Tibetans-in-exile at Leh react strongly to Chinese incursion

Leh, Sep 15 (ANI): Members of the exiled Tibetan community at Leh reacted strongly to the recent Chinese trespass into India’s border areas in Ladakh region.

Such concern was expressed by functionaries of Tibetan fora based at Leh on Monday.

Warning India of Chinese designs, Kunzang Dechen, President of Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Leh, termed China as the biggest threat to India.

“China these days is a great threat to India. I have seen through channels…that the Chinese are entering to the border but when Tibet is an independent nation, when Tibet is in between them, China has nothing to bother even. From Indian point of view, this must be settled through Tibet and not through China,” Deche added.

Sonam Gyatso, President of Tibetan Market Welfare Association, Leh, said that if the recent developments in Ladakh are ignored by the government of India, then Ladakh would also meet the same fate as Tibet.

“The one and half kilometres incursion by the Chinese troops in Ladakh…. written at the border area in Chinese ‘Republic of China’, all these will have a bad impact on Ladakh. In Pangong Lake, first they said 45 kilometres is under China and 45 kilometres is under India, which they (Chinese) have extended to 50 kilometres and if Ladakhi government and the authorities ignore this issue then whatever happened in Tibet, the same would happen in Ladakh also since Ladakh is a very isolated region,” Gyatso added.

Officials sources have said that Chinese troops entered nearly 1.5 kilometres into the Indian territory near Mount Gya, which is recognised as the international border by India and China, and painted the word ‘China’ in Cantonese on the boulders and rocks there with red spray paint. The incursions were reported from the area generally referred in the Chumar sector in east of Leh.

The 22,420 ft Mount Gya, also known as “fair princess of snow” by the Army is located at the tri-junction of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, and Tibet. Its boundary was marked during the British era and is regarded as International border by the two countries.

The border patrol discovered the red paint markings on various rocks and boulders along the Zulung La (pass) on July 31 and the Chinese had entered into the area and written “China” all over the place, the sources said.

Indian soldiers later erased the text, writing ‘India’ instead.

This is not the first such reported intrusion. On June 21 Chinese helicopters had violated the Indian air space along the Line of Actual Control in Chumar region. The Chinese troops also reportedly dropped expired tinned food packets in the area. (ANI)

Climate change is faster in Arctic than in any other location on Earth

Washington, September 13 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Helsinki in Finland have participated in two new studies, which indicate that climate change is progressing faster in Arctic areas than in any other location on Earth.

The study results indicate that the Arctic eco-system has experienced immense changes in the last twenty years.

At many levels, the changes impact the eco-system services that the environment provides for people: the effects extend to the adequacy of natural resources, food production, climate temperature, and result in changes to the landscape.

The changes in the northern nature can be interpreted as an advance warning of what is to be expected on all latitudes.

The results show that spring begins considerably sooner than before.

The blossoming and pollination period of plants starts as much as twenty days sooner in comparison to the situation ten years ago.

Predators are in dire straits because nutrition is now available too soon in relation to the otherwise favourable nesting period.

The distribution of many insects has moved even more north. European winter moths, for example, have destroyed extensive birch areas in Lapland after moving north.

Species invading new areas might supersede the original species in the area, which is already happening to Arctic foxes, which are currently being overrun by red foxes.

Ivory gulls, ringed seals, polar bears and narwhals are examples of species with a small distribution and specialized habitats, and such species will be the first ones to suffer from the changes.

Climate change also has indirect effects that appear in the interaction between different species.

Olivier Gilg and academy professor Ilkka Hanski from the University of Helsinki have teamed up with Benoit Sittler, a researcher from the University of Freiburg, and studied the waning of the previously cyclical population dynamics of the collared lemming in Greenland.

With mathematical models, the researchers showed that the drastic change in the population dynamics of collared lemmings is explained by the fact that snow melts sooner than before.

The lemmings do not procreate as long as before below the snow, and are also easier for predators to hunt.

In addition, frost-melt events in winter form ice layers in the snow layer or at the tundra’s surface, which is why the lemmings are unable to find food like they used to. (ANI)

Flood situation grim in Madhya Pradesh

Hoshangabad (MP), Sep 12 (ANI): Floods situation continued to remain grim in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh.

Incessant rains, which have lashed Madhya Pradesh for last few days, have led to water overflowing many dams, submerging low lying areas.

State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made an aerial survey of the flood-affected region on Friday.

“River Narmada is flowing above the danger level and due to this many villages have been inundated and water has entered many houses. Tributaries flowing in the catchments areas are also flowing above the danger level due to incessant rains and this has resulted in crop damage,” he added.

Air Force helicopters were pressed into rescue and army men took marooned people to safety.

State’s disaster management agencies and district collectors have been alerted. A relief and rescue plan has been worked out in case the situation worsens.

Monsoon has revived over northern India after deficit rainfall in July and August, bringing rains in the Indo-Gangetic plains and snow in the Himalayas.

Two days of rainy weather has caused floods as water level rose in rivers and reservoirs. (ANI)

Polar bears face extinction in less than 70 years because of global warming

London, September 11 (ANI): A new research has warned that polar bears face extinction in less than 70 years because of global warming.

“Recent projections suggest polar bears could be extinct within 70 years,” Eric Post, associate professor of biology at Penn State University, who led the latest study, told the Telegraph.

“But we think this could be a very conservative estimate. The outlook is very bleak for them and other creatures such as ringed seals,” he said.

Melting ice is causing Polar bear numbers to drop dramatically, scientists warn.

“The rate at which sea ice is disappearing is accelerating and these creatures rely on it for shelter, hunting and breeding. If this goes, so do they,” said Post.

Others also at risk include ivory gulls, Pacific walruses, ringed and hooded seals and narwhals, small whales with long, spiral tusks.

One of the problems is that other animals are moving north, encroaching on their territory, spurred by increasing temperatures, pushing out native species.

The animals are also struggling with the loss of sea ice.

The international team analyzed average temperature in the Arctic over the last 150 years and warned many animals that are dependent upon the stability and persistence of sea ice are faring especially badly.

Polar bears and ringed seals both give birth in lairs or caves under the snow and can lose many newborn pups when the lairs collapse in unusually early spring rains, triggered by climate change.

Among animals migrating further north are red foxes, which are driving out the smaller Arctic foxes. (ANI)

Tourists enjoy fresh snowfall in Himachal Pradesh

Rohtang Pass (Manali), Sep 10 (ANI): Tourists enjoyed fresh snowfall in the high peaks of Rohtang Pass above Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

The 13,050 feet high Rohtang pass, covered with six inches thick cover of snow, has had an unusually early snowfall this year.

Tourists made merry on the snow-covered slopes.

“We came here for snowfall and we have finally got to see it. We never saw snowfall in our life and this was like a dream come true. Rohtang is a very good place and I would love to come here again and again,” said Vinod, a tourist.

Thousands of tourists visit Rohtang Pass every year and enjoy the snowfall.

The pass is the gateway to the remote and rain shadow Himalayan region of Ladakh. (ANI)

Gen Kapoor flags in all-women Army team that scaled Siachen’s highest peak

New Delhi, Sep 9 (ANI): Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor flagged in the first ever women expedition team for army corps of engineers to Indira Col, Siachen, today at Army Headquarters here.

The Indian Army has achieved another milestone in the history of Indian mountaineering by undertaking an ‘All Women Officers Expedition’ to Siachen glacier.

The Corps of Engineers in consonance with its spirit of adventure has organised this unique expedition to the highest and coldest battlefield in the world, Siachen Glacier, a junction point of three countries – India, China and Pakistan.

The expedition led by Major Megha Astagikar summitted Indira Col, located at an altitude of 20,187 feet, after trekking 103.10 kilometers on August 15, which coincided with the 62nd Independence Day.

Enroute to Indira Col, the team halted at eight camps to carry out acclimatisation, training and build-up of essential logistics. Braving inclement weather and extremely difficult terrain conditions, Indira Col was summitted well before the planned schedule.

The team traversed across the most treacherous high altitude terrain characterised by high avalanche-prone snow bound area with deep crevasses, steep ice-walls and scarce oxygen.

The 17 women officers expedition team was flagged-off by the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Noble Thamburaj on August 3.

Prior to undertaking the expedition, a detailed planning and rigorous training in basic ice-craft and mountaineering skills was carried out by the team at the Army Mountaineering Institute, Siachen Base Camp.

Major AR Ramakrishnan, the trainer of the expedition team, inspite of being a battle casualty during ‘Operation Vijay’ summitted Indira Col alongwith the team making the achievement of the expedition spectacular and creditable. (ANI)

Roads made of solar panels may solve energy crisis

London, September 9 (ANI): The U.S. Department of Transportation is funding a new research project aimed at replacing asphalt with solar panels as the basic material for making roads, in a bid to solve the crisis of electricity.

As part of the scheme, a U.S. firm called Solar Roadways has won a grant of 100,000 dollars from the Government to carry on with its work on a prototype glass solar cell panel that may one day turn motorways into major energy sources.

It is expected that these panels will be capable of generating enough power to support local communities, according to reports.

The panels would also be covered with a mosaic of small lights, which could be illuminated to provide road markings, and warning messages to drivers.

They could also be embedded with heaters to keep the road clear by melting snow and ice.

The company believes that a four-lane, one-mile stretch of road made from the 12 ft by 12 ft panels, each capable of producing 7.6 kilowatt hours of electricity each day, can generate enough power for 500 homes.

Solar Roadways plans to develop its idea to allow the energy produced to be channelled into the national grid, as well as sold to drivers of electric cars on the roadside.

“This feature packed system will become an intelligent highway that will double as a secure, intelligent, decentralised, self-healing power grid which will enable a gradual weaning from fossil fuels,” the Telegraph quoted the company as saying in a statement. (ANI)

Darjeeling zoo, known for its rare Red Pandas, has poor security measures

Darjeeling (West Bengal), Sep 6(ANI): The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan zoological park in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, which is known for its Red Pandas, lacks security measures, which a zoo of any international caliber is expected to have.

The zoo is the only specialised centre in the country, which is globally recognised for its conservation breeding programmes of Red Panda, Snow Leopards, Tibetan Wolf and other highly endangered animal species.

“You see when it is raining you went inside so if anyone just choose a rainy day then no one is going to see when you are going in, you can just walk through the doors, you don’t get checks for anything. So, it may be possible that if you really want to steal one (animal) you could do it quite easily,” said William Menon, a tourist from England.

However, forest officials claim that sufficient security measures are maintained in the park and said that their system was foolproof.

“We divide the security of our zoological garden in six different zones, each strictly monitored by two guards both day and night we don’t think stealing of animals is possible,” said Purna Singh, Assistant Animal Supervisor of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park.

The Central Zoo Authority has designated this zoo for the conservation and breeding of 10 endangered high altitude animal species including Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Tibetan Wolf, Blue Sheep, Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan Blood Pheasant and Satyr Tragopan.

Vocational training programme for unemployed youth in Himachal

Kufri, Sep. 6 (ANI): Unemployed youth in Kufri region of Himachal Pradesh are delighted after a special vocational course has been introduced at a Hotel Management Institute to enable them earn livelihood in tourism sector.

Introduced under the Central Government, the tourism and hospitality requires candidates to have had school education till standard eight as minimum eligibility.

The tourism-based course, which can be completed within six to eight weeks of training, is aimed to enable the local youths to get into jobs.

The enrolled students obtain free training, uniform and stipend of rupees 1,500 to 2000 at the institute.

“They (unemployed youth) after doing this course whose entire expense is being met by government including education, uniform, training equipments can explore job opportunities. We will also provide certificates after the completion of the course. Moreover, industrial training for a brief period so that after they pass out from this they can have employment opportunities,” said Dipankar Mukherjee, Principal, Institute of Hotel Management, Kufri.

The local youth are enthusiastic to pursue this course. The students are being trained in cooking, catering apart from other nuances of the trade.

“This course will be very helpful. Even though in 8 weeks time you can’t learn everything but the course will help to get job opportunities,” said Poonam Sharma, a student.

Even graduates are showing interest in this special course, as they know it will prepare them for many employment opportunities.

“This course assures job for us. There are job opportunities in tourism sector as hundreds of tourists come to visit Himachal…. We are not only learning cooking and catering but also this course is teaching us the real sense of hospitality… this will tell us how to help and guide tourists,” said a graduate trainee.

British wartime agents foiled Nazi plot before D-Day

London, Sep.1 (ANI): British agents foiled a desperate German plot to monitor troop movements just days before D-Day, according to newly-released MI5 files on the Nazis.

During the Second World War, Iceland became tactically important for both sides and Germany sent a series of spies to gather weather information about the area to send back to the Luftwaffe.

But by May 1944 they had become convinced that any naval assault on their forces would be launched from Iceland, MI5 files released on Tuesday by the National Archives in Kew show.

According to The Telegraph, the Germans put together a hurried plan to send three spies to the country to monitor troop movements in a bid to foil Allied attempts to liberate France.

Three Allied forces agents, named Miller, Hoan and Frick, were having dinner in their hotel in Seydisfjordur, Iceland, on the evening of May 5, 1944, when they got wind of the scheme.

A seal hunter had spotted three strangers behaving suspiciously near Borgarfjordur.

The agents tried to alert an Allied ship anchored off the coast in that area but were told it could take hours before it got up enough steam to sail, by which time the men could be deep into the Icelandic wilderness.

So they persuaded the seal hunter to be their guide, borrowed a boat and in the early hours of the morning landed near where the men had been seen.

They hiked across the snow, through the night, following the faint trail left by the spies until finally, at 6 a.m. the following day, they spotted them.

Their report notes: “We cocked our pistols and quickened our pace.”

They surrounded the men, who very quickly confessed to being German soldiers, but claimed they had been sent only to gather meteorological information.

Ernst Fresenius, an avowed Nazi loyalist, was in fact the only German. The other two men, Hjalti Bjornsson and Sigurdur Juliusson, were Icelanders who had been hired as mercenaries by the Nazi military.

They were frogmarched to a farmhouse two miles away where Miller and Frick kept them prisoner while Hoan went back to find the radio transmitter the men had hidden.

A search revealed that the men had 9,000 pounds of sterling, dollars and German marks on them.

It took six interrogation sessions back in UK to establish that the arrested men were in fact trained spies looking for information on troop and naval movements and ships in fjords.

All three were handed over to the American forces and their file ends with a report from the interrogation camp. (ANI)

Rare animals getting old in Nainital zoo

Nainital, Aug 25 (ANI): Ageing of rare animals in the zoological park in Nainital becomes a cause of concern for the authorities.

The ‘Bharat Ratna Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo’ is one of its kind, which provides safe haven to rare Himalayan black bears, snow leopards, and Siberian tigers and other high altitude fauna.

Authorities are now concerned that the rare Siberian tigers, bears and leopards are now ageing and have thus asked central zoo authorities for new species.

“Our Siberian tiger is almost 15 years old and its getting ere old. We lost recently one snow leopard and three years ago, we lost Siberian tiger also. So I wrote to central zoo authority through proper channels to get all these animals from other zoos. Central zoo authority also agrees to give us animals from other zoos,” said Bajulal T.R, director, Bharat Ratna Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo.

Veterinary doctor says that special arrangements have been made and normal monitoring is done keeping in mind the age of animals

“Some of our animals are ageing which means that they are crossing the age of 12-13 years. Average age of an animal is generally about 20 years. Special arrangements have been made for the ageing animals like they are given boneless meat. And multi-vitamins and anti-oxidants are mixed in their food,” said L K Sanwal, veterinary doctor.

The Zoo was established in 1984 with the objective of conserving and protecting the wild life and bio-diversity of the hill region of Uttarakhand. Spread over an area of 4.693 hectares, it houses some of the rare and endangered species of animals like Siberian tiger, Himalayan black bear, hill fox, palm civet cat, goral, silver pheasants, barking deer and sambhar deer.

Utilizing the available topography and geography of the region, the authorities have developed appropriate facilities for animals and birds on the hilly sides of the location. By Vipul Goel (ANI)

‘Spiderbots’ inside Mount St Helens may detect impending volcanic eruption

Washington, August 15 (ANI): NASA scientists have placed about a dozen monitoring ‘spiderbots’ inside the volcanic crater in Mount St Helens in the US, which are high-tech devices that can detect an impending eruption.

Mount St. Helens is one of the most active volcanoes in the US. Its most devastating eruption in 1980, and the most recent seen here in 2004.

According to a report in National Geographic News, about a dozen so-called Spiders were placed on Mount St. Helens in July.

The pods, designed to go where no human can, were lowered by helicopter inside and around the volcano center.

“We can detect the differences between snow falling off of a branch, an animal running by, wind, a thunderstorm and the very subtle signatures of magma moving at depth, perhaps even kilometers beneath the surface of the earth,” said Steve Chien, Principal Scientist, Autonomous Systems, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory .

The pods form a virtual wireless network and communicate with each other and a NASA satellite called Earth Observing-1, or EO-1.

Each pod contains a seismometer, a GPS receiver, an infrared sounder to sense explosions, and a lightning detector.

According to Chien, “They have the ability to recognize different kinds of events such as seismic events, earthquakes, that are basically indications that something is happening at the volcano.”

“In the context of volcano monitoring, we want to have the best educated guess to make decisions that will save life and properties,” said Sharon Kedar, Geophysicist, NASA /Jet Propulsion Laboratoy.

NASA would like to someday use this same technology on the surface of Mars to study atmospheric events like dust storms, which are mini-tornadoes, as well as seismic activity. (ANI)

Treelines not universally responding to climate warming as expected

Washington, August 13 (ANI): In a new research, scientists have found that treelines are not universally responding to climate warming by advancing as expected.

Treelines are the elevation or latitudinal limits where trees are capable of growth or survival and are considered to be early indicators of climate warming because they are constrained primarily by cold temperatures.

Summer temperature is widely considered to be the primary control of treeline formation and maintenance, whereas winter temperatures have previously been considered less critical because of the insulative effects of snow.

This study reveals how winter warming has overturned this prevailing view.

“Average temperatures have risen over the last century, with a more pronounced and rapid change at high altitudes and latitudes,” said Melanie Harsch from the Bio-Protection Research Centre in New Zealand.

“Within these zones, treelines are thought to be more temperature sensitive and so the rise in summer temperatures should result in an advance of treeline position,” she added.

Harsch and her co-authors conducted a multivariate meta-analysis, using a global dataset of 166 treeline sites with temperature data taken from the closest climate station to each site.

The team used this data to analyze treeline advance throughout the 20th century and consider the contributing factors to that advance.

The team found that only 87 of the 166 sites (52 percent) had advanced while simultaneously the mean annual local temperatures had increased at 111 of the 166 sites at an average rate of 0.013 degrees Celsius a year (or 1 degrees C in 77 years).

Of the remaining sites, 77 (47 percent) remained stable and only two (1 percent) had treelines that receded.

Both of the receding sites showed evidence of disturbance, indicating that regardless of form, location or degree of temperature change experienced over the last century, treeline positions have either advanced or remained static.

“Surprisingly these results reveal that treelines are not universally responding to climate warming by advancing, as expected,” said Harsch.

Another surprising result of this study was the association with winter, rather than summer, warming.

These results provide no evidence of the prevailing view that high altitude and latitude treelines are controlled only by summer temperatures.

Instead, they show that treelines are more likely to advance at sites that had warmed during the winter months.

It is known, at least in northern latitudes that climate-associated changes in winter conditions are on average more extreme than changes in summer conditions.

“These results show that treelines are responding to warming, but are not consistent in that only half of the sites showed signs of advance despite most sites experiencing warming,” said Harsch. (ANI)

Giant Martian egg cups could be used to trace the Red Planet’s climate

London, July 14 (ANI): A new study has suggested that craters embedded on pedestals that tower above the Martian landscape like giant egg cups could be used to trace the planet’s climate.

‘Pedestal’ craters were gouged out by impacts, like other craters, but stand out because they sit atop plateaus that loom an average of 50 metres above the Martian surface.

It’s not clear exactly how the pedestals formed.

According to a report in New Scientist, a comprehensive catalogue of the objects is lending weight to the idea that the pedestals may conceal ice-rich soil from previous eras, when the planet’s spin axis tilted at a different angle than it does today.

Seth Kadish of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and colleagues identified 2696 pedestal craters in the planet’s mid- and low-latitudes from images taken primarily by the thermal imager aboard NASA’s Mars Odyssey spacecraft.

The craters seem to be concentrated at the mid-latitudes, with very few found at the planet’s equator.

About 3 per cent of them have depressions around their bases that resemble areas in Antarctica where permafrost ice vaporizes, creating pits in the soil left behind.

The team said that strengthens the hypothesis that the pedestals were created from soil that was enriched in ice during a period when the Martian poles pointed more towards the sun and its mid-latitudes were colder.

Because Mars does not have a massive satellite that stabilises it, like Earth’s moon, the tilt of its axis is thought to change regularly on scales of tens of thousands of years.

When the planet is tilted most drastically on its side, the planet’s poles receive a lot of sunshine. Any water locked in ice there is thought to vaporize and move towards the equator, where it falls as snow.

Tens of metres of snow are thought to be deposited on the planet’s mid-latitudes during these episodes.

Pedestal craters may preserve regions with this ancient snow.

The researchers suspect the impact of the meteorite that created each pedestal crater could somehow ‘armour’ the ground in the area, producing a top layer that protected ice from sublimating into gas during warmer periods.

The unprotected ice surrounding the armoured area, however, would eventually disappear when the planet’s tilt changed and the area warmed.

That would leave behind the modern-day, ice-laden pedestals that can be more than 100 metres thick.

“These pedestals represent almost like a cookie-cutter section of past icy, dust-rich layers,” Kadish said. (ANI)

Factors other than trapped ice limit dune movement on Mars

Washington, July 8 (ANI): A study has determined that snow and ice trapped inside dunes on Mars does not entirely stop their movement, a finding which indicates that other factors are limiting the dune movement.

Planetary scientists have monitored some Martian sand dunes for more than 30 years, and the dunes have not moved during that time, leading scientists to question whether snow and ice trapped inside the dunes might be preventing movement.

However, a recent study, led by Mary Bourke, a senior research scientist at the Tucson-based Planetary Science Institute, shows that snow and ice are not enough in themselves to stop dune movement.

While trapped ice and snow impedes movement of sand dunes in polar climates, compared to their counterparts in warmer areas, this does not entirely stop dune movement, the study shows.

“This indicates that other factors are limiting dune movement,” said Bourke.

Bourke also showed that two small dunes recently disappeared on Mars. The dunes, which were 20 meters wide (about 65 feet) and located in the north polar region of Mars, were completely eroded away over a period of 5.7 Earth years.

“This (dune disappearance) is fantastic new data, showing that sand is transported on Mars where and when the wind energy is available,” Bourke said. “But the bigger, larger dunes on Mars are not moving, at least in the areas we studied,” she added.

In the most recent study, Bourke and her colleagues used vertical aerial photos and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data to estimate dune migration rates in Antarctica’s Victoria Valley dune field.

The photos, taken between 1961 and 2001, came from the USGS Antarctic Resource Center.

These dunes are known to be covered by seasonal snowfalls and have snow and ice layers trapped inside.

Bourke found that the dunes migrated about 1.5 meters (5 feet) per year, which is small compared to the distance covered by dunes in warm deserts, which can be as high as 30-70 meters (about 100 to 230 feet) a year.

Factors limiting dune movement on Mars would include the planet’s thin atmosphere, which requires very high wind speeds to provide the force needed to move sand, and the water and carbon-dioxide frosts that cover dunes in Mars’ polar regions for 70 percent of the year. (ANI)

Army discovers bodies of six terrorists found buried under an avalanche

Gulrez (Jammu and Kashmir), July 4 (ANI): The army has recovered bodies of six terrorists found burried in the snow in the Gurez sector of the state.

According to army sources, the terrorists had attempted to enter Indian territory in March this year, but heavy snow and an avalanche claimed the lives of six to eight of them.

They said that it had taken them almost three months to recover the bodies because of inclement weather and heavy snow.

A search is on to locate the remaining bodies, they said, adding that the dead terrorists were well equipped and clothed to infiltrate through the snow laden ridge lines of North Kashmir.

Six AK- 47 rifles have also been recovered, they said. (ANI)

Dharamsala reels under acute water shortage

Dharamsala, July 2 (ANI): Residents of Dharamsala are facing a severe water shortage.

People are now relying on mountain spring water for daily use.

However, the spring water is far too less to meet average demand.

Even the famous ‘Dal Lake’ has completely dried up, resulting in the death of fish.

A resident, who had come to fetch water from a spring, said that filling water and then taking it back was quite problematic.

“The water comes after every two days. Sometimes, it doesn’t come for days,” claimed Tilak, a resident.

S K Malhotra, the Superintending Engineer, Irrigation and Public Health, said the late arrival of the monsoon has affected water supply by 20-25 per cent.

“If there is snow in the mountains, then the supply of water would be good. But unfortunately, this year, the amount of snowfall was less. We received minimal rainfall due to which the water supply has fallen by 20 to 25 per cent,” Malhotra added.

He said the State Government has plans to deal with the crisis. (ANI)

Blackberry saves Brit skier from 700ft death plunge

London, June 29 (ANI): A 52-year-old skier miraculously survived the harrowing 700 ft fall, courtesy his Blackberry phone.

David Fitzherbert was skiing off-piste down a glacier in the Matterhorn and Monterosa peaks in Switzerland when the snow gave way.

However, he got caught between the two rocks due to the 1/2inch-wide Blackberry in his breast pocket.

“The snow gave way beneath me and I fell down a very deep crevasse,” the Sun quoted Fitzherbert as saying.

“After 70 feet it narrowed and I became stuck like a cork in a bottle between the walls.

“Fortunately the extra inches of the Blackberry were enough to block the fall,” he added.

Fitzherbert broke his jaw, smashed his teeth, cracked a bone in his chest, and nearly tore his nose off.

His mountain guide made a distress call, and a mountain rescue team came to dig him out.

“I was stuck so fast they had to get a drill to dig away at the ice around me. I was eventually winched out by the helicopter rescue team,” David added. (ANI)

TERI chief says Indian Army’s biggest enemy is climate change

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI/ Business Wire India): Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has warned the Indian Army that climate change could prove to be their biggest enemy, as melting snow could open a new passage for terrorists.

“Climate change poses new threats to India. Melting snows in the north open up passages for terrorists, just as melting glaciers affect water supply in the subcontinent’s northern part, sharpening possibility of conflict with our neighbours. Changing rainfall patterns affect rain fed agriculture, worsening poverty which can be exploited by others,” Dr. Pachauri said while delivering the keynote address at the convocation ceremony at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow.

He cautioned that climate change might force millions of ‘climate refugees’ across India’s border, posing a new challenge to nation’s armed forces.

“Our defence forces might find themselves torn between humanitarian relief operations and guarding our borders against climate refugees, as rising sea-levels swamp low-lying areas, forcing millions of ‘climate refugees’ across India’s border,” he added.

As the Chief Guest, Pachauri presented the Chief of Army Staff Trophy and other awards to the winners.

In his Valedictory Address, Dr. Pachauri complimented the officers for the exemplary work they have done during various natural calamities across the length and breadth of the country.

He praised the Corps of Signals for their good work in the field of modern communications and computer networks and their remarkable use of advanced systems of Optical Fiber, Satellite Communications, and other networks to conduct its operations, including Low Intensity Conflict Operations and UN missions.

The Commandant, Military College of Telecommunication Engineering in his farewell address, exhorted the passing out officers to apply their knowledge in their units and to keep abreast with the latest in the field of technology. (ANI)

Shri Amarnath Yatra suspended from Jammu

Jammu, June 24 (ANI): The ongoing Shri Amarnath Yatra had to be suspended from Jammu base camp on Wednesday due to a large number of devotees stranded at transit base camp at Baltal.

Over 15,000 pilgrims are stranded at the transit camp.

According to police officials in Jammu, “No batch was allowed to Baltal base camp from here today. The yatra was suspended as there is a heavy rush of stranded devotees at Baltal.”

Over 2,700 pilgrims have been left waiting for resumption of the Yatra at Jammu base camp in Bhagwati Nagar due to the suspension.

Jammu and Kashmir government and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has set up three base camps at Bhagwati Nagar in Jammu, at Nunwan in Pahalgam and at Baltal to arrange for boarding and lodging facilities to pilgrims visiting cave shrine.

While, Jammu base camp facilitates boarding and lodging for over 20,000 pilgrims at a time, Baltal and Nunwan can house over 5,000 pilgrims at a time.

About 70,000 pilgrims have paid obeisance at the 3888 mt Amarnath cave shrine till now.

On Tuesday, a high level team headed by SASB Chief Executive Officer B B Viyas carried out an aerial survey of the traditional Pahalgam route to take a final decision on opening of the route, which has been covered with snow for last few days, to the pilgrims.

The team has submitted its report on resumption of yatra via traditional Pahalgam route to Governor N N Vohra. (ANI)
