Slurry Mischa Barton dances solo at G- star after-bash

New York, Sep 18 (ANI): Mischa Barton got a little too high at the G- star after-party at the Bowery Hotel, where she was “slurring her words” and even started dancing on her own.

Barton, who was recently had to go for involuntary hospitalisation for wisdom-teeth complications, stumbled up to the check-in table and started asking for the DJ.

“She kept saying, in a really spacey, weird British accent, ‘Like, I’m with the deejay. I to tally know the deejay. I’m here for the deejay,’” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: “She was slurring her words.”

After being let in, Barton “needed to be escorted to the deejay booth” where she proceeded to “stand for about an hour, dancing in her own world. I don’t think her eyes were open to full capacity — or even half capacity-the whole time she was there,” said the source. (ANI)

India’s coastline vulnerable but security measures in place: Sureesh Mehta

Mumbai, Aug 20 (ANI): After Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s talked about a possible terror threat to the country, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta has said that the coastline was vulnerable, but adequate security measures were in place.

Talking to reporters here on the sidelines of flagging off a solo expedition of circumnavigating the globe by Commander Dilip Donde in Indian Navy’s yacht ‘Mhadei’, Mehta said, “We have a 7,500 kilometres coastline, so no doubt it will be vulnerable. But that vulnerable should be used in the right sense, that there is possibility of threat coming from here and therefore we have to take measures to ensure that that threat is taken care of.

Mehta also clarified his earlier statement that India had neither the capability nor the intention to match China, force for force.

“The context in which I have said that is that yes they have a much larger navy, larger does not mean better. There are ways to tackle this issue. We do not go counting; we do not say if you have ten ships, I will have ten ships. But may be I have better ships which are able to do that job much better than what somebody else can do. So I have said we need to get smarter, we need to get better outputs form lesser number of platforms rather than working up to increase the strength in such number that they match number for number,” said Mehta.

He further said that building of ports in Sri Lanka and Pakistan by China would create ‘dependency’ for those countries.

“I do believe that there will be some lien on them at times that is may be required, so dependency’s do get created by these kinds of measures. But it is their policy it is in their interest to do it, so they are doing it,” he added. (ANI)

‘Red-faced’ Mischa Barton kicked out by toilet attendant!

New York, July 3 (ANI): O.C. star Mischa Barton was left embarrassed after she was kicked out by a toilet attendant for dragging a friend into the toilet stall with her, it has emerged.

“Then her mate was knocking to check she was feeling okay,” the New York Daily News quoted an onlooker as saying.

Richard Wagner’s text-music match helped both performers and listeners, say researchers

Washington, July 2 (ANI): Contrary to all suggestions regarding Richard Wagner’s “difficult” reputation, a new study now suggests that the German composer used to set his text to music in a way that uses the acoustics of the soprano voice in a manner that helps both performers and listeners.

“Each vowel in European languages is associated with a set of resonance frequencies of the vocal tract,” says author Dr. John Smith, of the University of New South Wales.

“Both the intelligibility to listeners and the ease of production by singers could be improved if the pitch of the musical note written for a vowel corresponded with one of its resonance frequencies,” Smith says.

UNSW co-author, Professor Joe Wolfe, adds: “If this occurred we should expect to find that vowels normally sung with an open mouth would occur more often at the high notes of the soprano range.”

Writing about their work in the Journal of the Acoustic Society of America, the researchers have revealed that they tested this idea by examining the musical scores for eight operas.

For over 20,000 notes sung by solo sopranos in these operas, the authors recorded the vowel sound associated with each note.

In the Wagnerian operas, vowels that required an open mouth were used significantly more often for the very high notes. However, this was not the case for the other operas studied.

The researchers say that the preferential use of vowels in an appropriate range of pitch might have evolved because Wagner’s idea of opera was a continuous music drama in which singers often have to communicate lengthy, subtle aspects of plot via sung text alone.

Earlier operas often linked separate arias and choruses with the plot explained by recitative and actions on stage. There was thus less need for intelligibility at high pitch in these other operas.

The researchers further point out that Wagner wrote for much larger orchestras than available to Mozart or Rossini, and wrote vocal parts that severely test the stamina and capabilities of singers.

Thus, according to them, the employment of vowel-pitch matching could have helped satisfy the concomitant requirements of intelligibility, vocal power and easier singing of difficult parts.

“We know of no written evidence that Wagner tried to make singing parts easier for sopranos, but this research indicates that suitable matching of vowels with pitch increased systematically as Wagner’s experience as a composer increased,” says Dr. Smith.

Wagner was unusual as he wrote the librettos for all his operas, and thus had a distinct advantage in matching text with music.

Furthermore Wagner had considerable time to “polish” his operas. While Rossini wrote some 26 operas in seven years, Wagner wrote only fourteen in over 50 years. (ANI)

Jeff Koons unveils his works on cartoon character Popeye in London

London, Jul 1 (ANI): American artist Jeff Koons will be holding a major solo show featuring work from his Popeye series in London.

The work will go on public display at the Serpentine Gallery from July 2, and the focus will be on his paintings of iconic cartoon character Popeye, as well as inflatable beach and bath toys, including a giant lobster.

The Serpentine Gallery said that it was the first major exhibition of the artist’s work in a public gallery in England. oons said that he wanted visitors to engage with the works, and feel that “their history, their culture is perfect”.

Popeye and Olive Oyl are central to the series, with many of the pieces on loan from both public and private collections.

The exhibition also includes dolphins, a paddling pool, monkeys and lobsters, which at first glance, look like inflatable toys, but the objects are cast in aluminium and their surfaces are painted.

“Working with everyday objects, it’s about people and the acceptance of others,” the BBC quoted Koons as saying.

“I watched Popeye when I was younger… I always see a little bit of my father in Popeye,” he said.

Koons began his Popeye series in 2002, and compares his “inflatables” to life.

“In our own life we’re inflatable. We exhale and it’s a simple death,” he said.

“They’re (the artworks) in a state of being optimistic. Maybe art is the spinach,” he added. (ANI)

Jane Fonda says she could never understand pal Jacko

London, June 30 (ANI): Although she struck up a close friendship with Michael Jackson, actress Jane Fonda insists she could never really understand the King Of Pop.

The pair became pals back in the 1970s, during Fonda’s acting heyday and shortly after Jackson began his solo career.

While writing on her blog, the 71-year-old actress said that Jack was a frequent visitor to her Santa Barbara, California home and confesses she never really understood him.

She even wondered if Jackson sought to seduce her.

“I couldn’t pretend to understand him. There were so many complicated signals. Did he want me to be his ‘older women’ friend? He gravitated to older women. For solace? …Did he want me to teach him the ropes? I never could quite figure it out,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

Recalling an incident, Fonda said once she showed him the burial spot she had prepared for herself and was stunned to see the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s reaction.

“He shrieked and bent over and said, ‘No, no, no!’ ‘What’s the matter,’ I asked. ‘Don’t ever talk about your dying. Don’t ever think about it’” she said.

Fonda is relieved that Jackson’s death was probably painless, adding, “I like the fact that it was quick. Massive heart attacks that you don’t recover from are quick. You don’t know what hit you. That’s probably the kindest death for Michael.” (ANI)

Eliot Spitzer claims he’s not like Mark Sanford

New York, June 29 (ANI): Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer says that he is not similar to South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford.

Spitzer had resigned in March last year, after it was reported that he was a client of a prostitution ring under investigation by the federal government.

On the other hand, on June 24, 2009, Sanford resigned as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, when it was revealed he was in an extramarital affair with an Argentinian, Maria Belen Chapur.

And thus, at a lunch meeting with LMDC executive director Avi Schick at Solo in the Sony Building on Madison, Spitzer was overheard as saying that there’s a huge difference in what he did and what Sanford has done.

“I didn’t fall in love with any of them,” the New York Post quoted him as telling Schick.

Besides, Spitzer didn’t use any taxpayer money on his trysts, while Sanford is reimbursing the state about 12,000 dollars for travel expenses to Buenos Aires. (ANI)

What made Jacko a legend

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): Remembering the ebb and flow of late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s career, the critics are busy jotting down facts that made the singer a legend.

And, now, a report shedding light on such facts reveals that Jackson’s Billie Jean made him the first black artist whose video to have his video broadcast on MTV.

Published by the China Daily, the report reveals that another reason behind why Jackson was so famous was the fact that he owned the rights to the South Carolina State Anthem South Carolina on My Mind, recorded by Hank Martin and Buzz Arledge.

Jackson was so popular that his waxwork features in five Madame Tussauds museums across the world. Only Elvis Presley and Madonna have more Tussaud figures-they have six each.

The report reckons that Jackson’s total lifetime earnings from royalties, solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements were about 500 million dollars.

Jackson was also famous for receiving a Presidential Humanitarian Award from Ronald Reagan in 1984, for his support of charities helping people overcome alcohol and drug abuse.

He was also know for losing a fight against fellow 50 year old Madonna on MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch.

Three of Jackson’s albums-Bad, Dangerous and Thriller-are among the bestsellers of all time. Thriller remains the biggest-selling album since records began.

To date, over 300 million copies of his records have been sold worldwide.

Jackson was also known for wearing his trademark black armband to remind fans of the suffering of children around the world.

His favourite superhero was Morph from the X-Men.

He picked up his iconic moonwalk moves, which he debuted at the Motown 25th Anniversary show in 1983, from streetdancers he had spotted performing outside a hotel.

Little Richard thought that Jackson would be the right choice to play him in a biopic.

Jackson’s most famous pets were Bubbles the chimp and Ben the rat.

He, however, also befriended a ram called Mr Tibbs, a python called Crusher, and Louie the llama.

The fact that a French Jackson aficionado committed suicide in 1984 after his mother refused to allow him to undergo surgery to look like the star shows how popular he was among his fans.

In 1984, a U.S. library accused Jackson of owing it over one million dollars in overdue book fines. Officials said that they would scrap the fines if he returned the books autographed. (ANI)

Music historian assesses Jacko as ‘pivotal figure in US music history’

Washington, June 28 (ANI): A music historian has assessed Michael Jackson’s musical greatness, classifying him as “one of the world’s great entertainers and a pivotal figure in the history of American music.”

John Covach, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music at the University of Rochester and professor of music theory at the Eastman School of Music, reacted to the King of Pop’s shock death on June 25.

He said: “Michael Jackson is arguably the most important figure in 1980s popular music. Though he got his start as a child singing a series of hits in the 1970s with his brothers in the Jackson 5, Jackson’s ascent to the status of The King of Pop occurred as a solo artist.

“The 1982 album Thriller was one of the biggest albums the music business had ever witnessed, containing several top hits, including “Billy Jean” and “Beat It.” As impressive as the music on that record is (thanks in no small part to the production mastery of Quincy Jones), it was the videos that made the strongest impact.

“In fact, the power and popularity of Jackson’s videos to “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and Billie Jean” helped MTV to rise as a force in the music industry, even as it helped Jackson sell more records. It was a symbiotic relationship that changed popular music forever.

“Jackson’s career touched on so many important aspects of pop-music history in the second half of the 20th century. Signed initially to Motown by Berry Gordy Jr., the Jackson 5 became a kind of bubblegum version of the Temptations, continuing the crossover tradition with catchy songs and choreographed dance steps.

“As the hippie rock of the 1970s was challenged by punk, new wave, and disco late in the decade, nobody was better positioned than Michael Jackson to bring together well-produced music with exceptional and exciting dance steps. His Off the Wall album of 1979 certainly ranks as one of the best records to come out of the disco years.

“Younger fans of pop music may have to be reminded how incredibly powerful Michael Jackson’s music was in the 1980s. More than that, Jackson defined “cool” during those years. The single glove, his patented moonwalk step, that slightly rebellious yet gentle demeanor-all this youthful charm slipped away over time, as it does for all of us.

“But at the height of his powers, Michael Jackson was one of the world’s great entertainers and a pivotal figure in the history of American music. That’s how he should be remembered.”

Covach has authored “What’s That Sound? An Introduction to Rock and Its History” and has also been the co-editor of “Understanding Rock.” (ANI)

Gwen Stefani still haunted by her fear of exams

London, June 27 (ANI): Gwen Stefani might have enjoyed a wildly successful career with the rock band ‘No Doubt’ and as a solo artist, but as a school kid she was convinced that she was talentless.

The 39-year-old star admits that she was a bad student, and that she is still haunted by her fear of exams.

“School was just really hard for me. I didn’t want to fail I wanted to be smart! But I was really dreaming, like drawing my boyfriend’s name on my notebooks. It was such a disaster. It’s so sad! It makes me sad when I think about it. I still have nightmares about tests,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling America’s Elle magazine.

“I never had any kind of ambitions. I just thought I was going to have babies… When I found out that I could write songs, I felt like all of a sudden I’d found myself. Like, really, this power that I had that I never had before. It was amazing to have something that I could do after the whole school problem,” she added. (ANI)

Washington, June 25 (ANI): Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie has revealed that her father hated the music she made after separating from the band.

Her father Patrick Ferguson had disapproved, saying, “The worst song that he’d ever heard in his life”.

“(I said) ‘Dad, I respect that, but I hope you’re wrong, because it’s my first single,’” Contactmusic quoted her as telling in an interview with Allure magazine.

The stunner had made her solo debut with ‘The Dutchess’ in 2006 that went on to become a huge hit, especially the lead single, ‘London Bridge’. (ANI)
