Infosys says seeks acquisitions worth up to $700 mln

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Infosys Ltd, India’s No.2 software services exporter, is looking for acquisitions worth up to $700 million, Infosys’ Executive Co-Chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan said on Thursday.

India’s IT sector, which feeds off increased outsourcing by companies looking to cut costs, is expected to face pricing pressure and a decline in new orders as Europe struggles with a debt crisis and the United States battles an economic slowdown.

Infosys and its local rivals also face stiff competition from global players including IBM and Accenture for large outsourcing deals from global corporations.

Researchers operate biomedical robots from different locations worldwide via Internet

Washington, September 18 (ANI): Experts from the University of Washington and SRI International have jointly developed a new software protocol, to standardize the way biomedical robots are managed over the Internet.

Nine research teams from universities and research institutes around the world recently made a successful demonstration of biomedical robots operated from different locations in the U.S., Europe, and Asia with the help of the ‘Interoperable Telesurgical Protocol’.

In a 24-hour period, each participating group connected over the Internet, and controlled robots at different locations.

The tests performed demonstrated how a wide variety of robot and controller designs can seamlessly interoperate, allowing researchers to work together easily and more efficiently.

The demonstration also evaluated the feasibility of robotic manipulation from multiple sites, and was conducted to measure time and performance for evaluating laparoscopic surgical skills.

“Although many telemanipulation systems have common features, there is currently no accepted protocol for connecting these systems. We hope this new protocol serves as a starting point for the discussion and development of a robust and practical Internet-type standard that supports the interoperability of future robotic systems,” said SRI’s Tom Low.

The protocol is expected to allow engineers and designers that usually develop technologies independently, to work collaboratively, determine which designs work best, encourage widespread adoption of the new communications protocol, and help robotics research to evolve more rapidly.

Its early adoption may encourage robotic systems to be developed with interoperability in mind, and avoid future incompatibilities.

We were particularly excited that novel elements such as a simulated robot and an exoskeleton controller worked smoothly with the other remote manipulation systems,” said Professor Blake Hannaford of the University of Washington. Krishna in Belarus to strengthen bilateral ties

Minsk, Sept 17 (ANI): Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has arrived here to foster bilateral ties between the two countries.

Krishna is the first Indian External Minister to visit this country.

On Wednesday, Krishna visited the Victory Square Monument in the city and paid tribute to soldiers who had laid down their lives during the World War II while fighting the Nazi invaders.

“This is the first ever visit by an Indian Minister for External Affairs to Belarus. I think it is an important visit with a view to further cement and strengthen relationship to mutual advantage,” said Ramesh Chander, Indian Ambassador to Belarus.

Krishna’s visit is being seen as important, as it would help to cement ties further between the two countries.

“In 2008, we had a 432 million trade turnover. And this year, it is likely to touch 500 million by the end of the year,” Chander added.

Krishna reviewed guard of honour of the Belarus Army at the Square. He was received by the Deputy Mayor of Minsk, Titenkov Mikhail.

On Thursday, Krishna will call on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

He will also hold talks with his counterpart Sergey Martynov. Two agreements will be signed including one on Cooperation in Physical Education and Sports and an MoU on the Establishment of a Digital Learning Centre in Minsk.

The Digital Learning Centre will impart skills in advanced computing and software creation to young Belarusian students, initially with Indian faculty members and thereafter with trained Belarusian professionals.

Krishna will also pay an official visit to Turkmenistan on September 18 and 19.

He will call on Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov and hold meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov.

Krishna will also have a meeting with Minister in-charge of Oil and Gas sector Baymyrat Hojamuhammedov.

Hackers capitalise on Swayze’s death

Sydney, Sept 16 (ANI): Hackers are using Patrick Swayze’s death to push off spurious anti-virus software to Internet users and infect their computers with viruses.

The 57-year-old Swayze died of pancreatic cancer on Monday.

Many bogus websites claiming to provide information on the death of the Dirty Dancing star have mushroomed up.

Computer security company Sophos recently showed in a recent video that hackers list these sites on the first page of search engines like Google.

Visitors to these sites are asked for an anti-virus scan and the result shows that the user’s computer is infected by Trojans, which are actually not present. The sites then try to sell fake anti-virus software to the users to clean up their systems.

Many sites also infect the users’ computer with viruses that can crack passwords and credit card numbers and send them to the hackers.

Hackers have also used the deaths of Michael Jackson and Natasha Richardson to lead users to virus infected sites.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Sophos senior technology consultant Graham Cluley as saying: “Clearly the cybercriminals are no slackers when it comes to jumping on a trending internet topic, and are more professional than ever before in spreading their fake anti-virus scams.” (ANI)

Satyam pulls out of Oz university development project

Melbourne, Sep 11 (ANI): Mahindra Satyam has pulled out of a 75 million dollars software development project at Deakin University that was set to create 2000 jobs in Geelong, Victoria.

The company’s president of corporate affairs, Sujit Baksi, informed the state government of its intention in a letter to IT minister John Lenders.

According to the Geelong Advertiser, Baksi wrote: “The need to concentrate on an extensive internal restructuring program of our business precludes Mahindra Satyam from embarking on expansion projects of this kind.

“While Mahindra Satyam is disappointed that it cannot proceed with the centre, it reaffirms its commitment to future expansion in Victoria when circumstances allow.”

A Satyam Australia spokeswoman confirmed that the project had been cancelled, The Australian reports.

According to the report, Baksi committed to Mahindra Satyam paying back the undisclosed cash grant to the Brumby Government, which the company was given to lure it to Geelong.

In July the new owner of Satyam, Tech Mahindra, said it was committed to the project and was investigating its viability.

The future of the Geelong project, occupying 10ha at Deakin University, came into question after Satyam founder and chairman B. Ramalinga Raju admitted to a one billion dollars accounting scandal in January. (ANI)

RIL’s Jamnagar refinery to get CISF security cover

New Delhi, Aug 30 (ANI): Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has decided to get the security cover from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for its Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat.

According to sources, the RIL has conveyed its decision to the Union Home Ministry that they are now keen to take the CISF security cover. The CISF personnel are likely to be deployed in Jamnagar by September.

Though the Home Ministry has cleared the request of the RIL a couple of months ago, but the RIL has sought time to reconsider its decision, sources added.

The RIL is the second private company to get protection from the CISF after the Central Government’s announcement that the central police forces would be available for guarding private installations.

The software major Infosys is the first private company to have a security cover from CISF. The central police force is giving the protection to Infosys head office in Bangalore since July.

The officials of the CISF carried out exhaustive survey of the refinery and decided to provide 100 personnel for it. Besides guarding, the CISF is likely to assist RIL in training the company’s security personnel, sources said. (ANI)

Robots may soon be serving the elderly at home just like humans do

Washington, August 29 (ANI): Elderly people with limited mobility may soon come to be served by robots in a manner as if they are being served by other persons, thanks to a collaborative study by three University of Illinois at Chicago engineers and a Rush University nursing specialist.

“We want to help elderly people communicate with robots, to tell them what they need, and to perform physical activities,” said Milos Zefran, UIC associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.

The three-year study, supported by a grant of 989,000 dollars from the National Science Foundation, is aimed at developing software to allow the elderly to communicate with robots that can respond to a wide range of verbal language, non-verbal gestures, and touch.

“If we can help the elderly remain independent and continue living in their own homes, that will improve their health outlook while relieving the burden on family members and health care providers,” said Zefran, the lead researcher.

The researchers say that their communication interface software will have at its core a novel adaptive and reliable recognition methodology called Recognition by Indexing and Sequencing (RISq), which will allow the robot to comprehend speech altered by impairments and to learn and adapt to such speech.

To enable a robot to understand and correctly respond to various forms of human touch, the researchers will combine techniques from natural language processing and haptics, a scientific term to describe the computerized sense of touch.

They say that the robot will also know how to respond to the user safely when performing everyday chores, such as cooking or making a bed.

“We’ll start by observing interaction between human helpers and the elderly. We’ll identify what kind of language, physical interactions and non-verbal interactions are used. Then we’ll develop a mathematical framework to model this interaction so it can be treated by the robot as a single way of communicating,” Zefran said.

The researchers say that they will program and test a robot, in order to devise refinements, as the project progresses.

“The human-robot interface is really a long-standing, open problem that won’t be solved in three years. But we’ll have a working prototype by then, and we’ll know what additional research needs to be done,” Zefran said.

He believes that this research project may also find widespread use in delivery of institutionally based health care, where routine tasks now done by nurses could be handled by robots.

“If robots can alleviate some of the burden nurses face, they then could spend more time where they’re really needed — providing the human contact that a robot can’t replace,” he said.

Zefran has revealed that his work will include developing seminars or a new graduate or upper-level undergraduate course that considers the various factors that allow robots to perform more sophisticated tasks. (ANI)

Indian prodigy boy completes PhD in physics at the age of 21

Bangalore, Aug 28 (ANI): After creating waves by completing Bachelors’ degree at the age of 10 and Masters at 12, Tathagat Avatar Tulsi, well known as child prodigy has achieved another milestone by becoming a PhD in Physics.

He has completed his doctorate in Physics at the age of 21 from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, spending six years like anyone else.

Tulsi has the special distinction of being one of the world’s youngest scientists.

He credited his family members especially his father for helping him achieve the feat.

“Of course, there is some gift part there. I cannot ignore that because not all six-year-old boys are that sharp in Maths and have that kind of memory, which I had. So I think that there was a gift and I feel very lucky that I got proper environment in terms of my family members particularly my father. He did his best to encourage my talent,” said Tulsi.

The young Indian scientist has an invite from the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, Canada, for post- doctoral work.

But he wants to continue his research in software development for quantum computing, the super fast future of number crunching in India given a chance and proper funding.

He said that he hopes to set up his own quantum computing company someday and is working hard for it.

Tulsi got a place for himself in the Guinness Book of World Records for holding MSc in physics from Patna University, at the age of 12 years and 2 months in 1999.

A native of Bihar, he was born into a lower middle-class family on September 9, 1987. His over ambitious parents wanted him to finish studies at the very young age to break all the world records.

Washington, August 22 (ANI): A scientist of Indian origin has created a new supercomputer, called Cystorm, which can carry out 28.16 trillion calculations per second.

Cystorm, a Sun Microsystems machine, was developed by Srinivas Aluru from the Iowa State University.

The 3,200 computer processor cores that power Cystorm makes it perform 28.16 trillion calculations per second, which is five times the peak of CyBlue, an IBM Blue Gene/L supercomputer that’s been on campus since early 2006 and uses 2,048 processors to do 5.7 trillion calculations per second.

According to Aluru, the Ross Martin Mehl and Marylyne Munas Mehl Professor of Computer Engineering and the leader of the Cystorm project, the new machine also scores high on a more realistic test of a supercomputer’s actual performance: 15.44 trillion calculations per second compared to CyBlue’s 4.7 trillion per second.

That measure makes Cystorm 3.3 times more powerful than CyBlue.

“Cystorm is going to be very good for data-intensive research projects,” Aluru said. “The capabilities of Cystorm will help Iowa State researchers do new, pioneering research in their fields,” he added.

The supercomputer is targeted for work in materials science, power systems and systems biology.

Aluru said that materials scientists will use the supercomputer to analyze data from the university’s Local Electrode Atom Probe microscope, an instrument that can gather data and produce images at the atomic scale of billionths of a meter.

Systems biologists will use the supercomputer to build gene networks that will help researchers understand how thousands of genes interact with each other.

Power systems researchers will use the supercomputer to study the security, reliability and efficiency of the energy infrastructure of the US.

Computer engineers will use the supercomputer to build a software infrastructure that helps users make decisions by identifying relevant information sources.

“These research efforts will lead to significant advances in the penetration of high performance computing technology,” said a summary of the Cystorm project. (ANI)

Most scientifically accurate and advanced planetarium show on display in US

Washington, August 21 (ANI): High-performance computing systems, visualization resources, and software tools provided by the National Science Foundation TeraGrid helped make the Hayden Planetarium’s new space show the most scientifically accurate and advanced planetarium show ever produced.

The Hayden Planetarium is a public planetarium located on Central Park West, New York City, next to and organizationally part of the American Museum of Natural History.

“Journey to the Stars,” which debuted this summer at the American Museum of Natural History, is being hailed as the most beautiful planetarium show to date.

Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the 25-minute presentation takes viewers on a journey through the universe.

The space show projects cutting-edge visualizations of the universe onto the 87-foot, seven-million-pixel dome of the museum’s Hayden Sphere at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City.

Piecing together a new narrative of life’s origins, the space show explains how dark matter’s gravity gathered the primordial gas in the universe to form the first stars, and how these massive stars exploded, seeding the galaxy with new stars and the chemical elements that made life possible.

The centerpiece of the show, and the most difficult sequence to depict scientifically, is a flight into the center of the Sun.

The visuals of the Sun were produced using supercomputing resources provided by the NSF TeraGrid, a national cyberinfrastructure for open scientific research.

According to Ro Kinzler, the show’s producer, “We wanted to treat the Sun in a terrific and powerful way to [not just] reveal the surface, but to take our audience into the Sun, through the convective layer and into the core.”

“The results are beautiful. No one has seen the Sun in this way, and the software from NCAR and computational resources from TACC made it possible,” he said.

The visual sequences are based on the research of Juri Toomre, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and run on TACC’s Ranger supercomputer.

“It’s not enough to know what comes out of the surface,” Toomre said.

“We would like to understand how the magnetic engine of a star works, how it churns away and how it builds orderly fields. This is one of the top 10 questions in physics,” Toomre added.

“A very dramatic moment in the show is when we actually peel away the surface of the Sun, revealing the dynamic convective motion below,” Kinzler said. “We take the audience through the convective region and into the Sun’s core,” he added. (ANI)

Pallam Raju calls upon private industry to participate in defence sector

New Delhi, Aug 20(ANI): Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju on Thursday called upon the private industry in IT and Engineering Design for meeting the needs of the Defence Forces.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar on ‘Emerging Technologies for Sub-Conventional Conflict and Homeland Security’, Raju said the Government plans to meet upto 70 per cent of India’s Defence purchases from indigenous sources.

“The terrorists, militants and insurgents are acquiring advanced weapons and communication equipment. Their methods of warfare are becoming more sophisticated, more complex and more systematically planned. Their objectives are becoming more ambitious, with the intention of inflicting maximum damage,” Raju said.

“Therefore, the task ahead is formidable. Our defence forces and paramilitary forces need to be further equipped, adequately trained and properly supported. Armaments and munitions, state-of-the-art equipment, and support systems in telecommunications, surveillance and other areas should be proportionate to the threat perception,” he added.

Raju further said that in order to counter the growing threat, India needs to work on a number of fronts simultaneously.

“Leveraging emerging technologies is one of the critical aspects in this area. The world has made rapid strides in technology development in conducting warfare as well as in communications and transport,” Raju said.

“India has evident capacities in information technology and engineering design in the private sector, through which it has been able to successfully capture the space of outsourcing and software services,” he added.

He also informed that the country would spend around 10 billion dollars in the next seven years on homeland security alone.

“Internal security is a matter that is engaging us very closely and is high on our priority agenda. After the horrific attacks on Mumbai last November which killed 173 people, we have taken up the challenge to modernize and upgrade our security forces in a comprehensive manner,” Raju said. (ANI)

Government to adopt new norms to nail corporate frauds

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): After failing to detect the Satyam Computer scam, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs is reportedly planning to adopt new norms to nail corporate frauds.

The proposed system would include sending out alert signals if discrepancies are found in company books.

Adverse remarks from auditors and changing auditors more than once in three years can bring a company under the fraud scanner, an Indian Express report reveals.

The proposed early warning system (EWS) software would alert officials if a company’s quantum of related-party transactions is more than five per cent of domestic sales, or 50 per cent or more directors resign in one year, or earning per share fluctuates more than 25 per cent compared with the previous year.

Not only will listed or large companies come under scrutiny, but also unlisted and smaller firms, sources said.

Various risk factors such as not filing annual accounts for two years, share application money remaining unallotted for more than a year, complaints received from shareholders against the affairs of the company, occurrence of losses if there has been profit in the last two years, continuous increase in capital-work-in-progress for three consecutive years will be recognised by the software.

Once the relevant information is entered into the EWS, it will calculate the risk.

The ministry says it will also continue to depend on media reports, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and the Income Tax Department to gather information about the affairs of companies. Average age of adult video game player is 35: US study

London, August 18 (ANI): The average age of an adult video gamer has been found to be 35, which is higher than previously believed, reveals a new US study.

According to a team from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), players were also less healthy, fatter, and more depressed than those who stayed away from the device.

A previous UK survey, conducted by the Leisure Software Publishers Association seven years ago, had placed the average age of the player’s age between 25 and 34, reports the BBC.

But it also said that the age bar was gradually increasing, a finding reinforced by the CDC study.

CDC experts found that female gamers reported greater depression and lower health status than female non-players, while male video-game players reported a higher BMI and a greater reliance online than non-gamers.

Dr James B Weaver said: “Health risk factors, specifically a higher BMI and a larger number of poor mental-health days, differentiated adult video game players from non-gamers.

“Video game players also reported lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status.” (ANI)
