with Moni, the Palestinian envoy said the Muslim nations needed more unity and cooperation to establish peace in the Middle East.

He expressed hope for a change in the US policy on the Palestine-Israel issue with Barack Obama taking over as the new president.

“We may see a change next week,” he said.

Bangladesh called on the Israeli authorities earlier to halt attacks on innocent civilians in Gaza. It also urged Israel to adhere to the United Nations resolutions to ensure peace in the Gaza Strip. (dpa)

Satyam corporate fraud shocks India

Hyderabad/Mumbai, Jan 9 (ANI): The recent corporate fraud of inflated profits of Satyam Computer, the country”s fourth-largest software company, has shocked investors in India.

Newspapers across the country on Friday carried the headlines screaming for the authorities to take action against the corporate fraud in order to reinstate the investor confidence.

Satyam employees shuffled into its Hyderabad office refusing to comment on anything. But employees of the software companies in Hyderabad said that the truth needed to come out soon so that air could be cleared.

Many said that investors as well as employees needed to get back the confidence that the Satyam corporate fraud was just an aberration and the moral health along with the financial health of India Inc was good.

“If tough actions are taken immediately, and truth is brought out immediately, we can at least get out that as soon as possible. That will help us, everybody, including customers,” said Kumar, an employee of a software firm.

The investigators are expected to swoop down on the company”s headquarters to search for clues on how the fraud could have been hidden for so long.

It may also increase investor nervousness about weak corporate governance and oversight in emerging markets, which are still reeling from the global financial crisis.

Amit Whagware from Mumbai who had invested in Satyam and other IT companies almost a year back said that this fraud was a big blow to investors, especially in times of global recessionary trends.

“It was a big shock to IT industry as well as to all the investors who were relying on such companies,” said Whagware.

Meanwhile, official sources have indicated that steps would be taken to strengthen laws to prevent corporate fraud after the scandal that sent the company”s shares plunging nearly 80 per cent. (ANI)

“Please don”t get stung by buying tickets for shows that don”t exist,” the Daily Express quoted a statement posted on the group’s website as reading.

“You can be sure any future live announcements will be made on U2.com as soon as details are confirmed,” the statement added.

This is the second time in six months that the band have had to warn their fans against buying counterfeit tickets circulating on the Internet.

In August last year, they were also forced to speak out to correct reports suggesting they were preparing to hit the road. (ANI)

London, Jan 08 (ANI): Hollywood actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who acted together in hit comedy flick ‘Shaun of the Dead’, will soon be seen in Steven Spielberg”s flick, which is an adaptation of classic Tintin comics.

The duo, which made all laugh with their comical antics in flicks like Hot Fuzz, will be cast as a clumsy detective pair Thomson and Thompson in the flick, reports the Daily Express.
