Bashir to miss AU summit as Sudan snubs Uganda – sources

(Reuters) – Sudan President Omar Hassan al- Bashir will not attend an African Union summit in Uganda, presidential sources said on Sunday, despite a resolution urging African states not to arrest the leader wanted for genocide.

In a further snub, Khartoum will not even send a minister from Khartoum to the summit, official sources said.

The move deepens a rift between the neighbors after President Yoweri Museveni did not attend Bashir’s swearing-in after disputed elections, but visited Juba for the inauguration of South Sudan President Salva Kiir, Bashir’s deputy.

“This is not about the president being afraid of being arrested,” one presidential source told Reuters. “We could send the vice president instead but we are not sending him or any minister,” the source said.

The International Criminal Court added genocide this month to charges issued last year against Bashir of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the war-torn Darfur region where the United Nations estimates a humanitarian crisis has claimed 300,000 lives since a 2003 revolt by rebels demanding more wealth and power.

DOUBLE STANDARDS

But the AU has accused the court of double standards and of targeting the continent. A draft AU resolution seen by Reuters on Saturday in Kampala told member states not to arrest Bashir.

Bashir himself rarely fails to attend an AU summit and, intent on wooing its African allies, Sudan always sends high-level representation to the meetings.

The Sudanese permanent representative to the AU will head the delegation, the sources said.

The snub also follows a diplomatic faux pas by Uganda which retracted a statement last month that Bashir was not invited to the summit after Khartoum asked the AU to switch venue.

In defiance of the ICC warrant Bashir visited Chad last week — the first time he has traveled to a full member of the court — and returned triumphantly praising African solidarity.

The visit exposed the ICC’s key weakness — it has no police force and relies on member states to arrest suspects.

Uganda asked the ICC to investigate its northern rebellion and the court issued its first arrest warrants for commanders from the Ugandan insurgent Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

Museveni also has a strong relationship with south Sudan, a semi-autonomous region which has fought a bloody civil war on and off with Khartoum since 1955.

The south will vote in a referendum on independence in January 2011, and most analysts expect it will secede.

UPDATE 1-UBS CEO sees politicians backing U.S. tax deal

VIENNA, June 11 (Reuters) – UBS (UBSN.VX) (UBS.N) chief executive Oswald Gruebel expects Swiss parliamentarians to back a tax deal that would draw a line under a legal dispute that has threatened to bring the bank to its knees.

The Swiss lower house rejected the deal on Tuesday, triggering a new parliamentary debate next week and delaying a final decision on whether to allow the government to hand over 4,450 UBS client accounts to U.S. authorities. [ID:nLDE6570NF]

When asked by reporters on the sidelines of a banking event whether the Swiss parliament would back the deal, Gruebel said: “I am confident it will approve it because it is about a contract between the U.S. and Switzerland, not with UBS”.

UBS has already handed over the data to Swiss authorities for processing, as required by the United States under the agreement. “We had to fulfil certain obligations which we have done, so it’s now up to Switzerland and the U.S.,” Gruebel said.

Tuesday’s snub by the main arm of parliament came after a vote in favour of the deal by the upper house last week, meaning the two houses will have to try and agree a common text by the end of next week. [ID:nLDE65117T]

Even if Swiss politicians support the deal, they could still put it to a referendum, a scenario the lower house supported on Tuesday. That would delay the handover of data beyond the August deadline even if Swiss voters were in favour.

The U.S. government agreed last year to drop tax evasion charges against UBS after Switzerland promised it would transfer by this August the details of clients UBS helped to dodge taxes, a move that would breach existing bank secrecy laws. [ID:nLDE64B1HV]

A Swiss court in January duly blocked the data transfer, forcing the government to move to bypass that ruling with a legal patch that requires parliamentary approval by both houses. (Reporting by Ed Taylor; Writing by Jason Rhodes; Editing by Dan Lalor)

Ribery likely snub Premier League giants’ overtures to stay with Bayern Munich

London, May 21(ANI): Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery is likely to turn his back on the English Premier League and sign a four-year contract extension with the German club.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with Ribery, with talk of bids in excess of 50 million pounds, The Sun reports.

However, Ribery may snub the clubs and sign the new contract until 2015, with a new club-record salary after Munich’s Champions League final against Inter Milan on Saturday.

The 27-year-old is expected to formally announce his decision before flying out to South Africa for the World Cup. (ANI)

Cannes’ LiLo ‘snub’

New York, May 13 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan has been trying to swing a free trip to the Cannes film festival to wrangle money for her new Linda Lovelace biopic, ‘Inferno,’ but no one”s willing to pay for her, it has emerged.

“She”s been asking around, but hasn”t had any takers,” the New York Post quoted a source as saying.

The ‘Mean Girls’ star was well-behaved when she showed up at the Valentino-sponsored fete for the Lincoln Center Institute at the Hudson Hotel this week.

Director Matthew Wilder of the Lovelace flick says: “It”s not something I can imagine that anybody would ever be turned on by, unless they”re really sick.” (ANI)

Glazers snub 1.5 billion pound bid for Manchester United

London, May 7 (ANI): The US-based Glazer family has reportedly rejected a 1.5 billion bid for Manchester United.

The group of wealthy United fans were understood to be planning a 1.2 billion pound offer for the club this summer.

But news of the Glazers” reluctance to accept a higher offer, believed to be from a Middle East consortium last year, is a massive stumbling block, The Sun reports.

United supporters have shown their discontent for the Glazer regime with their ”green and gold” protests at Old Trafford this season.

Fans are unhappy with the lack on investment in the team, especially after Cristiano Ronaldo”s world record 80-million-pound sale to Real Madrid last year.

Supporters are also worried by the club”s spiralling debts which stand at over 700-million-pounds. (ANI)

Hospitals unhappy with budget snub

North-west Victorian hospitals say they are disappointed what they say were modest requests for upgrading work were ignored in the state budget.

The focus of the regional health budget was on Bendigo, which is getting a new $450 million hospital.

But there was none of the new money requested for improvement work at Mildura, Swan Hill, Edenhope and Warracknabeal.

The Mildura Base Hospital chief executive, Dane Huxley, says he asked for less than $5 million.

“There’s been no infrastructure development at this hospital since it opened in 2000, so that’s really 10 years with nothing happening at all and we felt that we had a very good case for modest enhancements to the building in the emergency department, the maternity unit and the mental health unit,” he said.

Paltrow pulls out of ‘The Danish Girl’ after Kidman ‘snub’

Melbourne, April 19 (ANI): Gwyneth Paltrow has reportedly decided to pull out of new film ‘The Danish Girl’ because of co-star Nichole Kidman.

Sources say that Kidman’s cold reactions turned off Paltrow and she decided to step out from the project.

Paltrow was shooting for her upcoming film ‘Love Don’t Let Me Down’ in Nashville, which is near to place where Kidman lives, and tried to get in touch with her, but the Aussie actress declined.

“Gwyneth made the effort to get in touch with Nicole but Nicole declined,” the Daily Telegraph quoted a source as saying.

“Gwyneth is on her own and lonely, it would have been nice for Nicole to make the effort,” the source added.

Paltrow has, however, said that she has quit the project due to tiredness.

“Some days I feel like everyone in my world has plugged themselves into my kidneys. I”m so tired,” she told Harper”s Bazaar magazine.

A rep for Paltrow said: “Chris (Martin, her husband) and Gwyneth have spent a lot of time apart. This way she gets more family time”” (ANI)

Funding snub for cancer care centre

Central western New South Wales has been unsuccessful in its bid to for a cancer care centre of excellence.

The Federal Government has told the consortium, which is behind the proposal, that it has missed out on $40 million to develop and enhance cancer care services in the western region.

The Commonwealth has announced a regional cancer centre will be established at Tamworth.

Local surgeon Bill Mackie, who helped prepare the submission, says there are still alternative funding sources available.

“It doesn’t mean that there’s no further funding coming to our area. I think what it does mean though that we need to build on the services we have, as we’ve always done in the past, without necessarily having to rely on government support,” he said.

Dr Mackie says it is disappointing the submission, which was vying for a share of $560 million, involved setting up cancer care services in Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo, was rejected.

“It’s a disappointment rather than a blow. We will still have very good services,” he said.

“I think we had the opportunity to develop something which was really exceptional. We haven’t closed the door on that opportunity, we still have a relationship with the centres in Sydney but we need to be looking at ways we can facilitate that without having to rely on government funding.”

Israel’s Netanyahu rejects “Obama disaster” headline

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected on Sunday a description of President Barack Obama as Israel’s “greatest disaster”, a phrase a best-selling newspaper attributed to an anonymous confidant of the premier.

Both leaders are locked in a deep disagreement over Israeli settlement in occupied territory in and near Jerusalem. Analysts have described as a humiliating snub Obama’s low-profile White House talks with Netanyahu on Tuesday.

In a banner headline, Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth, quoted an unidentified Netanyahu confidant as saying: “We’ve got a real problem. You could say that Obama is the greatest disaster for Israel — a strategic disaster.”

A statement issued by Netanyahu’s office said: “The prime minister emphatically rejects the anonymous quotes about President Obama that a newspaper attributed to one of his confidants, and he condemns them.”

Netanyahu was at pains to hammer home the message, telling reporters at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting: “I have heard over recent days anonymous and improper remarks in the media about the U.S. administration and American president.”

“I want to say clearly, these comments are unacceptable to me. They do not come from anyone representing me. The relations between Israel and the United States are those of allies and friends, and are based on tradition spanning many years.”

Netanyahu gave no indication in his public remarks at the session that he intended to curb settlement in East Jerusalem, an issue that has angered Palestinians and delayed the start of indirect, U.S.-mediated peace talks.

But the statement — distributed to correspondents by text message, and followed by two telephone calls from a Netanyahu spokesman to check it was being published — appeared to signal the Israeli leader’s wish not to worsen tensions with Obama.

The Obama-Netanyahu meeting at the White House was held without the usual trappings of an on-camera handshake or a joint statement.

“There were areas in which there was swift agreement,” Netanyahu told the cabinet about the talks.

“In areas where there was disagreement, we tried to take, and we did take, certain steps to narrow the gaps in order to move the (peace) process forward,” he said, without elaborating.

U.S. PRESSURE

Resisting U.S. pressure, Netanyahu has said Israel would not stop building in West Bank territory it annexed to East Jerusalem after capturing the two areas in a 1967 war.

Netanyahu has vowed to find a way out of the faceoff, but a Friday meeting of senior cabinet members to discuss measures that might persuade the Palestinians to resume peace talks adjourned without any breakthrough.

“I think we will continue these efforts. We are continuing them today and in the coming days,” Netanyahu said at the cabinet meeting.

Netanyahu’s government is dominated by pro-settler parties, including his own, and meeting any U.S. demands on settlements — after a 10-month partial construction freeze he announced in November — could endanger his coalition.

Citing historical and Biblical links, Israel considers all of Jerusalem its capital, a claim that is not recognised internationally. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they seek in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

New Zealand Cricket deny Howard snub over ICC vice-president role

Melbourne, Mar 24 (ANI): New Zealand cricket chief Justin Vaughan has said that there are plans to invite former Australian premier John Howard as a special guest at the NZC meeting in May, and refuted reports about snubbing the ICC vice-president nominee.

The Dominion Post report claimed on Tuesday that New Zealand Cricket rejected an approach last month from Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland for Howard to meet Kiwi cricket executives during the first Test in Wellington, which ended yesterday.

Vaughan replied that Howard’s visit would be pointless in an official capacity because the NZC board could not be convened to meet him.

It is understood the request was aimed at easing tensions between Australian and Kiwi cricket powerbrokers after respected New Zealand official Sir John Anderson lost the presidency vote to Howard.

Vaughan denied that the NZC had snubbed Howard. He said plans were afoot to invite the former politician to the organisation’s next board meeting in May to help iron out any differences.

“Some people have jumped to conclusions. It”s a long bow to suggest we have snubbed John Howard,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Vaughan, as saying.

“We have a good relationship with Cricket Australia. John Howard has a bit of learning to do to get up to speed [with cricket administration] and hopefully we can help him in that regard,” he added.

Former Kiwi Test bowler Simon Doull captured the sentiment of many New Zealanders when he said Anderson was a superior choice to Howard.

“In my eyes, Sir John has far more cricket knowledge and background, whereas John Howard has more of a political background,” he said. (ANI)

Research threatens to spark fresh ‘ageism’ controversy at BBC

London, Mar 22(ANI): The BBC is at the centre of another ageism controversy after a research revealed that only one in five of its main channel presenters and acting talent are over 50.

According to the Older Faces audit commissioned by Anchor, England’s largest provider of housing and care for older people, BBC1 trails ITV in giving opportunities to seniors, where ITV1 employs 27 per cent.

BBC1, however, performed better than Channel 4, where only 12 percent of presenters and actors were over 50.

The study also revealed TV’s snub for older women, as it found that only one in five of BBC’s female presenters were over 50, compared to one in four of men.

Anchor chief executive Jane Ashcroft, who is writing to BBC and ITV chiefs to call for changes, said that the problem is perpetuated by the media’s fixation with youth.

“As a culture we dramatically undervalue the contribution older people make to society,” Daily Express quoted Ashcroft, as saying.

“It is scandalous that the over-50s are not represented more fairly on television. Rather than condemning older presenters and actors to the scrap heap, it is time for television executives to embrace the wealth of talent and experience they can offer,” he added.

Meanwhile, commenting over the research, a BBC spokesman said: “We do not believe that a one-week sample study is an accurate reflection of the BBC’s output throughout the year.” (ANI)

Champions Trophy snub disappoints Razzaq

Lahore, Sep.19 (ANI): Experienced Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq is disappointed over his non-selection for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Razzaq said he was surprised at not being selected.

“It came as a huge setback to learn that I was not in the final team. Since my comeback to the national team, I had been working very hard to play in this elite tournament,” Razzaq said.

Razzaq said his attempts failed to convince the selectors

“It is a big tournament and you get a chance to prove yourself against the top teams. I was working hard to convince everyone I should be in the side,” The Daily Times quoted Razzaq, as saying.

The seven member selection committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had controversially recalled paceman Mohammad Asif and opener Imran Nazir, but omitted all-rounder Abdul Razzaq from their 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy beginning September 22 in South Africa. (ANI)

Clark hopes next generation of Oz cricketers value country above the dollar

Sydney, Sep.17 (ANI): Experienced Australian seamer Stuart Clark has warned that he can only hope the next generation of Australian cricketers values playing for their country ahead of chasing the almighty dollar on offer in the Indian Premier League and next month’s Champions League.

Skipper Ricky Ponting, who said he expected more people to follow in the footsteps of English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff and pursue the shorter version of the game, backed up Clark.

According to the Daily Telegraph, former one-day star Michael Bevan also weighed into the money-v-country debate when he questioned how much longer cricketers would be prepared to support the Test scene now that there were lucrative alternatives.

“What scares me the most is where does it leave the game if people just go chasing large sums of money for a bit of hit-and-giggle,” Clark told The Big Sports Breakfast.

“I think we as players all owe it to Test cricket to try and keep it afloat. I know the administration is working hard at it, but I personally hold grave fears for where the game is heading,” he added.

Clark said he had noticed youngsters at NSW getting excited about the money at next month’s Champions League in India, which offers a three million dollar purse to the winner and could earn the players 130,000 dollars each – the equivalent of a top-end state contract.

Ponting said more players could snub Test cricket to copy Flintoff.

“I think it probably could happen more and more especially with guys retiring from Test match cricket and wanting to play only the shorter versions of the game,” he said.

Bevan, who scored nearly 7000 runs in 232 one-dayers for Australia, told The Daily Telegraph: “I’d like to hope there is a strong allegiance shown by the players to Test cricket, but up until what point they continue to do that I’m not sure.” (ANI)

Top white lie to shun sex: I’m too tired

London, Sept 16 (ANI): The humble headache has had its day as far as excuses to avoid sex are concerned, for now the reigning white lie to snub a romp is ‘I’m too tired’, says a new survey.

“I’ve got a headache” has lost its lustre and fallen to number three in the list behind “I’m not in the mood”.

Other white lies to make the top five included “I’ve got to get up early in the morning” and “I’m pre-occupied with work”.he conclusion was made after studying 4,000 adults.

The not-so-kinky research also revealed that one in five Brits regularly make excuses to avoid having sex.

Seven out of 10 said they were often too exhausted to enjoy sex. And four out of 10 said the recession had played havoc with their sex life, the study found, reports The Telegraph.

A spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which carried out the study, said: “The humble headache has had its day as far as excuses are concerned.

“Tiredness plays a much bigger part in our reasons not to climb between the sheets these days and enjoy some quality time together.

“And its hardly surprising when we are all working longer hours than ever before and have so many things to worry about.

“Fears over whether will be able to pay our mortgages or even whether we will have a job in a month’s time are bound to affect our bedroom performance.

“It was intriguing to see just how the recession has affected our passion levels too.”

The report also found men are more likely to make excuses than women with 27 per cent admitting they often avoided sex compared to 18 per cent of women.

Top Ten Sex Excuses

1. Too tired

2. I’m not in the mood

3. I’ve got a headache

4. I’ve got to get up in the morning

5. I’m pre-occupied with work

6. I’m angry with you

7. I can hear one of the children

8. You need a shower

9. I’ve got a bad back

10. Too soon in our relationship. (ANI)

MJ’s secret sister JohVonnie reveals her ‘snub’ pain

London, September 14 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s half-sister has revealed that the pop legend wasn’t warm to her when she met him during a family get together.

JohVonnie Jackson, whose mum was a lover of MJ’s dad Joe, is close to her father.

She claims that the Jacksons have shunned her for 35 years but was once invited to the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker’s Neverland ranch in 2003 when the clan got together.

Also, JohVonnie alleges that she wasn’t allowed to talk to either the late singer or her half-sister Janet when she attended their concerts.

“I feel rejected by some of my family. It’s upsetting and hurtful,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

Referring to her meeting with the late singer she said: “It was a big moment for me. But Michael was looking at me and seemed cold. He just said, ‘Hi’ and then he saw my daughter Yasmine and was fascinated with her.”

Jackson made a mistake pronouncing her niece’s name and called her ‘Jasmine,’ which JohVonnie corrected.

She recollected: “He said, ‘OK, Yasmine with a Y’, and that was it. He never acknowledged that I was his sister, there was no hug or kiss, not even a handshake. No physical contact at all.

“I wanted to embrace him. I thought he would want to go some place quiet and sit and talk with me and ask me about my life and get to know me a little better.

“It was very hurtful. He was not interested at all.

“With my daughter he was totally different. She got hugs and kisses, everything I didn’t get. I was a little jealous. But there was a bunch of people there and I never did get a chance to speak to Michael properly. Again, there was this theme that I felt shut out.”

Apparently, JohVonnie spent that night at a nearby hotel and returned to Neverland the next day but she didn’t get to see her iconic half-brother.

She said: “Michael was in the main house. Yasmine and Paris were off playing for hours. Paris is such a sweet girl.”

Though she said she talked to brother Jermaine and sister Rebbie but insists: “None of my other siblings acknowledged me much.” (ANI)

Formula One is not a sport insists Sports Minister Gill

New Delhi, Aug 31(ANI): Union Sports Minister MS Gill on Monday stuck to his remarks over Formula One (F1), and said that it is a source of entertainment and the Ministry’s focus is on other sports.

Addressing media in the national capital Gill said: “I will stand by my earlier comment that F1 is not a sport. Our view on F1 not being a sport was taken months ago. This is the most expensive entertainment event in the west. The technology used for the same is far beyond anything here.”

“We are focused in promoting other sports. What they want to do is their business, we are nowhere concerned with that,” he added.

Gill’s comments were a snub to Force India owner Vijay Mallya, who had said that F1 was indeed a sport and was a viable sport in India.

“When hundreds of millions of people worldwide follow it as a sport, what makes them believe otherwise?” Mallya had said.

It is believed that Sports Minister’s comment would have a significant influence on Mallaya’s dreams of bringing F1 to India in 2011.

According to reports, JPSK Sports, promoter of the event in India, has already acquired land for construction of a F1 track in Greater Noida and have started building the track. (ANI)
