Police hunt for armed robbers

Police fear two armed men who robbed a TOTE Tasmania outlet in Hobart last night could strike again.

They are searching for two men who they say threatened a TOTE staff member and a customer with large knives, one the size of a machete, at the Derwent Park outlet.

Police say the offenders then fled with cash from TOTE as well as money from both victims’ wallets.

Inspector Ian Whish-Wilson from Glenorchy CIB says a team of detectives is reviewing closed circuit television footage of the incident and would also like to speak to witnesses.

“They were wearing black balaclavas, they were also wearing blue overalls and sneaker-type shoes,” he said.

“Obviously it’s a concern that people are out there committing this type of crime and we [ask] that the public give us any information that’s available.”

Shoe hurled at Indian premier during speech

New Delhi – A protestor threw a shoe at Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during an election rally on Sunday, but it landed several feet short of where he was speaking. Singh was addressing the gathering in the western Gujarat state’s main Ahmedabad city and was momentarily distracted from his speech as a security personnel ran towards the spot where the shoe was lying.

The guard then kicked and later carried away the white sneaker which had landed about 20 feet away from the podium.

Singh continued his speech as the man, identified as Hitesh Chauhan, a city-based computer engineer in his mid-20s, was whisked away by security personnel.

Local news channels which broadcast images of the incident said Singh had forgiven the youth and asked police not to press charges against the man.

Police officials told the IANS news agency that Chauhan did not belong to any political group but were questioning him to determine the provocation or issue he wanted to protest about.

The NDTV network quoting police sources said Chauhan wanted to grab media publicity by doing so.

Shoe-throwing has become a preferred form of protest in the run-up to the month-long elections in India which began April 16.

This is the fourth occasion when shoes have been hurled at Indian political leaders in the past few weeks.

It all started on April 7, when a journalist lobbed a shoe at India’s Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram during a press briefing in national capital New Delhi.

Days later, a retired school principal threw footwear at Congress party candidate Navin Jindal during an election rally in the northern state of Haryana.

Subsequently, a slipper was thrown at Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani, by a former party worker.

Sunday’s incident was the latest in the series of shoe-attacks on political leaders – shoes have been hurled at former US president George W Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. (dpa)

Kanye West voted ‘Best Dressed Rapper of all Time’

London, May 01 (ANI): Kanye West has been voted the ‘Best Dressed Rapper of all Time’ in a new magazine poll.

The fashionable hip-hop star, who recently launched his own sneaker designs with Nike and Louis Vuitton, won the title with 77 per cent of the votes, reports the Daily Star.

The Stronger hitmaker has beaten his Roc-A-Fella Records boss Jay-Z to land the Complex magazine honour.

West is pleased to receive the title and has complimented a host of his rap peers for making hip-hop more stylish.

In his note of thanks, West says, “Man, I want to thank everybody. this is a real honour! This whole year has been so overwhelmingly positive?

“It means a lot to be able to get respect from my core and peers even though everybody knows I get a little crazy with the clothes sometimes… It’s nice to read something positive for a change! Pharrell pioneered what I do now. He was the original to break down doors between ?real fashion? and hip hop worlds, doing beats for Noreaga and running around with the model chicks.

“(Rick) Ross gets real fresh. T.I. has a great effortless sense of style. Jay(-Z) has set mad trends and is the Sinatra of our era. Nobody is as fresh as Ralph Luaren (sic) himself, only Andre 3000 and (Fonzworth) Bentley get close but there’s still work to do.

“The uphill battle we have as hip hop artist (sic) is hip hop is rooted in trends. True style and trends very seldomely (sic) meet. That’s why we have a tendency to wear stuff that’s laughable 2 years later. When I see crazy stuff I’ve worn and people laugh at me, all I can do is laugh with you and think,I had fun though. Thanks again, Mr. West,” he added. (ANI)

No scientific evidence to support running shoes’ safety

Melbourne, Mar 12 (ANI): Athletes buying pricey sneakers might just be wasting their money, for researchers have found no scientific evidence supporting the safety of these running shoes.

Scientists at the University of Newcastle revealed that they didn’t find any evidence supporting claims that sophisticated cushioning or heel supports prevent injury.

“Since the 1980s, distance running shoes with thick, heavily cushioned heels and features to control how much the heel rolls in, have been consistently recommended to runners who want to avoid injury,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Dr Craig Richards as saying.

“We did not identify a single study that has attempted to measure the effect of this shoe type on either injury rates or performance.

“This means there is no scientific evidence (the) shoes provide any benefit to distance runners,” he added.

Dr Richards said Dutch researchers had previously found between 37 and 56 per cent of recreational runners become injured at least once each year.

While the runners were advised to wear what was called a PCECH shoe – a sneaker with pronation control to prevent the ankle from rolling in and an elevated cushioned heel, they might not be effective enough to protect against injuries.

“Not only can we no longer recommend a PCECH shoe, but the lack of research in this area means that we cannot currently make any evidence-based shoe recommendations to runners,” said Richards

“To resolve this uncertainty, running shoes need to be tested like any other medical treatment, in carefully controlled clinical trials,” he added.

The study appears in British Journal of Sports Medicine. (ANI)
